CONTEST IS NOW LIVE
We've played a lot of Arc Dream games over the years and we want to celebrate them with a contest. Create something to commemorate your favorite AP and you could win a prize!
Rules
1. Create a piece of art in a given category based on an episode of RPPR Actual Play set in an Arc Dream game. The only exception is the PC Death Montage category, which can use any AP episode.
2. Post it to this forum by May 15.
3. Entries will be judged by RPPR by May 31.
4. Winners will receive a random Arc Dream or Slang Design book in the mail, if located in the US or Canada. Overseas winners receive all Base Raider and Zombies of the World PDFs. All winners will be mentioned on a podcast episode as well. We may add additional prizes in the future.
5. A single entry may win in one Arc Dream Game category and in one media category. PC Death submissions can only compete in that category.
6. Rules subject to revision to clarify questions.

1. Wild Talents

3. Monsters and Other Childish Things

I'd want to do a video again and have thought it would be fun to do a movie trailer for one of the campaigns. Not sure what category that would fit into.
-
I think I'll have these categories
Best Fiction
Best Written (other)
Best Art (Character)
Best Art (Action)
Best Video (Reenactment)
Best Video (Other)
And because I'll be giving away Arc Dream books

Is there any updates on this?

Trying to finish a big freelance writing gig before I commit to any other projects. Once I do, then I'll do an episode that explains the rules.
-
so anyone give any thoughts about what they want to do for the contest?
-
I might draw a thing, but I'm not sure what yet. I really need to get a scanner and a wacom pad or something.
-
I'm tempted to make the death montage, but A) I'd use the Gary Jules cover of 'Mad World' instead of Mmm Whatcha say and B) I suck at animation/drawing.
-
If someone who can art could somehow depict our own Ross Payton and his High School Ska Band...

I wonder what kids today will be saying. "That was the name I used when I was an EDM DJ."
-
my EDM DJ name is Tusken Sound Raider
geez

I thought that was the name of your Bright Eyes cover band. I guess I am not as fluent in the many musical personas of Ross as I thought. He has had more phases then the thin white duke.
-
I'm definitely willing to accept the challenge of Character Death Montage, I've got some ideas for it and probably going to use the "Dead Island" trailer music.
I also had a comic idea titled "Albatro!". But not sure if "Lord of the Peaks" would count.
-
Writing's my forte, so I'm thinking of a short story. I'm thinking a Delta Green Epilogue or a MaOCT story. Or both! We got all the time in the world.
BTW, if anyone really, really wants to use MMM Watcha Say, it's name is Hide and Seek, by Imogen Heap, from her album Speak for Yourself.
...it may or may not be on my iPhone.
...I may or may not have liked the Dear Sister meme and the song too much.
-
I'm leaning towards a poorly done lego stop motion "movie trailer" for the No Soul Left Behind campaign. I just need to find a giant badger.
-
The more I think about the Aaron death montage, the more I want to turn it into a big forum collab art project. Like we catalog all his deaths, pick ones we want and tackle them in whatever visual way we want, then put it all together, like the Star Wars made up of different submitted clips or AMV Hell. Obviously this would be separate from the contest, but it might be fun!
-
Well I have a list done up of 16 deaths in call of cthulhu games he's been in, 7 of which I need to relisten to confirm if he did and the cause.

How many of those are, for lack of a better term, "own goal?"

This really feels like it should be a PowerPoint presentation with many many charts.
-
We should probably break it down into at least 3 smaller categories of CoC/ToC, Eclipse Phase, and Other then go from there.
-
Well here's my list,
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZMU-2CL4iCHaXqAtyxe9k0ljb1M9hlPeaTP_7xfxkmY/edit?usp=sharing
(Subject to change or updates)
Also it should be noted that even with the Trail of Cthulhu games, at worst he only dies sort of in most of those?
If anyone can give me a hand (if you feel like it) letting me know about the ??? deaths it might save me some time.

Some corrections:
Shadows of Leuven: Trapped in a hidden room & exsanguinated by a Star Vampire.
The Horrible Lonely House in the Woods: Reanimated as a zombie, then shot in the head.
Well of Sacrifices: Exsanguinated by Giant Vampire Bats, twice!

B-12: I survived but was run out of town by the ghouls.
-
Pretty sure Aaron survived in the KGB Files, but was basically made into a ghoul in the epilogue. Make of that what you will.
And I vaguely remember him being blown up by Ross in Tiamat, but I'm iffy on that.
-
I think that it's also worth noting that in Shadows of Leuven, just before attacking the sorcerer, Aaron uttered the prophetic words: "It's nearly three o'clock in the morning, somebody has to die".

I ended up turning into a proto-Shoggoth at the end of the original Divine Fire, though I can't remember how I went out in KGB. The only thing I recall is driving the truck into the ditch in an attempt to kill the ghoul.

I'm still proud of this one if only that I threw a wrench into the sorcerers plans to extend his life. Granted that wrench was my life, but I think it was well worth it. Plus I didn't want to fall asleep running my game the next day.
-
He died in the game of He Calls Me by the Thunder that I ran at Springfield GAME, but I don't know if that recording will ever be released. As I recall, he was torn to pieces by a puma. He narrowly avoided being shot by Jason in the first five minutes.

So I'm nearly finished the Gug death for Darlington, but I've got a question for people, should I end it with a scene of the Gug in full crushing Darlington? or merely imply it by having him dragged off screen by a Gug's claw? (also I have the latter currently ending in an "old batman series" CRUNCH! sound effect panel)

I lean towards seeing the death - this is cthulhu after all
-
So interesting note, while re-listening to episodes to figure out how Aaron characters died, I have had to remove 2 more from the list, either because the old boy survived or wasn't in a scenario when I thought he was.
Also thanks ross for mentioning the list on Unspeakable Oath. Now I'm more committed to completing this beast. XD

Oh yeah, Aaron's character was killed by his fellow Delta Green agents in the first Unspeakable AP. Tazed, shot, strangled and finally executed with a .22 to the head, then his body was left to burn in a fire, as I recall.
-
And how could I have forgotten Cold Dead Hand? Another case of being killed by his own comrades. After spending the entire session being secretive and insubordinate nearly to the point of mutinous, Aaron snuck off without a word and then seemed surprised when he was summarily executed when they found him planting a backpack nuke. :o

Hey, submitting my entry for the fan creation contest. I don't know that I'm much of an artist, but I wanted to give some love to The Spared and the Spoiled, one of my all time favorite actual plays. After rigging a standardized test and brawling with a trio of grotesquely muscled angels, the Caped Corvid is confronted with the potentially Pyrrhic nature of his struggles.

Hope I'm following the contest rules, please correct me if I'm out of line!
Also, if you're interested, here's the address for a photobucket where I dumped a bunch of sketches for ideas that didn't quite make it off the ground. http://s949.photobucket.com/user/rendez88/library/?sort=3&page=1 (http://s949.photobucket.com/user/rendez88/library/?sort=3&page=1)

Looks good! I dig the other sketches too :D
-
Here's my entry, in the written and A Dirty World categories.
If anyone would be willing to send me some feedback and/or editing suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Apparently my friends no time to read stuff. It's just little things like a small child or graduate school taking up their time ;)
-
Well, I'd best get my entry in. It's a short story for the writing & Monsters and Other Childish Things categories. I bring you:
RPPR and Other Childish Things
As a bonus, here's the character files I used to keep track of everyone (including the notes on how things would eventually play out.)
-
Holy shit, we've had some great entries! Good work everyone :D
-
WAIT! *runs in huffing and puffing, slips filthy, probably typo-laden manuscript under the door*
*Edited to correct a duplicated name. That's what I get for naming minor characters. Stupid. ::)

Damn man, that's really good. I think this might be of interest to you - http://indiemegabooth.com/writing-compelling-game-narrative/ (http://indiemegabooth.com/writing-compelling-game-narrative/) - talks about writing narratives for video games as plays, so maybe they don't suck :)
*Edited to correct a duplicated name. That's what I get for naming minor characters. Stupid. ::)
My alpha reader actually yelled at me 'what is this All you Zombies?? Why does EVERYONE's name start with J???'. Yeaaaaah, that got fixed.
-
All of the entries have been great! I'll contact each of the entrants after I get back from Comicpalooza and get them their prizes.
In hindsight, I should have promoted the contest more. I'll make it up by making a new page on RPPR for fan creations - I'll get the Know Evil stuff in there too.
Very lazy, much horrible monster, wow
-
Thanks very much, Alethea. I did indeed find the link interesting, and I must admit I was a little bit unhappy that we happened to be entering in the same category. But yay for winning by default! ;D
-
Must agree, I love all of these!
-
Yes, Ross, such horribleness, much monstrosity ;)
I was glad to get an opportunity to write again. With my job being such horribleness, much monstrosity I haven't written anything in awhile. The contest was the spark I needed. And everyone elses entries were also awesome! Great job all.
-
Someone must compose and preform a song entitled “I Fly Up” for the death montage background music.
What would the lyrics be?
When there's danger all around, i fly up.
When I hear the gunshot sound, I fly up.
Like a skeet skeet skeet, like a skeet skeet.
Like a skeet skeet skeet, like a skeet skeet.
Only I know why, I fly up.
I soar to heights so high, I fly up.
(Skeet chorus)
I try to dodge in the air, I fly up.
The shots come from God knows where, I fly up.
(Skeet chorus)
-
Where's the thumbs up, +1, or like button when you actually want it?
-
I added a new page to the AP site: http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/fan-creations/ (http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/fan-creations/)
work in progress and all that.
-
Wow that cinematic script to A Very Thorough Murder is extremely well done. Had to read it from start to finish on a single go!
Also, I noticed that the slash fiction piece with the RPPR crewmembers didn't make the cut. :P
-
HA,mouse-Ledbetter made the cut too, excellent! ;D
