: My Rifts Experiment
: clockworkjoe December 06, 2010, 11:37:50 PM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJgAeGUD2FU

After seeing this trailer, I decided I wanted to run Rifts for the RPPR group. I also heard about this item at the Palladium store: http://www.palladiumbooks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=XMAS&Category_Code=Spec

A grab bag of random items but you can ask for specific things

I asked for Rifts books. If I get nothing but Rifts books, I will give each RPPR player a book and then I will run a Rifts game where each player has to make a character from their gift book.

Then I will run a game based on the movie the Eliminators. I will throw in other appropriate films as encounter fodder as appropriate.

I will make an 'unpacking' video when I get the grab bag.

If the AP for this can be posted by the 25th it will be the best Christmas ever.

That trailer is by far the most awesome movie trailer I have seen today.

I know a far amount about Rifts if you have questions.

Rifts Australia might be a good book for this. It's got stuff like land trains, road warriors...

: Ryo December 07, 2010, 10:43:09 AM
I agree Rifts Australia fits the clip best, but Rifts Japan is all kinds of cool.
(staying with main book, the group looked like)
Borg, Rogue Scientist, Vagabond, Juicer.
: Re: My Rifts Experiment
: Robot Master December 08, 2010, 12:49:29 AM
Yeah, the borg rules would cover all of the cyborg stuff. The river rat could technically be a Road Sentinel O.C.S. At the very least Rifts: Australia would cover a lot of that gas starved, dusty environment stuff including road gangers and some mutants.

Rifts Japan has rules for introducing some rather "Fist of the North Star" level martial arts characters.

I have no suggestions at to what to do for Denise Crosby's character though. Maybe find a Bing Crosby template somewhere and change the sex from male to female and add a few "Tasha Yarr" points to the sheet?

What? Did they take Australia and water it down for the overseas market?

I personally had to kill two Kangaroo's and strangle a Crocodile just to make this post.

On a more relevant note, this sounds like a recipe for epic.  Though good luck with using the RIFTS rules set.

In any case, this game will most certainly be better than the movie (which is unfortunately not bad enough to be good).

I remember catching this a few times on USA "Up All Night" when I was younger. I -loved- that damn movie.

Yeah, I watched it with a friend once as part of a bad movie night.  It's modestly amusing at times, but a RiffTrax would help it considerably.

Denise Crosby's character is the rogue scientist/scholar (since it looks like she is the brainy type with a wide range of knowledge).

Apparently the film grossed almost 2mil its opening weekend and only weekend running.

I don't think I could ever watch this movie - the one in my imagination is likely to be far better than it actually is, and I don't want to ruin it.

I hope the game isn't even really like a movie. I hope it's a two hour long action movie trailer: nothing really happens, nothing is explained, and lots of things blow up.

Man I'd love to get into this game.  Please make an actual play of this soon!!

I ordered the X-mas bundle myself about a month ago.  I got the Rifts Ultimate Edition, an adventure sourcebook, the Coalition War Campaign book, and a copy of Rifter 51.  All of them were signed by Siembieda and several of the crew of Palladium.  I gotta say, Palladium's really supportive of their community for offering a deal like that.

Man, Rifts == High School for me. Back in the day that was all we played.

No Cyber-Docs, no City Rats. Nothing but dragons and glitter boys.
: Re: My Rifts Experiment
: Robot Master December 14, 2010, 09:58:55 PM
I LOVE playing GlitterBoys.

(...if this were in any other forum, that statement would be sooooo gay)

But seriously? I love playing Glitter Boys. Why? Because every time your turn is up you can fire that big-ass damage dealing cannon and whether it be in play or in your mind you can make up your own awesome "ramp up" sequence for how EPIC firing that god damned gun is.

Shit the game itself even goes into detail about how the Glitter Boy's boots fire pylons into the ground to stabilize the armor in place so that the Glitter Boy itself doesn't go flying backwards when the GIGANTIC FUCKING RAIL GUN goes BOOM.

I like to think that everyone at the table contemplated suicide at some point during the game.

I think if you channelled Heavy Metal magazine with it's weird environs, buxom hunnies and wacked-out, alien weirdness, rather than the typical Rift fanboy cliche', you could have a truly epic, non-ridiculous game.  Heavy Metal Magazine (http://www.heavymetal.com/index.php?id=1520)  Just look at some of these covers...plenty of killer Rift ideas!

I've only played Rifts once, I do own the main book, but have yet to play or run it. But if I did...it'd be something right out of a Heavy Metal mag...complete with soundtrack...(Black Sabbath:Mob Rules!! Helll anything RJD)
 The Mob Rules  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqswQcJ-wvE)

Neon Knights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJMqVwnzpII&feature=related)

The idea of running a Glitter Boy never occured to me. Seems kinda boring, totally lacking in any interesting roleplay potential (unless blowing the crap out of stuff is your version of roleplay).

Something more exotic or esoteric would suit my tastes more...something psi, mutant or maybe wizardly on the run and/or seeking knowledge.

Or for that matter maybe a Robocop-ish, haunted borg with the soul of a man, theme.

I think it's up to the players...Rifts doesn't have to always devolve into a mega-damage, death orgy. Rifts can have a soul....just look past the cliche'.

He is. His pants have MD armor and mega-cockels, descibe the name, are SD.

After listening to the AP I have an idea for a movie where a guy wakes up naked and bloody in the middle of a corn field and has flash backs involving nightmarish visions of horror. As he chases down his past trying to rebuild his memories while perserving his sanity he uncovers a string of mutilated people and mental patients with broken minds leading back to a single, seemingly normal suburban home.

And it turns out he played Rifts.

I listened...and mulled....twas a farce of a Rifts game fer sure. :o
I couldn't help but imagine all the action taking place in the Eliminator setting...except for the raptor punching batman that is. ;D

Anyhoo...thanks Ross for posting it. :)

I'm still semi-curious as to what arrived in the grab bag.  ???

I'm going to order one myself for x-mas. 8)

Someone should have handed Caleb a Snickers.

Seems to me this game was shot down way before it even had a chance to take off due to Caleb's diva complaints throughout the game.

It wasn't the best game, but it had it's moments.  Come on, it's the RPPR crew here.  The ingredients are all there for a good time.  The only reason a game wouldn't go well, is because the players didn't want it to go well.

Thanks for killing Dresden, Ross.  That made my day.  :D
