RPPR has a new friend, and it's name is Popgun Chaos!
http://www.popgunchaos.com
The website will be dedicated to essays on pop culture with a slight emphasis on comics and sequential art. So, if you want to discuss comics or any other pop culture things (movies, music, etc.) then be sure to stop by. I plan on adding content frequently and I can't wait to really get this thing going!
So, what can you do to get involved?
Easy!
I would like a banner other than the Captain America pic I have to put on the site and I would like to find an artist to draw something and put it up.
What kind of image?
I'm not 100% sure right now. I chose the name "Popgun Chaos" to encompass all of pop culture. I'd like something colorful, kitschy, and an image that gets the feel of pop culture in a single image. Obviously, specific superheroes and things would be out, but generic ones would be fine.
Let your imagination run wild.
Thanks for your time RPPR fans, and I hope you'll enjoy my site.

sequential art?

One thing I might suggest, especially if a lot your posts are gonna be as full as the Mask of the Phantasm essay, is maybe limit how much of the posts show on the main page to a couple paragraphs, with a "Continue Reading" or whatever link for the rest of it.
-
Most won't be as long as Phantasm, but I really appreciate the suggestion and I will be sure to fix it. Thanks!

Popgun Chaos reviews Batman: Under the Red Hood?!
FTW!
-
Also, a critique of Wonder Woman's new costume and the ridiculous reaction it received.
-
Phantasm truly is the citizen kane of animation, and I still consider it to be the greatest origin story for him to date. As for the new Wonder Woman costume, i don't care about the costume so much as the crappy story they have started in which they flat out admitted will be over with and probably forgotten in a year. The costume is ok, it would work Better for Donna Troy or Cassie, but it just looks far too teenager for Diana, but again it ties into the story which is my initial problem with it.
As for Red Hood, i hadn't read the original comic but i've liked every DTV so far, aside from the animation in Gotham Nights, so i knew i would like this, plus bonus Jonah Hex short!
All in all good reads there.
-
Awww . . . thanks!
-
I read through all your writings. I enjoyed your various essays cody.
-
Schucks . . . I appreciate it!
I've just posted my Power Rangers essay, but it's more than just Power Rangers! I talk about VR Troopers, Masked Rider, and other TV shows from that era! Go check it out and comment on your favorite Power Rangers moments!

I checked it out again today after only seeing it on the first day you posted here. I must say, getting a better feel what you will be writing about, I'm really interested now. Definitely going to keep reading...

Suggestions?

Really enjoyed the Brolosophy essay. That went in a different direction than I expected, and it was cool.

That is where you are very wrong, my friend. The 90's gave us many great things. Last Wednesday I talked about giant monster TV shows like Power Rangers and this week I'll be discussing arcade games, but they also gave us great music, great cartoons and some average family television.

I'm going to assume you are either in your early 20s and, thus, really missed the 90s or in your late 40s and, thus, completely misunderstood the 90s as you pined away for slap bracelets and tight rolled jeans.
Why would one miss the 90's? aside from a handful of good movies, they gave us nothing!

I think this is directed towards me. But I'm in my late 20's, and just generally hated most of the 90's The cartoons weren't as good as in the 80's, wasn't a fan of most of the music, and while my opinion on some of it has softened now, i still generally like all the other decades more, despite not even really being old enough at the time to appreciate it all. Maybe part of the reason is that my parents are so old and i grew up listening to almost nothing but the oldies.
As for video games, i only had an atari, a fairchild, gameboy, but thankfully also a super nintendo which i was only lucky enough to get because clover was going out of business and the N64 had just came out. So my favorite games are from that system.
But all in all i still refer to the 90's as a dark age for me.
edit: Damn I just realized i wouldn't have Batman: The Animated Series without the 90's so i must now be forever grateful.

What if Wes Anderson films were together in one universe for one massive, indie-rock RPG adventure?
Check out Popgun Chaos for the answer to this and respond!

My wife is convinced I need to watch that movie with her. I keep telling her if I wanna watch a couple people argue over mindless things I would film my self and go to church on the off times.

It's worth watching just because there is no way to NOT make fun of it. It's hilariously bad with no redeeming qualities. The fact that there are people who claim it's a good movie just astounds me.
-
Up on Popgun Chaos today . . .
My critique of Marvel's Civil War. Needless to say, I'm not a fan. Discuss my hatred for this strangely popular and crappy mega event crossover.
-
good read, but what are your opinions of other mega cross-overs?
I, for one, miss the awesome epic Marvel/DC crossovers that only happen once every ten years. I loved Marvel vs DC back when it came out, though now i realize how dumb the pair ups in the fights were, and making outcomes a fan vote was also incredibly stupid. But the one bright gem that came out of it were all the Amalgam books that i can only dream they continue someday, or maybe another Access mini.
-
So Cody, when do you get your own forums so we can bicker and rant about all the stuff Ross doesn't want to have to put up with?

Hell, I can't even get moderator status around here. I'll probably never get my own corner.
:'(
Joe - I'm slowly working on a four part essay titled "In defense of all things Crisis," to be released either next week or the next. I think it's pretty clear as to where my biases lie.

In all fairness, Ross has been busy, so I won't complain . . . yet . . .

Check out our very first guest column at Popgun Chaos! Steven King has written an excellent article about Star Wars and Christianity. GO! COMMENT! DO IT

cody got me all excited. Then I looked at the spelling.
-
cody got me all excited. Then I looked at the spelling.
Indeed. But who knew that Cody knew an Iowa Congressman (http://steveking.house.gov/)!
-
I apologize if people were confused, but I can't call him just "Steven." I have always referred to his full name because it's just too good to not write.
Still, check out the article because Steven King is an excellent writer.
-
i am sure he is an excellent writer.
-
On Popgun Chaos today, our movie critic, Miles Prower, reviews the greatest film ever made "Showdown in Little Tokyo."
Check it out!

On Popgun Chaos today, Missing the 90's takes us back to when Weezer was still a band worth listening to and we ask, "Should Weezer have stopped at Pinkerton?"
-
Now heres my thing, I hate old weezer, all the singles after beverly hills I liked by them though. I relly need to sit down and read your blog. Im so lazy!
-
Read my take on the recent APA study over the negative effects of superheroes on America's Youth. This is probably the best thing I've written for the site so far, mostly because I did some old school, mother fucking journalism and called Dr. Sharon Lamb from the APA to discuss her findings.
I'm seriously really proud of this and I hope you'll weigh in on the subject on my comments page.
-
Part 1 of my 5 part look at the various Crisis mini series is up on Popgun Chaos today! Check it out!

Sorry. I programmed the auto-poster wrong.
It's up now!

Over at http://www.popgunchaos.com, guest writer Steven King analyzes Lost in the only way it makes sense. Be sure to go check it out!

Talking about how comics are inaccessible to new readers in a story called "Why the world needs Superman" over at the chaos today.
-
Are B and C level heroes any more accessable than their A list counter parts?
-
The site redesign is pretty neat. A little intimidating to navigate at the moment, but I'm sure it won't be that bad once I actually take a look at it...
-
podcast is up
-
New website design looks bitchin'. Really damn good.
-
Thanks! I'm glad everyone likes it!
-
I'm just excited about you having your own audio program. I am a little concerned about you being able to talk as long as you like. Is somebody standing by with their hand on the power cord or a bucket of ice water in the event you get going on an unstoppable roll?
-
He has a deep cruel streak. He read Poor Little Bitch Girl by Jackie Collins at the end of the podcast.
-
I will admit that I wanted to reach through into the podcast and rip that book to shreds. But it was also fairly amusing.

I don't think it will ever come to that. Using Ross's equipment puts me at his apartment and bugging him and I don't want to wear out my welcome, so I plan on keeping things short and sweet.
. . .
Like yo' mama.

I think it's important to read what is "popular" from time to time to see what people are consuming. I love Jackie Collins because her writing is almost all exposition and it borders between not at all interesting or so over the top that it becomes uninteresting. Also, she is a very sexy woman.
. . .
Like yo' mama.

on Popgun Chaos today, i imagine what a hipster comic fan would be like.

Talking about the movie Southland Tales today on Popgun Chaos. Check it out and remember this movie is actually great when you think about it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtp14ikRvxo

No, I understand what the movie is trying to do, and there are some interesting or fun moments and choices, but... the film ended and I wanted the two hours of my life back.
-
No, I understand what the movie is trying to do, and there are some interesting or fun moments and choices, but... the film ended and I wanted the two hours of my life back.
You mean that you wanted the 2 hours and 25 minutes of your life back.
And I won't lie . . . I felt the EXACT same way. It's a good movie to think about afterward, but it's a shitty movie to watch.
-
Yeah, I read your review afterwards and couldn't believe it was that long! No wonder I felt it lasted forever!
I'm glad someone had pointed out a few things, like the rock's character was actually an actor acting like a tough guy, so his normal persona was all an act, and that weird quiet comntemplative tapping bits were the real character coming through. Things liek that I think my mind would have just been too overwhelmed/bored to have noticed otherwise.
Anyway, having read your review, I think I agree with it! At the very least, it haven't forgotten about the film...which is more than I can say about the plot or occurences in other films!
-
Talking about Watchmen and the Black Freighter today on the Chaos in what I would consider to be one of my best essays on the site.

How dare you not rise to my bait.
I thought what we had was special.

we do, baby. I should have posted a picture of myself, but I like the pic of the hipster folks.

So today's article made me want to go back and read through the Black Freighter section of Watchmen again. Which made me re-read Watchmen, despite all of the other work I have to do.
COOOOOOODDDDDYYYYYYYYYYY!

We're keeping the Batman momentum going with an article about Batman: the Animated Series and comparing a particular episode to a particular William Blake poem.

I don't know how to properly convey how awesome this is . . . I got to interview Greg Sestero (Mark from the movie, the Room)!!! You can read the interview at http://www.popgunchaos.com and ask him any questions you have in the comments section for his book about his experience on the Room!
THIS INTERVIEW WAS AMAZING!!!
-
Great interview. I'm a little sad about how it is on the shorter rather than longer side, but being able to pose questions ourselves that might get answers makes up for that. I love the way that he both brings up the crazy stuff Wiseau does, but still talks respectfully about him...
-

Two things about that:
1) Greg is really busy, so getting to interview him at all was a blessing.
2) My tape recorder screwed up in the middle so some of the interview is missing as I was transcribing. I salvaged what I could.
-
Yeah, it really sucks that your recorder fucked up on what could have been the best interview ever.
Also, what happened to the interface? You ditched the background and the site logo. It's so. . . blue. . .

This is the original version of the site and I like it better because it allows me to put RPPR links on it whereas the other wouldn't let me edit the main page.

Hey Cody,
Go see the facebook movie.
he did
-
I did indeed and I enjoyed it . . . for the most part.
I will say that I don't think there is any reason to watch it in theaters except to say that you saw it in an appropriate amount of time after it was released. Wait for the dollar theater two months from now, or just wait for netflix.
For the record, I do not support Torrent or downloading. A "friend" of mine informed me that he would download the Grant Morrison documentary I worked on and this pissed me off to no end. It's a very small, independent film and it's very well done. It deserves a little cash thrown its way.
Sorry for that rant, but I've had no one to rant to today.

You already know how much I love Hal and Parallax.
So instead of talking about my love for the GL, A few things I learned from this:
Your introduction to comics was alot like my own, except for you were quite a bit younger than I was when I finally started reading comics.
Your only a year older than I am, not that I think you sound old. It's just your a teacher and well in my head high school was only like 5 years ago.

Would that be the same man who wrote Batman/Aliens (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/61/BatmanAliens.jpg)? Then I shall have to respect his taste in blogs.

Today begins Project: Moms in ovens.
-
So, within the scope of that narrow field of dead parents, what would you say is the most original example? One that almost makes it new and interesting.
-
That's a tough question and I'm not sure how to answer that.
I suppose the recent Kevin Smith run on Green Hornet is interesting simply because it's so fucking stupid. 20-something son of the original Green Hornet decides to quit being a paparazzi whore and become a hero? Come on . . .

As promised:
"I was a big fan of Chaosium engine, so I ended up playing a lot of RuneQuest and Call of Cthulhu and I had a long running campaign with Middle Earth Role-Playing which is sort of paradoxical and ironic because I never particularly loved the Middle Earth setting. I preferred playing to DMing on the whole. If I was going to DM, all I really wanted to do was invent the world. I was never particularly interested in people tromping around in it."
-
I GOT TO INTERVIEW CHINA MIEVILLE!!!!!
He talks about RPGs, movies, comic books and all sorts of other things. Go check out part 1 of the interview today and then come back tomorrow for part 2!

The good news is that it's an arcade game and not a positively reviewed Xbox 360 game that you buy and soon learn that you absolutely hate. I've never seen that game around, but it's been a while since I've been near an arcade. They're pretty hard to come by in Arizona unless you hit a Dave&Busters.

First of the month, so that means http://www.popgunchaos.com has a new banner and a new tagline quote. This month's banner was designed by my hero, Chad Woody and I think its pretty spiffy.

Finally, the post today is the beginning of a novel i'm working on. Hope you like it.

Repeating to here to start the meme effect going: "Digital Psychodrama".

http://www.popgunchaos.com has an article about how much NASA's latest announcement has disappointed me. I channeled Chuck Klosterman on this one, so I hope it comes through in the writing.

You're dad's an academic game designer? Does that mean he's an academic that likes game design or a game designer that likes academics?
-
You're dad's an academic game designer? Does that mean he's an academic that likes game design or a game designer that likes academics?
He's a history major and a former marine so he likes to see games that encourage studying and contain as little violence as possible.
Me and my brothers have been playing video games for about fifteen years now I think and he's paid attention to what we play. My dad has always talked about wanting to see a game he'd like to play, something that involves research and freeform approach. I've explained just how limited games are in their information ability, since they are entirely self contained bundles, you couldn't really add anything to them once their done so there wasn't a way to make things like researching in the game effective aside from the character looking at books.
In the last few years I've discussed dynamic content with him as well as streaming information and that, for the first time, it looks like the kind of game he talked about might be becoming possible. Last time we talked about it, which was a few months back, I used what I knew about game code mechanics to help him imagine a structure for a game about earning your college degree.

I'm no N64 fan, but their WCW games were the best wrestling games ever. It had multiplayer like no one else. Thank you SO MUCH for reminding me of this because I had seriously forgotten how great these games were.
Damn . . . now I want to travel back in time to when I was in middle school and friends with Adam Glendenning so I could play this game and have it mean what it used to.

Unfairly comparing Walking Dead to Lost in my review of Walking Dead Season 1 at http://www.popgunchaos.com
-
Unfair to lost...because walking dead has a plot...
That kind of unfair....
I haven't read the article, so until i do, this is my hopeful guess as to it's content.
-
Apparently I'm one of the ten Americans who thought Lost was a pointless show. Cody, you do have some valid points about Walking Dead, but ultimately...Walking Dead is cooler than Lost. Its got zombies and guns and so far they don't feed the need for stupid fake smoke monsters and moving islands and assinine plot twists to keep a show alive because the network wants to keep it alive as a advertisment money maker.

No, you're not alone. I personally hated Lost. I hated the characters, I hated the ridiculous excuse for a plot, I hated the ending. Pretty much the only thing I appreciated about Lost was the injection of a lot of pretty cool sci-fi tropes into main-stream culture. However, it's my opinion that's not good enough. For instance, Fringe does this in a much, much better way; AND it's got better character development, plot hooks, and world-building.
The Walking Dead is a flawed show. This is true. The six-episode season gave very little chance to really get to know the characters. HOWEVER, it established a great base for expanding on them in the next seasons.
Cody, you're awesome, but I just can't agree with you on this one.

After reading your posts about them, and realizing some cowboy things I like, like Firefly and Cowboy Bebop, I think I've grown a new appreciation for westerns and I"m probably gonna borrow some of those Stephen King books from my grandma if she still has them. In fact my friend is starting a d&d campaign tomorrow where I guess Giants took over for nearly 60 years or something. And the character I made for it I want to say is like a mix of Jane, Spike and Kenshiro(from Fist of the North Star). So he's like this cowboy drifter halfling that goes around taking out the giant oppressors. He even has both magic gloves and a magic sash that both lasso targets. I was almost daring enough to give him two spiked gauntlets, one with lighting power and one with thunder power, to give people a lil bit of lightnin' and a lil bit of thunda to show off his manliness. I'm sorry, I think I just wanted to talk about my character to someone. But never the less I thought of making him because of reading your site.

That sounds amazing! Anytime Kenshiro can be worked into an RPG, its going to be a good game.

INTERVIEW WITH BOYCOTT-THOR IS UP!!!!!
(well, a link to the interview)
http://www.popgunchaos.com
-
Cody, you are awesome. That is all.
-
Apparently, some guy on my website doesn't think so. He said I was "dickish" and a "bitch."
-
I dont find those to always be mutually exclusive lol, although you sound odd on skype compared to the podcast.
I wonder if he'll go after lion witch and the wardrobe next since they recast jesus as a lion, thats offensive to white people, christians, and humans in general, not to mention gazelles? And its probably based more on christian mythology then Thor is on norse.
-
This whole interview seemed like this guy putting his fingers in his ears and yelling "I CAN'T HEAR YOU."
I suppose it's not a surprise that talking to this guy is like headbutting a brick wall. He has a very firm idea in his head of "OMG MARVEL HATES WHITE PEOPLE" which he appears to hold onto religiously. I also like that he downplays the part about this being a comic book movie and not a movie strictly based on Norse Mythology by saying "I don't read comics."
-
That dude's a bit of a loony. I wonder if he knows that 'white' as a word for race wasn't even in use before, oh, the 12th century, which is naturally long after the whole Edda thing. So 'the whitest of gods' is more like 'the brightest and shiniest'.
-
Apparently, some guy on my website doesn't think so. He said I was "dickish" and a "bitch."
I know someone who's gonna wake up without kneecaps...
...noone insults my Deity.
-
Apparently, some guy on my website doesn't think so. He said I was "dickish" and a "bitch."
You seemed a bit to me, but as you responded to the comment, you were annoyed or whatever. And the main time I noticed was when you asked him about the interview deal, but that was after he seemed to be making stuff up (about e-mailing or whatever). To be fair, I don't know what happened (since in theory you could have blown him off), but I doubt you would have passed up an interview opportunity, and I get the feeling you would have gone out of your way to get one. That said, I feel like it wasn't ridiculous or totally unjustified...

-
Here was the letter I sent to every e-mail on the Fox News site in hopes of getting the Superman story covered. I hope that you will read this in a Harry Caray voice because that is the voice it was written in.
Dear Fox News,
Yesterday, while all the world's eyes were on Anti-Christ Obama as he conjured up his little magic piece of paper that "proves" he is legally allowed to be president, an actual American hero renounced his American citizenship. I am OF COURSE talking about Superman in the pages of Action Comics #900.
In a story by David S. Goyer, Superman takes part in a peaceful protest in Tehran and then returns saying that he no longer believes in the "American Way." A comic blog I frequent brought it to my attention - http://www.popgunchaos.com/2011/04/28/superman-truth-justice-and-um/
Before you write me off as simply a loon, I hope that you will consider the implications of this. Long considered America's greatest superhero, some liberal asshole gets his hands on the character and turns him into a peace loving hippie. It infuriates me and I pray to my just and loving Christian God that Fox will get ahold of this story and run it for all it's worth. After all, Fox has been a watchdog on issues of anti-American sentiment in the comic book medium in the past with the anti-tea party message in Captain America.
Thank you for your time.

You are much kinder to Dragon Age II than I am.
I completely recognize its flaws (maybe not totally so in my review, but certainly in my own mind), but I can forgive many of them because I wasn't looking for much. DA2 was a very basic package, but when I was busy with school, it provided a simple escape that allowed me to clear my mind.
Had I gone into the game wanting much more than what it was, then yeah, I would have fucking destroyed it.
Feel free to rant away on the game though. What else was bad about it?

I know a lot of people are sick and tired of vampires, but Ron Marz has a new comic called "Shinku" out next week that is all about vampires in Japan and it's actually pretty good.
I'm probably mostly just excited that I could preview a comic before it came out, honestly.

I think by and large, you nailed the main issues. I had played Dragon Age: Origins previously to playing Dragon Age 2, in order to get a different end save-data to play with, and I think that may have really ruined the sequel to me.
I went in expecting a finished, polished product that provided an epic fantasy feel. What I got was a terribly rushed, half-assed game that did a few things right, but left everything else fall to the side.
While the combat is certainly much more fun and more interesting in the sequel (even if it's a little button-mashy if you're a TWF Rogue, on consoles at least where they, for some stupid-ass reason disabled the 'auto-attack' feature PC gamers get), and is probably the most improved aspect of the game, it isn't without some jarring flaws.
Difficulty is jerky at best of times - you can utterly breeze through many areas and then suddenly there'll be a near-random encounter that will just annihilate you, and it comes completely out of nowhere. Further, positioning and tactics are by and large laughable in the sequel, as enemies rain from the sky usually in the exact positions where it would be smart to put your mages to blast baddies.
You already mentioned how ruins all share the same two maps (one of them being the Deep Roads!) same with caves and towns and warehouses and what not, but are only separated by throwing a lazy-ass stone block in a doorway.
The characters which aren't Aveline, Varric, and perhaps Isabella are laughably one-dimensional (Anders can all but be summed up as 'WAHHH THE MAGES' while Varric summarizes Fenris handily: 'I hate you all! I was a slave! Grr!' and I can tell you the exact reason why they come off so poorly - you can't actually talk to them, save at a few canned junctures. Because of this, characters whose dialogue is almost entirely taken up in their Great Causeā¢ (mages for Anders, being a slave for Fenris, restoring that dumb-ass mirror for Merril, being an insufferable douchebag for Carver) just never get time to say things not related to it, and so suffer for it.
Then there's the story, which kind of also comes out of nowhere. Yeah, there's a bit of foreshadowing here and there, but it just doesn't feel like it ever manages to really develop itself, you know? Like, you think 'Hey, this bit about the Qunari could be really cool, maybe we'll learn more about their cult- KILL THE ARISHOK PLOT THREAD OVER" and then that's it. No more.
Further, the architectural styles are all the same (barring the Deep Roads) and terribly bland. This is a very minor thing, but it grates on me after a while - The first 2 hours of Dragon Age: Origins has more visual variety than in 40 hours of Dragon Age 2.
What really grates on me is that the game just feels woefully incomplete, from the poorly developed characters, the 4 whole maps being shared in every dungeon, the plot never really going anywhere per se, and most of all? MOST OF ALL, the number one thing that drives me up a wall about the game?
They cut out the flavor text on 98% of weapons and equipment. The DLC/Bioware reward items have it. Three or four other items have them. But everything else? Not so much as a word. Just numbers. While Dragon Age had a special description for an enchanted cheese knife, Dragon Age II will give you a huge-ass red sword called Blade of Red Birth. . .and it's just some numbers. Bodice Ripper. Just some more numbers. A shield called the Bulwark of Great Defense. Just numbers.
When you tear the flavor text out of equipment, it removes a great deal of immersion, and makes the game feel hollow.
All in all, it's a very average follow-up to a great game, and I think it could have used another 6 months in development.

No, for all the reasons you point out (plus there aren't just black people living in Africa). How can it even be made racist?

you know i just saw the harley quinn redesign for the reboot
and goddamn it looks terrible
what is wrong with the original harley quinn costume
(http://i.imgur.com/07Hc4.jpg)
nothing
that's what
-
Bleh, just had to google to find out what they did to her costume, and apparently she tumbled through a hot topic and whatever she managed to grab on her way out she decided to cut sluttier.
-
isn't the sluttier costume just a bonus?
i mean, come on, when was the last time you saw a female superhero/villain wearing a reserved outfit?
-
Kinda surprised to hear a skin tight full body glove referred to as reserved.
-

it looks generic. It reveals her skin but little about her character. In her original costume, you could instantly see the clown/harlequin theme. This time, she's just a stripper in a red and black corset.
-

fo superheroes, son. I mean, it shows almost zero skin.
-
It also doesn't make sense - she has an ammo belt but she's wielding a hammer and a knife.

Maybe theyre blanks to propel the boxing glove on a spring out of a fake bazooka? Although it doesnt look like that version of Harley Quinn would ever laugh or play a joke.

does it have to make sense

does it have to make sense
Yes! I demand an amount of sense from my comic books, especially from the character who are important to me.
