: Artemis Spaceship simulator - nerdier than Dwarf Fortress
: clockworkjoe October 28, 2010, 10:14:05 PM
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/10/27/take-it-to-the-bridge-artemis-spaceship-sim/#more-42652

Atermis: Spaceship Bridge Simulator isn’t officially Star Trek related, but it’s undeniably about the Kirk/Picard/the boring ones fantasy. And also the Sulu/Chekov/Spock et al fantasy. It’s game which involves networking several PCs, sitting in the same room and boldly going. What Star Trek Online should have been, albeit on a micro-scale.

One PC runs the grunt work by itself, posting the overview onto a shared main screen, while players take to their own PCs to don the mantles of Helm, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control. The terminals bark panicky electronic damage noises and make cool phaser sound effects. It’s a DIY Enterprise in everything but name.

And the Captain? He just sits in the middle shouting stuff. No PC, no actual technical ability: just barking orders and crazy plans. Y’know, “Warp Factor 2″, “Not-Klingons on the starboard bow” – that kind of thing. This is exactly as it should be.

I am simultaneously repulsed and drawn in, thus explaining why I have not been moved in any way.

Itd could probably be even nerdier if they made an iPad app for it with the LCARS interface.

YES. The first step towards making the fleet simulations in Ender's Game a reality.
Except, you know, for all the real people that died while they were 'playing'.

One step at a time, Salkovich.

One step at a time.

Ross, if you give me weapons control, I'll bring the ingredients for my sonic screwdriver myself!

Ross.

I DEMAND that we play this the next time i'm in town.

You can be the captain. I just want to be an engineer and or science office and spout random treknobabble.

...

Is there any possible way we can get them all in old Star Trek costumes?

OH JESUS CHRIST. We have a Star Trek LARP.  It's official.

I've seen about half of them in the day light. Stick to audio.

I think Cody would look good in a captains hat.

I just tried the demo of this with two friends using Tunngle (http://www.tunngle.net/ (http://www.tunngle.net/)) to connect over the internet, it's a little hard to play that way but since we used a VoIP service to communicate it wasn't too bad. Shouting at all your friends to launch torpedos, engage warp speed and dock to stations is amazing.

Rezzing cuz I feel the nerdiness of dwarf fortress has been challenged.

Yes, but you need friends as nerdy as you.

Just to let you know since I now have a working projector, it is the intention of the RPPR crew to try a session of this game. On alcohol. Copious amounts of alcohol.

I really can't express how psyched I am for this idea, but the real questions have yet to be answered...

Who will take up each position?

...and more importantly...

WHAT WILL OUR COSTUMES LOOK LIKE?!

The roles we need to fill are: Helm, Communication, Engineering, Weapon Control, and Captain.

Okay RPPR fans, it's time to pick your dream teams! Screw reality and availability, put your favorite RPPR cast members into the ideal positions.

Play to Win Team-
Helm: Bill, for his careful placement of objects and effects as witnessed in D&D.
Communication: Ross, due to his experience with communications media.
Engineering: Dan, for his knowledge of little details.
Weapon Control: Tom, due to his blood thirst tempered with moderation.
Captain: Patrick, because he has the best screwed of plan potential.

Play to Be Awesome Team-
Helm: Arje, who loves to be ordered around.
Communication: Cody, for his brillant negotiation abilities.
Engineering: Jason, who I know will want to try something different.
Weapon Control: Mike, for his unparralled restraint.
Captain: Aaron, because I want to see this.

Play to Amaze-
Helm: Cody.
Communication: Cody.
Engineering: Cody.
Weapon Control: Cody.
Captain: Cody.

I want to put Caleb in here somewhere but I honestly don't know what you'd be best at man. Your frosty in the clutch but your no combat ace.
: Re: Artemis Spaceship simulator - nerdier than Dwarf Fortress
: Kroack July 05, 2011, 08:49:28 PM
I'm a fan of Play to Amaze.

Also, besides NW stuff, has their been a lacking of Cody in other APs?

i want to overdose on a drug called cody

Who's AJ?
: Re: Artemis Spaceship simulator - nerdier than Dwarf Fortress
: Dawnsteel July 05, 2011, 11:01:24 PM
Captain: Ross as King Sea-Moss
Helm: Aaron as the Professor
Communications: Caleb as Otis the mechanic
Engineering: Cody as MaOCT nerd-voice
Weapons Control: Tom as Revenant
: Re: Artemis Spaceship simulator - nerdier than Dwarf Fortress
: Joven July 05, 2011, 11:03:08 PM

You beat me to it. Fixed above.
: Re: Artemis Spaceship simulator - nerdier than Dwarf Fortress
: Shallazar July 06, 2011, 11:47:52 AM
Captain: Ross - Even though he loathes command structure, he always takes charge.
Helm: Caleb - To drive you off the rails of a crazy train.
Communications: Tom - Choice words.
Engineering: Jason - because he is super effective
Weapons Control: Aaron - so he'll bring the ingredients of the Sonic Screwdriver.

Edit:
OR! Draw out of a hat!

: Arje July 07, 2011, 10:30:50 AM
If you set a day, in advance of at least 2 weeks. I will fucking be there. (Also not the weekend of Harry Potter. You see I manage a movie theatre these days, so i don't exist that weekend)

And I need control of the deflector dish for best technobabble.
: Re: Artemis Spaceship simulator - nerdier than Dwarf Fortress

Captain: Ross
First Office: Caleb
Engineer: Me
Weapons officer: Cody (what does this button do)

Not sure if this means I screw the most plans or I do the most with screwed up plans.

I listened to that Paragon god game and the Survival City Fear Itself game. I think both are true.

I listened to that Paragon god game and the Survival City Fear Itself game. I think both are true.

Then you would have loved some of my other highlights:

One-shot Hunter game: Trucker driver turns hero only to fall for a Ross red herring and get eaten by a zombie.

One-shot AFMBE game: Anarchist refugee leads a revolt against the government contractors running the refugee camp...only to be eaten by a zombie.

IH campaign: character gives away his soul for safe passage through a cave system to save a city from certain destruction from an invading army only to cause a revolt in the city.

Masks campaign: hitman turned hero negotiates a major arms deal and builds an army to destroy Nyarlathotep only to become the only character that doesn't make it through the temporal gate and gets stuck 60 years in the future.

DG one shot: FBI agent turned mythos monster slaughter crits everything until Jason shoots him in the back turns on Jason only to critically fail a shotgun roll using dragonfire rounds. Hilarity ensues.
