RPGs / 4th Edition Encounter Levels

I am toying with the idea of trying out a 4th Ed. game and I wanted to know from people who have experiance with the system, how accurate are the Encounter Levels.

Like for instance, is a Level 8 Solo monster, really a challenge for an average level 8 party? Min-Maxing aside.

Also if so, how much does Min-Maxing skew this?

RPGs / New campaign I am starting up need some advice(Very Lengthy)

This is pretty lengthy so I will understand if no one decides to read it >_<.

This is the set up we are thinking of doing for a Mutants and Masterminds game we have coming up. The reason I am posting the characters is that I want to run it in an "Issue" format where every session is like an issue of a comic. I have some issue ideas but I want to see if anyone wants to throw in some ideas.

Heroes:

Akkar (PC)- Child of a leader in the field of advanced power armor, his father was contracted by the "corporation" to construct a cutting edge combat suit. When the men came for the final testing of the suit, they betrayed and killed his father. William Pierce jumped into the armor and fled. He then spent many nights hunting down everyone connected to his fathers death and killing them. After his tirade of vengence was over, he was invited to work on a Power Armor project by James Porter. A position which he accepted.

Vyse Rogue (PC) - At one time he was an Archaeologist who was on the wrong side of the law, he  would mount illegal expeditions and sell the loot off to the highest bidder, his spelunking team consisted of his wife and his best friend. During an expedition where he found a rare and powerful magical artifact his friend betrayed him and shot and killed his wife, then turned the gun on Vyse. After dispatching of Vyse and taking as many of the Artifacts as he could carry he left Vyse to bleed to death. With his dying breaths the dark God of the now ancient and ruined temple gave Vyse the chance to live again, along with powers to help him enact justice in the world, without telling him the horrible price he would someday pay.

Silent Death (NPC) - Former member of the Powers Division of the military she has the ability to mend wounds at  a spectacular rate. After leaving the military she trained in the use of a bow and nonlethal arrows and became a "Super".

Omega Sunfire (PC )- Alexandria Croteu is the head scientist on James Porters team to craft the perfect Android. She was injured on a mission in space, after her craft was struck by odd gravitational fields. She came away from the ordeal with the ability to manipulate gravity in a small area around herself, However she also lost use of her legs. When she started work on the Omega Project she tenetivly adapted the Android Tech into a suit that would replace the destroyed nerves that cotrolled her legs,.

James Porter(NPC) - James Porter is the CEO of Porter Industries. He was born a mutant,  less than 5% of the population in the world are mutants so it is pretty rare(Some say the number is higher in Africa). He was born with some unique abilities. He however chose to ignore those abilities and pursue a business agenda instead. He has his  Masters degree in Physics and Electrical Engineering, a masters degree in Psycology, and is currently working on his Law degree. He is fluent in English, Russian, Spanish, and Japanese. He is also very adept with a computer.

Lieutenant Liberty(NPC) - His father was a swat officer who was killed during a riot, he donned his fathers armor(and then later some power armor provided by Porter Industires) and decided to take his fight to the streets as a protector of the common man. When everyone else is worrying about the big picture he is worring about his town.

Atomic Sally (PC) - 18-19 year old that has powers due to being near radiation her whole life. (Nothing is fleshed out yet.)  

Issue Ideas:

Man in an armored suit identical to an ally robs the bank, powers division come and arrest the hero holding him with no bail while they investigate.

New Virtual Reality technology is shown to be dangerously addictive, when it is investigated the program turns deadly.

Cult of the Dark God that gave Vyse his powers. Vyse is stalked by it's members until finally the Head Mage abducts Vyse in an attempt to sacrifice him to bring the deity to this realm in a physical form.

Swarm of poorly build robots are attacking several location across town.

- Banks

- Parks

- Shopping Malls

This is an attempt to spread the team thin to carry out an attack on Porter Industries.

New portal technology opens a gate to an alternate world.

- Land where carniverous plants have hunted humanity to near extinction

- Inverted Alignment World

-Nazi world domination

Two notoriously under the rader villains go on a seemingly senseless ramapage.

- Who is behind their actions?

A Woman gains super human abilities from a divine spirit and attempts to clense the demonic energies from Vyse, causing Vyse to be split into an evil savage version of himself with more demonic traits and a good aligned version of himself has a mirrored version of his powers from a holy source. The demonic energies no longer being kept in line by his good self have increased his powers greatly.

I don't know how many of you can make up random character names off the top of your head but I am terrible at it. I used to sit in front of whatever game I was playing FOREVER trying to think of suitable names for my characters, hell I have a character I've been playing on and off for a year and he still doesn't have an offcial name(Currently he is called Dagon). That is until one day I picked a few names that would be my go-to names.

City of Heroes
My first ever DnD Character
Baludrs Gate
Mutants and Masterminds (based after my CoH character)

Markus Battlin is another name I am fond of for Rogue type characters.

Rebecca Porter
Diablo II (Sorc named Becky)

Am I the only one who reuses old names?

Also, post some character names here so we can shamelessly steal them for NPC names.

Collective Nouns are an interesting thing, not really all that well established in RPG source books, but fun none the less.

So let's come up with some good one's for use in games, whether they are funny or not.

I have been listening the NWG(New World Gaiden) and it led me think of
A Steampot of Chuul

Anyone have any good collective nouns they'd like to share?

General Chaos / Worthwile Rifftrax

I am in the middle of watching the Twilight Rifftrax and it has rekindled my love of MST3K.

I am currently downloading The Room rifftrax but I haven't seen The Room on it's own yet, should I watch it alone first?

So any Rifftrax that you guys around these parts find particulary good?

Bonus Question: What was your favorite MST3K episode? Mine was "Warrior of the Lost World"

My friend has been looking for a Stargate themed RPG. I did some research and came upon one made in 1998 and one in 2003.

The 2003 game is based off of the Spycraft system, so my question is: Is Spycraft a good system, or would the series benefit more from something like GURPS?

RPGs / Using the Oriental Adventures game setting

The first campaign I ever played of DnD was in the OA setting, I didn't really like the classes I was faced with picking between so I asked for special permission to make a Paladin and after hearing my idea for intergration the DM allowed it.

It was my first go so he is not terribly fleshed out, but I do have some basics.

Human Paladin turned Gray Guard after seeing a Samurai clan leader turn corrupt and violent over a love affair.

I have a running in character debate going with my friend who plays a samurai about loyalty to a church vs. loyalty to a clan

my point being clan leadership changes but my deity is a constant source of leadership to me.

Anyway, I want some other peoples input on how to play this character that would be fun for me as well as a good way to play off the fact that his perception of the world is vastly  different than most of those around him dealing with a European attitude in a Japanese inspired land.

Oh and yes I have been in many arguments/honorable duels because of my ignorance to japanese culture.

I am getting married on monday, and the bachelor party is on saturday.

I told my friends that I want to drink and play RPG's but I need ideas for fun scenarios to play while drinking or while drunk.

Also any ideas on rules for drinking.

The systems I have available to me are
Call of Cthulu
Mutants and Masterminds
3.5 Dnd or Pathfinder
Dark Heresy
and Dnd 4.0

Friday night I want to run an Age of Masks themed M&M game but that is unrelated to the drinking.

I planned to start this account to be able to participate in all the discussions and post some anecdotes but I slowly realized that I am just going to be that annoying guy who plagues you all with questions about systems and what not and for this I am very sorry.

Now on to my question?

System: Mutants and Masterminds 2nd Ed

Subject: Object Mimicry

What the hell does this power mean? I understand the theme ala Absorbing Man/Amazing Man.

What I took away from the power description is you get the powers equal to your ranks in Object Mimicry in all the powers that your alternate form would get I.E. Solid: You are made up of a hard substance like stone or metal.
Apply your points to Density, Immunity, and Protection.

So I have my OM rank in Density, Immunity and Proc?

If that is correct then I understand everything so far up until the traits, you get Rank x5 traits in your new form. What the hell does that mean?

I am trying to help my friend come up with a PrC in D&D 3.5 and I don't wanna make anything too OP so I looked at slightly tweaking The Vigilante class from the Complete Adventurer. So these are the changes I made.

Smite the Guilty- Smite Slave Owner
Full BAB
All Good Saves

Limited times per day adds his Charisma Bonus to attack Roll and 1 point of damage per slave owned to a maximum of 2x PRC Level (20 at 10th Level)

Speak with dead and Dimensional Anchor removed


So whats your guys opinion are these changes still within power balance for the system?
