Ross and I were discussing this before he left for Mexico last week and I forgot to put it up as a question for the forum. When we typically hold ransoms for supplements, we add incentives like pre-release APs and so on. For the next supplement that is in the works, Ross and I were discussing producing a series of short fiction that would accompany the release as an incentive.
We were also kicking around the idea of doing other types of ransoms, so ransoming short fiction based in the New World or other RPPR specific game worlds or even other types of short fiction (like longer versions of the dystopian micro fiction I was writing for a bit).
So I'm posting the question to the boards as a form of preliminary inquiry. We all know you love your APs as incentives, but what else would you like to see as incentives for future ransoms or ransomable content?
-
Additional original works. The old skits where quite good. Law and Orcdom is truly exceptional and I still listen to the AB3 dramatizations every so often (okay so the AB3 stuff isn't 'original' but whatever).
Short fiction is a great idea, especially if its based off of RPPR staples like the New World Setting. I'd be especially interested in light drama readings of New World material or of audio book style readings because I have plenty of books but only so much worth listening to.
-
I don't think a short fiction based on the New World would carry the same energy as an AP. Don't get me wrong, the story is interesting in itself, but it's more the interaction between the players that makes it totally awesome.
As for what I do want for content, I'm less certain. Maybe a footnote somewhere in the book as a contributor?
-
Good short fiction would be interesting based on the New World. Maybe you could have forum people submit stories and pick one or a few of the best to be including with the supplements.

We agree with this. It wouldn't be an either/or thing but rather a "what other content could we use as incentives." So for X-amount you could get some short fiction, but for X-amount you could get short fiction + unreleased APs, etc.
-
I know it is probably a lot of work for Ross, but I think the Skype games are a good idea. Short fiction would be interesting, but I don't think I would be that compelled to donate fore it (i.e. would view it more as a "bonus" on top of the other incentives), but that could just be me. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head that would interest me personally, but as far as random ideas go I had two more. I don't know if gaming conventions are at all like E3 as far as swag goes, but if you pick up a lot of that you could potentially kick some of that back (but then again that might have legal implications as far as "selling" it). Or, and this one is kind of really out there, I know Mike and Jerry from Penny Arcade auctioned the dice they used in recording the DnD podcasts, so you could do dice or something (granted you don't carry the same weight as the two of them, but as far as in the "RPPR community" it may work)...
So yeah, weird stuff I know, but it might trigger and idea for someone...

Tom's dice have been pissed on by Aaron's cat. Does that make them worth more or less?
-
$100 - you get the dice
$200 - Tom must use the dice forever
-
They would be worth a lot more if they had been passed by Aaron's cat. Kopi dice anyone? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak)
Sorry, I guess I should try and contribute a little more than a smartass comment. I like the ransom model a lot and participate in a number of them. Some end up as just a preorder, and that is fine. Others release the product freely after the ransom and offer some "unusual" incentives for varying levels of contribution ( I got a bunch of cupcakes for backing a local music album ). Greg Stolze's recent ones have been a random gaming book from his library, prints from woodcuts related to the project. Of course here we get advanced access to APs and other things. I think my favorite benny has been the DG Skype game ( but I haven't gotten the cupcakes yet ;) ). I have been happy with all of them. I don't back a project for extras unless it is just a pre-order, but I will raise my level of contribution depending on the extras.
Another way to approach the contribution levels is the way Open Design does it. You are given forum access to the design process. You get to vote for things. For different levels of contribution, you could be playtesting or even doing monster or encounter design. I think having a "contributor" forum for design questions/comments would work great here.

That's almost as bad as elephant cured durian (http://www.chat11.com/Elephants_Used_To_Ripen_Durian_Fruit). Want to know how to make durian more foul tasting? Cure it with an elephant.
-
I thought Durian was actually pretty good, but just had the foulest and most powerful smell ever (prompting things like "NO DURIAN" signs).
Also, fastest derail ever.

It's my thread, I'll derail it if I want.
WHAT IF WE OFFERED DURIAN FRUIT CHEWS AS AN INCENTIVE?!?
Better?

YES. FREE DURIAN CANDY WITH EVERY CONTRIBUTION TO RPPR. CONTACT YOUR LOCAL ASIA FOR DETAILS. (http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/308826466/Durian_Candy.html)
-
If I didn't have to place a 50 carton minimum I would so do it. But I really don't need 2000 packages of durian candy.
-
According to Brad Jones (the cinema snob) the candies taste quite pleasent.

what

Please state your confusion in the form of a durian.

Oh, that's a point :(
Being in the UK, any physical incentives seem to go against donating since they would consume some of the donation to post. So for example the DVD option in Aaron's one seemed interesting, and I donated enough for it, but didn't actually go for that reward option.
So any downloadable incentives like the actual plays, sneak previews, art or assocated fiction are always a cooler option to me. Not sure what my tipping point would be for donating a little more just to include fiction though. The benefit of the actual plays is that I tend to listen to them at work, out and about, and on journies, so they get repeated listenings. Any other goodies are less likely for me to increase a donation to acquire.

I'm somewhat disappointed that you guys still do not offer tote bags. You are Role-Playing PUBLIC RADIO, after all.

I disagree. Years ago I bought a pencil bag with a zipper. It's the most function dice bag I've owned. I put the dice I need (plus an extra set) and a bunch of pencils in it. I do this because NONE OF THE RPPR CAST EVER BRINGS THEIR OWN WRITING UTENSILS!!! /rant
-
When I'm a player I keep my dice inside my clipboard. It's got a compartment to store things so I fill it with folders, paper, character sheet, pencils, and dice.
GMing I have some felt dice bags I bought at a game store.
-
shure microphone bags are where its at for dice bags
also i also bring pens and shit when i game

Pencil bags look like shit; a Crown Royal bag means you have class.
-
from now on i'm only going to keep my dice in a laphroaig quarter-cask

Fuck, isn't that always the way? I've got 5 players in my current CoC game, and between them they somehow manage to forget to bring 8 pencils a game. As in, that's how many I seem to need so everyone can have a pencil. It's like they brought Nega-Pencils.
-
When I started hosting games, I went out and bought a back to school pencil box. It had 50 cheap mechanical pencils in a clear plasitc case, which I just left in the gaming area. That was about two years ago and I currently have 5, maybe 6, of those pencils left.
Where did the rest go? Who knows. I think that players secrete a chemical that dissolves pencils.
-
My pencils continue to vanish, yet I somehow acquire more pens and markers. And I purchased three of those ten-packs of pencils.

I've got a crap load of pens. Maybe pencils enter a hibernation state and later emerge as pens.

Sweet, my read list just doubled.
On that note, what the hell was this topic supposed to be about? We were making insane demands of Ross, right?
Survive style survival horror. We dedicate any cash we donate to the site to one of the crew members and whoever comes in last gets destoryed during the next round of play. Whoever gets the most get a survial token they can use to escape Ross's evil traps.
How about requesting systems? If somebody donates enough money they can request a specific game, module, or pre-made adventure of the RPPR crew to suffer through.

No no no, you have to offer something in exchange. It's a fey bargain; remember Ross has been known to steal away people names.

Rise up!

Can't we just, like... ask him nicely or something? I would rather save my revolutionating for the inevitable rise of the working class. Or something.
-
it will be posted first as a bonus AP for the next ransom

Ross doesn't respond to human kindness. At GenCon, the day after our big meet up of RRPR fans, I saw him in the exhibition room. He said "hey", and kept walking. The man has ice in his veins. Ice made from other ice that was melted and then refrozen. Zombie ice.

I'm the nice one. There needs to be one personable guy, and one icy robot.

You are bafflingly nice, Tom. You were by far the nicest deadly assassin in that game we played.

Yes, your taser. God knows that saved the day. I'd bank on those martials arts tricks man: death by soft kicks.

Didn't I break the taser with the my sword cane, or was it the weapon that Jason had at the time?
-
Reading this thread reminds me why I love the RPPR community so much...
-
Yes, it was all fun and games until you broke my taser.

Sounds like a situation that merits "Yakety Sax" playing in the background as it unfolds.

He tried to parry your blade with the taser. It worked... once.
