I started with DnD 3.5 and have played a lot of 4 recently.  I probably would have to say Dungeons and Dragons just because it is so established and pretty solid.  However I really like the "theory" I guess of Call of Cthulhu, and listening to some of Ross's and others' games, I think that might come close to surplanting DnD if I had a group that was really into playing/running it...

I actually started when i picked up a copy of 'Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay' (Hogshead publishing) from the UK Games day 1997. So down to Nostalgia and a run of good campaigns it would have to be that.
But Dnd 4.0 and Call of Cthulhu are very close silver medals.

The original Bureau 13, but only because the bestiary included such gems as Animated Clothing and Undead Tree Weasels. *

And also, Chivalry and Sorcery has a great mechanic for actions. I first played it with an amazing GM, and my character was a knight, so the combination of awesome story and cleaving wizards in two with my chivalric great blow lead to fond memories of the system.

* scariest thing about an undead tree weasel is that nobody's ever seen a live tree weasel

Dread, the only RPG to use Jenga as a conflict resolution mechanic.  Most creative and fun game I've ever played.

I love 4e, but I have a very soft spot in my heart for Monsters and Other Childish Things.

: Tadanori Oyama March 04, 2010, 02:13:41 PM
Monsters and Other Childish Things is my favorite because it's awesome on it's own and I can use the engine to play any other game I want. For example, I'm currently setting up for a game based on White Knight Chronicles. I spent time reading through GURPS and Mutants and Masterminds for how to do a game which has people fighting in giant suits of armor when I realized that the Knights are basically Monsters. I can make them all individuals without having to invest hours into character creation.

Awesome system.

I have played D&D primarly, started with 2.0, also a bit of Shadowrun 2.0 and 4.0 (I think?)

Some stuff I would like to try is Paranoia, Toon, Mouseguard, Burning wheel, and I have been reading about Monsters and other childish things and would like to try that one as well.

White Knight Chronicles huh? You mean, "Not Final Fantasy XIII?"

It's far less than what I except from a Level 5 game. After Rogue Galaxy and Jean de Arc I had high expectations and White Knight did not met them. I enjoy the game (which doesn't say much if you know the kind of games I like) but it doesn't deliever like I thought it would.

But the concept is something I greatly enjoy and the places have fairly easy to remember names. And besides that no one else has played it so I can work without fear of insider trading.

I'm also considering using Monsters to run a CthulhuTech Mecha game. Batting around other stuff as well.

My wife really wanted to play WKC and I wanted to as well until the reviews came in. I just wanted a new RPG, so I am chomping at the bit until next Tuesday.

Has anyone played 'Heavy rain?'  I have heard some really interesting things about it, not sure it fits the RPG nitch, it might create its own?

It's not really an RPG so much as it is essentially DVD menus that movie. It's creative and cool, but not much.

I agree with the votes for Dread and Monsters and Other Childish Things.  They are both great games that I never get to play enough of.

Actually, I have never played Dread before, only ran it.  I think the greatest part of it is when the tower is really shaky and the normally well oiled team starts to try and figure out a way for someone else to make the fatal pull.  An incredible amount of suspense can be generated by the Jenga tower.

Fave to play would prob be 4E dnd. I started back in 2nd ed, but was too imature to get into it. 3/.5 is where I spent most of my playing and loved it, but 4E is the tope of the pile. My fave to listen to though is CoC, and I cant wait to play in one, Just need to get the right alignment of the planets to get 3 or more friends at the same time and place haha!

PHOENIX COMMAND

The game scale is 2 seconds a Phase, which is broken up into .5 second
impulses and 2 yards a hex or inch. Each character has a number of CA
or combat actions with which to act. and different actions take
different amounts of CA to do.  for instance run 1 hex is 1 action, to
open a door is 3. go from standing to prone 2 etc. an average person
has from 4 - 6 CA per 2 second. CA are also used for aiming.

There are a whole slab of modifiers to use when aiming; too numerous to
list here, but they cover just about any situation you may need.

anyway bullets do high or low penetration. ( PEN ) if the pen is less
than the armour ( PF ) then the bullet doesnt penatrate. if it's higher
but not double it does low PEN, and if its double high PEN. High pen
does all the killing. bullets also have a damage class ( DC ) Which is
basically how big a hole they tear through flesh. The bigger the DC the
deader you become.  Also if the PEN is low the bullet will always only
do DC 1. and the pen usually pretty low as well.

I've had a situation were a face plate of 4 PF has saved a character
from having his brains blown out by a .45  to just his jaw blown off.

in the basic book there are 39 different hit locations for a human,
from head glance to liver spine, heart lung, etc.  All the frag,
shotgun and auto fire rules use geometry to calculate how many bits hit
a target. basically of a 5 round burst is fired into a 2 yard hex then
there will be about 1 bullet every 40 cm. so as a persons chest is
around 30 - 40 cm wide then there is a % chance of being hit by one
bullet. if the 5 rounds were fired into a .5 yard area then there would
be an automatic hit or 2. This may change with range firing stance etc.

Grenade have a base concussion at different ranges that is taken as
straight damage. Thats basically the first book, PHEW!

then there is advanced rules, and PC expansion.

What? In a lot of ways, it could be considered more of an roleplaying game than all of those japanese catgirl-with-big-sword games.

RPG in video game has come to mean "Stats" and little else. Now games like Fallout and Mass Effect, you're actually playing a role as opposed to being along for the ride fighting one asshole after another until the boss. Not that the latter isn't fun.

Heavy rain, you're playing roles you could say.

Anyway, loved the first play through. Upon replaying, the railroading became apparent (for the first part at least.)

It reminds me of Japanese horror games like "Siren" and "Fatal Frame". Just not as interesting.

Jumping ahead a little, anyone keeping a watch on "Alan Wake"? Looks like it's developing along similiar lines. Pushing hard for the main story of the game and taking away the sandbox experience that was originally proposed.

The structure. It's not an actiony game, you wander around picking up pieces of the plot rather than solving puzzles or shooting things. Some of the interaction with items reminds me a lot of Siren.

I'm still gonna do the ORE version of the game but now it's out of fucking spite.

God, I'm still pissed when I think back to it. I can't think of any other game that has ever made me mad like this.
When do I get my lightning shooting powers?
