General Chaos / Forum Rules - READ THIS
« on: March 31, 2009, 03:04:18 PM »
I just wanted to create a thread to outline the forum rules so that newcomers know what to expect from this forum when they join. Of course, the audience of RPPR being what it is, we don't get trolling or flame wars. As the forums gets bigger however, the stricter the rules have to be so the quality of threads don't go down. Most of these are simple common sense rules or whims so it cause no great controversy in the community.

Quality = fun and/or intelligent.

- The first and only rule ever written by Ross was the one of anti-censorship. Roleplaying Public Radio doesn't condone censorship and if you censor yourself by saying f**k, motherf*cker or sh!t, a mod will come along and replace those words by proper swear words. Fuck, motherfucker, shit.

- Write in a way other people will understand. That means, avoid excessive typos, there's a spellchecker for a reason. Try to avoid abbreviations too. Some are acceptable but when reading becomes deciphering, there's a problem. Foreigners from whom English is their second language of course won't be shot, but are encouraged to make the effort to improve their grammar. English is MY second language and I've made the effort.

- Don't be a troll, ogre or kobold. We'll fuck you up. No flame wars. You can agree to disagree if you can't simply bring your viewpoint with a well thought out argument.

-No SPAMMING. We'll fuck you up. Shameless plug, I personally don't mind, as long as it's not advertising and it's relevant to the topic at hand. Spamming includes posting pointless shit threads. These threads will be locked.

-Don't be a kender sympathizer. We'll fuck you up.

-If you're going to post a topic or, really, do anything on these forums it better be for the fucking lulz humorous intent. The only reason anything should ever be done ever is for the fucking lulz humorous intents.

-No shotgun posting. Don't make a lot of no content posts, m'kay?

NO IMAGE LEECHING

Anyway, I'd like to hear all of your suggestions for rules to help maintain the forums the way we love it.  And I'd like to know if there's current users that for whatever reason might have problems with swearing, because of their job or whatever.

NO POLITICAL BULLSHIT IN THIS FORUM - Nothing that is designed to enrage people and anything else that detracts from the message board.

ALL IMAGES MUST BE SAFE FOR WORK

NO PIRACY DISCUSSION OR LINKS

DON'T LINK TO PORN

NO MISOGYNY OR HOMOPHOBIA

NO WEIRD POSTS ABOUT WHAT SEXUALLY EXPLICIT THINGS YOU WOULD WANT TO PERFORM ON OR HAVE PERFORMED ON YOU BY MEMBERS OF THE RPPR CREW OR REGULAR FORUM GOERS WITH THE EXCLUSION OF ROSS WHO IS A HORRIBLE MONSTER.

As some of you are aware, the RPPR forums have a "Search" button that allows you to find appropriate threads to post ideas before starting a new thread. For those of you that are not aware of this, I made this handy picture:

Well, first off, can anyone other than Ross guess what this is? (It has to do with RPPR)

General Chaos / ...forensics.
« on: March 25, 2009, 12:04:14 AM »
To the good people of RPPR, here is the actual meaning of "forensics":
Quote
Forensic science (often shortened to forensics) is the application of a broad spectrum of sciences to answer questions of interest to the legal system. This may be in relation to a crime or to a civil action. But besides its relevance to the underlying legal system, more generally forensics encompasses the accepted scholarly or scientific methodology and norms under which the facts regarding an event, or an artifact, or some other physical item (such as a corpse, or cadaver, for example) are to the broader notion of authentication whereby an interest outside of a legal form exists in determining whether an object is in fact what it purports to be, or is alleged as being.

The word “forensic” comes from the Latin adjective “forensis” meaning of or before the forum. During the time of the Romans, a criminal charge meant presenting the case before a group of public individuals in the forum. Both the person accused of the crime and the accuser would give speeches based on their side of the story. The individual with the best argument and delivery would determine the outcome of the case. Basically, the person with the sharpest forensic skills would win. This origin is the source of the two modern usages of the word "forensic" - as a form of legal evidence and as a category of public presentation.

In modern use, the term "forensics" in place of "forensic science" can be considered incorrect as the term "forensic" is effectively a synonym for "legal" or "related to courts". However, the term is now so closely associated with the scientific field that many dictionaries include the meaning that equates the word "forensics" with "forensic science".

I'm posting it in the hope that if you didn't originally know what it correctly meant, you now do and will from now on use the word "forensic" correctly. Just today, I have once again heard it used as a vague word meaning "medicine shit with dead bodies and stuff, y'know, like in CSI and shit" on the broad media. The smart way to go about ignorance is to find out about it, not to draw a vague meaning by contextualizing it. I'm sure most of you listeners are really smart people and already know that, but feel free to tell me to go eat shit or to give your input on this. And if I hear "forensics" once again, I will punch holes through your skull with a jackhammer singing "The house of the Rising Sun". I love that song.

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Actual Play: Murder of Crows
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:21:08 PM »
I've FINALLY got around to listening to the Murder of Crows actual play run by Jon Hook.

It was mostly because I ran out of podcasts to listen to although the only reason I didn't listen to it the first time around was the lack of time and the background noise being too distracting. I am glad I did though because I thought it was an excellent game.

First off, I gotta commend Jon for his awesome impressions of NPCs. You are great.

But, I've also wondered about the whole resolution thing, if the players weren't supposed to go shoot Walker, what were they to do? How were they supposed to get to him? And why were there crows and other stuff all over the place?

I've heard it mentioned a few times already but I've finally found the article in question, to quote this precious gem of journalism:

Quote
"There is no reason an adult should have this game," says Andy Anderson, Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force.
Anderson says adults playing "animal crossing" and similar games are likely doing it for the wrong reasons.

From this website: http://www.kmiz.com/news/story.php?id=13725

I thought it would be perfect for a photoshop thread: Introducing mature/twisted themes in kid-oriented games.

I made this in 10 minutes (as I really should be going to bed right now) to start things off, but I'll try to make some more as it goes on.

P-s: I actually love the man's music, he's just scary looking.

General Chaos / Photoshop artists?
« on: March 18, 2009, 08:13:09 PM »
Hey,
I was wondering who here is pretty good with photoshop or other similar programs. Or even remotely capable for that matter. If there are others interested, it could be fun to have threads from time to time making funny photoshop images of things roleplaying-related or whatever like somethingawful does.

What are your thoughts?
