RPPR Episode 10: Filling in the Flavor Text

Hosted by Ross Payton and Tom Church
Music by Ghosts I-IV by Nine Inch Nails released under a Creative Commons license

Synopsis:
Creating adventures for your group can be a pain in the but but we’re here to help. The players can be heartless jerks who stomp all over your plot, massacre your poor NPCs or generally wreck mayhem on your plans. Improvisation is the hallmark of a good gamemaster and we discuss several techniques to prep for the next game.

Shout Outs:
Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic: A great D&D themed web comic featuring great art and an engaging light hearted story. It even updates on a daily basis unlike some other D&D themed web comics…

Betrayal at House on the Hill: A fun board game of supernatural horror with an innovative variable scenario rule set.

Rifftrax: If you liked Mystery Science Theater 3000, you’ll love Rifftrax. For a few dollars you can download a mp3 commentary of a popular movie by MST3K writer and host Mike Nelson (plus others) making fun of the movie. From Roadhouse to the Matrix Reloaded, Rifftrax is worth the few dollars it costs.

Zero Punctuation: A fast talking British game reviewer who isn’t afraid to give us his honest opinion of popular games like Guitar Hero 3, with an accompanying computer animated video to go along with it.

  1. Great stuff so far guys. I’m pretty new to the site, but I look forward to much more discussion and gameplay awesomeness.

  2. Just wanted to say I’ve really enjoyed your podcast since I started listening back in November. You two have a great camaraderie that makes your conversations lively and engaging. Tom’s letters are always entertaining. And Ross, your GM stories always give me a new bit of advice to consider.

    Keep up the good work!

I sent an email to you. Thanks for helping!

  6. Hey there!

Just going through the backlog of episodes to catch up.

This episode doesn’t appear in the “March 2008” entries when I use the Archives drop-down.

  7. Oops, never mind. I didn’t click the “Next Page” link at the bottom of the page…

  8. I just discovered this site and listened to the (quality) podcast because I was searching for flavor text to make some items I’m creating that much more exceptional. There is a surprising lack of great flavor text, at least that I could find thus far…but playing Disciples III Resurrection they have some that is so amazing it really makes the game. Example, a scroll that reduces dexterity reads the amount and then this quote: “And the worthiest warriors were like old crones. Not being able to hold their swords anymore, they feel to their knees and pleaded.” AWESOME. Guess being an English major instead of computer science might have paid off here…this one time.
