I recently discovered the films of Peter Watkins.  I heard about one of his films (guess which one) from The Atomic Age blog and Podcast at Ground Zero, and when I went looking for it, I found that a local independent video rental store (is there any other kind these days?) had a number of his films in their directors section.

The War Game: A 1965 docu-drama that takes a realistic look at the possible effects of nuclear war on Britain.  This film so scared the British government that it was banned for twenty years.

The Gladiators: Predating both The Hunger Games and Battle Royal, this film is a cold war satire in which generals from east and west preside over a series of televised “Peace Games” in which soldiers fight to the death over nonexistent objectives.

Punishment Park:  Filmed in 1970 and set in a near future American dystopia in which President Nixon has declared a state of national emergency, this is an oddly prescient film from a modern point of view.  Punishment Park depicts a militarized U.S. in which police and national guard troops brutalize civil rights and antiwar protesters.  Crazy right?  Never gonna happen.  What stood out most to me, when watching Punishment Park in 2014, was the lack of heavy duty military equipment; the cops are armed with revolvers & shotguns and drive around in Crown Vic’s without any body armour.  Compared to the cops in many modern U.S. cities, even the national guard troops in this film look woefully under-equipped.

The first Iranian Vampire Western ever made, Ana Lily Amirpour's debut basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave.

Best Iranian Vampire Western ever!

Seriously, it's a beautiful film.  Amirpour's use of light & shadow, sound and pacing is impressive, particularly considering that this is her feature film debut.

Here's a weird story about a famous deaf Japanese composer -- who it turns out had been faking it for 15 years, as a talented ghostwriter composed all his music:

http://www.newrepublic.com/article/121185/japans-deaf-composer-wasnt-what-he-seemed

Fun fact: he composed music for Onimusha: Warlords and Resident Evil: Dual Shock Ver. (or rather, his ghostwriter did).

A side-scrolling horror comedy visual novel, inspired by the works of H.P Lovecraft and classic survival horror!

Overview

Plunge headlong into the writhing depths of The Miskatonic, a side-scrolling, horror comedy visual novel, packed with bizarre and hilarious dialogue, a cadre of warped and damaged students and faculty, and an intriguing, devious narrative! Chat jovially with the local abominations, scout revolting locations for occult expeditions, and investigate the innate strangeness within!

Key Features
-A slightly odd female protagonist - Charlotte LeStrange has her own secret motivations and ambitions beyond the university’s knowledge, that go beyond her implicit desires to summon Shub-Niggurath. And the university has plans for her of their own.

-An evolving hub world - Watch the university grow, rot and stuff itself with strange artefacts as Charlotte traipses around New England on her edritch adventures.
Old school survival horror puzzles - Find etched keys to open corresponding doors, solve blood-drenched codes and trade weird and warped collectibles for information.
JRPG style dialogue cutscenes - Interact with monsters, mutants and generally strange people drawn in a soot and gore-covered cartoon art style, complete with harrowingly humorous dialogue.

-Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft - A unique and comparatively light-hearted take on the master of horror’s monstrous world. Parodies and references hide in the dark little corners of the story, waiting for Lovecraft fanatics to find.

-Blow holes in monsters with Charlotte’s overly huge shotgun - Because sometimes the cosmic horrors refuse to cooperate.

Some of the art is creative.

The rest however...

Saw this a couple of weeks ago, but just now remembered to share it here:

Quote
Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her 'out of control' 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

RE/Search’s Vale and JG Ballard on William Burroughs

Quote
Noted San Francisco underground publisher V Vale has been publishing since 1977, when, with $200 he was given by Beat poet Allen Ginsberg and poet/ City Lights bookstore owner Lawrence Ferlinghetti ($100 from each), he put out 11 issues of the Search And Destroy punk zine. In 1980 he started RE/Search, an imprint which still puts out infrequent volumes on subjects like schlock therapy trash movies, JG Ballard, punk, modern primitives, supermasochists, torture gardens, pranks, angry women, bodily fluids.anything and everything taboo and alternative and unreported was and is fair grist to Vale’s subversive ever-churning wordmill.

In 1982 he put out RE/Search #4/5, a three-section volume including William S. Burroughs, with the other two sections being about Throbbing Gristle and the artist Brion Gysin, WSB’s friend and collaborator who’d introduced the writer to the ‘cut-up’ method of rearranging his texts to show what they really mean.

The Burroughs section of the book include an interview with Burroughs by Vale (who is mentioned in Burroughs’ Last Words), an unpublished chapter from Cities of The Red Night, two excerpts from The Place of Dead Roads, two “Early Routines,” an article on “The Cut-Up Method of Brion Gysin” and ‘The Revised Boy Scout Manual’ which is a piece in which Burroughs muses revealingly on armed revolution and weapons-related revelation.

I talked to the amiable publisher about this interesting volume, but only about Burroughs, because he was the reason I wanted to read the thing in the first place; neither of the other two subjects much interest me, to be perfectly honest. It’s an interesting volume that any Burroughs enthusiast would definitely enjoy. So join us as we (me with occasionally incomprehensible-to-American-ears Scottish accent) take a trip down memory lane and talk about snakebite serum, dark-skinned young boys, the City Lights bookstore, independent publishing, aphorisms, Fox News’s hateful right-wing Christian conservative pop-agitprop, the madness of Tony Blair and avoiding mad drunks with guns.

And after the interview with Vale you will find the answers to a few questions JG Ballard was kind enough to answer me by mail about his own relationship with El Hombre Invisible.

RE/Search #4/5:

I discovered RE/Search (specifically, RE/Search #4/5) in a now defunct record store back when I was in highschool.  I was aware of Burroughs, though I hadn't read him, but I had heard that David Cronenberg was working on a movie adaptation of Naked Lunch.  I devoured that issue of RE/Search, then the issues on J.G. Ballard, Modern Primitives*, The Industrial Culture Handbook, and a host of Burroughs' & Ballard's writing.

V.Vale's RE/Search was my introduction to two of my favorite authors and a whole alternative world of literature, music and art.

Scifi short films useful for games

Need to introduce new players to Eclipse Phase? Here is Wanderers, which imagines colonization of the solar system.  It features base jumping in zero g, swooping around the atmosphere of Venus on your own personal wings and zeppelins floating about what could possibly be Mars.

Ambition

Quote
Academy Award-nominated director Tomek Baginksi collaborated with the European Space Agency to create this breathtaking film about a magician who creates solar systems (played by Game of Thrones' Aidan Gillen) and his apprentice. It's a lovely tribute to the Rosetta mission.

This is great inspiration for Numenera or similar science-fantasy settings.

Thief of Faces (El Ladrón de Caras)

An award winning Spanish animated noir short.  The first half is great fodder/atmosphere for Call of Cthulhu, the last half is masterful storytelling.  Strangely it feels like it was made bespoke for advertising Bryson Springs.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS chronicles the adventures of four vampire roommates trying to get by in a modern world that's not always hospitable to the undead. Clement and Waititi, creators of the HBO hit series "Flight of the Conchords," co-wrote, co-directed, and co-star in this hilarious send-up in which an endearingly unhip quartet of friends reveal to us or, rather, to the documentary crew that's filming them, the details of their daily-make that nightly-routine. Ranging in age from 183 to 8,000, and in appearance from adorably youthful to Nosferatu-crusty, they squabble over household chores, struggle to keep up with the latest trends in technology and fashion, antagonize the local werewolves, cruise clubs for lovely ladies, and deal with the rigors of living on a very, very strict diet. The film also stars Rhys Darby, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stu Rutherford, and Jackie Van Beek, and was produced by Waititi, Chelsea Winstanley and Emanuel Michael.

If you are into Bloodborn, here is a comic the predates it and is very similar.

The Marquis by Guy Davis.

Quote from: 'Wikipedia'
The Marquis takes place in Venisalle, a fictional land resembling France during the mid-18th century, complete with stratified society and Church dominance of everyday affairs. The story revolves around Vol de Galle, a former Inquisitor of The Faith who has the ability to see demons, many of which have infiltrated society disguised in human form. De Galle combats these entities with his sabre and a pair of specially built, anachronistic machine guns.

A main plot point is De Galle's visions of demons. Are they real or is he going mad?

Sound familiar? The answer is actually narrative interesting.

The Marquis stories were released in 2001 and 2003 under the titles The Marquis: Danse Macabre and The Marquis: Intermezzo.

They were combined in the graphic novel The Marquis: Inferno.  Available here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Marquis-Volume-1-Inferno/dp/1595823689
