General Chaos / Re: What Vidja games are you playing?
« on: June 18, 2013, 06:51:06 PM »
I am liking The Last of Us but it is very much on rails. The main issue I have is that I wish it was a bit more of a stealth game but you end up murdering so many dudes. They do a good job of keeping you right on the edge of running out of supplies (although that might be because I am a terrible shot in these games). Similar to Uncharted the game experience is more akin to watching a movie then playing a game although instead of doing a Indiana Jones-ish game as Uncharted is this is closer to the Walking Dead.

There is not a lot of new things to the story (the 'zombie agent is fungal based' which is sort of newish and the Clickers are interesting) but they do manage to pull most things off well. Some horrific elements that are well done but most of the really nasty stuff is people being nasty to people.

It is also pretty and the sound design is good.

I would not say it was fantastic (the last really fantastic game I personally played was Red Dead Redemption) but solid and well done.

A promotional graphic for a film festival in Portland and LA. You get a short stack of pancakes with each admission.

Editors commentary (and of course by this I mean on the busting the authors balls comments - I don't want to see that you semicoloned when you should have coloned) would have made an interesting kickstarter backer level reward or overall stretch reward.

It depends a bit on the nature of the game. If we were planning on play a more investigation/horror themed scenario I think I go with one of the following:

Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote (who as the nations most prolific serial killer could also fit into a high body count game).
Dr. R Quincy from Quincy ME
Carl Kolchak from The Night Stalker

it's all feast or famine :D

My understanding was that it was all famine or less famine.

General Chaos / Re: Beers to watch for while I am in MO

Thanks for the pointers. I will keep my eyes out for both Mothers and Schlafly. Sadly my nights are pretty locked down so no chance to escape to downtown but maybe in a future trip I will be able to make the trip.

My honest opinion of Boulevard was they are in that space where they are big enough to no longer be a craft brewery and their line is filled with a lot of beers not taking any chances. You see that a lot with breweries that have enjoyed enough success to get pretty big but they often are not doing the most interesting beer from a region even if their beer is ubiquitous in the region.

Their IPA I enjoyed and their Pils was unoffensive and drinkable but not much else going on. I will totally drink their beers again and I am know they will be fine to good with out being fantastic.

IPAs are in general a category I enjoy although at least on the left coast we have been in the middle of a hops arms race for a number of years which has taken it out of control. I like hops flavor (really like fresh hopped beers) and also enjoy bitterness but plenty of brewers seem to want to make drinking an IPA the new version of Rosambo. This has taken some of the joy out of IPA drinking for me.

Thanks again for the advice and if anyone makes it out to Portland or Seattle I will certainly return the favor.

General Chaos / Beers to watch for while I am in MO

Given the RPPR crews location I thought I might ask a touristy question and of course others on the board please feel free to pipe up.

I am going to be in Kansas City (really Overland Park which is sort of suburban hell but what are you going to do) on some business next week and wondering about beer options in MO and KS. Been a few times last year and I have had beers from Boulevard that I have liked (think it was single wide IPA and the Pils and at least one beer from their smokestack series) but looking for any other breweries I should keep my eyes open for?

I tend to like to drink local when I can and having inside information when making choices is always useful.

Apologize if this was already covered in a previous thread.

Ran a Call of Cthulhu game about making a movie with mythos creatures and sorcery :D

I hope we get a scene with an Agent trying to get the crawling chaos to sign a three picture deal.

I don't have anything better to put there right now and it gives new listeners an idea of what we cover here. If I can find a better wordpress widget to put there, I will.

Perhaps large format vanity photos of the RPPR crew! Tom and Ross in action. Recording Podcasts .... and rolling dice .... uhm .... Or maybe just pictures of Thad.

Over all seems like a clean design.

My only very slight objection is your placement of the tag cloud. Seems to be a fair bit of back and forth on this topic in various places but anecdotally (which of course the entire internet is fueled on a single data point observations) I have never really used them. With that in mind I feel you are using up a lot of prime real estate (especially on a tablet) for something I will always skip over but yours and other users of the site mileages may vary.

I am personally not much of a Dr Who fan (the current series annoys me to no end) but though people might get a kick out of this. 30k for a 1 foot square box into space seems a bit low honestly so buyer beware.

There is a post under there somewhere

I sort of don't like myself for liking Hannibal but I do like it. Maybe I can find a support group or something.
