: GenCon 2012
: Tadanori Oyama January 16, 2012, 02:24:10 PM
I know most people aren't going to need this notice but for any first timers or individual even considering coming to GenCon this year a very important date is coming up.

January 29th is Badge Registration, which isn't a huge deal, badges don't sell out right away, but it is required for the more important part: hotel registration.

Janurary 31st is the opening for hotel registration. For anyone who wants to stay on-site for GenCon and not travel to and from by shuttle or car this day is critical. The hotels closest to the Event Center tend to book up very quickly.

So if you want to stay at a connected hotel, better make sure you can be at your computer, ready to book a room on the morning of the 31st (It's a Tuesday, by the way). You need to have registered for a badge to make use of the GenCon hotel bookng system and get the discounted group rate for the Con.

This is certainly helpful, I'm still a GenCon newb here.  I want to make sure I actually get booked in the hotel this time.  Appreciate the post Tadanori!

Is there running any games this year.  That was something I'm thinking of trying out.

no one is running anything ever again

Well if you're planning to run games, you may want to take the route I did last year and try for a GM's badge.  You'll have to sign up to run three games with six players each, but the benefits are definitely worth it.  For me, getting my free badge, receiving my Arc Dream freebies (since I ran for them) and getting play-test my NIMH scenario made for a great experience.

I'm going for this this year, adding a third ArcDream game to my planned events. "Free" stuff is awesome and it gives me an excuse to bug Shane Ivy, Greg Stoltz, and Scott Glancy.

Is it better to spend a bunch of money to get a close hotel, or save money and and add some distance to the con?
: Re: GenCon 2012
: Tadanori Oyama January 31, 2012, 04:46:12 PM
You will save money at a farther hotel.

Generally their between 70 and 100 dollars less per day so on a four day trip you pay 280 to 400 dollars less. There are parking concerns, of a sort, but I think most hotels in the GenCon block to shuttles at set times back and forth.

I stay closer because I fly in and don't have a vehicle. Plus you get to control where you go and when a little better, plus just being closer to all of the action. I can run to my room and back anytime to drop stuff off or pick up things.

If you haven't been before than I suggest a distant hotel. You'll save money and if it turns out you don't like the Con you didn't throw as much cash into it. If you enjoy it (like I did my first year) from a distant hotel then you'll love it from a close one.

Speaking of, got my room. At the Marriott Downtown, same as last year. Good times.

: AmishNinja February 01, 2012, 12:14:23 PM
Snagged a room at Embassy Suites. Gonna be expensive unless we get at least two more people to pile into the room with us but I'm not too worried about it. Can't be afraid to spend a little money on a vacation. :)
: Re: GenCon 2012
: Tadanori Oyama February 01, 2012, 04:05:37 PM
Embassy Suites has cool surroundings in the hotel (and great connection to the mall), it's too far from the exhibit hall for me though.

I'm sticking my brother with part of the bill this year since I'm going to be flying out instead of driving this time. He came for "free" last year. Might try to rope some other people in locally if I can too.

I'll be running games with ArcDream. I'm thinking a fantasy game using Reign and doubling up on a superhero game using Wild Talents.
: Re: GenCon 2012
: Shallazar February 08, 2012, 09:58:48 AM
Well I'm in the Sheraton again. I didn't think I'd get to stay in the same hotel again but I guess I'm racking up the starwood points or something.

Looking forward to this year and junk. OH YEAHH!!

I got this idea after last year's podcast wrap up. RPPR True Dungeon. Admittedly, getting all one time slot is difficult. But if other people want to coordinate, we can choose times and try for it. Maybe some PM action is required.

Hey Ross, can I assume we're keeping the RPPR meet-up on Thursday again this year? I need to set up my games for ArcDream and I don't want any conflicts.

Sweet, then I can run my stuff Friday and Saturday and make Thursday my wandering stupidly day.

For those interested, I'm running four games at GenCon this year for ArcDream. I don't know when they'll be scheduled exactly, but I'll post the descriptions here. The three using Nemesis are the horror adventures Ean and I will be releasing in the kickstarter that will go up in a few months. I'll also be running "The Dangers of Fraternization" again, the same A Dirty World scenario I ran last year.

Bryson Springs

System: Nemesis
Number of players: 6 players

In June of 1935, the Dust Bowl still plagued the American Southwest, a third of all people were out of work, and the government’s path to recovery was far from certain. Amidst this Great Depression, the Bryson Springs Ranch suffered a hardship altogether more extraordinary. People were dying in the migrant workers’ shantytown, dying in horrific, mind-boggling ways.

Players take the roles of strangers, cast about by the hard times and drawn into the nightmare that is Bryson Springs. They must band together to confront the things which stalk the desert night, hunting the downtrodden for their dark and blasphemous god.

The Red Tower

System: Nemesis
Number of players: 6 players

1931, Chicago: Capone’s reign has ended, and it remains to be seen how much of Chicago’s corrupt infrastructure will be dragged down with him. As two-bit criminals scramble to establish themselves in the power vacuum, the exposed corruption presents an opportunity for muckraking socialists to provoke the downtrodden into revolution. Meanwhile, the government must intervene to stop the commies and audit the more legitimate business holdings listed in Capone’s infamous ledger. Despite their cross purposes, each faction finds itself stymied by an unknown forces. The mobsters are missing a Capo who was never swept up in the raids. A socialist reporter has never returned from his undercover assignment. The government has to contend with a huge factory which, according to records, shouldn’t exist.

What mysteries does the Red Tower hold? Can the players put their social differences aside long enough to survive the supernatural cancer secretly festering in the heart of Chicago’s meat-packing district?

The Fall Without End

System: Nemesis
Number of players: 6 players

1931, Alaska: As America comes to grips with the real cost of Black Tuesday, the government becomes desperate to find distractions for an increasingly rebellious population stirred by endless woes. As proven by Charles Lindbergh, the people love nothing more than heroes capable of great deeds, and the government is willing to buy itself some at any price. Alaska’s Mount McKinley, the third tallest in the world, is the setting for the publicity stunt, and players will take the role of the brave explorers risking their lives for the photo op.

But the mountain is far older than any human civilization and home to terrors far worse than any economic recession. As players struggle up the infamous Wickersham Wall, will they be able to survive the combined onslaught of the elements, gravity, and vertiginous horrors from another reality?

The Dangers of Fraternization

System: A Dirty World
Number of Players: 4-6

Berlin, 1946. The once mighty city lies in ruins, controlled jointly by powers that are Allies in name only. Identical mother-infant
murders take place on either side of the Russian-American border, and now a third newborn has gone missing. Soviet NKVD and the U.S. Army military police launch a joint effort to find the killer, centered around a burlesque club that’s a hot spot for the resurgent German underworld. In danger of losing their investment, the crime bosses of Berlin suddenly find themselves as eager to find the murderer as their occupiers. Can this hasty alliance find justice, or will it implode under the weight of national intrigue, old grudges and human greed?

In the same vein, here are the games I will be running this year:

1x Game of MAOCT: The Legacy of NIMH: (The game I ran at last years Gencon).

Description:  All is not well with the Rats of NIMH.  A specter from their past threatens the rats new home in Thorn Valley.  Now a group of young rats, following the trail of their lost leader, must travel back to their old home in order to stop an evil that threatens to consume them all.
Total Players: 6

2x Games of MAOCT: The Junkyard on the Edge of Forever:

Description:  The school year has finally ended for the children of Sagan Lane Elementary,  but their homework this summer is just starting.  The kids monster friends are starting to disappear one by one, leaving with little reason or warning.  Rumors point towards a junkyard that seems to have power over their supernatural buddies.  Now the kids must discover why the monsters are vanishing or risk losing their best friends forever!
Total Players: 6

: Tadanori Oyama March 26, 2012, 07:03:46 PM
I'll be going for that Junkyard game, Aaron. What kind of format is that going to be in? Kid + Monster; play a Kid only; play a Kir or a Monsters; how's it going to break down?

It will be using both kids and monsters. I wanted to do a more base-line game since I kind of bent the rules around for NIMH. I will have pre-gens available, but since I know you're signing up feel free to make your own if you like.
: Re: GenCon 2012
: Tadanori Oyama March 27, 2012, 11:09:55 AM
If I get into the game I'll be sure to come with a ready made monster.

And as a general reminder to everyone Event Registration is May 20th beginning at Noon, eastern time (9 am for us West Coasters), so mark it down on your calender. If they do the same thing they did last year you'll be able to build a wishlist ahead of time and then submit it right at the start time, which I suggest everyone do since stuff fills up fast.
: Re: GenCon 2012
: AmishNinja March 28, 2012, 02:59:36 PM
Hope you don't get a clueless shaman for LoN this time Aaron! Everyone else: definitely sign up for Aaron's Legacy of NIMH game if you're thinking about it because it is amazing.

Caleb: just to be totally clear, is your Bryson Springs an 'aftermath' scenario based on the AP you ran for RPPR?
: Re: GenCon 2012

: Re: GenCon 2012

The Bryson Springs isn't an aftermath. I'm just running the scenario to promote the kickstarter. The Fall Without Ending and The Red Tower are in the same vein though. Both have new monsters and are set in the 1930's.

I'll probably try to record my games this year if the equipment isn't being used during my slot. I hope to see everyone there.

126 Days left. Sorry I just got nervous and distracted.

Anyone looking forward to events that they may have missed last year?
Also, I wanted to play in a pickup RPG but never got the chance/balls to.
I'd be down for running something on Wednesday night for shits and grins.

I know I'm going to try and play more board games and actually attend one of the 7am lectures.
: Re: GenCon 2012
: Tadanori Oyama April 11, 2012, 11:38:56 AM
I want to go to more of the studio forums, get the chance to look upon the face of the guys who create my games. Expecially want to go to the Post-Human Studios gathering as well as hitting ArcDream/Pagan/Delta Green, however they break it down. If WildFire is gonna be there I need to get updated with them too.

I'm up for a game Wednesday night. Where do you want to meet up Shallazar? Thanks to last year I know who to look for.
: Re: GenCon 2012

So...I am an idiot. I banked on my school board not being idiots and GenCon being held around roughly the same time.

My board just sent next years approved calendar. My first day with students is the 16th. I'll have to work all through GenCon, and there is absolutely no way out of it.

Fuck...

YAh. Nope. Screwed out of soo many good games. I guess this means I have to run something next year and be a GM hero.

Tad and I were thinking about a pick-up game during the Con some time. Dunno what I'll run, maybe some gumshoe since I won't be playing any at all at GenCon otherwise.

: motorbreathjazz May 27, 2012, 03:36:37 PM
Missed out on one Monsters game I wanted to play but other than that got every thing I wanted. I tend to play lesser known games I never get to play otherwise so it's not hard to get tickets for most of them. Monsters sold out rather quickly though.
: Re: GenCon 2012

I got nothing. Going to have to load up on generics and stalk stables waiting for no shows. Too bad too, I only wanted to play Eclipse Phase stuff this year, as far as booked games.
: Re: GenCon 2012
: ThnJonWasAZmbie June 16, 2012, 09:40:47 PM

: Re: GenCon 2012
: Tadanori Oyama June 17, 2012, 01:20:13 AM
Yeah, there's a lot to do. If you buy some generics you can also wander around and have a good chance of sliding into a game because often they don't totally fill up (some games will even take extra).

: Re: GenCon 2012

You go out the Noth-Eastern corner of the convention hall into the parking complex it conjoins and use the skybridge to get into the Hyatt.

From there you go down the stairs, into the lobby, and out the North-East corner entrance. Cross the street heading North, then turn back West and look for a narrow, tall opening in the buildings with a long brick path of stairs. That's the entrance into Embassy Suites.

Follow the brick path up the entry road to the front doors then take the escalator directly ahead of you up to the lobby and then back your way to the restaurants area (not the dimly lit bar). You should see alot of people and mixed into them will be a few with RPPR buttons. If Aaron or I have arrived you'll see one or two big dudes in hawaiian shirts.

I'm going to try to have a sign of some kind as well.

If you think you'll have trouble finding it make sure to pick up a guide (they'll be laying around the Con after a few hours) because that'll have more maps in it.

Also, if you think you'll be especially confused I'll be happy to meet you, personally, at something closer to the main hall and show you the way over myself.

Two things:

1. I'm going to liveblog Gencon on slangdesign.com - kinda like how I did with China. Fortunately there's no great Firewall so I'll be able to upload video as well as pics. This should include the trip to and back from the con as well.

2. I will have the video camera and I have an idea to get a series of short videos from game designers - ask each one to come up with an elevator pitch for their version of a tabletop RPG of the Oregon Trail. The pitch has to be at most 2 minutes. I'll shoot those with the HD camera so I'll post them on the RPPR podcast youtube channel after Gencon.
