General Chaos / Dresden Files... A Testimonial!
« on: May 20, 2012, 02:57:18 AM »
I am not normally a shill for any particular product or service. Okay, scratch that and let me start over again...

I am not normally a shill for any particular product or service except for Roleplaying Public Radio and Ross "Buy-My-Book" Payton, but after playing a short Dresden Files scenario last night, I must admit that I really, REALLY like the system.

Once you get past the conceptual difficulties, namely; a game that asks, nay, demands that you be creative and build a character, the game mechanics themselves are pretty fun. Our session effectively ended with a botched kidnapping attempt, an invisible van, a vampire coed, cheerleader loudly demanding to know where her boyfriend went and one Call Of Cthulhu inspired Sherlock Holmes wannabe fleeing the scene of the crime screaming "Vampire! Vampire!"

All in all, it was a pretty fun night.

Any of you guys tried this particular system yet and if so, do you have any thoughts or anecdotes you would care to share?

PS: I've attached the character sheet for the character I played last night, just in case anybody is interested

If you could pick any two historical or fictional persons to fight, who would they be?

Why do you think your guy would win?

Tommy "Johnny-Don't-Touch-Me-Mudderfucker-From-The-Room" Wiseau vs. Austin Powers

I think Johnny would win this fight hands down! Did you see him man-handle Chris R. on the roof? What about his freakish strength when he sent Mark flying across his living room?

Oh yeah, my money is a Johnny...

Who rule Bordertown bitch?!

General Chaos / The Dead Set.
« on: October 27, 2010, 12:18:25 PM »
Just watched the first episode of "The Dead Set" on IFC last night...

It's an English mini-series (by "mini" I mean five episodes) airing at midnight from 25 Oct. to 29 Oct.

The first episode was brilliant! A very interesting premise blended with great special effects, lots of gore and top-notch acting...

If you haven't seen it or heard about it, I'd check it out. If you're a zombie fan (yes Ross, I'm talking to you!) this program is a must see!!

Just thought I'd give you guys a heads-up...

General Chaos / Civilization V Sucks Ass!
« on: September 28, 2010, 10:50:32 PM »
Wow, I thought Civ IV was bad...

Civ IV is nothing compared to the epic fail that Civ V is.

The graphics are gorgeous. The game play is all right. The basic mechanics of the game remain unchanged from Civ IV (which frankly dumbed down the mechanics to the level of your average chimpanzee), but man oh man is the combat awful.

I mean how could you Munson something as simple as combat!? Sitting down and playing Civ V for about an hour was like shitting your pants out in the desert: nobody is gonna bail you out of that situation.

Well, theres goes 40+ dollars down the toilet. I knew I should have bought Left 4 Dead II!!!

General Chaos / Great Expectations: Keeper vs. Player
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:39:23 PM »
I wanted to pose this question after thinking about on ongoing conversation with Jason regarding Aaron’s first foray into the running a game at a major convention.

I completely respect the kind of guts it takes to say “Yes, I will attempt to entertain 4 or 5 strangers for several hours in a less-than optimal environment!”

That being said, Jason got me thinking about the nature of an informal game versus the expectation that goes along with the same game, but in a convention type atmosphere.

Personally, I feel that the players have high expectations going into a convention. Much higher than, say, those same players walking through a buddy’s front door for a night of informal gaming. Conversely, I feel that a Keeper ought to have pretty high standards set for himself and his game. I think both Player and Keeper have a responsibility to make the whole experience as immersive and enjoyable as possible.

I’ve never been to a gaming con, so I can’t really speak from experience. However, I’m curious about the whole dynamic of Player expectations vs. Keeper expectations  going into an event like GenCon. I know we all remember that infamous CoC scenario that Ross ran a year ago (I think it was a year ago). One of the players got pissed because he couldn’t railroad another player’s character into doing something he wanted that player to do and thusly felt railroaded himself.

Anyway, everyone’s thoughts on the subject may prove enlightening and instructive for all.

(P.S. I am, in no way, trying to criticize or castigate Aaron or his performance at GenCon. I am simply and respectfully posing a question in order to spark some debate.)

If I were at GenCon I would ask for Ross's autograph, a vial of his blood and lock of his hair...

It's not for me, Cthulhu said he needs it...

;D
