I should really read an entire thread before I respond.

you should watch amv hell 3
<a href="" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win"></a>

Fire in the disco!

I mostly like screwed up kid movies.

Secret of Nimh is pretty good. The sequels, made more recently, are more 'child friendly'.

The Thief and the Cobbler (AKA Arabian Knight). A weird movie that looks like its been totally redubbed for english but was actually made like it seems.

Swan Princess, a more friendly version of the Swan Lake story that's still got drama in it. Fairly strong female lead, compared to other stories.

FernGully: The Last Rainforest, if you can find it. About as heavy handed an eco-movie as your likely to meet but Tim Curry voices the bad guy and its good some cool visuals.

Thanks for the AMV Hell, That really made me feel better about that movie. Its not sad to sing along to them is it?

Secret of Nimh was one of my favorite movies as a kid.

Btw more ones not to go for are Watership Down(
<a href="" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win"></a>
) and Plague Dogs (
<a href="" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win"></a>

Oh, and the very second that your kid has become desensitized enough not to be bothered by exploding heads and the work fuck, make them watch "Hot Fuzz". Best movie ever.

I saw Aliens, La Dolce Vita, the Seventh Seal and the Seven Samurai when I was in grade school - like 4th or 5th grade at the latest. My parents showed them to me. I didn't think that was unusual at the time but I got a lot of blank stares when I told the other kids about them during school.

In fact, my parents made sure that I wasn't sheltered or ignorant of art or the larger world. While I could always watch R rated films, they also dragged me to art galleries and stuff like that.

Soo maybe show them serious art films as well?

If you want the kids to turn out like Ross.

Not judging; just saying: living example of experimental child movie/art gallery based child rearing.

or like my brother - he speaks fluent Japanese, is bored by anime and works for a Japanese TV network covering American politics in Washington D.C. He gets to travel around the world on someone else's dime and has been on the news for a few segment, interviewing Americans etc.

So, results may vary.

Also, The Princess Bride was a great movie. I mean, anything with Andre in it has got to be good...

Plus, it is often a good first taste of adventuring for the kids :)

My TA for my Physics lab was described as a "people-sized Andre-the-Giant."  I must say, it is a very accurate description, proportionally sized and looks similar...

Wow, it's been so long since I thought of that one. That movie was bad ass.
