: GenCon 2013 & The 4th RPPR Fan Meet-Up
: Tadanori Oyama January 04, 2013, 07:44:32 PM
Hey guys, it's time to bring up GenCon again! Badge registration and hotel reservation is coming up at the end of the month (the 27th and 29th respectively). If you want one of the close by hotels make sure you get online and do your reservations fairly earily that day because they tend to go pretty quick. You'll need your badge code to get into the GenCon Housing Block and get the discounted hotel rate too.

For those wanting to run their own games, early event registration is Janurary 11th through Feburary 8th. You'll want to get your events in during that gap if possible since people who do that get better spots (in general) and are guaranteed to be given time and a space in the book (not a sure thing if you throw in later).

Secondly, we need to consider what to do with the RPPR Fan Meet-Up. For those who made it last year, you probably remember it was a bit of a mess. We had way more people than we'd had previously, so many we had to change locations. Farthermore, it wasn't possible to handle such a huge group in one game easily.

So, I suggest for this year we plan a tournament. If we have Base Raiders, we use that. We do two or three groups of players with Ross running one and volunteers running the others. The last standing and/or winner (depending on if we do deathmatches or goal based events) moves onto the final round, run by Ross, to determin the true champion.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Internet bile?

As this will be my first Gencon I have no suggestions.

I haven't seen any action on this thread. Is a meetup still in the works?

I'm probably going to be there this year. As it is only my second time, I don't know where would be large enough to accommodate everyone. I have no schedule either, so fuck if I know for times.

As far as games to play, I say everyone brings a case of cheap beer and we play DrunkQuest until only one is left standing. I may be alone in advocating for that though  :)

Are you talking about DrinkingQuest? I just looked it up and it sounds like the mightiest fusion of bro and gamer. Alternatively, it's a beer & pretzels game that emphasizes the beer. That said, I'm probably in.

There's always the legendary drunkass party.

Check it out on the gencon events.

If we continue to scale up like we have than I'm guessing we'll have about twelve people at the meet up which is way more than a single normal table top game can accommodate. So Caleb's idea might have some merit.

The only real 'staff' at RPPR is Ross so it really falls on what he wants to do.

We, as the fans, could always self organize. That would actually be more in line with other media forms: organize an event which the stars attend (or don't). With RPPR it's always been the other way around with Ross setting the time, location, and event. However I don't think there are yet enough of us to make that leap from a small group event to a large event. Eventually it would be cool to turn the thing into a celebration of the podcast and the crew as a group.

Thursday nights have gone well. I believe that would avoid all of the stuff with ArcDream's events. Meeting at the Embassy Suites is something of a tradition but our group is getting a little big for that. We had a lot of luck finding mostly empty halls at the Hyatt, plenty of space there but we can't pre-plan it, we just have to find an empty one.

How about meeting at the bar in the Hyatt? It's small (easy to find each other) and the Hyatt itself is directly connected to the convention hall through the parking facility (instead of across a street or through a series of tunnels like Embassy). Once we've got everyone we can go upstairs and find an open room.

Would anyone object to use carrying around cases of Busch? Cuz DrunkQuest requires, like, A LOT of beer.

I can bring the cards if we do that. Hopefully the expansion (90 Proof Seas) will be done by then.

I can bring beer but I don't drink myself (and there's always Tom...). Does the game need a sober ref or anything?

Also, we might have to find another location: I'm sure the Hyatt and the other places with bars (or worse, without bars) have some sort of rule about alcohol consumption, especially outside alcohol.

: AmishNinja June 19, 2013, 11:27:56 AM
Busch?! Son, I'm from Wisconsin. If this thing is going to happen, then I'm going to make sure we use actual decent beer.
: Re: GenCon 2013 & The 4th RPPR Fan Meet-Up
: Cthuluzord June 19, 2013, 12:25:14 PM
Well, we don't have to drink. That's just the only game that I have that can accommodate 12 people and still be fun. And I'll drink anything.

So if we're going high class, Stag?

When I drink cheap beer I am more of an Rainier man myself.

I am pro imbibing and can go low brow or high brow. Sadly I would also assume that the various convention spaces are going to frown on BYOB so it might be a non starter although we can certainly try. In the public/gaming spaces I think they are going to quickly cut off on 12 people pounding tall boys and shouting (I assume their will be shouting). Maybe GenCon is different than I think but I have to believe a giant horde of drunk gamers roaming the halls is on the top 5 nightmare scenarios for any one in hospitality. I would normally say we should find a local brewpub but I fear any place is going to be swarmed with convention geeks all wanting tables for 10+ people so that seems like a long shot.

As a side bar not sure if anyone has a deep knowledge of Indianapolis but looking for recommendations for restaurants and watering holes? My wife will be coming with me so I am going to need to take her out to a nice dinner and be a good husband each night so I then be a terrible husband during the day and play some games and generally ignore her. I have heard good things about two places, Libertine and Black Market, but any other options are welcome.

How about something tournament style? We could do randomly created Dirty World games using the random generator, count people off by number lottery, and have the "winner" advance to a championship round and have a winner.

Or do something round robin so that everyone has a chance to meet each other?

Since I'm not running any official games this year, I'd be happy to run a couple of games during the meetup (or after hours during the evenings).  I have two COC scenarios I've recently written and I'd be happy to run my last MAOCT scenarios for anybody who was unable to play them last year.

I'm up for anything gaming/event wise. I'm mostly curious about when this will take place. I have a lot of events scheduled but I may be ok with skipping out on a registered event or two depending.

We've generally done the meet up at 5 or 6pm on Thursday depending on Ross's schedule with ArcDream or panels.

You are not alone.  However I'll need to start with something stronger than cheap beer to start.  Maybe something classier, like Moonwine (Port + Moonshine)

We're getting closer in; only 1 month until the Con so if someone who has Ross's ear or his face because bring his attention to this so we can get an "official" ruling that'd be good.

As I see it we have two proposed startings:

1) Meet at the Embassy Suites bar (which we have done every year previously)

2) Meet at the Hyatt Hotel bar (which I am proposing we adopt this year)

As for an activity or event to follow there's a whole thread of them.

Also this concept of moonwine is intriguing to me and I wish to subscriber to your newsletter.

Probably the Hyatt. It has the most space for gaming and an easily stumbled to bar.

For a change this year, let's do it Friday. I will be going to a meeting with the Posthuman Studios people (as well Caleb I imagine) and I don't know when it will be over but Friday night is open with me.
: Re: GenCon 2013 & The 4th RPPR Fan Meet-Up

Friday would be hard for me; I have a game to run for ArcDream at 7pm. I planned around Thursday being the meet up and have games Friday and Saturday.

I can show up for the first bit if it's around 5pm and wander back later if anyone is still around.

Well, what about Saturday?
: Re: GenCon 2013 & The 4th RPPR Fan Meet-Up
: Tadanori Oyama July 15, 2013, 05:57:26 PM
Unfortunitally I have a set of games at the same times on Friday and Saturday: 10am and 7pm.

I'd assumed we'd meet on Thursday like previously so I left Thursday entirely open.

I don't think it's going to be a big problem. Friday will be the first run through of it. I'll just shorten it up a little. If the meet up starts at 5pm again than I can be there for the first hour and a half, slip out to run the game, and be back before Aaron's finished with his second Danny Devito.

Or set it later and I'll just be late to the party. Earlier and I can hang longer before going to the game.

My brother will be along this year and I can keep up on what's happening (like relocations) through him.

Any final decisions made with Gencon only two weeks away?

I'm not sure of my status mainly due to it being my first Gencon and I booked a lot of events. In other words I may have bought off more then I can chew. :)

Excellent.

A few clarifications if we could Ross: 1) At what time and 2) In what place?

As I said before Embassy is a nice big space and it's one of the harder places to find. The Hyatt is closer and has a large waiting area near the bar. It's where we did the crazy mall game in 2011.

In a related matter; I may have the chance to get a loaner of the quick-start rules for the upcoming World of Darkness game Demon: The Descent while at the convention, pending some discussion with Mr. Rich Thomas over at The Onyx Path Publishing.

Assuming I manage to get ahold of it, I'd like to offer to RPPR fans and crew the chance to be some of the first people in the world to enjoy Demon. I'm willing to run it after the meet-up (staying up late) or work out another afternoon/evening to play.

Let's meet at the Hyatt, because it has food and will be easier for everyone to find it. First floor - starting at 6 pm. We can meet, get some pizza, talk and then figure out what games to play. If enough people show up, we can try 'do you worship Cthulhu?' since that supports 12+ players or we can break into smaller groups for other games.

Sweet. I'll have enough time to meet anybody new, then run to my game, and be back before 10.

I can drop by for that. I have a break from 5-8 on Friday. At 8 I'm scheduled to play X-Wing at Fantasy Flight HQ but if I miss that I'm not overly concerned.

At 10 I have the Legendary Drunkass Party though. I can't miss that as tickets were $46 bucks and it includes food and drinks.

Marik

Also if anyone cares im going through major pains with regards to my badge and true dungeon tickets right now :(.

I am so bummed that I can't make Con this year. I guess I'll have to wait another year for my Monsters fix. Turned a Co-worker onto the AP podcast and he has become quite a fan, gave him the lowdown on the meet up. He may show for a bit.
Hope all goes well for you guys. Have fun, kick ass, and loose sanity.

So this just a weird sort of FYI. Um, I'm gonna have access to a smartphone at the Con but I lost all of my old contact numbers because the reason I'll have a new phone is I ran my old one through the washer, destroying it and my SIM card. So, if I've met any of you at GenCon previously I no longer have your phone number but mine is unchanged. So, I'll be hitting a few people up for their numbers again.

Argh. Well this year finds me strapped to the bellies of 61 rabbits so I will be unable to wriggle out from underneath them to perform my GenCon duties.

Everyone better have fun and stuff and if there are no super great anecdotes during the wrap-up episode then I will be all the more willing to strangle these babies to get to Gen Con 2014.

Sadly my gencon plans fell apart so I will be unable to make the pilgrimage and take in the wonders. To see the preserved remains of St Gygax. To kiss the ring of Adam Scott Glancy. To drink of the cheap and not so cheap beer surrounded by those who share my hobby and also hopefully share my high regard for personal hygiene.

For those who are going have fun for those of use who cannot and go out there and game, game like the wind!

I'm a little late to this thread as I have been super busy since I returned from the con.

I have to say though I had a great time and I will be back next year. I didn't make the meet up due some scheduling problems (along with other problems like leaving my event tickets home).

I did get the chance to meet Tadanori Oyama though. he was running his Oil in the Coffee game on the table next to a few of us playing Reign. I gotta say Tad that had to go over very well. Your table seemed to be having a blast laughing the whole game. It sounded great...

The con definitely helped me and our group who were just returning to roleplaying or just starting. I was looking at different settings and rules and was about to buy Better Angels when I came across Savage Worlds which several players had recommended to me. I was glancing through the book and a guy asked me if I had any questions and I asked a few which he answered. I thanked him and said I was going to pick it up. He responded "I appreciate that". It was only then that I realized I was talking to Shane Lacy Hennesy the author of the book. I also had the pleasure of meeting Steve Jackson, Ed Greenwood, and Kevin Siembieda. Anyways it was an awesome time.

I walked away with the following items if anyone cares :)

Pathfinder Core Rules
Pathfinder Reign of Winter Adventure Path 1: Snows of Summer
Shadows of Esteren Prologue signed by the artist and one of the designers
Savage Worlds Deluxe signed by Shane Lacy Hennesy
The Wizards Mask signed by Ed Greenwood
Rex Final Days of the Empire (Board Game)
New Dice!
