It is a pleasant daycycle in Alpha Complex. The reactor core shielding is shining, the various monitors and computer screens are chirping, and all is right with the subterranean world. That is, until you all receive a message from Friend Computer on a nearby communication unit.

Upon opening the message on the screen the following dialogue appears:

Mission Alert

Sector XXY Mission Alpha-Tengo-Bravo-Delta-Niner-A456234567
Mission Code: Longshaft
Briefing Officer: Classified
Briefing Location: Sector XXY Room 89053B

A Message from Friend Computer:

Welcome to the glorious work of troubleshooter, Citizen! As this is your first assignment, Alpha Complex shall assign you a mission that is fairly simple. The mission involves :censored: while requiring the utmost ability in the use of :censored: which will not affect your health in the slightest. I have great confidence in your abilities, this is why I shall monitor your actions and progress on this mission every step of the way. Good luck, Citizen. You are expected to be with your briefing officer within the hourcycle.

OOC: What would your characters be doing around the time they receive this communique? Where would they be?

Winsmith is enjoy a pleasant meal at one of the cafeterias (or equivalent) when he gets the communique. He immediate reports to Room 89053B for briefing.

You are about to leave the cafeteria when a GREEN official from PLC comes over the loudspeaker and grudgingly says, "Fellow Citizen, today is a... joyous... day. Due in part to the workings of the Computer and PLC mission goal "4567AU: Enhanced FunFoods for the loyal citizens of Alpha Complex" for a limited time only a Kumquat is available for purchase to all citizens."

And there it is, placed within its own special INFRARED vending machine. You have never seen a real Kumquat before. Obviously the mold and spores growing upon the half decayed fruit adds to the taste. It looks... delicious.

Unfortunately, a mob of INFRARED citizens behind you have become a stampeding horde, trampling all those in their way in order to taste the real fruit. You, are in their way.

Winsmith looks at the stampeding hoard approach, but holds his ground. While they are still several feet away, he begins to speak in a nice deep baritone, "Fellow citizens, let's not fight over this real fruit, which is obviously a special gift from Friend Computer. Instead, if we all form a queue, everyone should be able to at least get a taste of it."

I'm going to use a combination of Moxie and Oratory to try to pull this off.

Through your streetwise smarts, you determine that a quote from CPU's service document: "Lines of our Lives" would be most appropriate to stem the flood of famished INFRAREDs. You recite the quote perfectly. Unfortunately, seeing as how most CPU documents are composed entirely in Binary, nobody understands what you are saying. You are crushed to the ground by the masses. Your left leg is broken and you lose an eye.

However, once the crowd reaches the vending machine they all realize that, being INFRAREDs, nobody has enough money to buy the delicious fruit. You can easily drag yourself over and buy it, by spending a year's pay.

Classy-R-DF7-1

Classy-R-DF7-1 would have overslept from last nights tinkering with various gadgets the communique would wake him, he quickly reads it Grabs some tech to mess with and rushes off too the briefing.

After racing down the RED clearance halls to catch a ride at a transbot platform, you realize there is some sort of commotion happening in the cafeteria behind you. Turning around you see a fellow citizen lying on the ground with a broken leg. A crowd of citizen is clustered around a vending machine nearby. Suddenly the transbot arrives on station. The next transbot is due to arrive within 24 to 48 hours, if you don't catch this one you will be late for the briefing.

Obviously, it is a training exercise mandated by the computer. That is why the light fixture you have to fix is suspended 10 stories over a transbot railway. The thin service walkway you are standing on has seen better days. It sways with each passing transbot and flybot. After a mighty effort to install the new lights, you finally succeed!

You are about to make your way down to safe and firm ground when you start to here a buzzing noise. Looking around you suddenly realize that you are caught in the midst of one of Alpha Complex's famous power surges. The lighting fixture you just spent 30 minutes replacing suddenly explodes and you are thrown off the side of the walkway.

As you fall your eyes dart to a large ceiling monitor that usually serves as a message board. Currently it is displaying the following text:

WARNING CITIZENS
HACKING ATTEMPT BY TRAITOR Harold-R-AJC-1 CAUSING DANGEROUS POWER SURGE
PLEASE MAINTAIN AT LEAST A 100 FOOT DISTANCE FROM ALL LIGHTING FIXTURES
HAVE A NICE DAY!

You hit a passing transbot at terminal velocity, shattering your spine, skull, ribs, legs, arms, and putting quite a large dent in the ceiling of the vehicle. You are later fined for the damages. Your clone backup is delivered directly to the briefing room.

As you exit the transbot you feel something drip on the back of your neck. Looking up, the charred broken body of Phillip-R-JE7-1 rolls off the top of the transport vehicle and smashes into you. This is the second time today that you have been crushed to the ground.

Suddenly, you hear the roar of jet engines as a flybot flashes overhead. A medium sized box floats to the ground connected to a parachute. The box hits the ground with a light *thump* and opens up automatically. Phillip-R-JE7-2 falls out of the delivery box, soundly asleep, cloning vat ooze still dripping off him.

Realizing that trying to convince the Computer of anything is a lost cause, you try and sneak out of your living complex.

You see Winsmith hit the ground as a corpse smashes into him after exiting the transbot. You see that maybe you didn't do so well on replacing that eye and fixing up that leg. In that poorly lit transbot you grabbed for whatever looked spherical to replace the eye. Apparently, it was a grenade that you grabbed for, not an artificial targeting eyeball.

Looking down at Winsmith's legs you realize that you really weren't thinking straight in that transbot. What you thought was a form fitting bio-cast was actually a hollowed out, but still functioning, tacnuke.

You and Classy are hit by millions of pieces of Official Computer sanctioned Shrap-O-Nell! Both of you leave bloody smears on the ground as you two are completely disintegrated in the blast. The Tacnuke flies up into the air and keeps going up, it quickly becomes a dot against the gray backdrop of Alpha Complex's 5 mile high ceiling.

Phillip-R-JE7-2's sleeping body is is propelled back into his padded crate which flies through a window in the building nearby, which coincidentally houses the briefing room. He is the only one of you to make it on time to the briefing, albeit unconscious and with a horrible headache when he wakes up.

VERY WELL! REMOVE THE VALUABLE ALPHA COMPLEX HARDWARE FROM THE SKULL OF YOUR FELLOW CITIZEN!

You aren't a Docbot or anything, but human anatomy isn't that different from computer anatomy, right? And if you know anything about dangerous electrical equipment, it's that brute force is always the best solution!

With a mighty effort you grab Briefbot by its handle and tear it out of Winsmith's head, not exactly in a gentle way.

The massive electrical backlash causes Winsmith's hair to catch on fire, also the left side of his skull is missing, exposing his brain to open air. But hey, Briefbot, looks okay.

Winsmith-R-XXY-2

Because of the damage to the cerebellum Winsmith is starting to lose fine motor control. He blasts randomly at the others in the room with his laser while mumbling, "Di......e... Com...un...ists."

"Friend Computer, this commie traitor is trying to read highly classified documents beyond his clearance level!  I will terminate him immediately before he can leak this information to his communist, mutant friends!  I will also deal with Harold because I know he is thinking about it too.  Better safe than sorry."

Gary pulls his laser and tries to end Winsmith.  He also tries to kill Harold in the process.

Gary is spouting off some rather poetic and extremely convincing rhetoric. Everybody, including the COMPUTER, is calmed by his simple reasoning and devotion to helping rid Alpha Complex of all traitors. Raising his weapon, Gary promises to everybody present that he will make Alpha Complex a great place for the glory of the people! Everything seems awesome and all is right with the world.

That is until Winsmith shoots a laser sized hole through Gary's chest. Bloods sprays the wall as Gary's weapon simultaneously malfunctions and explodes, blowing Gary in half.

Gary's legs are blasted away from his body and hit Harold, knocking the tardy troubleshooter off his feet.

After a brief moment of silence, the Briefbot says, "I am your briefing officer! Everybody present please take these mission forms. Failing to due so is treason!" The briefcase twitches open and close.

Everybody notices that the mission forms are green in color.

OOC: Remember if there is something that you want to be kept private or secret from the other players, PM me. I'll be PMing all of you soon for your secret society missions and whatnot.

Classy casually walks over to the briefing bot dropping a small explosive in Winsmiths volcano hat and diving for cover.

Winsmith continues to blast away with his laser. His speech is no longer recognizably human.

Classy walks up to Winsmith nonchalantly and attempts to detonate a small incendiary device he found in the transbot. Classy lights the fuse on the stick of explosives and throws it into the volcano hat. Unfortunately, or fortunately, that's when Automatic Fire-Away! Foam begins to the fill the room, putting out all fires and the explosive.

Winsmith misfires his laser but almost hits Gary-R-NBP-2 as he enters the room, looking confused and carrying a box label R&D.

Briefbot grumbles, "Now all the mission papers are covered in foam!"

The COMPUTER finally speaks again:

REFUSING TO LISTEN TO YOUR BRIEFING OFFICER IS TREASON! YOUR OFFICER IS ALWAYS CORRECT. SUBJECTING MISSION PAPERS TO A BUBBLE BATH IS TREASON AS WELL. ALL CITIZEN, EXPLAIN YOURSELVES!

Winsmith-R-XXY-2, YOU ARE A TRAITOR. PLEASE TERMINATE YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY!

OOC: Classy I think you are now on your second clone right? So you should be Classy-R-DF7-2.

Winsmith-R-XXY-2

Winsmith attempts to make a brilliant oration about how all the other members in the room are commie traitors, but has, for some reason, lost the ability to speak. He makes a number of garbled, spitting noises.

Gary walks to the Briefingbot and takes his papers to read.

"Hey guys, let's all read the brilliant and perfect instructions given to us by Friend Computer."

He reads the papers and tries to duck the stray laser shots and spit form Winsmith.

It's a good thing that the normally GREEN papers are dyed RED with blood or else you could have been so many body parts on the floor when Internal Security finally arrives at the briefing room. One of the IntSec goons fires a stun gun at Winsmith and the gibbering insane man is dragged out of the room.

The Instructions
Mission: Longshaft

Orders: Escort tech services technician Bob-Y-AAC-1 to Central Elevator Shaft.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: (a particularly gory body part has landed here and has obscured the text)

An extremely grumpy heavyset man suddenly arrives and the door and says, "Where are my damn troubleshooters!? You all were supposed to be here TWO DAYCYCLES AGO!"

Phillip-R-JE7-2

Phillip smiles at the new arrival. "Hello, Citizen! Our mission, given to us by Friend Computer, was to arrive here at this time to escort a technician. If you are him, I believe you may in fact have arrived two daycycles early by mistake, unless you are suggesting that Friend Computer has made so grievous an error...   Of course you aren't. May I see your identicard so I can confirm you are in fact the technician we have been assigned to escort, and not a commie spy?"

EDIT: I'm Phillip-2 now. :(

The man belches and angrily says, "I ain't gonna show you anything. Now follow me, we're going to have to take a flybot to get to the elevator in any reasonable amount of time. Fucking troubleshooters, all you have to do is die, and you always fail at it."

Bob turns around and stomps out the room.

You've been dragged away by IntSec. I'll deal with you in PMs. You're still on your 2nd clone, and alive, for now.

Gary shrugs and follows the man out of the room. "don't worry sir, we'll take good care of you."

Assuming you are all sane enough to follow the technician, he leads you throughout the entire sector on some sort of wild goose chase looking for a Flybot Depot. Eventually he accidentally stumbles into one and begins haggling with the ORANGE attendant.

Finally, he succeeds and manages to procure the most damaged and misused flybot you have ever seen. The machine drags sparking wires on the ground as the attendant and several jackbots wheel it towards you.

Bob says, "Well get in. We're late."

Seeing that you intend to fly the meal deathtrap, the attendant dives for cover.

Phillip-R-JE7-2

Seeing the horrific state of the flybot (and having been recently reminded of the kind of pain they can cause) Phillip will attempt to fix the most grievous of the security violations.

"You get yourself buckled in sir, I just need to do a quick pre-flight on this Flybot. There seem to be a few horrifically dangerous maintenance issues that will slow down our flight and likely kill us all. I promise that we'll more than make up the time it takes to get them in working order.

"Besides, No use getting there if we arrive dead! We'd just have to get another flybot and do it again." This is said with a genuine smile.

Some sort of social skill to convince him to wait calmly. Perhaps Chutzpah at 6?

Regardless whether he plans to wait calmly, Bob have to wait. Phillip will begin fixing the flybot. He will of course follow proper maintenance protocols which dictate deactivating the engines before attempting any internal repairs. He'll stick to only the most dangerous problems and do whatever he can in 15 minutes.

If not, sorry for the firey explosion!
