: How did you find RPPR?
: clockworkjoe February 23, 2010, 02:16:59 PM
So, how did you find this little corner of the Internet?

What made you sign up for the forums?

ORDER66 YOU MUST ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS

This was actually the one good thing that iTunes has done for me.  I was looking for podcasts, and kept clicking through related podcasts and checked this one out.  Some of the early episodes were really interesting to me, and I really enjoyed Tom's letters, so last spring-ish, I listened to all the episodes and eventually decided (over the summer) to listen to the APs.  Needless to say, I got pretty addicted.  So I listened mostly and finally got on top of things and signed up for the forums this past December, though I wish I had gotten on it sooner.

Anyway, that's my story.

I was minding my own business in the communal TA office on Missouri State's campus late one night when suddenly some guy hit me the in back of the head with a blackjack. On waking, I found myself bound and gagged in the back of a 1978 Pinto with a bad exhaust. I was driven to what I thought was a warehouse for SKG Studios, but what really was the basement of some guy's parents house, and forced to roll dice for 14 hours straight. At the end of 14 hours, the gag was finally removed and I was able to actually participate in the game, which I had become interested in. The psychologist would later call this a bizarre form of Stockholm Syndrome. Since then, I've been attracted to ill-smelling, ill-lit rooms where people make up character to play games. All the time, somewhere a voice in my deep subconscious is saying, "Please kill me..."

I got the idea of doing an actual-play for the system I'm writing and started looking for RPG podcasts to see what other people were doing. I found Paul of Cthulhu's "Horror on the Orient Express", and from the Yog-Sothoth forums I found RPGPodcasts.com. I went through every single AP podcast on there and RPPR was one of a handful of AP podcasts that not only had a high enough recording quality to be listenable but also had a cast that I didn't want to strangle.

After I listened to the D&D podcast put out by Wizards of the Coast all the way through their available episodes I started looking for other podcasts. Basically I just Googled "rpg podcasts" and I found a rather crappy one I don't remember the name of. After a few more links RPPR popped up. The most recent episode then was one of the october ones. I listened to it, thought it was awesome, and started listening to the shows from the beginning.

Back then I worked in records all day so I could just throw on my headphones and listen at my desk which meant I listened to about four episodes of RPPR a day. When I got into the twenties I started mixing the new ones with ones I'd already heard, especially the Bad Player.

I didn't notice the forums for sometime and back then they where a pretty ugly affair. When I got to an episode where Ross mentioned donations I decided to throw a few bucks into the pot and, seeing how I love attention, I registered with the forums so if they mentioned my name on the show it would have something to be connected to.

And I've basically been hanging around ever since.

Basically. It's also why I try to worm my way into anything that might possibly be mentioned on the show. I get all excited when internet personalities say my screen name. The doctors say that will pass now that they have me on some new pills but the nurse always forgets to check under my tongue so the joke's on them really.

RPPR is one of the first podcasts I ever listened to.  After I got my Zune, I was finally like "what is this podcast thing I hear so much about?"  So I looked through the Zune Marketplace for RPG podcasts and this one seemed to be one of the few worth its salt.  I actually started listening to some of the big-name ones well after I discovered RPPR.  Its just consistently a good show and the actual plays are some of the most listenable on the internet.

I signed up for the forums after Ross started doing his "forum highlights" segment.  Some of the discussions sounded like things I actually cared to give input on (which is rare for me).

After I heard that I had a fan club on here, I decided to start posting regularly.

You all should feel blessed because this is the only forum I actually post in.

Just to let you know, I feel blessed to have such a great group of people to discuss stupid shit with. I've always loved how friendly everyone is and I appreciate the love spread to our little gaming group.

There.

I'm off to go clean my pussy now.

I had never really thought much about podcasts until I finally got around to listening to the demo-podcasts that had auto-downloaded onto my Zune. I found one of them to be pretty humorous and decided to actually take a look at the available podcasts in the marketplace. The first one I downloaded was a Japanese language tutorial, then I just kept browsing the categories until I found one that had an amusing logo... enter RPPR. Eventually, I sent you guys an email (which you eventually read in the New Year episode). It was actually quite a while after sending that before I decided to register to the forums.

Started listening to the Penny-Arcade actual play podcast, and that got me looking for RPG podcasts in general.   After wading through several that ranged from interesting, but misguided (imo); to nearly unbearable, I found RPPR, and loved it.

I was innocently playing a game of Monsters and Other Childish Things at DragonCon last year, when the GM handed me a business card for RPPR.  Now I know that the GM of the game was THE Ross Payton of RPPR.  The game he ran was so wholesome and fun ( even with the teen-aged drug crazed potty mouthed Juggalos ), that I knew I had found a source of clean family entertainment.  So, I started listening to some episodes and and it was like a light went on.  I learned a whole new colorful vocabulary and way of thinking that I shared with my friends.  Well, I guess they used to be my friends.  They were a bunch of uptight fucksticks anyway.  Having a lot more fun now!

Yes, Ross is that nerdy. Technically I think they are index sized show cards with the katana-trenchcoat-dragon and the exploding barrel on them. But it's been awhile since I looked at one.

There's a word for this sort of thing, and that word is "money." For those of you who don't know what I mean, go see Swingers immediately.

I found RPPR because I was laid off last summer and I needed something to do to fill the voluminous amounts of free time I suddenly had. Mostly, I was trying to find something to listen to that interested me, and when I searched the iTunes store for roleplaying podcasts, RPPR was one of the first entries to pop up. I decided to give it a shot and liked it, so much so that I think I must've listened to the show's entire 30 episode archive within a month of the time I first tuned in. I joined the forum because it seemed like a good place to meet and converse with like-minded people: namely, nerds who enjoy talking about roleplaying games, and other awesome stuff.

So far, it hasn't let me down.

Just to let you know, I feel blessed to have such a great group of people to discuss stupid shit with. I've always loved how friendly everyone is and I appreciate the love spread to our little gaming group.

There.

I'm off to go clean my pussy now.

I did print out some RPPR postcards. I pass them out at cons. It cost like 50 bucks to print 1000 and I still have a few hundred left. The art is the RPPR group picture I used for the AP podcast logo and you can see it in the back of the new world primer.

While watching a cartoonist on ustream, the side chatter of the viiewers fell to D&D podcasts, and one of the people recommended the RPPR actual plays to me. However, I devoured the radio shows aswell (in a non-literal way), and that was that.

I forget why I joined the forums, probably to say something related to important matters of the day. Gotta be.

I too found RPPR through searching the Zune gaming podcasts. I really think the logo was what did it for me.

Cody really really really fucking hates Anakin in the new world campaign

You should kill him Cody, or does your player like him?
: Re: How did you find RPPR?
: rayner23 February 24, 2010, 10:59:46 PM
My character is indifferent to him. I should kill him, but we needed him to be an apprentice somewhere. It was all part of some plan that I don't remember any longer, but I'm sure that killing him would be a bad idea.

Still, I do risk his life needlessly later.

I like this idea. Cody can take him under his wing and the Cult gets a new mascot. We'll put him in pit number 3 and feed him by dumping in fish heads and hose water. Every week we'll throw in a Palladium book. When he reads it instead of tearing it apart with his teeth his transformation will be complete, and we will use him to terrorize the local villages.

Not to re-rail the thread, but I found RPPR when I was looking for some actual play podcasts after listening to the PA/PVP DnD podcasts.  I listened to some of the New World episodes before I realized there non-actual play episodes too. Then I went and listened to all of the back episodes.

BTW, haven't really posted much here, I'm Jason from the nerdbound group.

I had been tasked with actually running a game by my group since I had never run a serious campaign and everyone else was sick of running them.  I started looking through I-tunes and your's was one of the first I listened to....and I stole your New World game and have been running my players in it ever since.

I found RPPR through my DROID, which is way cooler and works nearly a well as all those dam I-crap's.

Started listening to the New world AP's and sent Ross a email asking questions about his GM'ing.  Later Google was kind enough to tell me he was online and we chatted for a bit, and then he told me about the forums.  After being viciously raped I mean welcomed for my introduction post I am beginning to enjoy this place :*)

It found me, but I didn't know I was lost.

It said it was watching me wander, adrift without a good role-playing podcast.

It let me search on my own, trying to give me my independence, to let me find my own way.

It saw my pain, and couldn't let me suffer any longer.

And so it found me.

And being found I know the joys of Cthulhu, of Mutants & Masterminds, and I have been shown a New World.

RPPR found me.

And I am less lonely for its company.

I thought everyone knew RPPR was scary?

Not scary in the way a dark basement is, but more like that creepy person across the street who watches you is.

You know it's there, you just can't know its intentions... and that makes you constantly look over your shoulder.

But maybe the creepy person is really just looking out for you.

But maybe not.

Right, how I found RPPR.
Like so many others, I was trolling around iTunes, thinking about my old gaming groups, and I wondered if anyone was publishing actual play recordings.  I found "A Night on Owlshead Mountain."  At the time, I'd never heard of Delta Green.  I remember thinking stuff like, "Wow, those alien critters sound a lot like Mi-Go."  Yeah, so.  I started listening regularly around the time "Dig to Victory" was posted, and as I've said before, I liked it so much that I sent ASG a slobbery fanboy email.  (He even replied, without the slightest indication that he'd sought a restraining order against me.)
Anyhow.  I lurk on the forums here a whole lot.  I've started a lot of posts, but I delete about sixty percent before I actually post them.

Stop trolling iTunes Dawnsteel, you're pissing them off. :P

I found RPPR on rpgpodcasts.com around episode 7 I think. I once had the crazy idea that an actual play would be fun to listen to. Having bad experiences from lousy podcasting, it took me a month before I got the courage to listen to "A Night on Owlshead Mountain." It turned out to be enjoyable and even thrilling at times. A lot of actual plays out there suck for the most part though.

looking on itunes now - the rppr actual play reviews are pretty funny - "ADD MORE PROFANITY. ALSO, ROSS KILL ALL THE PLAYERS"

seems like Critical Hit is the most popular AP podcast out there based on the number of reviews it has - seems like it came out of an existing comic book podcast so it piggy backed on that success. Has anyone listened to them? What are they like?

It's not even original immaturity. He stole that line from Dennis Hopper's character in Blue Velvet.

I do have to disagree with the sentiment, though. I think the podcast contains just the right amount of profanity, and I think that Ross should let the characters live. I'm quite fond of the Water Barons, especially Tom's lawful good Dragonborn.

Chalk me up as another person that stumbled here thanks to iTunes.  I recently got back into playing RPGs after a long hiatus, found a couple of good actual play podcasts, and this is one of them.  That reminds me...I have been remiss in leaving a review/rating of the podcast.

I came for the live play recordings (keeps me from going insane at work, mostly), and have found that I like the discussion episodes as well.

I'm from Kansas, near Wichita. It's quiet. peaceful, and you can actually see the stars at night... on the other hand its full of old people and boring as fuck. Still, its nice to get away from a big ass place like Columbus every now and then, all the imbred cats on my uncles farm creep me out though...

Hutchinson, about an hour north of Wichita. I go back every now and then to visit my family. Some of my best childhood memories are sitting on my grandmas porch watching the trains, damned Southern Pacific ran less then 2 house lengths from her house, with Santa Fe and couple of blocks from that... I also remember the time I nailed a horse fly the size of silver dollar with an aluminum baseball bat, haven't seen a smear that big since.

Just because when I look at all that stuff it just reminds me that I'll probably never get to go into space, let alone see another star... Ah, damn star trek. :'(

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here, but I figured I'd share how I found RPPR because I think it's a pretty funny story.

About six months ago our gaming group were playing our AD&D 2nd edition campaign and they were just after defeating some baddie that allowed me to roll on those good old treasure tables in the DMs guide. So I make the rolls and get "The Weird Stuff" table. Having fond memories of the Deck of Many Things from my gaming sessions in the 90s I thought that this could be interesting...

I continue the roll and get Apparatus of Kwalish. I said outloud "WTF is that?" which piqued my players interest in what I had rolled. Oddly enough I didn't have any experience with this item in the old days. I googled Apparatus of Kwalish to find out what it is and came across Episode 27 Grand Theft Apparatus of Kwalish.

A few days later,  I was traveling to Europe I figured i'd give the podcast a listin while working my way through airports and flights. Since then I have listined to all the available podcasts on itunes.

As a sidenote the druid in my play group is still dragging around the "Magic Barrell" he found and he still has no idea what it is or does.

I started listening to the APs back in September I think.  I'd listed to the Penny Arcade DnD podcast and thought they were great.  That's what got me into DnD.  Then on the PA forums I found a couple PbP of Call of Cthulhu that were interesting enough to read.  They were doing The Haunting, which I didn't realize at the time was a published adventure.  I remembered at that point that I liked listening to AP podcasts, so I googled The Haunting AP and found RPPR through that.

Yup, my first RPPR AP was Aaron's epic The Haunting game.  It was so hilarious (Scientologist brothers, Pancake Jamboree, Cody) that I had to listen to more.  I devoured all the CoC shortly thereafter, then New World, Eclipse Phase, and now I'm on New Arcadia.  When I get caught up on those I have no idea what I'll do in the time between Ross postings.

I have two other podcasts to thank for introducing me to this one, I started listening to the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast a couple of years ago, eventually it came up on one of there shows about the guys at Unspeakable and so I hopped on over there and that  introduced me to Ross and shortly after RPPR.

And then drunk and the ugly after listening to the Monsters and other Childish Things episode of the main show.

I received an Ipod Nano from my wife for my Birthday in January. I'd been listening to the Iheart Radio on my phone (talk radio or comedy) while at work until some $&#@& elsewhere in the building password-protected the previously open wi-fi hotspot I'd been using. So my wife gave me an Ipod. I still couldn't stream the comedy channels I'd been listening to, and I got tired of talk radio, so I started searching iTunes for interesting podcasts.

First I stumbled across an actual play podcast I no longer remember the name of. Something to do with "Nerds". It was mildly amusing, but it was D&D. So I searched for superhero gaming podcasts and found the Wild Talents podcasts. Score! They were fun (and funny), and introduced me to Wild Talents to boot. I started working my way through the Wild Talents podcasts, then added Eclipse Phase, and other games. Alas, I'm all caught up on Wild Talents and Eclipse Phase is over for now. I'm currently working my way through the "best of" lists Ross posted. (I gotta say, Lady Gaga 2.0 was hysterical.)

And now I've gone and bought several Wild Talents and Eclipse Phase game books. Darn RPPR!

I haven't actually played Wild Talents or Eclipse Phase yet, but I love reading about the Eclipse Phase game/background. I do intend to play Wild Talents because...I'm a Champions player. I know Tom's opinion of the system, and he has a point. I've been playing it off and on since the first edition waaaaaaaay back when, and even I would never try to play (much less run) the game without character design software. The game scratches an itch for playing superheroes with a system that lets you do almost anything (for enough point) that few other games do.

But Wild Talents may let me do the same without having to crunch numbers like an accountant.

Yeah, once you get used to the ORE system, WT is a breeze to run. Even Mutants and Masterminds is harder to run in my (limited) experience.

I have run both systems in long campaigns (over ten sessions each). Your statement is true.

That is exactly the same situation as me. Don't Rest Your Head was my gateway drug to this podcast. It's a shame you guys don't play it more.
