Saw a newly-restored cult canuxploitation classic last night:

This kitschy cult-comedy/sci-fi/horror/musical plays like an Ed Wood film mixed with a punk rock musical. In the fictional small town of Burquitlam, B.C., local butcher Bob (Dawson) hires a mysterious hulking assistant, Abdulla the Turk (jazz musician Clarence ‘Big’ Miller), who loves butchering a bit too much. Meanwhile, a teenage genius (Andrew Gillies) from a family of Moldovan immigrants conducts strange experiments with a stolen car – and that’s just the vague outline of a plot that ranges from mildly bizarre to completely absurd. Oh, and yes, it’s a musical.

Soooo.... Grapevine yay?

The Abhorrent I threw at the players in Episode 4 was a variant-of-a-variant, in essence an Ever-Vec that prolongs its existence by blight-grafting (Ganglia-style) fresh body parts to itself in order to keep the Blight animating it Hot.  Like most Abhorrents, the origin of the Chimaera is unknown; speculation has placed it as either an experiment gone wrong (thanks, DHQS!) or what happens when a large number of people go Vector within a short timeframe and one (or more) are taken down while close to a mobile vector.

As the pieces decay, it will shed them in favor of grafting new appendages.  This means that the Blight is always considered Hot, and the Chimaera functions on the same level as a Vector in terms of intellect; as it always has a minimum of one fresh brain, the Chimaera is even capable of rudimentary ambush tactics and a modicum of intelligence.  As it increases in mass, however, it becomes slower as the sheer size of the creature impedes its movement.

Due to the nature of its flesh, it should be treated as though it has additional hitboxes equal to half the total of amalgamated body parts for that particular hit box (i.e. 3 extra left legs will give the Chimaera 15 extra boxes on the left leg; 2 additional heads will give it 10 extra boxes on the face.) The Murder Modifier for the creature is treated as 1+(1 for every 30 additional hitboxes) for the purposes of damage only; speed is equal to 4- Murder Modifier to a minimum of 1.

No two Chimaera look alike.  The ways they Blight-graft additional flesh to themselves vary so much that in their own way these things are fleshy snowflakes, each horrifically unique.  Some will layer flesh over flesh, building armor-like structures. Some will extend limbs, some will opt for multiple limbs.  Describe them in whatever body-horror-inducing way you wish, they will function similarly.  Longer limbs might give the creature reach, thicker hide may give it a modicum of armor; it is entirely up to the Market to decide the level of Cronenberg

A Chimaera can be killed by completely depleting the hit boxes of head or torso.  Destroying all of a set of leg or arm hitboxes will slow the beast down- until it adjusts to the new Murder Modifier. 

When in danger, a Chimaera *might* shed the outermost layer of flesh in order to flee; in this case, it will return within a session to attack the party again.

When the investigators head east into the wilderness from Santaquin, Utah, they didn't expect to find a fog-shrouded valley filled with impossible, prehistoric beasts.

On April 8, I continued the Call of Cthulhu Down Darker Trails campaign "The Catastrophe Engine" with the original scenario "The Last Valley.

It's Springtime in San Francisco with many loose ends to tie up and, once that's done, it's time to head back for Midnight and then east to Colorado, where a town might be in danger.

On April 1, 2018, I continued the Call of Cthulhu Down Darker Trails campaign "The Catastrophe Engine" with the original "Spring in San Francisco" notes and the Deadlands Dime Novel Scenario “Worms!” by John Goff.

It's time for one last return of the Lovecraft Country Cousins.  Created by Oscar Rios for his scenarios "Christmas in Kingsport" and "Halloween in Dunwich," I put together a third scenario for the children entitled "Valentine's in Innsmouth" as the player who played Alice wanted to explore her history.  In this case, Alice Sanders gets the cousins together for a foray into her old hometown, still under martial law and government watch since the raid of February 1928 on Innsmouth.  But Alice needs to find her Aunt Margie, who she thinks is still there.

On March 25, I ran this last original scenario of the six cousins from across Massachusetts, all of them ready to help their cousin Alice with what might be the most important event in her young life.

In search of someone to translate the scroll Professor Stalloid found in Midnight, California, the investigators enter Chinatown and speak to a lawyer there.  Then, they see two tongs at battle until a demon disrupts the fighting.  It is thought something terrible is going on in Chinatown and they decide to find out what.

On March 18, 2018, I ran the fourth session of the Down Darker Trails Campaign.  "Dark Tongs of Chinatown" was based on The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. episode “And Baby Makes Three” as well as Big Trouble in Little China.  It's the fifth game of the Catastrophe Engine Campaign.

Having arrived in Los Angeles, the investigators learn the Crescent is being taken north to San Francisco on the locomotive Sequoyah Star and her train.  They get tickets and go along for the ride.  But not all of the people on the train are what they seem, and soon they find themselves defending the train and its passengers from raiders on the ground and the sky above.

On March 11, 2018, I ran the third session of the Down Darker Trails campaign.  "Terror on the Sequoyah Star" was adapted from the Aces & Eights scenario "Trouble on the Sequoyah Star" by Jolly Blackburn and is the third game in the Catastrophe Engine Campaign set in 1875.

I'm a little torn on this.  I bought the original pre-painted, blind-box, "collectible" Monsterpocalypse when it came out a decade ago.  I love kaiju, and mecha, and skirmish wargames, and I loved the game itself, but I didn't care for the local tournament scene.  I'll try not to get my hopes up, but I might not be able to resist.

On their way to Los Angeles in pursuit of the Crescent, a group of investigators gets lost and ends up in the tiny southern California town of Midnight instead.  It seems a ghost has risen and is getting revenge on those who wronged him.  Can they help?
