pretty much everything in the candle cove world was just a prop except for the skin taker. Only the skin taker had a free will and possessed any real intelligence. So it would have been just the priest and the skin taker and the skin taker is an immortal demon that has existed since before the dawn of mankind. Does that answer your question?

Yeah. I thought the jaguar was some sort of other entity, like opposed to the Skin-taker.

nope just a construct built by the director and the director based it on tropes from kid's tv and literature. So it was basically a pre-programmed magical robot.

Someone emailed me for advice on running Candle Cove. This is my reply.

What was the Skin Taker supposed to be? I was leaning towards goetic demon from Mage but I don't have the mage book so I purposely left it vague. It is whatever works best for your game.

From a game design perspective, Candle Cove was meant to emulate a Hitchcock film's basic structure: multiple characters chasing after the same macguffin - in this case, the Candle Cove VHS. In order to make it more dynamic, I had two opposing antagonists: the cult and the skin taker. The cult had very limited supernatural resources so they relied on mundane techniques - goons, subterfuge and the like. The skin taker could only briefly manifest in the real world so it was limited as well. This set up gave me a lot of latitude in running encounters and keeping things exciting.

Hope this helps.

I emailed Kris Straub (the guy who wrote Candle Cove and the artist behind starslip crisis and chainsaw suit) about Candle Cove.

He posted a link to the game on his sites

This is my favorite quote:

Quote
Yeah, this is totally an April Fools joke.

Though knowing this group, if they really did have a CoC game that ended in summoning Azathoth and ending the world, they'd be touting it as the greatest game in the history of the universe. One of the other games they keep bringing up on their podcast as best game ever was a Call of Cthulhu yakuza game that ended with the PCs taking a machine gun off a crashed WW2 fighter, hauling it over to their enemies' 200-man-strong fortress, annihilating half of them, and then charging the other hundred in a big, all-out battle where they're just slaughtered, and it all ends with the last surviving PC leaping out a third-story window, katana in hand (because of course in a yakuza game, ya gotta have katanas) to take down one last enemy before dying a swift and messy death.

hey ross, I was re listening to one of the episodes when I heard something about another WW2 Tom game with the KGB or something like that.

Will this game be going up before the end of the year, or is this game in the vault?
