: I Drawed D&D Characturs
: mathey July 13, 2010, 06:04:12 PM
After a long drought I'm trying to get back in the habit of drawing and painting and so on, so I chose as a subject for the next week or two the characters in my D&D campaign. I'm working with fancy Prismacolor colored pencils at the moment, which is a bit of a change since I usually do black and white ink stuff. While I'm familiar with the wonders of programs like Photoshop, the truth is I prefer more tactile processes, at least for the initial work.

So. In a desperate bid for the approval of strangers, I'm going to try and post what I come up with here and over on my RPG.net Actual Play thread. Feedback is welcome, but bear in mind my self-esteem is brittle to the point of being girly.

First up, my initial attempt at a party portrait. If the characters look unfocused and moody, its because they're deep and thoughtful because that's just the kind of DM I am:

I went back and tried to up the contrast and detail in this version:

This stranger approves. As is often the case, I like the dwarf best.

Do you play in the game or GM it?

I too, liked them.

Thanks!

I'm GMing. We only manage to get together about once every two months, but we've managed to keep it going for 25 sessions thus far.

4 years is pretty damn impressive. Still playing the same campaign through all that time?

Well, its more like 2 years (getting together more often than once bimonthly a couple of times - mainly before two of my players had one of them baby things), but - yeah, we've been playing around as long as 4th Edition has been out. Its strange for me, personally, because I was traditionally one of those short attention span GMs who switched settings and systems on his players about every three or five games. Our idea of a long running campaign was anything that lasted 10 sessions.

One downside of the infrequency + length equation is that I have to refresh my players' memories about a fairly ridiculous amount of narrative info each session. Last session, for instance, one of my players was convinced the party had an airship. I have no fucking idea where he got that from.

How meny of your players have you killed?

I haven't killed my players. I have tried to kill their characters a few times, but without success. The closest we got were assorted "one more death save or you bite it" situations. The fact we have two leaders (Cleric and Warlord) in a 4 person party may have helped them not corpse - but the Fighter sure ends up using a TON of Healing Surges.

This is Afaras, Far-Reaching Pain, Emissary of Graz'zt. He's a villain.

This is a group portrait of the Gilded Lions, the army unit the PCs belonged to before things went to Hell:

My only issue is with the Emissary of Graz'zt - he should probably have six fingers. It's that creepy little detail that distinguishes the conniving demon lord and its followers.
: Re: I Drawed D&D Characturs
: mathey July 20, 2010, 03:09:29 PM
I tried squeezing in a sixth digit in there, but as I already had some issues with making the hand look right it didn't work out.

Maybe his sixth finger is on the back of his hand! Yeah! And its invisible!

Here's General Clerk, commander of Aurum's military - the Dick Cheney of my setting. I used Alan Dale as my photo reference.

I really like your drawings, the colours of them feel really strongly D&D fantasy. Would you take a request? I can't offer you anything other than my undying love.

I concur with the dogfish.

Your art has a feel to it which is excellent. EXCELLENT! (aside: I'm doing a lot of yelling)

Kudos.

Thanks!

I can try taking a request, but be aware that without substantial renumeration, I may put an Elmer Fudd head on your character.

Well I am the GM with a small party of three characters. They're quite an odd bunch so I've always wanted to see them immortalised in some way. A kobold monk with a quaterstaff, a tengu rogue and a half-elf wizard.

That's a pretty awesome party. Give me a week or two? I'm in a shitty mood right now, but I should be able to get something together.

Thank you very much, take all the time you want. I think I may stick some things in the anecdote thread about them. Kinahto here plays the Tengu.

Indeed I am!  Just so you know, it is VERY important that my Tengu have an Elven Curve Blade, (Think katana, sort of) I've gone to great efforts to piss off the DM with that thing. ;D

It is also incredibly even more important that the wizard wears a pilgrim's hat.  In fact, make him look like he's attending some kind of Thanksgiving costume party.

Oh, and of course, thank you for offering to draw our party.  It's not every day you get a sketch of your character from a really good artist, after all.  :)

It only took me 3 weeks, but I got around to doing a doodle for you, Dogfish.

Note: The half-elf can be holding a rainbow or balls of fire or lightning arcs. Or just saying "what up?".

That's incredible, thank you so much. Our mage is a fan of flaming sphere but I think it looks great as is.

edit: Going to start using this for their token portraits on Maptools. They're all really grateful.

It's awesome but... why did you have to make the wizard so much taller than me?  He'll never let me live this down. :p

Seriously though, it's absolutely great.  Thank you so much for drawing this.

I've finally worked up the courage to request this, since my sister has been super busy with classes (she goes to the Art Institute of SF) she hasn't been able to draw any requests from me.

My buddies and I have reopened our first campaign and I thought I would ask you in your infinite talent to draw my party as well. We are doing this in the Rokugon 3.x setting that is why I put in their nationalities.

A Human Paladin of Heironious(European)
A Half Black Dragon Human Bard /w a Cello (European)
An Elven Cleric of Heironious
A Human Drunken Master(European)
A Human Samurai (Asian, Robes not Armor)
A Female Human Shaman (Asian)
A Vanaran Rogue (4 1/2 foot tall monkey-man)

If your not in the mood I understand but consider this my humble request as I am so impressed with your above work I figured I would throw it out there.

Sir, this is clearly impossible in the Science that is Fantasy Races. Reptiles and mammals can't make woodwind-playing babies.

... Well, an African Dragonborn can, but not a European Dragonborn, that's all I'm saying.

While this character is pretty impossible. A cello is not a woodwind instrument. It's like a really really big violin.

Somehow more than anything else in this conversation, I lol'd at this.

No seriously my wife just asked me what the hell is so funny.

I tired to explain, but she doesn't understand gaming in the slightest.

I sure do appreciate it, and take your time, believe me I'm just happy to hear your considering it. How close to your degree are you?

My sister is working on her art degree she only has like 1 more semester to go, granted she has been working on it on an off since 2005, but I am proud of her for finishing.

Congrats on sticking through college, something I'll have to try someday.

EDIT: One important thing I forgot to mention is that the Samurai, is the wears robes, not armor, anime variety.(he would kill me if i forgot to mention that)

Hello. This is mathey. You know, from two months ago? I had a bit of a hacking issue with an email account and credit card, so I've gone and made a new account with "2" after my username. I also should tell you I've not gotten around to doing the drawing I promised here on this thread. I've got another art project on the burner just now, but I wanted to check in and at least let you know I've not abandoned the forum.
