1. 16 (God, you're all so old)

2. Male

3. ???

4. If something were to personally impact my life negatively I'd fight it. Otherwise I could care less.

5. Yeah, people should be entitled to speak their minds and watch their porn in peace.

6. Uh. Don't torrent stuff or using copyrighted material is as far as my knowledge extends.

7. Word of mouth basically. From neighbors, family, and friends. I don't actually follow any news source.

8. RPPR, Youtube, Dwarf Fortress, Wikipedia, Google, and various other smaller websites.

9. I don't really spend much money online anyway.

10. Read an article. Videos get to caught up in making something presentable and ideas can be lost along the way.

11. No. They're monuments to self worship and stupidity.

12. Umm. Sometimes I go to the BBC website. But not regularly.

1.   What is your age?
Twenty-five.

2.   Are you male or female?
Male.

3.   Do you know what the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is?
Indeed I do.

4.   Would you be likely to donate time or money to protect civil liberties?
I don't really have much money at the moment, but if I did, I would certainly donate. I do have plenty of free time, so I would have no problem with volunteering.

5.   Are rights like freedom of speech and privacy on the Internet important to you?
Freedom of speech and freedom of privacy are important civil liberties no matter what the context. Because the internet has become such an enormous part of the social and economic fabric of everyday life, giving up these rights online would have the same effect as it would if we conceded them "IRL," as the kids say.

6.   How informed are you about legal issues regarding the Internet and computers?
I'm no expert, but I read the occasional article about technology and the law. I would say I've got a pretty good understanding for a layman.

7.   Where do you get your news from?
I read The New York Times primarily, but I also take a peek at CNN.com every once in a while. BoingBoing.net lets me stay in on stories that may have slipped by the mainstream media, although they usually accompany their reportage with a fair amount of commentary and personal opinion.

8.   What websites do you regularly visit, at least once a week?
Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, The New York Times, YouTube, Google, Wikipedia, several webcomics, and (of course) RPPR and its forums.

9.   Do you feel comfortable spending money online?
Mostly. I tend to do business online with bigger companies, like Amazon, or smaller companies that use PayPal.

10.   Would you prefer to read an article or watch a video to learn about something?
Either works just fine for me.

11.   Do you think websites like Facebook and Twitter are useful to learn about new things?
Absolutely, although it's pretty much impossible to go on the internets nowadays without seeing ads. The tubes are flooded with 'em.

12.   Do you pay attention to news sources that are outside the mainstream, such as foreign new services or independent documentary filmmakers?
I do, although I'd be hard-pressed to name more than a few of the aforementioned sources. I don't regularly turn to alternative sources for my news.

1.   What is your age?
26

2.   Are you male or female?
Male

3.   Do you know what the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is?
Nope

4.   Would you be likely to donate time or money to protect civil liberties?
Yes, if i had money i would.

5.   Are rights like freedom of speech and privacy on the Internet important to you?

Yes, very much so. Expression is paramount to development, without development we as a culture would stagnate. Privacy is also important, Expression is good but its better when properly directed.

6.   How informed are you about legal issues regarding the Internet and computers?

I have to admit my ignorance.

7.   Where do you get your news from?
Local Newspapers and MSN Website but only in passing. If there is a headline that catches my eye then i would browse over it for a few moments. Apart from that its mostly word of mouth.

8.   What websites do you regularly visit, at least once a week?
Break, Collegehumor, Numerous Webcomics, The Escapist, YouTube, Rppr Forums and many many more.

9.   Do you feel comfortable spending money online?
Yes, sometimes a little too comfortable as if it was too easy.

10.   Would you prefer to read an article or watch a video to learn about something?
Preferrably Read but sometimes I'm too busy so a video would suffice.

11.   Do you think websites like Facebook and Twitter are useful to learn about new things?

I guess they are but unfortunately the internet is a swamped market of adverts and its like trees and grass, they're there but you don't really look at them.

12.   Do you pay attention to news sources that are outside the mainstream, such as foreign new services or independent documentary filmmakers?

Yes, mostly independent documentary films on subjects i find personally interesting. So not many.

: Re: HELP ME DO MY HOMEWORK
: Flapjacks March 02, 2010, 11:07:02 PM
1.   What is your age?
27

2.   Are you male or female?
Male

3.   Do you know what the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is?
I've heard the name a few times and I understand the concept.

4.   Would you be likely to donate time or money to protect civil liberties?
If there was something I felt was specifically threatening my civil liberties, I'd put in time or money to fight it. Otherwise, no.

5.   Are rights like freedom of speech and privacy on the Internet important to you?
I consider them important, yes.

6.   How informed are you about legal issues regarding the Internet and computers?
Amateur level at best.

7.   Where do you get your news from?
I've been on a news hiatus since I got my cable turned off and I haven't been happier. However, what little news does reach me comes in the way of automated AP reports sent to my email by way of CNN.com and the New York Times website.

8.   What websites do you regularly visit, at least once a week?
YouTube, Amazon, 4chan

9.   Do you feel comfortable spending money online?
To a frightening degree, yes.

10. Would you prefer to read an article or watch a video to learn about something?
That depends on how each is presented; a bland article written in passive third person isn't going to hold my interest anymore than a similarly bad web video with powerpoint slides and a dullard reading from them stiffly. If, however, we operate under the assumption of all things being equal then I'd prefer the article because it'd be easier to reference when I want to bring it up on a forum, pass it to a friend, or email an excerpt with a link to it at the bottom. It's a lot less trouble than trying to make people commit to watching a full video just to make one or two salient points.

11. Do you think websites like Facebook and Twitter are useful to learn about new things?
I hardly use either (not trying to pretend I'm too cool for school, I have accounts on both) so I can't say how effective they are at teaching. Just looking at it on its face though, I would think networking sites would be better for spreading another medium between wide swaths of people (an article, a video, etc.) rather than being the place you try to reach them directly.

12. Do you pay attention to news sources that are outside the mainstream, such as foreign new services or independent documentary filmmakers?
When I watched BBC News, listened to their podcast, and read The Guardian online I realized that foreign news (atleast Western news) is almost indistinguishable with the exception that their human interest stories are marginally more interesting than the vapid Today Show garbage the American media go nuts over. As a film geek, I have a different perspective on the subject of documentary filmmaking. I've watched a shitload of them, and over the past four or five years they've all adopted the Michael Moore first-person narrative punchy editing style, which as an Errol Morris fan I hate with every fiber of my being.

EDIT: God damn it! I'll read the whole thread next time . . .

 24 years

Male

Hmmmm.... gmail and google reader is the way I get most of my content.

What a surprise. No females...

That actually does surprise me a little. According to the board stats our male to female ratio is 7.5:1, so there should be one girl for every eight guys. Out of 217 members we should have at least 25 females. Of course, how many of them actually post?

I want to answer anyway... I'm ok with being a meaningless statistic.

1.   What is your age?
35

2.   Are you male or female?
Dude.

3.   Do you know what the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is?
I just googled it, so yes.

4.   Would you be likely to donate time or money to protect civil liberties?
No.

5.   Are rights like freedom of speech and privacy on the Internet important to you?
Freedom of Speech is a Right - Privacy on the Internet is not. They are, in a way, exact opposites. I do feel that a certain level of privacy in email is needed. Freedom of Speech is important to me, privacy on the internet is not.

6.   How informed are you about legal issues regarding the Internet and computers?
8/10

7.   Where do you get your news from?
All over - Internet (sites, podcasts), print, television (local news, international, specific topic shows, documentaries)

8.   What websites do you regularly visit, at least once a week?
Too many to list but you can safely assume Yahoo, Google, RPPR (and a couple of other gaming ones - Wizards, Paizo etc.), iTrade, Wall Street Journal, NY Times, Globe & Mail.

9.   Do you feel comfortable spending money online?
Unfortunately yes. Very comfortable...

10.   Would you prefer to read an article or watch a video to learn about something?
Video if I had to choose and could only have one.

11.   Do you think websites like Facebook and Twitter are useful to learn about new things?
Nothing important... but technically 'new' I guess...

12.   Do you pay attention to news sources that are outside the mainstream, such as foreign new services or independent documentary filmmakers?
Yes. BBC, Al-Jazeera, etc. Trade magazines occasionally.
