Hastur reading list
« on: November 12, 2014, 01:28:12 PM »
So, I thought it worth checking in here for suggestions on Hastur related reading.

I have a few books relevant to the subject:-
The king in yellow
the hastur cycle
a season in Carcosa
Rehearsals for Oblivion (Act I)(which while largely dross contains the essential stories Ambrose and Broadalbin)

I have a few other, such as the yellow wall paper which I consider essential reading.

But it occurred to me that you guys might have other suggestions.

I'd especially recommend the story "The River of Night's Dreaming," by Karl Edward Wagner. It's apparently included in The Hastur Cycle, so you'll find it there.

And I'll always recommend the works of Thomas Ligotti as excellent literary horror. While not technically a part of the Hastur mythos (as he doesn't use elements directly from Chambers or Bierce), many of his stories deal with very similar themes of madness, exposure to malign literary influence, and the confusion between literary imagination and reality. Of particular note are "Gas Station Carnivals," "Teatro Grottesco," and "The Bungalow House," all of which deal with the horror of experiencing certain creative works, and all of which can be found in the reasonably-priced paperback collection Teatro Grottesco.

New Tales of the Yellow Sign by Robin Laws is a must read collection.

The new anthology Sword and Mythos has an excellent Carcosa-based story. Forgot the title but it's pretty baller.

True Detective is a must watch - you're probably aware of it but I just want to mention it.

I still have to forcibly stop myself frothing about true detective at every opportunity. Such a good series. Thanks for the tips Ross.
