: DORF FORT
: Sean-o-tron November 14, 2009, 04:23:40 AM
On a recent episode of the Podge Cast, one of the hosts, Luc, mentioned he started to play Dwarf Fortress recently.  I almost did a double-take at my mp3 player, like "isn't that the game that Ross...?"

So I just NOW got around to listening to the excellent interview Ross did with Tarn Adams, creator of Dwarf Fortress (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/2008/05/interview/rppr-interview-with-tarn-adams-creator-of-dwarf-fortress/), as well as reading all of the hilarity that is Boatmurdered (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/).

Point is, I'm itching to play it (found an awesome tileset and everything 8))  , so can anyone point me in a good direction to start, tutorial/How-To-wise?

40-part tutorial ftw!  That's it, thread's over.  Everyone can take their internets and go home.

dwarf fortress fans are crazy. One even transcribed the entire RPPR interview and made little snide comments while doing so. It's over 15,000 words I think altogether.

Yikes!  That's... weird.

DF is turning out to be incredibly fun, thanks to those tutorials.  However, my dwarves are slowly running out of rations because I don't know how to effectively farm or, you know, provide any sort of sustenance for them yet.  I'm only halfway through the first year, but I fear The Arches of Lightning will not last long at Outpost Oceanships.

Would anyone be interested in playing a succession-style game?  Everyone would take a turn running the fortress for a year in-game or for a week real-time (whichever comes first), then ship it off to the next person.  I know I'd probably fuck everything up, but it would fun as hell!

After playing a few diffrent forts I think im ready for this. Lets do it! I am reading Boatmurderd right now and love the way they have it set up. Sounds like fun. if we get enough people to do it we should make a big thread in the Role-playing thread and have our own little "boatmurder" story going. Let me know when you wanna start it up.

I played dwarf fortress probably a year ago.  Its a really crazy game  On top of the castle building thing, theres a rogue-like you can play and visit your old fortresses.  Apparently the rogue-like has an intensely complex and deep grappling system, that I never got to try because I always get killed by a dog or something.

So I downloaded and started up a new fort in the newest version, Not sure I like the embark screen as much, took a lot of the options out such as Underground water, magma vents/pipes, chasams, and Other. The new Farming system is prety cool have to have water now took me a while to figure that out. I like theres ablitys to make hospitals but sadly most of it is broken from what I read on the wiki, lot of the jobs dont do what there supposed to do, but still fun!

Cruising for good Dwarf Fortress stories I found this one. Short and sweet, it's one of my new favorites:
Whats a fair response for a dwarf not following a noble’s construction order? A few days in prison? A couple of lashes?

Bear in mind please that the noble was asking for clear glass crafts. I don’t have any sand on the map. No sand= no glass. It’s an impossible order. You’d think that the sherrif would take that into account, right?

My hammerer decided a fair price would be to track down the only dwarf (an immigrant) with glass making skill, and mangle both of his legs. Not just break- mangle. As in, he’ll never walk again. Or wank- both of his wrists were also broken.

My hammerer now has the thoughts: He lives to enforce dwarfven justice. He has been estatic recently. He has beaten someone with a hammer recently.

Edit: “Punchbag” the hammered was lying on the floor of the jail, unconcious. Until of course another dwarf came in (after tantruming due to the death of his freind and punching a marksdwarf in his squad). This dwarf then had a tantrum about being confined, and started beating Punchbag in the face, while he was still out cold. So the guards came and beat both of them for fighting.

Yeah, I'm sad to see the vents and chasms go, but the new underground makes up for it with awesome.

Was playing DF today. First encounter with a Forgotten Beast(Basically randomly generated monsters).

It was a giant tarantula with venomous spittle.

It slaughtered my inexperienced squad of dwarf soldiers, then my commander, Lord-Captain Urvash, slaughtered the beast in a few seconds.

In all I lost 6 dwarves (4 military and 2 civilian) a war giant eagle, and a war mandrill.

This is one of the most comprehensive and prettiest tilesets I've seen and it's the one I use.  The download has it pre-installed to DF (0.31.06, the current version), so all you have to do is download it and start playing.

: Re: DORF FORT
: doctorscraps June 12, 2010, 10:04:48 AM
I usually play in forested areas for the wood, plus that seems to be the newbie area until I actually learn the f-in' control scheme better.

So one fortress had this large resevoir of water in the water off the to side adjacent to where the fort entrance was. Just for shits and giggles, I had a dude dig a tunnel into it from the outside to see what would happen. The water pressure rockets him across the field, and the valley gets flooded for many days until the resevoir empties, full of dead fish and muddy soil.
Many farm animals got wet feet that day...
: Re: DORF FORT

My surgeon was just operating on a veteran when something went horribly wrong and blood sprayed all over the hospital walls.

Experienced sword dwarf was fighting a goblin at the very top of my grand staircase. He dodged off the side, and fell. All. The. Way. To. The. Bottom. It took 5 actual seconds for him to land and splatter everywhere. I found his head resting on a bridge 10 z levels above the rest of his remains. The goblins have managed to secure a large part of my fortress. My chief historian and his aide along with a planter have barricaded themselves in my dining room/ food storage area. They should uphold the legacy of my fortress until some migrants come.

I love this game.
: Re: DORF FORT

New version out yesterday! 0.31.8

I used the tile set you recomended for 1 full fortress, I actuly had a harder time seeing walls some times in it, unless I made them into smoth ones. Sadly the dwarfs only lived 2 years, they were killed by an ambush of goblins during the 2nd trading session with the home town. The home town only had 3 cross bowmen, in the trading party, they killed off one wave of goblins, but the 2nd wave struck from the south and had an amazing Macemen in it who tore appart 12 of my dwarfs and the 3 cross bowmen. sadly I only had  a population of 23 so the remaining 10 decided to take the goods from the merchents and head back to the home town, while the goblins finished raiding off any straglers.

Downloaded the game, looking for a decent tileset so that it is easier to visually guess what things are until I get a better feel for play.  Does anyone know of any good tutorials for the newest version?  I'm thinking about just looking at the one for the previous version and doing similar things, but with the updated game...

Capt Duck is still my fave. posted in here some were by me. Most of the things he covers are still the same. I dont think he covers making a world but I cant rember. I do know that its a lot easyer in the new game to make a world if you have a magma level added into your world so as you dig down you will run into lava no matter what so you can make forges and what not with magma instead of the damn wood burrning ones. haha!

Read a little, then figured just to work my way through and guess.  I read/watch a little on the side every once in a while, but won't really do much until my first society goes belly up.  The main problem I have right now though is that my dwarves don't seem to want to farm.  Anyone know what might be wrong?  I have muddied the soil, have seeds/spawn, and have issued orders (I think), but nothing happens.  According to a few tutorials I have done everything I have to do, but is there something easily missed?

As with many things in dwarf fortress, there are oh so many ways that your dwarfs can decide to stop growing stuff. The learning curve is steep on this game and the tutorials can have some glaring blind spots. I feel like I sound patronizing, but I'm just trying to be thorough:

I'm assuming you already built farm plots, but just to be safe I'll mention that you need to hit "b" then "p" and use the uhkm+arrow controls to define your farm plot. A dwarf with Farming: Fields labor enabled will have to "build" it. Some tutorials think this is so obvious they don't need to mention it; this is a common problem with people so good at a game they feel qualified to write tutorials.

You should make sure that one of your dwarves has "Farming (fields)" enabled in his labor preferences, and that he doesn't have too much else going on to distract him. Try turning off some of the "Hauling" tasks if he seems to busy to grow his ass some dinner.

Make sure your farm is set to grow a seed type you have for the current season. There are four seasons for each field, and you'll want to make sure that you have a seed type selected for each one. "Plump Helmets" is the type you most likely have on hand. This is kinda a more advanced side note, but try to make multiple fields and leave each field fallow for one season a year: this will make your fields last longer.

Set up a stockpile for seeds (custom stockpile settings can let you do this) near the farm plots and remove seeds from your other stockpiles. That way your dwarf plants more seeds between each beer break. It may be that he's trying to farm but can't get very far because of having to haul seeds around.

That's what I can think of right off the top of my head. Did doing any of those things get those lazy dorfs working?

Not patronizing at all (I know the difficulty of trying to be thorough and not wanting to sound insulting).  I did set the plot, I do have at least one farmer, and I did set to grow stuff (mushrooms), I'll try disabling other tasks and stockpiling seeds/whatnot nearby.

Thanks...

Mushrooms you cant build above ground. and in order to grow anything at all anymore you need water on your fields. so you need to build a few pumps to your plots if your building underground.

I tried working things out, but I knew the underground growing thing.  So either my dwarves prefer to starve or I'm still doing something wrong.  Turns out some of my stuff was stolen I think, but I'm still trying...

EDIT:  I guess I didn't have stuff that can grow underground, put some above ground fields and know they are growing stuff...

Another random question:  What do you usually do with all the stone and stuff early on?  I find it very cluttering and don't know what to do with all of it since I can only use so much in building stuff...

Haulers and bins mostly. Alot of games I've seen end up with an insane "general storage" area where stuff gets dumped to keep it out of the way.

destroy it. If bridges are still atom smashers in this version the best way to get rid of excess stone is to obliterate it. Otherwise, you will eventually suffer lag death.

How do you destroy stuff?

What I like to do is make a single square my dump usuly in my masons area, then select all the stones you want to be moved there for dumping. they will put them all in that one single square and it never grows bigger. you can go back to that square and unmark them from dumping and the masons will now be able to walk 3 feet and grab any stone that you have dug up. early in the game it will take a while if you dig alot like me but later once you have enough dwarfs to do shit any new area of stone you mark for dumping gets picked up realy quick.

I know, every time I obliterate anything (stone, cats, migrants) with my bridges, I know that matter is used to make Armok's bloody beard a little bit longer and a whee bit bloodier.

This is the first story I've seen from the new version.  Glad to see that it still hasn't lost its madness.

[soapbox]
I'm also glad to see that the next version will actually have some performance improvements (not too many, but it's a start).  I'd like to be able to play this game for extended periods without the help of the Cray Corporation.  It still makes me sad that improved UI and multithreading are voted below making dwarves poop (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/eternal_voting.php).

Just remember that everyone poops.  Imagine what'll happen in a catsplosion when cats can do it too.  There is not a litterbox big enough to save you.

I have attempted to learn this game a few times and my only real gripe is that I feel like im going blind at the sheer amount of content on screen at one time. I dunno if this would violate the spirit of the game but making everything onscreen 1 and 1/2 times bigger and using some SNES era sprites would make this game alot more accessible I think.

I believe this (http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php) is what you're looking for.

If that's not enough, here's Stonesense, a realtime 3d visualizer for current versions.

i  don't want there to ever be vanilla graphics.

fan made graphics are fine for the weak ones amongst us.

to be a df player you must appreciate the difference between the letter D and the letter D.

Lets take comic books seriously guys!

my 1000 is about comic books and silly people who think that they can translate morality issues in comics into real life.

But it was posted in the most holiest of threads: the Cody Fan Club.

I loved reading the developement logs about were-creatures. There's a complex code that effects if their discovered or not based on what they do in their community and the suspicions of those who live there. It's possible for them to be found out and have to flee to the wilds.

One of the code errors in the near finished version caused a necromancer to flee from his tower into the wilds when his zombies became suspicous of him.
