Ever since I saw the comic for the Engineer update for TF2, I had been sorta fixating on this panel from the "Loose Cannon" comic, and it gave me an idea for (what I think) would be a solid one-shot.

Mutants & Masterminds:  Team Fortress 1862



Really, the source comic provides enough characters to create a viable story hook, and the setting allows for 9 pregenerated characters that most people would be familiar with.

I had thought about running the game in Wushu or Risus (to better fit the spirit of the source material), but I think it deserves a more rule-heavy system than that.

I don't want to think about it too much more because I can't tell if this is retarded or genius.

The idea is neat, but I think it would be hard to execute well.  You would have to really throw out a lot of the stuff from the actual game because I don't think it would feel right to try and do something from the game without having a lot of death and respawning.  It could be neat to make characters, but having 9 PCs would be tough to work with.

I guess my view on it is, it could work, but I wouldn't feel comfortable enough in my creative skills to make the scenario and run it...

Yeah, my plan was to run it for 4 people, and let each of them pick one of the pre-gens.  It would probably be a mission in the spirit of the game (such as stealing intel or taking a cart of nitro to blow up another team's base), and they would probably be encountering a lot of nameless, faceless bad guys, only running into members from the other team at a plot point.

Obviously, there exist a lot more problems here (such as balancing PCs and making a scenario that doesn't force someone to play medic).

Hmm...  Now that I think about it more, I think you could pull it off.  It would be a little tricky but you could do it (yeah for some reason didn't think about limiting characters).  If you would like any help, I would be happy to lend my experience with the game (TF2 that is) to character/scenario creation.  You could just plan a seperate scenario for each type of game mode, which could be neat (maybe leave out arena and something like King of the Hill)...

Isn't the TF2 universe perpetually in a state of Civil War?

From the picture, I was thinking more of an Old West sort of theme, with a bit of Steampunk here and there (mostly for the medic, because roleplaying 19th century medicine would be agonizing and probably only kill more players than it would save).

Nope, just two teams of mercenaries hired by the BLU and the RED to fight each other.

Maybe I'll post my ideas for characters and setting up here when they come to me.  I'm always happy to take suggestions, too (i r not riter).

Presently, I haven't come up with much more than that the plot will be based on Payload and CTF.  As I stated in my first post, it will probably be something along the lines of "Wheel this cart of nitro over to this facility and bring back whatever intel you can find," but with much less ham in my fists.  Trying to sneak a cart full of nitro somewhere seems really cartoony to me and sorta fits the vibe of TF2, I think.  Plus, defending a cart of nitro will probably require a bit of tactical prowess (though it sorta comes down to "save or die" at that point, since 1 bullet can probably set off a whole cart).

As for characters: 

Scout will probably be set up with a Force-a-nature equivalent (Device:  Blast and Leaping), low toughness, and the Speed power.

Soldier:  Haven't though much about it yet, but probably has some sort of repeater.  Special weapon should be the Equalizer (Strike and speed power progression for every injury)

Pyro:  Everything about this is still applicable in 1862.

Demoman:  What you see in the picture.  Experimental TNT slings.  Not really sure how that'll work, but probably another application of Blast (area: explosion)

Heavy:  High Toughness Score, experimental Gatling Gun (takes a round to set up and is immobile while in use), Drawback:  Lower Speed

Engineer:  Animate Objects.  Maybe create the combat mini-sentries (how does boiled water discern alliances?).  Maybe swap the Gatling gun to him and give the Heavy something else.

Sniper:  'Nuff said.  Lots of aiming and sneak attack feats.

Medic:  Probably uses some steampunk version of the medigun.  Radiation from the device gives him mild regenerative abilities.

Spy:  Disguise Kit is essential.  Not sure about an invis-watch equivalent.

Also, I should probably give all of them awesome 19th-century names.

With this, many of the characters seem to be characitures of actual historical/fictional historical figures, so you should just go wtih that.  As far as I can tell/have heard you have:

Pyro: Abraham Lincoln
Heavy: John Henry
Engineer: Nikola Tesla
Sniper: Davy Crockett
Spy: Fu Manchu

I like that idea.  The other team should be the reverse caricatures (or others of significance):

Pyro:  Jefferson Davis
Heavy: Steam-powered gunning machine
Engineer:  Thomas Edison
Sniper:  Matthew Quigley
Spy: Allan Pinkerton

More name/archetype ideas (putting them all together into one mash):

Scout: Harriet Tubman? / ???
(one friend joked that "she was a runner, right?" and the idea of Harriet Tubman running around with a double-barrel makes me smile, I just don't know a good counter for that)

Soldier: Buffalo Bill / Wild Pecos Bill
I might make Pecos Bill a scout, given his ability to literally ride the wind.

Pyro: Abraham Lincoln / Jefferson Davis

Demoman:  William Tecumseh Sherman / Robert E. Lee
Sherman Demolished everything, and his portrait paints him about as crazy as the demoman in the photo.

Heavy:  John Henry / Steam-Powered Gunning Machine

Engineer:  Nikola Tesla / Thomas Edison

Sniper: Davy Crocket / Matthew Quigley

Medic:  Florence Nightingale / Louie Pasteur
I was also considering Marie Curie in there (her medigun just irradiates everything, and more irradiation = Ubercharge), but she seems a little too "Space Age" for this game.

Spy:  Fu Manchu / Allan Pinkerton

I think the biggest thing with teams would to decide whether you want a "good" and "bad" team (i.e. traditionally positively represented vs. traditionally negatively represented), or if you distribute them evenly (more likely with something like corporate espionage).  I must say, the more I think about this, the more absurdly awesome it becomes, I can totally imagining it working out.  If you want some help on it, you could set up a Google Wave and have multiple people help out.

EDIT:  Oh, and for the cowboys, I was kind of thinking of Pecos Bill and Buffalo Bill.  I kind of like the name parallel, though I think they kind of fail to capture the "patriotism" aspect of the soldier (but then again, patriotism was kind of idealized American in the 50's, and the wild west was kind of the idealized American in the 1860s, so it kind of works the same)...

I was going with RED being the PC team (since they're the ones that always invade in Meet the Team), but maybe not casting characters to a team in the beginning might work better.

Also, I've never worked with Google Wave before.  I did find a complete tutorial on it, but it kinda looks like I need to already have people in my GMail contacts list first?

Edit to your Edit: I forgot about the Bills.  Thanks for reminding me of them.
