I'm considering setting up on Patreon - http://www.patreon.com/
The basic idea is you subscribe to a given content provider (like a podcast) and in exchange for that, you get exclusive content. The content provider also sets up milestones so that if X amount of cash is raised per month, then content Y is released to backers.
Right now I'm trying to think of things I could create for Patreon that wouldn't interfere too much with my existing work. The B-Sides/old APs will probably stay separate -. Not 100% committed on that though.
Possible bonuses so far:
A bonus podcast - probably a fan fiction or RPG text reading (like more rules from Synnibar, Phoenix Command, etc) - something relatively short and humorous
A flash fiction (1000 words or less) set in a RPPR AP game - get some behind the scenes insight into your favorite games.
Book reviews of gaming related books or discussion with Caleb on gaming-related books/novels etc
Other ideas?
Milestones could include
A webcomic series of incidents/stories related to various APs
Skype games run by me for Backers - the top backers play and others can listen live or download the AP
Skype Q/A sessions with Tom and I - get advice on your campaign, etc.
Other milestones you'd like to see?
-
I guess this thing works; everyone I follow on the net has been signing up with it lately.
Well I'm definitally in.
I'd like to see RPG opinions as bonus content. Have somebody in the RPPR crew talk about a given RPG for awhile. Say what they like and what they don't and if they recommend it or not. Might want to specialize in that: give Tom action games, Caleb spy games, Ross horrible monster games, etc. You know, what their good at.
-
I'm going to propose Milestones that needs a lot of thought as it is possibly fraught with problems.
But here it is anyway. As a milestone let the patrons decide what one shot gets played. Bigger milestone could be a mini campaign. Don't give them options, let them pick a game by vote among themselves. For obvious reasons RPPR would have a veto right.
P.S. Take my money!
-
Basically we'd be outsourcing RPPR. I can dig it. ;D
Yup, this would get my dollar.
-
I think the Skype games is a good idea. Maybe allow backers to create/receive one - page adventure seeds based on RPPR material.
The biggest reward: the highest backer gets to be a guest on the RPPR main podcast.
I'm in if you decide to do this.
Quick question: would this replace your current subscription service, or be used in addition to it?
-
The Skype game has the most interest for me personally.
-
Skype games seem to be a big hit. I think games run by one of the RPPR guys would be cool, and as a higher level maybe a skype game with some of the crew? A live cast of a game could be interesting, so high-end backers get access to that and the mid-range get early access to the mp3 of it before it goes to the regular AP site. I think getting the guys, mainly Caleb, to do dramatic readings of obtuse RPG rules would be a riot. Just imagine a slight orchestral backing as Caleb and Tom try to read rules from Synnibar and Rifts.
Personally, I'd think it'd be really dope to get some RPPR merch, either as Patreon rewards or just as regular store stuff. The KC Green banners emblazoned on shirts and mugs would be great, along with posters, buttons, stickers, hell, even calenders could work. Stuff with original art from campaigns or Base Raiders would be cool, too. Though, I'm not sure what sort of legal issues might be involved with some stuff, like Know Evil/Tribes of Tokyo merch. Something to keep in mind at least.
-
$2/month
Our thanks and an exclusive flash fiction based on one of our AP episodes.
$5/month
RPPR After Hours
A loose comedic podcast - readings from RPG books, brain storm ideas for scenario seeds using this site for inspiration http://kaction.com/ and so forth
$250/month milestone - Skype one shot for the 4 highest backers that month
-
Access to GM notes on game scenarios that RPPR created. So monster stats, plott diagrams, what's really going on write up, pregens and NPCs.
EDIT: Only the stuff that is not getting published through other means of course.
Also copies of PC sheets from different games.
-
Let's get down to brass tacks shall we. How much for Tom Church?
-
20 camels and an extra goat for the feast.
-
Check here. (http://www.howmanygoats.com/) My guess is five goats.
-
I'd be down for 5$ a month. Always felt a bit dirty getting so much great content for free, so I'm all for this.
-
Book reviews or discussion about gaming related things with Caleb (and/or Tom) would be cool. I enjoyed when you guys reviewed those really terrible adventures (AUTODUEL!) so would be cool to hear thoughts on actual good adventures. I like the actual plays but more stuff for the regular podcast would be even better.
-
I presume an episode like RPPR Episode 95: Historical Histronics with Adam Scott Glancy wasn't hard to produce.
I would like more of those sort of chats as extras with Glancy or other interesting individuals.
EDIT:
I also like the RPPR after hours idea.
EDIT 2:
About the '$250/month milestone - Skype one shot for the 4 highest backers that month'
You realise you are only incentivizing the top 4 people to reach the milestone.
To put it in game theory terms, it's a zero sum game with 4 winners and everyone else looses. It might create the effect that lower backer would choose not to play at all.
-
Oh I forgot to mention that the Skype game will be recorded and shared as a backer only AP. So everyone wins.
-
You might do a lottery with everyone over x donation level gets entered into a chance for the Skype game. Solves the game theory problem and stops people from just buying there way on at the last minute. Of course then you need to run a lottery and deal with the fallout but it does solve some of the problems.
My wife tells me I have a face for radio so I think this skill translates to skype.
Not that I have done this but people seem to think Google Hangouts work better than skype games.
-
I like the idea of getting the precon characters and GM notes after the AP.
I wouldn't be in the running for a 250$ donation for the long run, let alone each month. But yeah a skype or hangouts game would be a great reward. I played on Hangouts and Skype and both worked. Skype is more open because it does not force someone into a social network but Hangouts has the better tools.

The milestones are totals - so if all the backers combined donate a total of $250 a month, then I run a skype game and share the AP with all backers.
-
I'm interested in the AP flash fiction, Webcomic, after hours/ASG Historonics, and or Skype games that have been suggested so far.
-
That sounds more realistic then :)
And gives me a chance to possibly get in some day.

I'd pay to be in this lottery.
-
I'd definitely pay.
-
I'm more than happy to pay, it's the least I can do.
-
Pay a certain amount and you get to pick the next game the RPPR crew plays.
Muuhhaaa
-
I would pay and gladly enter the Skype-game lottery/pay for a Skype-game backer reward.
I also support the idea of a limited number of high-level backer rewards permitting backers to pick a game to be played by the crew.
-
I also support the idea of a limited number of high-level backer rewards permitting backers to pick a game to be played by the crew.
I think that it might be a bad move as the RPPR crew might end up having to play a game they find boring. I think that would end up rubbing everyone the wrong way. Both RPPR and the listeners.

I think that's a fair concern. Maybe Ross & co. could put together a list and allow certain backers to choose the next one shot from that list.
-
Also, more Carcosa.
-
Yesyesyesyesss... More Carcosa!
-
I have basically decided to make 2 architectural horror themed games at this point. One is going to be explicitly Carcosa/Hastur themed while the other is going to be more open-ended.
-
Two games for the low low price of sanity.
-
If we pledge enough can we get Caleb's Nights Black Agents game going? I want to hear that.

This! Motherfucking this!
You guys should look at Evil Hat's Fate Patreon -> http://www.patreon.com/evilhat
They are creating adventures and settings but what they have is a paragraph for each "pitch". So what you guys can do is say, have Ross, Tom & Caleb (I'm not sure if anyone else GMs) pitch a game. Single paragraph, what the system is, the set up etc. Of course, these should be approved first by the group (People have to want to play in it). Then you throw them up on the Patreon, the backers vote for which one they would like to see first and that one is thrown to the top of the queue.
Now if you do decide to do something like that. The #1 thing that I would like to see is that whatever actual play gets voted on and starts up, the recordings for it be given top priority so they come out relatively in sync with when the campaign is being played. My impression is that often, there is a huge backlog of recordings (this is a good thing!) but in the main podcast or other APs we hear you guys sometimes talk about games that haven't come out yet.
I could be wrong about the sync thing, but it'd be nice to be relatively current with you guys with the Patreon games. Just a thought.
-
I'd pay to see Caleb to a NBA game but I think it might kill the RPPR players or worse they might play it half-heartedly. Maybe they could use the money to hire mystery writers to play in it.
-
I think if you set it up so that we could submit and vote (with number of votes based on amount pledged) on ideas when building a Base Raiders base you would then run the rppr crew through... that would be awesome.
-
I think as an addition to the Skype game reward, having the Skype games act as side stories or Annuals for a current ongoing RPPR campaign that could effect it. Could be interesting.
-
Crazy random thought, but would various RPPR text alert/ringtones be a thing? I can think of a few that might be fun already.
Ross "Wwwwwizaaaard!"
David "Grrrrackle Cannon!"
Caleb "Deathtrap is singular, and therefore incorrect."
Aaron "You seem trustworthy!"
Ross "There's monsters in the school, Tom."
What do you guys think? Would it be worthwhile?
-
Mr. Purple: Yes.
-
I'd pay for some more organization and some resolution to existing campaigns (cough Vault 26 cough). :)
I love the podcast and would like to see some continuations of existing content along with some general organization of next/previous/playlist for each campaign. Maybe a wiki type setup? You guys have a whole bunch of awesome content but it can be a struggle to sort through everything.

I'd be in favor of this, too. A cast/player profile section with what characters they've played in campaigns, one-shots might a bit much, and some memorable quotes.
-
Yeah, I really like that idea, too.
-
*snipped*
Ross "There's monsters in the school, Tom."
What do you guys think? Would it be worthwhile?
More like:
Ross: "Clearly, I am a horrible monster."
Yeah, something like that, David. Ringtone/chirp recording from each of the RPPR crew with their favorite/tag line.

I could set up campaign pages for existing campaigns. All campaigns do have unique tags and the related episodes links usually connect to the right ones, but I can see how it is not immediately apparent.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that the site is unorganized now. I actually think it does an excellent job of linking similar content. I've gradually been working my way through all of the (awesome) content in an organized manner depending on my mood. Several times I've left off and not been sure if any continuations are either a) not uploaded yet b) exists but I'm blindly incapable of finding it (most likely) or c) on hiatus. I'd mentioned Vault 26 specifically since it falls into the last category (unless I'm really blind).
I was just thinking of more ways to help in monetizing the site. I'll gladly keep supporting it.
-
No worries. Right now, we need more support of the Boiling Point Kickstarter. Spread the word! :D
-
I've been aiming on picking up a copy for Base Raiders for a while. The Boiling Point kickstarter seems like a perfect opportunity to do both.
-
Hey Ross, as a backer of Boiling Point, I was trying to download the second part of the RPPR play, without success. Was it just an unlucky bug or do you have other people reporting similar issue ?
-
The link in the email sent out by Kickstarter was incorrect. If you go to the actual update on Kickstarter, it has the right link. I'll PM you the link anyway.
-
Is the Patreon still a thing that is happening? I'm sure Ross has been plenty busy with Boiling Point and freelance work for, like, everybody it seems, but not much has been said in a while, so I was curious.
-
Oh yeah for sure. I think I'll get the next B-Sides up first, then launch Patreon around January.
-
Awesome! It'll be a pleasure to give you money on a regular basis. I can't wait for those B-Sides too, if not for the somewhat selfish reason of hearing myself in games run by you and Caleb. I'm sure the other session will be just as entertaining if not moreso.
-
To honor the RPPR Patreon going live I drew a thing!
