A quick poll. Do you drink while gaming? I have the tendency to avoid it if I am GMing, but even then I usually have a couple of beers throughout the night. If I'm not GMing, I tend to have a few more (but I also eat more too I guess). Alcohol has led to some hilarious lines over the years for the groups I've gamed with. "Fuck your idea check. I poke it with a stick!" is probably still my fav :D
Cheers!

Me and basically everybody I play with on a regular basis follow the Tom's drinking rules. The ones I know who might drink I play with only in our local gaming store so no alcoholic beverages allowed.
Skype games on the other hand... well, it's just say I've gamed with some of the folks from the Nerdbound forums, if you know what I mean.
-
I am embarrassed to say I am unfamiliar with Tom's drinking rules. Is that from a particular post or RPPR episode? (I couldn't track anything down with the search bar).
-
It's mentioned in at least one game (the Wushu League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, '88, IIRC) that Tom doesn't drink.
I and most of my gaming friends follow a similar rule. In my experience, the few who didn't follow such rules usually took it too far and ended up falling asleep or getting too agitated or confrontational. I get the feeling this poll will be wide and varied in its results! :D

We drink a little bit, saki and whiskey tend to be the two recuring drinks. Its fairly causal, like what you'd do when shooting the breeze. When I GM try somehow figure out senarios where my players/characters have to drink grog.
The best drinking situation we ever had was during the New World Game I ran. The players were the colonial ambassadors at this big summer native festival, Dark Ravens, Grey Fangs, Grippili, Foundamentalist Bahamut worshipping Kobolds, Druid Minators..the works. At anyrate the Bard and the warlock had to tell stories of 'great heroes' from the old world to impress the locals..ie they had re-tell an adventure of a character they played in a previous game. It was a skill challange so they had to do all sorts of checks but they also had to keep shooting saki until they were done. So they end up with like 8 shots apiece and then its time for the Warforge to do his bit. He sees me putting away the saki and is like "Where's mine?" and I turn to him and say "Warforges don't need food or drink "Mr I save so much money because I don't have to get an inn or eat.'" His face fell and the rest of us damn near busted a gut laughing.

+1
I actually posted this same poll on a couple of other forums and got quite a variety. I always assume most gamers don't drink, but that may be my nerd stereotyping coming through from when I used to work at a comic shop.

Yeah, I don't drink and none of my gaming group do beyond very infrequently. Beyond this base, the fact that all of us are pretty thrifty/cheap and that we usually game in the afternoon really drives the likelihood to drink way down. Plus I think we're starting to think of crazy enough things sober that we don't really need to...

margaritas.
-
woodchuck ale is pretty good too

2 parts limeade, 1 part Sailor Jerry and spoon of brown sugar for thrills. Fantastic.
Or three fingers of Markers Mark.

This, right here. Whiskey goes down slowly, and it + coffee helps me concentrate.

coffee on top of it?? yucka.

Gin and Tonics. ;D

Gin and Tonics. ;D
Yeah we usually have some brewskis but lately it's Gin and Tonics- we were in Kenya after all. You can hear us drinking beer all over the podcast, but it never causes any problems.
We grill out, have beers and roll dice its a nice ritual we got going.

Well not mixed in with it, but a really nice french-pressed mug of coffee to go along with a glass of Maker's? Oh yeah.

Yeah . . . if you're a woman.
Stella Artois is the champagne of beers, but for my money, I think Guinness is the way to go when it comes to gaming and drinking. I don't know that I've ever enjoyed Guinness as much as I do while gaming.
-
Also, I like when margaritas are around during gaming because I like when RJ yells "TIP IT!" in reference to getting margarita slushy from the mixer. My wife and I reference this line all the time.
-
Mmm Guinness used to by poison till i killed the taste. Nowadays I will sit back at the game table crack open the mead / rum / whiskey. I don't drink when GMing however that could end in disaster. i also find that when running say like a session where there at a banquet ill open up the mead and start handing it out amongst the players.
-

Coffee is hot garbage. No reason to pour hot garbage into your stomach after its been blessed with Marker's Mark.
-
For many reasons of a personal nature I do not drink, and most of the people I play with do not drink while gaming (though if we're at one guy's apartment, he'll have a few glasses of wine, another's he'll have at least one Corona).
One of our players was a bit too heavy of a drinker, but he's a douchebag for many other reasons and thankfully isn't our problem anymore.
The final game of the huge Call of Cthulhu scenario I ran had one person drinking, and that is the major reason I no longer allow my players to drink while I run. I tend to make sure no one drinks themselves into a coma at parties, but while running the game I lost track of individuals beyond the game. She went through an entire bottle of vodka on her own on an empty stomach, managed to derail the game for nearly an hour, insulted and alienated most of her friends, and actually drank herself into the point where she had a severe medical problem and should have been brought to the hospital.
With that in mind, I no longer allow my players to drink when I run. They can do whatever they like when someone else is in charge, but I don't need to be worrying about that when I'm already trying to herd cats through an adventure.
-
I usually knock back a brew or two at game-time. Helps me relax 'n get into character a bit easier. Guinness is a classic, but I've also really been taken with Founder's 'Dirty Bastard', which is an amazing Scotch Ale. Great stuff.
Alternatively, some B&B on cold nights works great.

Yup. I've consumed that during some RPPR games.

Gotta say, Stella Artois (aka Stellar Act-a-twat) is a very popular drink with the Football(soccer) culture over here and well you can imagine how it got that name.
For me its, Jack, Jim, Jerry or Morgan for spirits and Tiger beer for well beer.

People accentually drink Stella? Why it has no real taste whatsoever. At least drink Fosters that has a real taste to it.
-
I mostly drink local beers because the breweries in WI totally own. I also have 3 friends that brew their own stuff.
Beer hipster cred aside... there are a few mainstr- nah, no, actually I pretty much stopped drinking any of the mainstream beers. I'm a total beer snob now. But I do enjoy Guinness every now and then. It's just that there are better stout beers to be had that are local. IPAs and Stouts are my poison.
-
I would more often if i always didn't have to drive afterwards
-
Beer and whatever alcohol we have handy. Usually tequila or Vodka.
-
last table included some PBR, Molson, guiness, Gin, JD, Wizard, strongbow, limes, tonic water. and a wee bit of sake
As the temperature increased from 33* up to 45* then we'll break out the margaritas and Kampari. Mabye some some rare imported Irish green brews.
There will be a backyard BBQ with sangria, hamburgs, Old fashioneds, hot-totties, Irish cream into coffee and dribble in some Kahlua.
I feel like one solid drink will sate my thirsts. All things in moderationl. Especially when dranks in game demand the drink of one out of game.
ANOTHer rule of the ever toast, a growing and buckling cup till they all recure more toast.
I never knew my mother, she died in birth.

Pabst, huh? So, what's gaming with hipsters like? Do they suggest you bring out the old Random Harlot Table (thanks, Gygax) so they can game ironically? 8D
Edit: Do they also hold Svirfneblin up as their favorite race, 'cuz they're still underground?
-
Ran a game yesterday with rampant pre birthday drinking. apart from a few points the game went off without a hitch. Well except for my new players distracting themselves with smart phones ... should ban those from my table.
-
how can you guys stand this hobby sober? i have a house rule that everyone has to be so drunk they mistake dice for pretzels

Whoa. Why are you assuming that these hipsters would even play D&D to begin with? It's way too popular. True hipsters play games like Everyone Is John (http://wso.williams.edu/~msulliva/campaigns/john/index.html)! Crap. I just posted that on a forum. Now they have to find something else to play.
