Like all things, I am a horrible monster when it comes to music. I pretty much live on electronic music of various genres. I'll listen to some albums or mixes for a few months, get bored of it, then find something new to obsess over. Lately, I've gotten into synthwave more deeply, after getting bored of drum and bass and electro-house (essential mix and various mixes I downloaded from youtube and edm blogs). A few days ago I downloaded a bunch of synthwave albums and I am now listening to a playlist of these tracks on random:

I need to build up my vaporwave playlist for late night listening/Ruin writing - so far I only have Infinity Frequencies and coolmemoryz for it.

The key for me is trying to find cheap/pay what you want. I don't want to pay 10 bucks for an album, because I have no idea how often I'll actually listen to it. Every time I actually buy a full price album, it seems I never get into it, but cheap/free albums always seem to work better for me. Probably a cognitive bias, but I want a huge playlist so I'm not listening to the same tracks over and over. If an album is really good, I might buy it.  I prefer to download mp3s over streaming services because of ads, unstable internet connection and the fact that every streaming service has a limited library for my weird ass tastes.

Anyway, this thread is for music discussion - recommend me good synthwave or vaporwave or DnB mixes or liquid dubstep or talk about other types of music and otherwise derail this thread.

I've been told my tastes in music is both "eclectic" and "god you are a hipster-douche."  I am also a middle school teacher, so I am subjected to whatever strange music the keedz these days listen to.  I mostly listen to music via the streaming services (lately it has been mostly Amazon Prime), but when I do buy music, I typically wait for an iTunes or Amazon MP3 sale and get them for teh cheap.

Here are some of my favs:

Of Montreal - hipster indie-pop.  Like, HARDCORE hipster indie-pop.  But most of it is gewd, yo. 

Two Door Cinema Club - moar indie-pop, but more POPPY. 

Scissor Sisters - An amazing mixture of Elton John/Bowie/80s Synth Pop/All Things Glam.  Their most peppy songs are also extremely dark, which is fun.

Lana Del Rey - She has a pretty voice and swears and sings about sex and booze.  Joy.

60s/70s Motown - LIKE A HEAT WAVE MOTHERFUCKAS!! 

Beatles - It's the Beatles. 

Empire of the Sun - Australian electro-pop where they dress like fantasy/sci-fi dudez.

I'm glad someone started this thread, I've been tempted to a few times.I’m a little bit alt-country little bit sludge/doom metal.  I'm also a bit of a music snob.  I'm currently an teacher in an alternative school (I've seen some shit) so I usually hear shitty teen angst metal by bands that have hair cuts like the sheep dog from the Willie Coyote cartoons or various genres of rap.  To quote either David Wong or John Cheese, it is akin to being stabbed in the ear by a frozen but sharpened dog turd.
My daughter is also on a Frozen kick, so I've been subjected to "Let It Go" several times this week.

  Watched this movie based on recommendation from the actual play for Lord of the Peaks. Movie is good but crazy and the soundtrack is great if you main lined too much synth in the 80's, as I did, your own mileage might vary.

Pretty much the definitive grrrl rock band and one of the best alt rock bands in the last ten years. Also, just come back together to be amazing again! This makes me happy, in my parts. Lyrical but powerful, especially when they were being super-political in the early-2000's.

Sky Larkin are a Northern English indie-rock band that I've been following for a while now and I don't think they've seen me yet shh. This version is a serene bleep-bloop rendering of what's honestly one of the saddest songs I've ever heard and adds a dreamlike quality to what is basically a song about a car crash.

Okay, I'll be impressed if there's a nerdier entry in this thread. It's the solo project of one of the violinists from Arcade Fire and again, this is the full album I'm talking about listen to it listen. Because in 2005's He Poos Clouds, 8 out of the 10 tracks are based around the schools of magic from Dungeons and Dragons. (This Lamb Sells Condos, which is about conjuration, also references both the Drow and Canadian realtors. Many Lives ->49 MP is about divination etc.). Of the other two songs, one the title track (He Poos Clouds), a love song to Link. Yes, him from Legend of Zelda. It's better than it sounds.

LC are one of my favourite bands because of the story they imply; they started out as a university hipster-pop band with songs like "You! Me! Dancing!" and then somewhere between album 1 and album 2, something changed. It's not that someone broke the lead singer's heart, they shat in his soul. So a lot of their songs have these great disconnect between the poppy melodies and rhythms and then crushing lyrics. This particular one stands out to me more for the video than most, which is like a wedding video directed by Eli Roth. So, there's that.

Most of my music is streamed via Pandora, so I guess I'll post my profile if you ever want to listen to the stations I curate. I listen to a couple of stations the most:

An all-female singer-songwriter station (mostly Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple, Florence + The Machine, and Amy Winehouse)

This station that's a weird mixture of gypsy punk (e.g. Gogol Bordello, Devotchka), Irish music (e.g. Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues, The Dubliners), and Korpiklaani.

And a nerdcore station (mostly MC Frontalot and Schaffer the Darklord).

I also like other stuff:

The soundtrack to Hackers is pretty awesome, especially Halcyon On and On by Orbital. 90s electronica at its finest.

Bohren und der Club of Gore is awesome minimalist jazz.

Type O Negative is really funny, tongue-in-cheek metal.

I'm a huge fan of pretty much anything Blake Schwarzenbach does, from his punk outfit Jawbreaker, his alt-rock emoish band Jets to Brazil, hell even forgetters.
