: Where do you listen to RPPR?
: Tadanori Oyama February 17, 2011, 07:19:19 PM
Ross suggested it so I did it.

Welcome to "Where do you listen to RPPR?". Obviously that's just a title because we're also interested in "how do you listen", "why do you listen", and "what is the most awesome place you've listened" to RPPR.

Myself I nearly always listen to RPPR on my MP3 player while I'm walking around, so it's either between my house and the supermarket or between my house and my local game store most of the time. This also means, since I walk late at night, that I am often wandering dark streets at night while listening to CoC games.

I listen to APs when I'm at the gym sometimes. It's a hilarious fusion of jock behavior and extreme nerdiness. No pump-up tunes in these earphones, no sir. Just the sounds of some bros hanging out, rollin' some dice together.

I was listening to the Prototype game once while doing a pretty tough set - and it was right at the part where Jason throws a rock at an oncoming car. I laughed so hard that I almost dropped my weights. I actually had to stop working out for 5 minutes or so because I was absolutely dying of laughter. It got me some stares.

Otherwise, I often listen to the APs at work, which can prevent me from giving it my undivided attention all the way through. Once the weather is nicer, perhaps I'll go out for walks at night while listening and get creeped out like everyone else. Caleb's last game in particular was heavy on the Creep Factor but it's tough to really feel it when you're in a well-lit office with other people.

Riding the bus/walking to school mostly.  I also listen to them while cleaning or cooking (this is actually my favorite time because it's the perfect thing to do)...

I normally listen to RPPR APs while I'm home. Sometimes I'll cook or clean with the headphones on, or just relax at the couch or at the bed while listening to the APs.

At my computer or in my room on my labtop.

I listen to podcasts on my laptop with headphones, and in general (and APs especially) at work while playing video games or browsing the web or in the rare times Im actually working, pretty much anytime I'm not interacting with someone or watching a video/tv show/anime.  Also when at home and playing some video games.

Just wish there were more of them sometimes (specially when the weeks AP is a con game, cause i just cant listen to those), since the aps + the other podcasts i listen to aren't enough to fill all weeks time at work sometimes.

I usually listen to RPPR while trying to bang something out on the keyboard or guitar. It's pretty much the only time I can justify sitting in place and listening to people talk about cyberpunk Lady Gaga.

Well, if you live or work in New York, I listen to podcasts while processing your tax information and documentation. Most of the time I'm a phone rep, which means I listen to the shows and games in between calls to unwind after someone gets done calling me a fascist and other similar names, but more recently I've been doing a lot more correspondence work with collection actions following tax evasion. Long story short it's long, boring, extraordinarily thankless, and the people I'm helping fix their own credit and to stop breaking the law refuse to see it that way and like to waste long periods of time calling me names and making vague threats against my life and livelihood, so the podcasts go a long way in making my job that much more tolerable.
Lemme put it this way. If it was not for a gigantic mp3 player, lots of caffeine, and fun gaming discussions and actual plays, there is literally no way I'd be getting through the 11 hour shifts we're doing right now. As is, I'll chug through a minimum of 4-6 hours of audio on any day when overtime is offered, which is actually every day for the last two months, and likely to continue until April at the earliest. So while my job may be the least 'terrifying' job you could possibly have, the only thing keeping me sane is listening to a bunch of people go crazy for a few hours every day.  ;D
So, not trying to rock the boat or anything here, but any long-ass APs from either the RPPR crew or the nice folks on the community site would be mighty kind in the next couple of months. I've gone through all of the RPPR APs at least once over the last year, heard the whole catalogue of the main podcast, listened to the Adam Scott Glancy recordings 3-4 times each, and now I'm pushing through the community APs for Masks of Nyarlothatep and Hourglass of Kavura. Thank you for so many quality hours of sanity and entertainment. You all make my job semibearable, and I really appreciate it.

I listen to RPPR while I'm traveling between home and school/work, or while working out, or while cleaning up my house.

Generally, I listen to the podcasts while I'm doing anything by myself that doesn't require me to create anything.
(Also, kind of odd, but I listen to RPPR while I'm trying to fall asleep some nights. I can't fall asleep very well, and it helps to have noise, so I've very often fallen asleep listening to DnD antics or CoC creepery. This also led to me waking up one time in the middle of the Slenderman AP, which was it's own special brand of terrifying.)

The best place I ever listened to RPPR was on a train from Connecticut to Charleston, SC. Marathoned the U-boote Heraus session, all eleven or twelve hours, front to back. It was amazing.

I listen to APs and episodes mostly on the way to/from work on the bus or pretty much whenever i need to walk anywhere. I used to be able to listen to them at work but due to the current "economic depression" The NHS have needed to make cutbacks on many things including Jobs, Yearly Salary increments and fun. Thus i am no longer allowed to listen to an MP3 player or radio at work. I'm expecting smiling and eating to be next.

Well game 19 of Masks is extra special long just for you SageNytell.

I listen to RPPR either on my front porch, while I'm in the dark in the basement and when I drive between towns. I've got my recliner, incense, pipe, coffee and Baileys for when a New World episode comes out. But lately at work I've been tasked with purging our file archives and shredding thousands of files so RPPR is keeping me from loosing it as the shredder jams because paper from the 80's is just too much for it to handle.

I listen to RPPR at work, at home and when I go for walks.  I also listen when I'm sailing in and around Catalina island.   It can take 4 hours each way and it's a great way to pass the time.

Funny anicdote about the Uboat AP and sailing.   The boat isn't all that big, just 30ft, so there's only one cabin light and you look straight into the cabin from the cockpit if the cabin panels are open.   It has two colors, regular white light (like in houses) and red light.  You use the red light at night if the cabin panels are open so you don't murder the night vision of whoever is on the helm.    So night has fallen and we're approaching where we're anchoring for the night.  I'm in the cabin, with the red light on, sitting at the table going over a chart, comparing what we charted verses what the gps said we sailed and listening to the Uboat AP because its nautical.  I lean over so I can look up into the cockpit and ask my roommate on the helm  "Think we have time to kill cultists this weekend?"   He just looked at me and shook his head.

Tad, you know we are brothers in arms, I'll forever be your sidekick (albeit inept and shoddy). I've tried to best your record of re-listenging to the APs and episodes, but I know you far out strip me.

If I may ask, in capitol letters, WHEN WILL YOU RECORD AN ACTUAL PLAY!? I will listen, and comment.

P.S. No disrespect MoonDog, I like your avatar picture.

Also, capitol letters should go to your senator or congressman.  Maybe you can write them in all capitals.

Yeah, the Rogue Trader skype games are my creation.

I do have some APs on record but I don't have anything I've wanted to post. Alot of my cache was deleted when I reformated my PC and I haven't pulled anything new off of my Zoom H2 yet.

Hey, there's another place I listen to RPPR: at my computer, copying my own APs off of my Zoom H2!

I listen to AP's while I MAKE computer games. I've got a small little startup and we're going for a fantasy themed action romp for the iPhone / Android, so this keeps my mind in the right frame of reference while I model zombies and make dungeons. One day I might even play a real table-top game myself!

you've never even played tabletop rpgs? That's awesome that our little podcast has gotten your attention then. I wonder how many other listeners are like you in that respect.

Also - wooo indie vidya game making!

Yeah, I'd love to get into it. I used to work at a bigger company where story in games was everything, so I'm taking that knowledge and making sure my game stands out in an otherwise story-less market to see if we get anywhere. Your podcasts are week-to-week proof that story can be incredibly rewarding! It'd be great to do that as a hobby too.

Yup, I've got a stellar programmer who's going to make our Android port in no time at all. He's got it all figured out. Windows mobile, now that's another story. That all has to be in c# apparently.

I listen to RPPR on my mp3 player at work, you turn my 8 hours of answering phones and sorting medical bills into 8 hours of Actual Play goodness. I am now on session 16 of the NWC and I am gonna start listening to the KGB files part 1, luckily I am so back logged that I think I will be ok for several months. I also skipped ahead to Bryson springs and I listened to about 35 minutes of it so far. But the damn New World keeps pulling me back in.

j/k. I listen when I commute to work and also when I'm cleaning around the house. I am also one of the people who was inspired to play TTRPGs by the podcast. Thanks for showing how it's done!

Me, I'm largely stuck at home, these days.  I don't get out except for infrequent grocery runs and a Sunday-based tabletop game every week.  I have a small trailer that I hole up in with my laptop.  My RPPR fixes happen while I'm playing games like Sims 3, and the like.  But I also listen to the podcasts whenever I'm doing prepwork for my own games.  I ran an altered version of Tom's first Divine Fire scenario thanks to listening to it while I was prepping for the closing session of a D&D I was running at the time.

The first AP that I listened to was Tom's first Divine Fire run, with the PCs as Nazi special forces. It still holds a special place as one of my favorite APs.

This was also the first thing I downloaded from RPPR. Listening to Divine Fire is what made me want to play CoC, and I believe it is because it follows the Indiana Jones principle:

Pulp + Nazis = A shat load of fun!

(I also ran DF for my group and they still say it's one of their favorite scenarios). I plan on dropping the KGB files on them soon  ;D
: Re: Where do you listen to RPPR?
: AdriRaven February 25, 2011, 11:02:25 AM

My running of Divine Fire took elements from both of the early playtests, and I interspersed it with elements of a failed Demon: the Fallen game I'd never gotten to run which took place in a similar setting.  I ran my group through as prisoners of war: two US Army soldiers, a captured Allied scientist, a troublesome English archaeologist, a nosy war journalist, and a torch singer who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

They hit trouble when the truck stopped.  That sort of set the tone for the evening.  Once they discovered that their guards were gone, the ranking Army man (a Colonel who had been in Italy with his wife when it fell) got into an argument with the scientist over the best way to proceed.  In the meantime, the other Army fellow (a sergeant, I think) decided he was going to try to check the towers, and nearly broke his leg when he slipped off of the ladder.  Eventually, the argument stopped when the archaeologist snidely suggested that the two weren't producing nearly enough hot air to keep them warm in the mountains and that they should go and find some shelter.  The two Army folks stayed with the vehicles, and the lower-ranking one press-ganged the torch-singer as a second pair of hands to try to get the truck in working order to make the trip down, and to clear some room.

The first building they entered was the mess hall, where they encountered a mad, blind soldier, and the journalist tried to bluff his way through things - and totally blew it.  So they ended up in a tense standoff between three civilians with crap all combat skill, and one crazy-train Nazi.  About this time, the Army Colonel caught sight of something moving in the shadows near the compound and started out to get a look at it - without letting his subordinate know - and blew a Sneak roll.  That was when Koeler made himself known from the main building and started taking potshots at both him and the flickering shape.  Hearing the gunfire from the mess hell, the three civilians and the Nazi they were dealing with found themselves in a furious tussle that left the journalist and the scientist badly beaten and bloodied (the archaeologist got in some hellaciously badass rolls and kicked the mortal crap out of the Nazi, though).

The gunfire outside and the fight in the mess hall only lasted a couple of turns, leaving the civilians trying to figure out what to do with their new prisoner, as well as themselves.  If memory serves, they eventually locked him in one of the freezers (which is how they discovered certain sweet meats in one of them...).  Anyway, the Army Colonel had gotten tagged by Koeler because he had been trying to close with the shape that Koeler was firing at (he totally botched a Luck roll, then the player threw a fit and left the table, meh), so he was out.  So the remaining characters holed up in the mess hall after the gunfire died down, came up with a plan to work up some improvised weapons and explore the main building.  By this time, the civilians were really keyed up due to some failed SAN rolls when they found what was in that second freezer, and when the Army grunt tried to take charge and run the show, another argument broke out, this time between the grunt and the journalist  The scientist and the archaeologist managed to cool tempers somewhat, but by then, the damage was done, and the group was more of a bunch of individuals.  So the Colonel is down, holed up in the Mess Hall, the grunt storms out to try to get the truck working again (so he can leave the others to die), and the rest of them are stuck with their plan of investigating the main building.  The exploration went pretty smoothly, they encountered Koeler, and struck up a tentative alliance with him, managed to arm themselves with some proper weapons from the stash he'd made himself.  That was when the real fun began.  The Army Grunt was outside when he realized that he didn't have some of the tools he felt he'd need to get the truck running.  So he ended up going into the main building, found the others talking to Koeler.  There was some tense talking, but they all ended up going up to see Dr. Kempfler.  From there, the scenario ran pretty smoothly with the investigation, with odd bits of creep factor to keep things on edge.

The next little bitch came when they went down into the basement to deal with Grunfeld.  He demanded to be fed, and when the PCs realized that the meat inside was meant for him, they immediately settled into an argument amongst themselves on whether or not they were going to feed him.  This argument turned into inter-party violence, ended up hurting everybody even worse before they were able to calm down.  By this point, they had wasted so much time on the in-fighting that the weather had worsened and night had fallen, and there was no way they were getting out of there without Grunfeld's help, so they ended up feeding him, as well as doing the back and forth between him and Kempfler to get the story of what had gone on at the installation.  They weren't able to do much about the generator room because they had wasted so much time, and the corrupted creatures chose that opportunity to attack.  Since the Army Colonel's player had refused to come back to the table, I simply ruled that he fell victim to the voices, sabotaged the truck, and from there, the rest of the players were stuck dealing with trying to keep the monsters out.  At one point, the grunt decided he'd had enough after Kempfler was going on about his achievements, and put three bullets into his brain - pretty much keeping them from getting into the generator room.  With the monsters beating down the doors to the building and their senses playing hell on them, they ended up accepting Grunfeld's offer of sanctuary, and fled into the ghoul warrens, where they had to stay until the spring thaw.  Of the remaining group, only the archaeologist and the scientist had enough SAN left by Spring to leave.  The others ended up staying with the ghouls, one way or the other.  Grunfeld actually ended up playing a role as a recurring NPC in following CoC games.  I liked him so much I started using him more as a behind-the-scenes mentor-type.  Currently, he's got his eye on a group of investigators who are dealing with a little problem for one Dr. Quigley in Greenfield, MA...

I play tabletop games, but I've been listening to RPPR since before then. My brother told me about RPPR (I'll update in a couple of hours with how he found out about it) and because I've always loved the Cthulhu Mythos I listened to a few of the CoC actual plays, I really enjoyed them so I stuck around.

I was listening to the dark sun AP when Cody started doing the Mul woman's voice in the bar.  Squats + Cody DM = back injury.  Other than working out, I listen while commuting or when doing anything that doesn't require my complete attention at work.

I was familiar with RPGs before the podcast but I had never really played.  A friend sent me a link to the Gaga 2.0 episode due to my desire for her to bare my illegitimate children.

Since listening I've started running/playing a few games.  So I blame RPPR for making me come out of the nerd closet.

I listen to the podcasts through my iPhone at work mostly.  I'm pretty sure my coworkers give me strange looks as I start busting up laughing at all the shenanigans that goes on in the Actual Plays.

Actually, listening to the RPPR Actual Plays is what got me interested in running Call of Cthulhu and Monsters.  Thanks guys! :D

Hey, sorry I missed this...
Yeah, I started with the Penny Arcade podcasts and went searching for more. There were quite a few, but I instantly liked all of you guys the best. You guys are such an awesome mix of characters and you all (as far as I can tell) get along so well. You guys should be so proud of what you're doing! Well, there are plenty of juvenile quips, but I think it's perfect for a giggle and for keeping me thinking about what you're saying as I listen along. And I dig all the pop / nerd culture references.

Trailblazers! That's what you are. I predict this medium will be a hit for everyone, not just RPGers, especially with all the different themes you tackle.

You know that may be true. There's a related new form 'Let's Play' guided walkthroughs of video games. They are getting to be quite popular and some LPers have extremely dedicated fanbases. I find it fascinating that interactive storytelling forms have become linear storytelling forms through APs and LPs.

Yeah, but I think it's the fact that you're witnessing the way a story develops, even though it turns out linearly, and knowing it could have happened differently. There's a creative element that's really important. I like listening to the birthing of ideas and creativity, it really gets my mind going.

I find it fascinating that interactive storytelling forms have become linear storytelling forms through APs and LPs.
This reminds me that I need to get caught up on Let's Play Dungeons and Dragons.

I just saw a topic asking how one found out about RPPR, but it was approximately a year old, and I decided that thread necromancy wasn't something to practice, especially when one is brand new to a forum. So I'm glad to see something like this. :D

Anyhoo, I listen to RPPR while I'm at work. I recently (beginning of Feb) began a security position, where my job is literally to sit in a little shack by a gate and write down license plates while people drive in and out. That's it. So, my first day on the job I downloaded the Listen app for my Android. I actually did a search for "World of Darkness", and I ended up stumbling across the Morality episode of RPPR. After giving it a listen, I found out that I thought Ross and Tom were genius, hilarious, and quite interesting to listen to.

I continue to listen because .. quite simply, they keep me enraptured. The topics they discuss are interesting, and I've heard a lot of ideas on their podcast that never would have come to me otherwise.

Hell, I just bought Monsters and Other childish Things because Ross kept mentioning it, and I've fallen in love with the book so far!

I found RPPR through Google Listen on my Android as well! Good stuff.

I listen to RPPR when I am falling asleep, causing some surreal dreams some times, I can tell you. I also listen to them on my long commutes to university. There is a small, yet vital part of me that dies each time I realize I've run out of RPPR...

I've said this before: I do the same exact thing. Which doesn't turn out well when it's an Eclipse Phase AP and my dreams become weird as shit.

I listen to RPPR any/everywhere that I can use headphones. Not at work, so much, because I have to answer phones, talk to customers, vendors, and so forth. At the gym, at the grocery store (any large store, ally, because what better projects the signal, "leave me the fuck alone" than wearing headphones?), doing cleaning or housework. Lover in the Ice was my companion while I refinished my kitchen walls. Ben Baugh's Candlewick Manor helped me phase in-and-out of sleep on the overnight flight to Paris. Don't Rest Your Head entertained me on the drive from San Antonio to Austin a couple of months ago.
When I was hospitalized last summer, I had a William Gibson novel and my iPod: I listened and re-listened to a LOT of RPPR while trying to sleep, or doped up on painkillers.

Sweet Jesus, what does RPPR sound like on morphine?

My memories are hazy and unreliable, from the combination of drugs and delirium. I remember laughing loudly enough (i don't remember the specific line) that a nurse came to check on me. I think Candle Cove was among the podcasts I listened to, and I can categorically state that narcotics take a lot of the sinister edges off the game, yielding a funhouse-like dreamscape of cheerful pirates and strange puppets.

Been listening to the podcast, AP, Community AP and Unspeakable Oath pretty intensely over the past few weeks whenever I got the chance.  Finally I am basically all caught up after listening mainly while riding the bus to campus and then walking around campus between classes...

Oh, and when I cook and wash dishes, that's a good time too...

My new job has me driving from Shawnee, KS (west side of the Kansas City metro), to Topeka on highway I-70. It's a 50 minute drive, one way. I gets me some RPPR on the road.

I know I'm late to this game, but I am new on this site and fairly new at gaming. I listen to RPPR at work. It's a nice way to ignore my boss so I don't beat the hell out of him for the stupid things he says...for example, if you don't believe that man came from Adam and Eve... you're a racist. So in this respect... i thank you for letting me stay sane enough to not go to jail!

That's a horrendous commute. How do you make it in "50 minutes"? Every time I hit the I-70 / US 5 interchange to head north to St. Joe, I get stuck there for a friggin hour. Granted, I've not driven that trek in a while.
: Re: Where do you listen to RPPR?

RPPR was the prime thing I'd listen to in my previous job where commuting was 3-4 hours a day stuck in the car on top of a 60-70 hour work week. If not for the actual plays I would have gone absolutely insane from that drive in traffic.
: Re: Where do you listen to RPPR?
: attic August 07, 2011, 09:30:13 AM
I mostly listen to RPPR while commuting to and from work and other places (housework tends to fly by when listening to actual plays). I had a job where I was in a carpool and worked in a shop for 13 hours in a day but since I left that one I've been slowly catching up on old actual plays.

RPPR is actually the reason why the table-toper inside of me was reawakened.  Sadly, the few groups I've managed to get together in recent memory have fallen apart due to either drama or lack of participation. RPPR is the only place I can get my fix these days and I'm thankful for it!

I'm a mail carrier and one of the last to deliver out of my own car, so I have an MP3 hookup on my radio. My route is 4 hours long so I listen to RRPR and APRRPR out on my routes. The only challenge is turning down the radio in time to censer Tom's language. Dosn't bother me any but some of my customers get pissy when they hear comments about frog snatch.

While driving back and forth to work - I have a 30 minute commute and often get burned out on NPR or the local morning deejays.

While doing dishes - no, we don't have a dishwasher.  Can you guess I might be a Grognard?

Falling asleep at night.  Nothing puts me to sleep like the soothing sounds of Ross's endless stream of GM blather.

In a good way. RPPR is the insomnia cure. Either you fall asleep because it's soothing, or you stay awake anyway and have something entertaining to listen to.

Thanks to this new App I can listen to RPPR on my phone.

My phone is always with me, even in the movie theatre.

When I'm stuck in a queue I boot up RPPR, doing laundry- RPPR, taking a work dodging dump- RPPR.

I used to have an annoying girlfriend, but since I started listening to RPPR instead of her, I don't see her anymore.

Thanks RPPR. Entertainment for life.

Hay Everyone,

I listen to RPPR, the podcast and the AP way, back and forth to work.  I am a Paramedic / Firefighter in a local rural county.  I travail about and hour each way.  I also work 24 hour shifts on what we call a 9 day cycle. I work about 3 out of 9 days with a 4 day break every cycle. I also listen to RPPR during down time at the fire station when I am on shift. Love listening to you guys keep up the good work.

I mainly listen during my commute to and from work but also on my lunch hour.  I talk on a phone for 8 hours a day so plugging in some headphones and listening to other people talk without having to respond is a really nice break.  I've been using SPlayer for Android on a Galaxy tablet.

I'd rate it a solid 'N'bad'.

Pros:
Saves your pause position
Allows you to use other apps while still listening
Easy playlist editing/creation

Cons:
If you lose or gain internet connectivity, it may stop and revert to the last pause position
Adjusting playback position (To, say, correct the above) is cumbersome and not very accurate

I do merchandising for a big box company, and I listen to RPPR in the mornings before the stores open. I also listen on the way to and from work during my 30+ minute commutes.

I happened to find RPPR on Pocket Cast, my Android podcast app. I had previously been listening to music, but had migrated to trying out tech/ android podcasts. On one fateful day, I tried searching for a D&D podcast in the app and RPPR was one of the only ones to pop up. I was drawn in by the icon art, and have been enjoying it since.

Thank you Ross, Tom, and all the rest for entertainment during setting up computers, car radios, TVs and the rest.

Time to pop the post cherry.

Hey folks. I first found out about RPPR because I was looking around for 4e actual play podcasts. Still haven't finished the New World campaign, as it is. I'm fairly new to the hobby, though I've been wanting to get into it for quite some time now. What made me stick around though were the CoC actual plays, which were my first experiences with the game. It was right after listening to the Haunting session that I went out and bought the Chaosium book. I had a similar experience with the Gaga 2.0 game, but I digress.

Actual plays were my constant companion on morning runs, and I have formed a somewhat unhealthy attachment to your voices. I only very recently started listening to the RPPR episodes themselves, which makes the lengthy bike ride to the university all the more enjoyable. As well as educational, game-wise. So before you guys go the way of John Candy, I wanted to thank you for the hours of entertainment.
