: Good anime series?
: rayner23 April 26, 2009, 05:55:01 PM
My wife and I were talking and we realized that there are very few anime series that we have actually sat all the way through and enjoyed. I was wondering if there were any suggestions for good series. Here are my top 5 favorites:

1) Cowboy Bebop
2) Wolf's Rain
3) Berserk
4) Samurai Champloo
5) Gundam Wing

I've seen parts of Trigun and I didn't like it.

I've watched enough DBZ to never want to watch it again.

I refuse to watch Inuyasha and Naruto.

I watched the first episode of Last Exile and I was very interested in it, but I wasn't sure if it was worth my time.

Thanks for the help!

Cowboy Bebop is up there for me. I will allways love my Robotech, older series are just that older, but still good, it ages pretty well, the newer seires are very well done graphic wise. Samurai Champloo was good too, I enjoyed Trigun, I enjoyed Full Metal Alchemst Mostly becuse its so fucked up half the time. I would recomend Outlaw Star, and if you dont mind older graphics robotech.

Bio Booster Armor Guyver, old and new animation series.

My personal joys have tended away from shonen recently and into mixed-breed, high school based shows.

School Rumble is amazingly good.

DearS is excellent and one of the few series I've seen with a really nice dub job.

I am loath to plug anything "popular" but Death Note really is quite good.

Oh god.
You just tell me what kinds of things you find interesting and I can recommend enough anime/manga to occupy yourself with for years.  I've sadly started a list of all the anime and manga I've watched and it's 12+ pages long typed in I think 9 pt font no spacing.  So it's about... 750 total, and it's out of date.  It's a collection of anime and manga where in order for it to even make the list I must have either watched 4 episodes or read 1 volume in order to get an accurate idea as to how the quality, story, etc will go.

I have never watched any of these anime except DBZ and I just watched the whole series a few weeks ago. But I'm not sure if I can get my self to watch any but if I should what shows are good and that I caan get free from the internet?

Outlaw Star is pretty good. Gantz is great if for no other reason than it would make a great RP scenario. I really enjoyed Ranma 1/2 when I was younger, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it now. I cant afford the two hundred sticker price for the box set.

I don't know I'm searching around for a good anime myself.
: Re: Good anime series?

Gantz was good, just make sure you remember it can fall into the "fucked up shit" category sometimes. Alot of the time. Freaky ass show.

Guyver fits in there sometimes too. Being a true blue child of the eighties it's as "edgy" as all fuck. Lots and lots of blood, slicing, language, and weird themes, especially in what could be called the second half of the series.

Agreed. Although the ending for the animated series was awful.

Sadly only the beginning of Desert Punk is worth it.  Once you hit the episode where he takes off his helmet it all goes downhill.

I found Grenadier surprisingly interesting for what it is.

I loved Gantz as a comic, but haven't watched many of the episodes. The few I watched were pretty faithful to the series though.
: Re: Good anime series?
: dragonshaos April 27, 2009, 05:07:29 PM
The thing about Gantz is that it's only really interesting while they are fighting.  When they are out in the real world doing their thing, it's actually really boring and uninteresting.  It's only when Gantz summons them to fight do things get interesting.

The manga is still ongoing, it's recently been licensed by Dark Horse and Vol. 3 is out.  The anime is complete with 26 episodes.  The anime itself is alright, some scenes are a ittle too long and it you think about it the people are retarded when it comes to fighting.  it also ends abruptly after the fourth Gantz mission.  In the manga, that mission is extended and opens up new story elements which have yet to even be touched again.

It's good for the violence, the T&A, the gore, and did I already say violence?

Some of my favorites that i would suggest are:

Please Teach
Outlaw Star
Chobits
Rurouni Kenshin
Samurai 7
Genshiken
Gunslinger Girl

: Re: Good anime series?
: Maze April 27, 2009, 08:05:07 PM
Chobits? Really?? I personally thought the story would go somewhere when I don't feel it ever did. It kinda boiled down to "You can have her but you can't fuck her."

The guy will get tired after a year but she'll always be looming around killing any girlfriend he has.

Meh it was an enjoyable story and i had read the manga when i was about 13 so it had some good memories attached to it.
Of course i am a sap for the romantic comedy when it comes to anime.
: Re: Good anime series?
: Tadanori Oyama April 27, 2009, 08:59:13 PM
I read Chobits, it just always felt a little weird. Really the secondary character made the series for me. I mean, they actually developed and changed. Not my favorite ever.

DearS was better. Like Chobits, but with way more boobs and laughs.
: Re: Good anime series?
: Maze April 27, 2009, 09:07:50 PM
I guess you could say the same of "Love Hina" the whole romance angle is downright retarded but damn if it wasn't awesome to see a guy get punched through a wall and fly off in the air.

Then again, some things you liked as a teenager when revisited turn out to be utter shit.

Anyone knows Fist of the North Star?
: Re: Good anime series?
: Tadanori Oyama April 27, 2009, 09:53:09 PM
New and old. I spent alot of time considering what I'd do if I know where someone's "Head Explodes in a Bloody Mess" button was.

On that same note: JoJo's Bizzare Adventures. Za Worldu!

DEATH BY SOFT STRIKES!

didnt they have a video game in the arcades about that, where you taped the punching pads in order to kill the guys with your soft strikes?
: Re: Good anime series?

It was a sweet arcade game where you punched the hell out of pads.

Exactly what I was coming to. Such an awesome arcade game at the time.

Even though I don't like alot of anime, two exceptional pieces come to mind-

For psychological horror, 'Perfect Blue'

For a strange mash of the horribly cute and horribly bloody with a cup of absurdity mixed in- "Beat to death Angel Dokuro-Chan"

Yeah, I gave everybody the outline of that one sometime back. Funny show.

Besides what has been mentioned, movie wise I'd say Paprika and series wise Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
: Re: Good anime series?
: Tom Church May 13, 2009, 08:38:32 PM
Guyver and Hellsing are about the only series I can tolerate without vomiting enough bile to dissolve a small truck.

I also like a series I saw called Ghost Stories, mainly because it had a ball-blastingly funny American dub.

Do you prefer the new or the old Guyver series, Tom?

Hard to decide.  They both contain things I like.  I need to watch them again.  Been a while.

I would like to second Paprika and recommend a series by Satoshi Kon, Paranoia Agent.

Both are good anime.  Also check out something no one probably knows of, 'Gon'  http://tinyurl.com/q24an7

I'm probably gonna get askew looks for this but:

I like Saint Seiya (please, not Knights of the Zodiac, but Saint Seiya).  You'll probably have to get a version in Japanese with English sub.  The subbing is usually a little bad for the earlier eps, but the more recent ones - like the Hades episodes are ok.

Also, Hades Project Zeorymer is okay for giant mech action.

If martial arts and gore are your thing, The Fist of the North Star is pretty ok.

Also, I found Karas interesting.

Whoever suggested Guyver is wrong. This series sucks dick.

It is so bad because it combines the "political intrigue" (basically, one character who is morally gray) of Gundam Wing with fight scenes that feature characters who are the most powerful thing anyone has ever seen until the next episode ala DBZ.

Though some of the fight scenes are kinda cool, this series is just missing something.

Paranoia Agent is amazing... until the writer went insane, now I'm permanently cross-eyed. Also just for Cody, I think you should watch Golden Boy.

Step up to my face a say that!

But yeah, alot of it does suck. Which series did you see, cus there's like three. The oldest one is horrible by any modern reviewing standards. I enjoy the rework they made in the early 2000s. I think there's been something else since them too.

I recomend Planetes if you like realistic scifi. Its got all the crunchy science of 2001, without all the mind numbing boring. Lots of drama and psycology though, but I hate drama and I still enjoyed it. Then again, I watched 2001 to the finish, book is better.

So I was a fan of Gundam all through high school (actually had all three of the movie hey made of the original series before I even heard Gundam Wing as coming to Cartoon Network, so I have street cred, yo). I've recently been thinking I'd like to see what they've done since Wing was made and to check out some of the new series.

My favorite stuff was everything in continuity with the original series, or those series fitting in the Universal Century timeline. I liked the continuity as well as the more militaristic, less superhero kind of stuff. My favorite Gundam series is the 08TH MS Team miniseries.

All that being said, what would come recommended as far as the recent Gundam series go? I understand that there's something called "SEED" and then the most recent series was just called "00 Gundam" and the latter is what I'm interested in from what I've read. 00 Gundam is available on Netflix so I was going to try it out that way. Anyone seen these and could give an opinion on if I'd like them before I queue (sp?) them up?

Also, anyone see the remake of Evangelion? I guess the DVD's are supposed to be released this fall for the first movie, so that's pretty cool. If anyone wants to recommend anything else based off the fact that I like giant robots with heavier themes, I'm all ears.
: Re: Good anime series?

I'm not sure if they were mentioned already but RahXephon and Berserk are two pretty good serieseseses.
: Re: Good anime series?

I would recommend Record of Lodoss War for anyone in the mood for a high fantasy anime, just please for the love of all things anime do not listen to the dub. Its beyond dated in the quality of the voice acting, going with the old mantra of anyone hanging around the office can make a good voice actor.

The other series I recommend are Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Hunter X Hunter and Great Teacher Onizuka.

It's mostly loved for its nostalgia factor and large amounts of blood.  There were also a couple of shitty American-made movies made back in the day (of which I have both and love even though they are utter crap).
