: Question about Future New World Supplements
: Setherick November 12, 2009, 09:45:08 PM
Ross and I have been kicking around ideas about what kinds of future New World supplements we would want to write as soon as my PhD preliminary exams are over. So far we've been discussing doing a Revolution/War for Independence supplement. I've also suggested maybe doing a Utopian supplement (those of you readers out there might realize that More's eponymous text was inspired by exploration of North and South America) and maybe a Post-Revolution/War for Independence supplement that focused on bards and nationalism.

But I wanted to hear from what you guys would like to see. What kind of supplement would be of interest? What would you use in your own campaigns?

Well, there's whole Cortez/heart of darkness plotline I used for the paragon tier. Players had to face down a fallen paladin who took over quite a few tribes through fanaticism and force of arms.

Thanks Ross, I completely forgot about that. And I'm the one that originally came up with that character. :D

I quite enjoy war settings, especially older styled ones where battles are fought over wide range with little communication. The slower pace of an "old" war lends itself well to turn based gaming.

Plus, you get to be involved in diplomancy and the political elements of the war when you play table top.

Perhaps the next suppliment could be dealing with Cortez and all the shit you have to go through for that? I mean, that was the biggest portion of paragon tier.

If you are still drawing from American history as an influence, I suggest that writing an arc based on the Civil War might prove interesting. Considering first and foremost that this is fantasy, you could force players to face the question of slavery directly and dynamically; in RPPR's actual play, although the topic has been addressed lightly in the past, it has always been the business of private enterprises and the colony as a whole does not seem to have an official standing (unless I missed something, i.e.).

The supplement could very well play into separating the party into sides as a specific mechanic. Whatever the case, you have the ethical argument and politics as RP fodder and, on the other hand, the war itself as the stage for encounters.

Just a thought, anyway.

I like the moral problems with dealing with slavery, but really from American history race relations during the Revolutionary War were much more interesting, especially in the American South. I'm currently reading Slave Nation (http://books.google.com/books?id=BjM5RK9vi98C&dq=Slave+Nation&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=WgkGS53sF5HSMvjG2bEK&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CBUQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=&f=false), which makes the argument that the consolidation of the colonies that led to the Revolutionary War itself was a direct result of the Somerset case in England that was instrumental in making slavery illegal on the isles. Southern plantation owners were concerned that these juridical changes would affect slavery laws in England's colonies. Moreover, during the Revolutionary War, England's actions regarding Southern slaves are even more interesting.

Anyway, Cortez will def be the focus of the next New World PDF. Question: how important is the 4E specific stuff? I've gotten some feedback on the primer and the hulk but not one word pertaining to the 4e monster stats - good or bad. If no one uses them or really enjoys them, then that frees me up to focus on writing more fluff/systems neutral material.

personally, I play 3.5 New World. I dont really care about the 4E stuff. I dont mind, but I dont care.

on a separate note, how many sessions of the actual campaign have you played so far? And do you plan to play to level 30? I'm curious to know

I like the 4E stuff. I can't use most of it in my current Epic Tier campaign, I do plan to use it when I get them back down to heroic and paragon.

Around 30 sessions - I'm not 100% sure of how many because I suck at remembering things.

We will go to level 30 but once we finish paragon tier plotline we will jump from level 16 to level 21.

You'll love Epic Tier, Ross. You get to kill your PCs once a day and they get back up so you can do it again the next day.

I "total party wiped" my Epic Tier players in a fight with one big blast from a dragon (I mean not 100% to dead, they'd been beaten up alot before getting to the dragon), and then they all got back up and won the encounter. One of them died a second time, but the Cleric poured a potion down her throat so she got better.

Just finished paragon tier tonight. It had a pretty impressive ending. We will take a few weeks off from the new world - run some other stuff and then on to epic tier.

AP 14 is up, i can't remember if i listened to that already,

Was that one of the ones we got as a pre-download when we donated?
: Re: Question about Future New World Supplements
: clockworkjoe November 24, 2009, 02:02:40 PM
No. I've already uploaded all of the AP episodes that were available as a preview for ransom donors.

The donor previews stopped at 12, the end of heroic tier when they wrecked the thieves' guild.

Ah awesome.  Then i will start listening to 13 tonight.   I forgot about New world for a while there, they were few and far between

Did she get turned into a newt?

No, they resisted that effect, but I did try.

Could we get a supplement like say 'Scum and Villany"ish?   Like all the merchants/criminal/undead types running in and around the colony?

Vampire gangs, profit with a bite
Axgore, how to make friends and influence people
The Thieves Guild...the third oldest tradition in the worlds
Ladies and Gents of the Night....spreading the love
Unions....Hey forget about it!
Belgran the Fat "yes yes yes yes yes"
The Grippili Adventuring Inc "Thats awesome! Its a shinny lever!"
The Water Barons "You're a jerk!  We won't work for you."

hooks and encounter ideas?

stuff like that?

: Re: Question about Future New World Supplements

Next one is focused around Cortez but I can throw in some of that stuff. I've realized now that my biggest problem with them is writing the stat and mechanical stuff but response for that has been flat soo not going to worry about that too much.

Speaking of that, are you guys ready for another ransom? You hungry to read about how to run a war between a hostile native tribe and the colony?
: Re: Question about Future New World Supplements
: beej January 08, 2010, 04:49:09 PM
Could you type up all your notes for all the episodes?   That would be a good series of ransoms.  : )

Let's also not forget that eventually colonists will revolt. Surely, we wouldn't have a ransom about that either.  8)

Didn't he/you (Ross) say at one point (at least about one session) that a lot was just improvised?

Maybe I just imagined that...

Yeah but I'm not above grovelling at Ross's alter and heaping blood money on it for whatever game scraps he's willing to toss down to the peasantry.

I do have a lot of notes actually - keeping track of every damn named NPC and plot-line plus in session 18 I actually wrote up the sewers as a full on dungeon.

However, I like writing about the new world - the goblin hulk was a lot of fun and if you notice, when the hulk was actually in the game, very little of the stuff in the PDF was in the game - I ran it first, then expanded on it for the PDF. Think of the PDFs as directors cut where I add in a bunch of shit you didn't see the first time around

Yeah, I guess I was thinking more about PDFs being released about adventures, rather than the general campaign rules and information.

Like a New World Adventure Path?
: Re: Question about Future New World Supplements

Im sure ross has a path that he plans on leading, but something tells me that this path looks worse then a LA turn pike during construction at 5 pm.
: Re: Question about Future New World Supplements
: clockworkjoe January 09, 2010, 01:02:08 AM
The problem with adventures is that they involve a lot of stats and maps. That's really time consuming and tedious. Oh and you have to pick a system. And a level range. And conversion is even more time consuming and difficult. Think about how different battle maps have to be in 4E than 3E. There's a lot more movement in 4E for instance.

Of course, If I had more feedback on the first two PDFs, then that would help. What do you use - what don't you use and why or why not?
