: Patrick's Going to Run a Skype Game
: Setherick December 14, 2010, 07:24:08 PM
Some time over the x-mas break, I'm considering running a Skype game. (This game is unrelated to Kickstarter reward games either that Ross is running or that I would play in.) So I'm taking suggestions on what to run and asking who would want to play?

The two games I'm considering are

1) CoC Modern / DG game where the players are hired to investigate a rash of robberies of mythos related items.

or

2) A Fear Itself game where the players are a S.W.A.T. members who have to enter a Content Screening office where the employees have gone crazy and started killing one another and barricaded themselves in for no apparent reason.

I'd be absolutely willing to play in either.

I would enjoy playing Fear Itself.

When is the planned date?

I would absolutely be interested in either.  Because I like Fear Itself so much, I'd vote for that.  If it helps, I'm probably free around New Years as I'm not traveling much this year and actually have some vacation time.

I would like to play if schedule permits.  The first one sounds interesting (as I've kind of wanted to give the DG scenario a try).  Another question/suggestion is the old pbp you had started but were unable to continue (the one with 3.5 commoners).  I was quite invested in my basket weaver ;D

We will definitely play this via Skype. I need to write up the rules/logic of the game so that I can run it more smoothly on the fly.

No planned date yet because I wanted to see when people are free, plus I'm not sure when my in-laws are leaving town. It'll probably be around New Years or just after.

Fear Itself but that's because I know what you have in mind for that - also the rules are better for skype - less dice rolling and fewer stats to track

Changed my preference to Fear Itself if I can play as I haven't played it yet...

But that's just if I am fortunate enough to play...

If the game works out well, I'll run it twice.

Alright, ya'll I've got an update. The (first of two possible) Fear Itself games will be on December 28 with character creation beginning at 6:00pm CST and game time starting at 7:00pm CST. The first five to respond are in this game. Also, assume that Ross is playing because he'll be recording unless he tells me how to do it.

Continued interest.

I'll have a character before the game if we can get some game background. I have the book.

I'm writing out all my game notes now. I had the other game written out, but this one was still in draft stage and notes.

I will play.  I don't have any plans as of the moment, but I need to check on potentially traveling, so if I can't, I will know by Friday.  I don't know much (read nothing) about Fear itself, though I will look for quick-start rules or a basic outline so I can have some idea.  But if this is a problem, let me know and I'll drop out or whatever.

Thanks

I don't think I'm going to be able to handle 5 + Ross if he plays let alone add another. I'll probably run another Skype game in the spring sometime.

Also, I'll be posting details about this for those who want to generate characters early later on today.

Nah, think of it this way, you're first on the list for the next game. Also, it's hard to beat Tad and some of the others to recruitment posts when they leave the forums up in a tab and constantly hit F5. Like Ross does. Seriously, post something and then message Ross to see if he's read it. Hint: he has.

I suck...

I'd forgotten how much bigger the Fear Itself books is compared to Esoterrorist. Kind of funny really, takes more page count to play a "weaker" character.

So, what stereotypes do we have to work with? I'm thinking lawyer, child support enforcement, or dairy clerk.

Addition:

OH MY GOD! You can hit F5 and refresh a page! I bearly even have to move the mouse now.

Sorry, the update got delayed because last weekend was nuts and I did grades on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. Also, yesterday, I moved a 400 pound TV cabinet. I promise the update will happen today with game instructions.

Game is still on for the 28th starting around 6:00CST for character creation and game time beginning at 7:00.

Players

Ross (maybe, if playing he's going to play a "NPC")
Tad
Mckma
Crash2455
Salkovich
AmishNinja

Patrick is the alternate if one of them drops out.

More Updates:

For the game, we will not use concepts, but we will us the risk factors and worst thing you ever did.

The PCs are members of a (fictional) counter-terrorism unit run by the FBI who have been trained to handle biological, chemical, and nuclear terrorist attacks. They have been quickly assembled to investigate a possible "test-run" attack at Mimetic Solutions, a content screening office outside of Iowa City, by an unknown agent using unknown means. More details to follow at briefing.

Build all characters with the above in mind, using the standard rules of spending 10 points on investigative abilities and 60 points on general abilities.

: AmishNinja December 25, 2010, 01:41:13 PM
Might be a good idea to post the investigative skills we were thinking of for our characters so as not to overlap a ton. I'll post some details when I get my character concept down.

No, it's actually because having no combat skills lets you take double points in fleeing.  Patrick wants to make sure none of us have anywhere to run.

We're gonna get our part of that info BEFORE the game, right? Cus, homework right at the start of a session and really slow things down.

You asked for it Tad, so here's almost 800 words of pregame text. Ross is desperately trying to finish ZotW, so if he'll play Dr. Whitworth if he plays tomorrow.

---

The team is based in the Chicago offices. The director leads the team into a briefing room. In the briefing room, the director quickly introduces Dr. Andrew Whitworth, a trained psychologist who specializes in combat trauma. The director explains that Dr. Whitworth will be accompanying the team to the location.

The director says, “We have a possible test-run terrorist attack at Mimetic Solutions, a content screening office, in Iowa City today. This is the moment all of you have been training for. We have no idea whether the agent was chemical or biological. Nor do we know the delivery system, but we believe that it may be an aerosol.”

“Furthermore, we’re not sure exactly how the agent causes the…uh…side effects that it does.” The director clears his throat. “It’s best if you see for yourself.”

The director pulls up security camera footage from the cameras at Mimetic Solutions.

The footage is taken from a stationary camera that shoots a wide angle shot of the cubicle area. You cannot see into the individual cubicles from the shot. The security footage at first shows a normal office work day with people in front of their computers at their cubicles, then in one of the cubicles there is a minor disturbance, a woman runs through the frame frantically trying to dial a cell phone, then within a minute after the entire office erupts in a state of chaos. It’s hard to tell from the footage the director shows to make out details, but it’s obvious that employees are fighting one another, what looks like blood splatters across one of the walls of the cubicle, a woman runs out of a cubicle being chased by a man holding a pair of scissors…

The director stops the footage at this point and says, “This is why we believe this is a terrorist attack.”

He starts the footage back and up and points to a man who calmly walks through the chaos in the office. The footage breaks to another camera. The calm man walks into the frame continuing to walk at a steady pace. The footage breaks to another camera that shows the calm man looking the front doors of the building and calmly walking back through the office building until he disappears behind a wall. Thirty seconds later the security camera footage goes to static and then completely black.

The director looks at the team and says, “We’ve identified the man as Morgan Perry, the office manager of Mimetic Solutions. If anyone knows what caused this incident, we believe that man is it.”

“There is one other thing  you will want to hear.” The director plays an audio clip.

Two voices are distinctly heard over the audio clip.

Operator: “9-1-1. Do you have an emergency?”
Marsha: “I’m at Mimetic Solutions and Tony…oh god…oh god…did you see that?”
           Operator: “Ma’am? What happened? Ma’am?”
           Marsha: “DID YOU SEE THAT?!?”

There is a sound like the cell phone was dropped. There is screaming in the background. Then the audio ends.

The director hesitates for a moment after playing the audio clip. “Two officers responded to the call. Something happened at the site though before the two even got into the building. One of the officers panicked and started shooting into the building before firing at his partner with a gun. His partner fired back, wounding his partner. The partner died, however, of an apparent heart attack on the way to the hospital. The autopsy won’t be available until tomorrow.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have until tomorrow.”

The director tells them that the building has been quarantined and that there is a ring of local police being assisted by the FBI and ATF that surround the building, although no one has appeared to come out of the building. Further, the officers surrounding the building have been instructed not to enter until the team arrives. The partner of the dead responding police officer is in custody if the team wants to debrief him in person. Also, a secretary that was on her lunch break at the time of the attack is in custody. Finally, the team has access to all the security footage from Mimetic Solutions for the hour leading up to the incident, if they want to examine it all while in transit.

“There is a helicopter fueling to take you to Iowa City now. There are people still alive inside the building, both hostile and innocent victims, the more people we can recover the more we will find out about this attack and what caused it. Your mission is to get in, identify the agent, find Perry Morgan, and rescue survivors in that order. You should treat any hostile employees you encounter with extreme prejudice. The more you can learn, the better we can prepare if this happens again.”

I'd love the notes. It sounds like you're going to run this as a Fear Itself game, versus a CoC game. I would like to try and run it as CoC.

I was thinking about playing something of a more (read very) beurocratic character before seeing the background text.  Now that I see that, I'm going to look at it and rethink to what would be more fitting...

Basically I liked the idea of him finding comfort and solace in buearacracy and "order."  Not to say he is trapped by the system (ideally I would have liked him to know how to move through it and use it to his advantage), he just like the consistency and sameness of it.

I'll probably be logged onto Skype from now until the game (though I might be away for up to an hour or so at some point)...

I am so bummed that I won't get a chance to play this game.

I agree with Jon/Bill, the intro for this game was amazing. It really piqued my interest.

Jon, if you plan on running the game using the CoC system, I am definitely in.

I don't have a problem learning the Fear Itself system, I would just need the time to walk through it. Seth was kind enough to offer me that chance, but unfortunately due to time and location, I would be late for the game.

However I am familiar with the CoC rules and I would love to get a chance to play a game with a group of you guys, if you wanted to get a game running.

If you plan on running this again Seth, let me know a few days ahead of time and I will put in the due diligence, familiarize myself with the Fear Itself system (or walk through it with you) and carve out a nice large chunk of time to dedicate to what sounds like a lot of fun!

Hopefully this will make the cut as an AP on the site.

Anyway, feel free Jon or Seth to send me a PM with any details. Also, I am available for discussion most evenings if any of you want to go the Skype/Gmail/Yahoo route...

Good luck with the game tonight guys!

I'll be AFK until 6:00 CST because I'll be making and eating dinner. We can iron character issues out at 6:00. If we are a player short, I may provide you with some quickly drawn up mooks to act as muscle.

---

In game update, the director also provides each of you with a basic floor plan of the office building. The numbered areas are used for navigational purposes.

Pretty much no matter what you do, your dude will be built for action.  There are like 10 skills and you have 60 points to spend.

Also, I'm drafting this dude (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dDcDwDjC6KWC4cI40_pgGqEqZnVcmnkeWnu7Dlktvm4/edit?hl=en)

Also, I might miss a bit of the 6:00 segment as I'll probably be having dinner then.

I could play, though I've never played Fear Itself and don't have any of the books.

Well if you've got 9 bucks, it's available as a PDF download.
Okay, got it. I think I can crank out a sheet quick.

Thanks everyone for alpha-testing that game. I think Ross is right about the details in how the game could be better. When I get a chance to revise it, I'll turn it into a 10-12K one-shot with pregenerated characters.

I'm definitely going to keep a hold on the notes so I can run it if I need something that week (since I usually GM).  In that case, do y'all mind if I use others' characters as pregens?  Feel free to use mine (though you may want to modify it as he had a lot of skills that were largely useless for the scenario)...

I think we did try to get into our characters, and did a pretty good job, the "problem" may have just been that Charlie did it too well which made it absolutely hilarious because from an outside perspective it was pretty easy to tell before about halfway through that things were just going to go to hell...

Negotiator could be an interesting character to use as a pregen and build one or two encounters around. I'll have to think about it when I revise the notes. How do you guys think that character archetype could be best realized?

When I make pregens, I'm thinking about making 6 characters.

Point Man (secondary role would be electrical repair / handyman)
Point Man (secondary role would be infiltration expert / lock pick expert)
Medic
Biochemist
Psychologist (secondary role would be computer repair / technician) - Whitworth

I need one more so what should it be? The secondary role of the sixth character would also be computer repair / technician, like Whitworth. What archetype should that be? Negotiator?

I was the negotiator.  In all honesty, I suppose it was a bad idea to think I could negotiate with anyone after reading the pregame text.  It was worth a shot, though.

Listening to recordings of yourself is one of the oddest things, and it takes a lot of getting used to, I find. Unless you  naturally have an awesome voice, which I don't.

Plasma screen TV from break room.

Most buildings with servers have Uninterruptable Power Supplies to keep the servers online.  These are powered by lead acid batteries.  You can take the acid out of those batteries, put it in a drinking glass, and throw it in someone's face.

Anything heavy or vaguely sharp works.

Anything with a cable can be employed as a garrote:

Traps?

Also, a friend recommended 5 Minutes to Kill Yourself (http://games.adultswim.com/five-minutes-to-kill-yourself-adventure-online-game.html) for other deadly uses of office supplies.

This is a good one. I like the idea of a roving IT guy, carrying a piece of CAT5 cable as a garrote. Actually, the person going to scrounge parts for the servers could run across the guy or notice that some of the cable is missing. I think the guy should be a random encounter somewhere in the building though.

Which reminds me that I need to put an IT office somewhere in the building that has the supplies to repair the servers, so that people have to go several places to collect several different things. I oversimplified it for the alpha test.

This could also be the place to employ a battery acid trap.

The trick is not to make the traps/improvised weapons too complicated. Due to the state of mind these people are in, it should be kept relatively simple. But yeah, I'm sitting here in an office right now and even after looking around I can't add much of anything that hasn't already been mentioned. I'm not a very innovative office-warrior.

Edit: If you want to make things a little deadlier, you could say that there was some office renovation going on at the time. Tools make for good weapons.
: Re: Patrick's Going to Run a Skype Game
: crash2455 December 30, 2010, 07:12:41 PM
You could also include things that someone might keep in a handbag/messenger bag (which I suppose you did with Hairspray)

Emergency Car Things:
Road Flares
Those weird hammers for breaking out your windows

Small Tools/Multitool

You can also fill such a bag with heavy objects and just flail it around.

Ross and I discussed lawn upkeep tools at one point, but I didn't add them into the alpha test. I wanted to see if the situation was convincing enough to get players to become paranoid and start accusing each other. That part worked.

Now it's all about deadly and stability destroying encounters.

Pregens should be done tonight minus a few character details on some of them. Currently the order goes

2 Point Men - One an Expert Infiltrator (only character with Infiltration) and One that doubles as a handyman (only character with Mechanics).
1 Biochemist
1 Medic
Andrew Whitworth - Trauma Psychologist

and the new pregen

Donovan Staley - An IT Specialist from the Department of Defense that is there to specifically retrieve sensitive data from Mimetic Solutions computers and servers.

Staley is the major update in the game. Mimetic Solutions has recently been contracted by the DOD to do content screening.

Just started re-listening to the AP of our session, and something occurred to me. The primary reason we didn't investigate any of the side offices or meeting areas was due to the fact that the server room - which was Ross' objective and quickly became ours - was so easily accessible. Yes, the printer room was right in front of it, but that was the only real dangerous thing to deal with.

Perhaps if the servers were hidden away in some offices - Perry Morgan's, maybe - or the room was simply moved - perhaps into the northwest corner, across the building from the secondary entrance - it would be a damn good opportunity to throw more of those crazy bastards/traps at the PCs. Seemed like a lot of cool, creepy stuff was missed simply because the servers were dead set in the middle of the building.

I noticed that as well. I'm working on that in v2 of the notes. The servers are still accessible in terms of space, but now it takes three PCs to get them operational. Also, all of the pregen characters now have specific drives so that players that have specific motives other than the orders given to the team will have to negotiate with other players to accomplish those motives.

Also, all of the pregen characters now have specific drives so that players that have specific motives other than the orders given to the team will have to negotiate with other players to accomplish those motives.

I think this will make a huge difference.  I know at least personally I went with the flow because that's how my character was built.  It also definitely felt like others were kind of doing that (though I don't want to say that incorrectly).  Having some motivation that may or may not be tied to the others' could easily force more exploration and more of that inter-party paranoia that was so much fun...

On a side note, I'm so glad that everyone seemed to work well and have fun with that.  I know one of my friends had great difficulty when his character died as a result of another's actions (it was CoC).  He's grown out of that and it would be fine now, it's just that I've had a few bad experiences and I'm glad this wasn't one of them...

Absolutely. I basically played my character's motivation as: "There are a lot of injured people in here, and we have a team member quickly growing irrational, so I'm going to save everyone I can and make sure my team gets out okay."

What's interesting is if you guys would have followed Charlie's lead in securing the building first, you'd have seen everything. Also, I could have been a giant dick and just started sending waves of employees at you, but I wanted to see how the structure of the game worked before pushing players to breaking points.

I was honestly expecting this to happen - one of the things that struck me was how quiet the building actually was. It was actually creepier that way.

I think that plan went to hell the minute Ross shot that guy in the head. That is the exact moment where the team started spiting off and doing there own things.

Also, I based the plan on how police do raids in real life; you don't want to start collecting evidents until you know the building's cleared.
