General Chaos / Tell me, have you seen this Yellow Sign?
« on: May 08, 2016, 04:30:41 PM »
Recently I've been receiving strange packages from someone in Buffalo, New York. Inside have been various King in Yellow-related objects (more information on this to follow).

In the latest package, I received this curious pendant. It appears to be an artistic rendition of the Yellow Sign, or at least I assume that's what it is. But it's not a version of the Sign that I've ever encountered before. I was curious if anyone in this august and well-informed community might be able to help me track down the origin of this particular version?

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Scary Parrots Panel Notes
« on: April 16, 2016, 10:49:48 AM »
Someone let me know that the old Dropbox link I had for my notes on the Scary Parrots panel had broken. So I'm putting my file in the forums to hopefully make a more permanent home for it. So here it is, attached!

No guarantees that all of the included links still work. I found 'em all through Google myself, so you could always update it yourself if you'd like.

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / "Creepy Parrots" shout-out links
« on: October 23, 2015, 05:22:03 PM »
I've typed up a complete list of links for all the MANY things that got mentioned during the "Creepy Parrots" panel recording. Here's the list as a .docx file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7n30v1humgcprfl/Scary%20Parrots%20Links.docx?dl=0

So much goodness.

EDIT: If anyone can find the creepypasta story that Ross mentions about going camping with a weird stranger, let me know. That's the only thing I couldn't find.

RPGs / Any tips on running Dread?
« on: September 03, 2015, 02:53:05 PM »
Does anybody have some good tips and experience for running a good game of Dread? I'm putting a game together for a party a couple weeks from now, and I'll be running it for the first time.

My initial thoughts:

1. I'm thinking of a survival horror game set on a fairly near-future moon base, with some AI/robotic horror and corporate intrigue. I'm thinking the PCs are going to be space tourists.

2. It looks like I may have as many as 7 or 8 players. Which normally would be too many, but...I think Dread might be able to handle it.

3. I'm thinking Survival Horror, rather than much investigation or psychological weirdness, because the single-mechanic nature of Dread lends itself to survival better.

RPGs / Red Markets Inspiration
« on: August 03, 2015, 06:16:54 PM »
I think it's time for a centralized thread for cool stuff to inspire Red Markets games. I'll start:

I could see an airport terminal as a potential enclave location. Most of the main levels are elevated, so easy to fortify. Lots of open interior space for farming, and salveagable high tech communication equipment that could be barterable. It would probably take quite a lot of work to clear out all the casualties at first, though. It would most likely have to be an enclave founded a year or two after the Crash, rather than one existing from the beginning.

General Chaos / Tabletop gaming cocktails
« on: April 25, 2015, 02:40:43 PM »
Now that gamer-themed bars are becoming a real thing, the world needs more tabletop gaming-inspired cocktails. I've seen some good video game and geek-culture tv/movie ones, but not a lot of RPG or tabletop ones. So here are a few suggestions:

"The Nine Lives Stealer" - inspired by the classic D&D magic sword. 9 kinds of booze mixed together. Alternatively known as a "Power 9", from the famous set of the most powerful cards in Magic: the Gathering.

"The Critical Hit" - a standard gin and tonic, but made with 114-proof Navy-strength gin. Also available as the "Vorpal Critical Hit", with Everclear instead of gin.

"SAN Check" - A simple whiskey and Coke, but roll a percentile die when ordering. On a roll of 40 or above, add an extra shot of whiskey.

Anybody wanna suggest some others?

RPGs / Good RPG ideas for a long car trip?
« on: January 22, 2015, 10:35:25 AM »
I'm expecting to soon be taking a long, 16-ish hour car ride with my family out to Albuquerque for my grandpa's 80th birthday party. And I've been thinking, what better way to kill time driving across Oklahoma than to run an RPG?

So what ideas to people have for something to play during a car trip? I'm thinking that we need something that doesn't have much dice-rolling; maybe card drawing would be better. And not much looking at complicated character sheets, either.

Maybe Fate Accelerated?

RPGs / Best Trail of Cthulhu scenarios for the aspiring writer?
« on: November 17, 2014, 01:15:30 PM »
Let's say I'm planning to write some Trail of Cthulhu adventures, hopefully good enough for publication, either by Pelgrane or by somebody else. What would be the best ToC adventures for me to read, to learn the proper style, format, and organization for them?

RPGs / Freaky Architectural Stuff for Ruin
« on: October 16, 2014, 03:03:07 PM »
So instead of putting this into the General Chaos HAY GUYS thread, I figured I'd start a new one here, since it directly pertains to Ross's upcoming game. I figure it'll be more convenient to collect any weird architectural horror-type things we find in one spot.

Things like The Imaginary Prisons of Giovanni Piranesi: http://www.futilitycloset.com/2014/10/11/the-imaginary-prisons/

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / The Mitchum Cleary Time Loop?
« on: October 04, 2014, 01:50:48 PM »
So in the last episode of Sense of the Sleight of Hand Man, David discussed how apparently Mitchum Cleary had traveled back in time through the Dreamlands, and was apparently stuck in a time loop. Now, I know of his adventures in SotSoHM, and in Bryson Springs later on in the 1930's, but I got the impression from the discussion that there is at least one other adventure during Mr. Cleary's looping career. Could somebody help me out?

General Chaos / Springfield G.A.M.E. Con?
« on: August 29, 2014, 11:40:34 PM »
Any of y'all heard of/have ever attended the Springfield G.A.M.E. Con? http://springfieldgame.com/ It's not exclusively tabletop gaming like Fear the Con is, but it looks like it could be pretty fun.

Apparently they're in Year 6 this year, and I was thinking of coming down for it, October 10-12.

My brother and his wife will be there too, selling knitted...things. I'm hoping to have my Civil War Call of Cthulhu scenario complete enough to run at the con for strangers.

RPGs / APs, Spoilers, and Con Game Etiquette - Bryson Springs
« on: April 15, 2014, 10:35:22 PM »
A conundrum: I've listened to an Actual Play recording of a scenario, but now the opportunity presents itself to actually *play* the scenario at a convention. Is it bad etiquette to do so? I don't want to deprive some other person of their chance to enjoy the scenario, and I don't want to inadvertently risk "spoilers" for my fellow players...but I also really wanna play. And I don't remember the details of the scenario all that well...

To put all my cards on the table, I'm trying to decide whether to sign up for Caleb's "Bryson Springs" game at Fear the Con. Just about the only thing I remember from the AP is that it's a bad idea to set the orchard on fire. What do you guys think? Especially, I guess, what do you think, Caleb?

General Chaos / Other RPPR Con Plans This Year?
« on: February 21, 2014, 04:24:25 PM »
Is anybody from the podcast (or the community) planning to go to any cons besides Gen Con this year? I  might be heading to Fear the Con in St. Louis in mid-June. I'd love to go to Gen Con some year, but the university I work at tends to start their fall semester that week.
