Character Profiles / Re: Character Pitch: Thomas Hatch
« on: April 23, 2011, 11:16:17 AM »
Took a look over the stats and everything looks great. You definitely have a feel for the game with your character; I like that all of his skills are those he would plausibly have. Oftentimes people will give every character they create a couple levels of firearms, which typically doesn't make sense for their character concept.

But the skills Thomas does have will come in very useful, I'm certain. Dark Conspiracy is much more investigative than combative in nature (though there is sure to be plenty of both!)

Great! When you've come up with a character concept, pitch your idea on the Character Profiles board: http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?board=37.0

Fantastic! I love this character! I definitely chuckled over the Bob Woodward line. :D This is exactly what I'm looking for: a character who you wouldn't be surprised to run into at a bar, but also has potential to become wrapped up in strange and supernatural happenings.

Go ahead and fill out the character generation worksheet and your final character sheet whenever you get the opportunity. Any additional stuff you want to add to the character bio would be fine too.

Just out of curiosity, I noticed a mention of Orrin, as in Orrin Hatch? Just wondered if that was a typo or if Thomas is secretly related to the senator. ;)

The setting is 1991, so keep that in mind. Characters should live in Bourne during the Incident. They are the Survivors.

To play, read up on Character Creation in the Character Profiles section. http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?board=37.0
Then post a character idea in a separate thread or message me privately. I will work with you on character design.

For gameplay, it will be pretty simple, as Ross said, the emphasis will be on storytelling. Check out the posts on How to Play and How to Roll Dice. http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?board=38.0

Once we get a critical mass of 3-4 players, we can get started! I think it will be a lot of fun.  :)

Out of Character / How to play - Gameplay
« on: April 16, 2011, 06:19:09 PM »
Gameplay is pretty simple for our purposes.

For any task, roll one 10-sided die (1d10). To succeed, you must roll equal to or lower than your combined Attribute + Skill, though there are modifiers depending on how simple the task is.

For an Easy task it is 2x skill level: Ex. Your Strength is 2 and your Mechanic skill is 2. Your total is 4. As long as your roll an 8 or below to succeed.

Average task is straight skill level: Ex. Your Strength is 2 and your Mechanic skill is 2. Your total is 4. You must roll a 4 or under to succeed.

Difficult is half your skill level: Ex. Your Strength is 2 and your Mechanic skill is 2. Your total is 4. You must roll a 2 or 1 to succeed.

Any greater difficulty is up to GM discretion.

For damage we will use the Dark Conspiracy rulebook, unless GM can't find the stats, in which case it is up to GM discretion. GM will tell you how much damage you roll based on the rulebook.

Attributes:

Attributes in Dark Conspiracy are pretty simple. You are given 36 points to spend in the following:

Strength
Constitution
Agility
Intelligence
Education
Charisma
Empathy

No attribute can have a numerical value of less than 1, except Empathy, which players can have 0 points in, i.e. they are not psychic. No attribute can be more than 10. Each level of Empathy costs 2 points per level.

Skills:

The skill system is based around your charcter's age, and their occupational background. In our simplified version of the game, it goes like this: 1) Pick how old you are. Each 4 years after the age of 17 counts as a "term". Each term grants you 5 skill points, to be spent however you think would make sense for your character (subject to GM approval). So for instance a character aged 30 would have 3 terms to have been a truck driver, mechanic and gambler (or 3 terms as truck driver), and would have 15 points to spend on skills. See the Character Generation sheet for more information.

After age 33, your attributes have the chance of decreasing (talk to GM about this, but see Character Generation sheet to see what rolls you'll have to make).

You also gain 1 contact per term -- so for example our trucker might have met another mechanic, a smuggler and a bookie over the 12 years of his career. GM will work with players to flesh out contacts.

Starting equipment and resources for characters are nonexistent at this point (you will see why once play has begun).

Character sheets uploaded below.

Out of Character / How to roll dice
« on: April 14, 2011, 07:52:53 PM »
Here's how the dice roller works: The command is : dice xdz : without the spaces between the colons.

The command : dice 2d6 : (without the colons) would roll two 6-sided die. Like so:

Rolling 2d6:
(1+5): Total = 6

Sometimes you may need to add or subtract to the dice roll, for instance you may need to roll two six-sided die minus one. To do this, use the command : dice 2d6-1 : (again, without the colons). To wit:

Rolling 2d6-1:
(2+3)-1: Total = 4

If for some reason you want to hide your roll, for instance, you want to pickpocket a fellow player (what a jerk!), just add "spoiler" tags from the above commands -- it's the button with the hazard symbol. This would work like so:
I stealthily pickpocket Cynthia. Rolling 1d10:
(6): Total = 6
Player characters may be of any age, background, etc. The characters live in or are staying in Bourne, Oregon at the time of The Incident (1991). Characters are expected to be ordinary Americans; no CIA agents or werewolf pirate ninjas raised by psychics. That said, characters in this game should be survivors, and they should possess the moral fortitude, interest and resilience required to lead them into a life of investigation as they begin to untangle the web of mystery surrounding the Dark Conspiracy. If you are interested in playing an Empathic character, let me know so I can discuss specifics with you.

The world of Dark Conspiracy is a grim one. No one is safe, and players should expect a game in which death is ever-present; torture and violence are everyday occurrences. Characters will have to rely on each other to survive, but betrayal is all-too-common, and many of their comrades are likely to die (as may some of the characters themselves).

Dark Conspiracy is an old 1991 role-playing game from GDW, discontinued for many years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Conspiracy The system uses only D10 and D6. I'll be running a very rules-lite version, so keep that in mind if you decide you'd like to play.

When pitching your character, please start a new topic so I can keep the characters separate from each other more easily.

Take Me Through The Darkness: A Tale of Dark Conspiracy

Bourne, Oregon was a sleepy little town tucked away in Cracker Canyon along the Idaho border. The only civilization for miles around, Bourne functioned as a supply post of sorts, serving the needs of the remaining timber operations throughout the majestic Blue Mountains.

Baker County was once a hub at the center of a number of highly-profitable logging sites, but the due to increased competition from abroad, many of the companies went bankrupt or moved operations overseas. Several small towns in the area were gradually abandoned, leaving behind emptied buildings and a shattered economy, until only Bourne remained.

But much like other small towns all over America, life in Bourne went on. The town was home to the 1987-1988 women's hockey state champions the Lady Falcons, and every October residents celebrated the annual Redwood Festival.

Then on the night of September 11th, 1991, a bright light appeared over the skies above Bourne. Residents filed out of their houses with an eerie sense of calm, observing the play of lights above with muted awe.

The next day, Bourne became a ghost town. Over two hundred people disappeared without a trace.

Today, twenty years later, the first survivors have come forward.

This is their story. It is the story of what transpired on that fateful night. It is the story of those who survived the Bourne Incident. But it is also a story of Our Dark America, and the continuing drama of those who would bring light to a land engulfed in shadow.

Take Me Through The Darkness [Dark Conspiracy: 3+ Players]

Game Title: Take Me Through The Darkness
System: Dark Conspiracy
Players Wanted: 3 or so. I already have 2-3 confirmed players and I don't think it would be fun to have more than 6 total.
Posting Rate: I'm going to see how regularly I can post, but currently I'm expecting a couple of times per week.
Special Rules: Right now I'm going very rules-lite, mainly because the Dark Conspiracy rules are pretty complicated and I really don't want to read the book again. We'll be focusing on character development and role-playing over "roll-playing". I'll probably use some simple dice rules as a randomizer.
Advancement Rules: I'm in favor of character advancement so I'll probably modify (homebrew) the advancement rules from the original Dark Conspiracy.

Here's the pitch:

Take Me Through The Darkness: A Tale of Dark Conspiracy

Lately though folks around Bourne have started noticed something amiss.... a nagging uneasiness and foreboding.

The night of September 12, 1991, a bright light appears over the skies above Bourne. Residents file out of their houses with an eerie sense of calm, observing the play of lights above with muted awe.

The next day, Bourne became a ghost town. Over two hundred people disappeared without a trace.

Characters

The mood and setting is reminiscent of gritty 80s and 90s scifi and horror films such as Scanners, eXistenz, Alien Nation, Twin Peaks and the X-Files (TV series).
