Hey Ross, is the Unknown Armies episode a one shot or the beginning of a campaign?

Not to my knowledge. Given the economic emphasis of RM, how that would work out? I don't see WW1 frontline battles as a good setting for Red Markets.

trinite basically articulated the idea I could not.

You might even say he called me by the stole my thunder.

Given Ethan's use of Red Markets for a Call of Cthulhu scenario in the Civil War, I was wondering if anyone had hacked Red Markets for use in WW1 or 2.  Specifically WW1 trench warfare.

Osprey has a new post-apocalyptic miniature skirmish game out today called Scrappers

Back Cover Text

More than 150 years have passed since the apocalypse that nearly destroyed the Earth. Today, the planet is a torn remnant of its former glory, ravaged by nuclear fallout and mutagens. New lifeforms - Mutants and Synthetics - challenge True Humanity for dominance, while warring factions compete for survival and supremacy, and all must carve out their place in this brutal landscape, or else perish as billions before them. Scrappers is skirmish miniatures game set in the wastelands, where players assemble Scrapper Crews and send them out to scavenge scraps of Ancient technology and battle rival factions. Explorers, cultists and raiders clash with mutated creatures, robotic soldiers and embittered True Humans in this wargame of salvage and survival in the ruins of the future.

$30 for the hardcover book ($18 for the epubs) but you can use any miniatures in their system.

Here is how to make a Warband from a reviewer

Building warbands

Should you stick to the setting of the game, you are presented with a couple of choices for your warband. There are seven factions in the world to pick for your warband, each faction can pick from/or is restricted to one, two or three of the existing life form types, True Human/Mutant/Synthetic.

For instance, the faction called "The Purge" can only have members that are true humans, the "Gamma lords" is a faction purely made up of mutants, while factions like the Ectopians, Architects and Freelancers can mix life forms from of all types in their warband. Each life form type has its own list of traits that make up the basic special rules of a character.

True humans have evolved to be much smarter and have survival instincts, they can re-roll failed gear checks and are harder to kill.

Mutant life forms can re-roll dice on the trauma table after each game if they have been wounded, they ignore some radiation and the mutants are divided into 3 sub-categories providing extra bonuses depending on which type of mutant you create.

Synthetic life forms are immune to gas and poison, can ignore target priority restrictions and also have 3 sub-categories of troops that all have their own bonuses such as being able to carry more weight.

Before you can start playing you have to build your warband. You pick a faction to your liking that comes with its limitations regarding what kind of characters/lifeforms you can recruit. You get your base traits depending on the lifeforms you have recruited. Then you have to give your characters stats which are divided into Combat, Command and Constitution. You can also buy extra traits for your troops, and these are divided into generic and lifeform dependant, there are quite a bunch of traits to pick from for each lifeform type so you can tailor your gang to your liking. There are also a handful of faction specific traits exclusive to the faction you are playing.

Pull a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and make it a world where fictionalized characters from novels are alive.

This is the perfect opportunity for the American Pharaoh to put Sherlock Holmes in a rear naked choke.  Half of the American Pharaoh is angry her country's artifacts were stolen, the other half just wants to punch a poncy brit.

Throw in Batman, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple and Auguste Dupin for a battle royale of American vs British detectives.

To address specific ideas brought up in the podcast:

@Tom :  You mentioned that you liked the idea of writing rules for a "Middle Manager of Villainy," possibly in the superhero genre if memory serves.

According to SA, it seems like most superhero books will deal with base building but not organizational management like you were describing.

However, this iOS/android game Middle Manager of Justice might be inspirational http://middlemanagerofjustice.com/

Also Blades in the Dark does have organization building rules and I do know that they will be releasing a cyberpunk setting hack, so there might be something like that in the product to come.

@Dan: The only Fate book that I could find that may have organization building rules is the free supplement Gods and Monsters.

Anyway, discuss domain management and similar topics!

RPGs / Base Building and Organizational Management in RPGs

In the RPPR podcast episode 139: Chains of Command, Ross Tom and Dan discuss how to play/build an rpg that centers upon organizational management and may touch upon base building or domain management in general.

I love these types of games.

I wanted to know who had already published on these topics, so I queried the Something Awful traditional games hivemind.  If a game line is listed (like Ars Magica) then these organizational rules are in the core book.  Most of the others are supplements to major game lines, as these topics doesn't always get a central focus.

Lex Occultum

Quote from: 'Hiro Protagonist'
Riotminds, creators of Trudvang Chronicles, have put up a translation of their other big roleplaying game, Gotterdammerung, on Kickstarter, under the name Lex Ocultum. It's a really interesting idea. All the secret societies and occult stuff of the 18th and 19th centuries? It was true, and you are the people that had to fight the fuck ups of the ignorant nobility who dabbled in that which man should not know. In a way, it is similar to Call of Cthulhu, and it uses the BRP system, but it is based more heavily in the Enlightenment, with more of a Templars fighting in the background rather than random people swept into the conflict, at least as far I can tell.

@Twisting H: Hickman makes me glad I run a comic shop. I really need to read more of his backlog.

The stellar art of the demonic language/code drew me to the comic, but Hickman's excellent writing really sold the characters and the book.

I felt this would be a must read for any fans of Red Markets or occult detective tales.

Let us know how Frontier is.

Since Ross has interests in the Inca and Aztecs, here's a story.

In 1519, Cortes came to Mexico.  It was estimated the native population was 25 million.  One hundred years later, only 1 million native peoples remained.  What follows next is CSI on a historical scale to answer the question, what pathogens caused the plagues in 1545 and 1576 that contributed to the Aztecs' decline?

Could it be an ancient form of Salmonella, brought from Europe to Mexico?

The Black Monday Murders

All Hail God Mammon

Anyone interested in an occult take on international Finance mixed with plentiful and necessary ritual murder needs to check this out.

Similar to how From Hell weaved a supernatural mythology around the Ripper killings, The Black Monday Murders (all hail God Mammon) builds a daemonical backstory around the tragedies in the esoteric world of the Rothschilds, money and the Stock Market.

And it's host to a straight occult detective story to boot!

Have some quotes:

Grigoria Rothschild "... So... I understand you've become a teacher. I have to say I was suprised when I heard, but it seems to suit you. You look well."

Alexi "I admit. I like it more than I though I would."

GR "And how does this year's crop of future financial titans look?"

Alexi "Oh. Smart. They are smarter every year, it seems.  But they are, unfortunately, a flawed generation. Children of the summer, you seen.  They all believe money falls from the sky.  Not that it is pulled from the Earth.

But they will learn. They always do."

---

Viktor (to classroom of new financiers) "So. You want real advice?  Here it is.  The first million dollars you make is self-financed.  You earn it with your own blood.  The cost is your own health, your family, your friends.

You pay, understand?

The most common mistake is believing that you can accrue even more by continuing this behavior.  You cannot.  If you're going to earn more...if you are going to earn real money-- accumulate real power-- then that is done on the backs of others.

Call them workers, call them proles, even call them slaves.  I do not care. Just know, it is they who you will sacrifice for gain.

This sounds callous, I know. But you're going to learn very quickly how insignificant the rules you have lived by truly are.  What we do falls outside all societal norms... This is the older pact. Man's very first trade."

All Hail God Mammon
