RPGs / Pagan Publishing back catalog
« on: March 01, 2016, 01:51:58 PM »
I am looking to obtain a copy of Pagan Publishing The Golden Dawn. There are a number of sources online to purchase it but thought I would see if anyone in RPPR forum land was willing to sell their copy. I am not trying to get a deal here so willing to pay market rate, currently there are 3 copies on the Amazon Marketplace for $90 for books in good condition so that is the price I am looking to pay. Will of course cover shipping and handling.

General Chaos / An offence to food - or is it?
« on: January 20, 2016, 08:20:13 PM »
I recently was gifted the Lucky Peach 101 Easy Asian Recipes cookbook. I am not a stranger to various forms of Asian cooking but this book is nice because it simplifies a number of things and tries to make things more accessible for cooks who don't have access to a good Chinese/Korean/Vietnamese/Thai grocery to track down more difficult to find items. It is proudly "non authentic" but the things I have made have largely been good although on a few things the compromises do show. I would recommend the book to anyone looking to dip their toe into Asian cooking or who has done a bunch of Asian cooking and wants a bit of a palate cleanser but I digress from the point of the topic.

One of the recipes is for something called a St. Paul sandwich which confusedly seems to actually be a St Louis and Missouri thing. Basically it is a egg foo yung patty on a sandwich with pickles and mayo and such. I think it actually looks like it would be really good but given a number of the RPPR crew live in the Show Me State I would wonder if they had experienced such a thing in the wild and if so was it actually worth making?

General Chaos / Edge of the Empire - Drunk and Ugly Life Day Special
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:27:01 PM »
It might be a bit uncool to point to a different actual play podcast from the forums of an actual play podcast but The Drunk and Ugly and RPPR seem to be on friendly turns so I am doing it. Most of the Drunk and Ugly APs are not to my taste (not through any fault of their own mind you, I think they do a good job) but I can recommend the entire run of their Star Wars Edge of the Empire actual plays groups under the title Fate Ascendant. It is currently in hiatus but for Christmas they dropped a "special life day episode" that was quite funny. If is worth a listen even if you don't listen to the rest of the episodes.

General Chaos / Origins vs GenCon
« on: January 04, 2016, 05:43:06 PM »
This may seem like a stupid question but I am considering going to Origins this year as opposed to GenCon. I went to GenCon in 2014 and had a lot of fun and have decided I want to do a convention this year but wonder if I should branch out and see something new. GenCon is its own crazy thing but honestly I felt at times like it was too large. I want to go again at some point but I think it would be interesting to go to a different event that still has a lot of folks and fun events to participate in but is not GenCon. My main focus is to play in RPGs although I do some table top gaming as well. I have zero interest in CCGs or miniatures games although I admit it was fun to walk through the halls at GenCon and see the different games I don't have any interest in just to see everyone playing them.

Anyone have thoughts on this or can speak to their own experiences at Origins? Alternatively I am not married to Origins so if anyone has other event recommendations in the US for a mid to large sized game events that take place in the later half of the year I would be interested in hearing about them and your experiences with them.

RPGs / Glass Cannon podcast
« on: July 28, 2015, 07:35:16 PM »
I just started listening to the Glass Cannon podcast and am on episode 4. So far I am enjoying it. Excellent sound quality (I think everyone has their own mic) and the table talk is pretty good with some digression but mostly on point. There is some sexual humor that verges towards the juvenile and/or possibly offensive at times so your own mileage may vary depending on the callousness of your heart.

They are playing the Giantslayer adventure path from Paizo. I am not a pathfinder guy but most of the first part have been an investigation so not deep into the multi hour combat yet. I expect if it gets there I am going to bail so we shall see.

General Chaos / H.P. Lovecraft File Festival in Portland Oregon
« on: January 29, 2015, 06:31:59 PM »
Given the festival is 9 months away this might be a bit premature but the 20th anniversary of the HP Lovecraft Film fest in Portland is this October. I have been going off and on for 12 years and it has always been a good time. I saw some great movies and some terrible movies and some movies that were terrible but great. In the last few years they have expanded the non film track and I was able to attend a few seminars with Ken Hite and Sandy Peterson so it is just not strictly movies. Plenty of panels and art shows and side events. Plus you get to check out Portland and witness the epic sea of beards and hipsters and bearded hipsters that is this city. Plenty of good places to eat and drink as well for those looking to do something other than consume massive quantities of movies and seminars and beard watch.

The guest of honor this year is Charles Stross. I expect the lineup to swell with plenty of great guests and events as we close in on the event.

They have done a kickstarter the last few years and if attending I highly recommend doing that so you don't have to wait in the line to get your ticket opening night. It is not gencon levels of crazy but it also not a walk in the park.

RPGs / Scenario Help - Delta Green
« on: August 06, 2013, 06:26:41 PM »
I wanted to put together a scenario that was heavy on the investigation as well as focus on the horrific elements being drive less by the entities beyond time and space and more by the terrible things people do it they are able to justify their actions.

The core hook is the agents are brought into the situation to investigate a series of murders. The victims are all killed by a high power rifle in places a high power rifle could not reach. One is killed in a restroom and the other is a judge who is killed in their windowless chambers. No entry hole can be found in any external walls. There is not enough gunpowder residues in the room to lead someone to think a gun was even fired in the small space. The first victim is a civilian but as noted the second victim is a judge who is on the fast track for promotion to a local circuit court and possibly beyond. At this point the agents get brought in (maybe by a friendly – that part is a bit TBD) to try and figure out what is going on.

So what is happening is a radical group has captured either a cultist or maybe a ghoul (special guest appearance by Grumvald) and is torturing them to open gates which they then shoot through. I understand this is not how gates work in the book but for the sake of the scenario they have this ability. There are some constraints (it takes a while to setup and are very specific so generally the shoots are worked out to only occur in a location the targets are known to be often, as in the toilet of a private home or the chair in the judge’s chambers).
So what is my issue? It is around the motivation of the radical group. I had original thought to use a somewhat standard right wing/militia type group but come up with a good back story. They were taking people they considered anthem to the cause and such but that sort of seemed quite trite and done and just too easy of a trope.

Then I thought maybe I would turn it on its head and make it a left wing group, in my case a two women who were minor but important players to the pro-choice movement in the 70-80s that had become radicalized and were arranging these killings of pro-life targets. I had a number of elements worked out that I sort of liked then it just started to feel way to contrived and over built.

I want to have scenario where the investigators need to work backwards from the victims who unlike many scenarios are actually connected. They then would find some killings that occurred but had not surfaced as connections but are very similar MOs and those would lead them to the main group since those killings are more personal. Eventually they would raid the ‘compound’ or what not and find the captured thing making the portals (who could be playing his/hers/its own game) and try to wrap everything up. In the meantime the killings continue and start to be more ‘important’ people and so of course more agencies get involved. Hard to run an illegal conspiracy with all these people watching you.

Basically I am looking for a plausible villain. Again someone or some small set of someone’s who are human and driven by their own righteous ideas. I like the idea of the people once being noble but eventually getting worn down and compromising till they get to the point they feel this is their only way to enact change.

Any ideas?

General Chaos / Beers to watch for while I am in MO
« on: June 11, 2013, 03:35:26 PM »
Given the RPPR crews location I thought I might ask a touristy question and of course others on the board please feel free to pipe up.

I am going to be in Kansas City (really Overland Park which is sort of suburban hell but what are you going to do) on some business next week and wondering about beer options in MO and KS. Been a few times last year and I have had beers from Boulevard that I have liked (think it was single wide IPA and the Pils and at least one beer from their smokestack series) but looking for any other breweries I should keep my eyes open for?

I tend to like to drink local when I can and having inside information when making choices is always useful.

Apologize if this was already covered in a previous thread.
