: Future Ransom: The Aaron/CoC Project
: Tom Church April 12, 2010, 03:04:17 PM
As some of you may know, I will be running two CoC games at Gencon this year.  However, as this was my first time registering events, and the fact that I have the attention span of a goldfish on LSD, I accidentally registered the two games at the same time.  Well, I could have cancelled one of them and resubmitted it, but a late afternoon trip to take Ross to get chinese drive-thru yielded a great moment of inspiration.

Our dear friend Aaron is currently unsure if he can raise the necissary capital to go to Gencon this year.  It is distressing him greatly.  So, in the interests of helping a friend, and getting better ratings for RPPR, the following idea crystallized...we will run a ransom to raise money so our worthy constituent may go to Gencon.  In return, from now until the day of Gencon arrives, we will take Aaron and teach this violence-hating introvert how to run horror (particularly in CoC) and HE will be the one to run my Divine Fire scenario at Gencon.

For the months leading up to the big event, there will be an ongoing 1980's training montage as we teach Aaron that it's not only a good thing to rend players apart with the claws of eldritch mutated Nazis, but we will take you along every step of the way.  To first learning the system, then to the basics of running good horror games (with the help of Ross, the Fear Master himself), to finally running published scenarios for the RPPR group.  And every step will be recorded, both for our own amusement, and to silence anyone that says our training methods don't work (bastards).

Obviously, this will not commence until after the Codex of War is completed.  Still, I want to put it out there and see what our gaming ninjas on the RPPR forums think about this.  Make your voice heard.  Do your duty.  There is no I in team.  Only you can make a difference.  Kick the tires and light the fires.  That's no moon, it's a space station.  Kneel before Zod.  Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker.

YES.
YES.

This is all very good. There is no reason this should not be.

Oh for the love of GOD!
BEST RANSOM EVER.

Either Aaron runs a horror game or he shatters. And we get to listen to it either way.

Sure, I'll donate. The more people at GenCon the better.

What are the chances that one of the rewards would be a Skype Cthulhu game run by Aaron?  I'd donate for that in a heartbeat.

: beowuuf April 12, 2010, 04:27:14 PM

At long last, a Call of Cthulhu game as it was meant to be played - after four hours, the players get the unsettled feeling something nasty was around, but they manage to avoid it with some minor sanity loss.

Anyway, I'm a sucker for the APs anyway, and would love to hear more Aaron. Yes, yes, and thrice yes!

Aaron must be a horror master.

IT MUST BE DONE!!!

If this means we'll also get a version of some sort of supplement for divine fire then I'd be a happy donater.

I've ran the game twice, with my own slant on it, to great success.

Okay, you people are WAY too excited. I mean, this is all fun for you, but I gotta WORK HERE!

Seriously thank you all for the support. I am actually taking this seriously, and hopefully the sessions leading up to Gencon will be good.  Also, for any of you who may be joining us during the Gencon session, Tom will be sitting at the next table with a cattle prod. This is to be used on me in case I decide that one or more players should survive the game with their sanity intact.

I may have one you can borrow. I have an H2 on hand which I doubt I will be using during your session (seeing as I am not running any official games)

I'm not in your game, but then I would get to experience it vicariously through a piece of my technology.

I am making six pregens for it.  There were only 4 tickets for it.  There will still be 2 openings for those with open tickets.

Fuck yeah! Another bullet point of awesomeness for the H2.

For serious though. I'll be there with open tickets, my H2, and my girlfriend who would also like to play. Even if we don't get in, I'll be willing to leave the H2 behind for you to use. :)

Every single AP and Episode could feature a catchy H2 jingle.

Sounds like we're going to have a good number of listeners showing up to RPPR games with open tickets. I sure do hope the official players are feeling delinquent this year!

So we're going to poison the water supply.
Excellent.

I'll repel from the roof my twin desert eagles glinting in the moonlight, but only enough to make me look badass, not enough to attract attention. Then I'll Sam Spade through a window and Solid Snake through the halls. If there is a guard sleeping I will let him finish his dreams before plunging him into a nightmare. After dispatching my foes I will remember what my mentor Tom Church has taught me, everything he has taught me.

Before I can get into the water supply room I have to cross a ballroom filled with ladies and gents. They will be drinking but I do not drink. I get out of there before they can notice that i am not in an outfit. I have my poisons in a pouch. I will then mix the pouch with the water supply so that the players that have paid money and signed up for Tom and Aaron's games will get nasty fevers and not be able to play, because they will be too sick to play.

Then everyone on the internet RPPR Forums will have a chance to rub their Zoom H2s together. Maybe Henry Rollins and the avatar of George Carlin will show up to bring us crystal pepsi and rub us with diamond encrusted dick wipers. The game will be splended. There will be no survivors.

Okay Aaron, this is going to be fine. Your going to get through this. There will not be any mass-casualties caused by the podcast listeners trying to get into our games. The game will be fine. The players will be great  Just breath deeply, relax and....

Just think WWTDD (what would the Doctor do).

Why, he'd babble on, speaking alot and acting like he had a plan until he actually came up with a plan, and then he'd do the plan, and it would be GLORIOUS!

Unless, you know, it kills him and forces him to regenerate. So better work on that skill just incase.

Regeneration is a tricky skill.  I have it down now, but earlier ones were something of a bitch. For example, this is a close approximation to what happened during my 25th regeneration:

I think it was more that I didn't have an actual image (as mental images tend to be more nebulous I guess), so to see an actual "picture" per se, it would never look like something that never really existed...

Or I suppose whoever else from the group that I run into at Gen Con this year. I'll admit that it's rare I'm dead on, though. I had a similar thought at meeting Ross. I would say that the radio-quality voice threw me off somehow, but I suspect that there is a strong disassociation between voice and appearance for me. However,

I remember Tom mentioning he was an "overweight white guy" in an RPPR episode.
IF TOM IS THE MAN APPEARING TO BE TOMMY WISEAU, then I must say this. You aren't overweight Tom! Also, you look attractive in a suit.

I'd seen the picture of you and Tom meeting Henry Rollins... however long ago that was from.  I guess it's the proper beard vs. the old goatee.  I'd sorta pictured you as a guy I could run into at class; now, you remind me of my high school band director.  Don't take that the wrong way.

Meanwhile, back at the ransom... You're a quarter of the way there.  In a day.  It's a shoo-in, man.  Enjoy your trip.

Na hes prob just been listing to the damn brits that been playing king in yellow on there pod cast. He just got a lucky guess.
No seriously Go Aaron, so what happens to the over fundage? cause I plan to pleage still to get my button.

Hey! The Silver Scarab along with the other heros dealt directly with Hastur during the primary 'Age of Masks' game. Though he is eternally trapped in Carcosa, but that's beside the point!

As for funding, any more that we receive will be going to help fund RPPR. So in turn more donations will allow the following:

 - Give Ross the ability to create and post more material

 - Allow Tom, Cody, Bill and everybody else to produce more cool in-game antics

 - And of course allow me further opportunities to humiliate and embarrass myself in front of an internet audience.

No. Do your best to run the most bloody Call of Cthulhu game that ever was (When in doubt, add blood to common household objects.) and you will win the internet.

Well, I would have appreciated if you kept that secret for a little while longer. Damn.

At any rate, Aaron: humiliation serves an entirely different purpose on the internet. ANY kind of attention is good attention, MIRITE GUSYS?!

Er, at any rate, I may need to see a Mountain Dew-boarding of Aaron before I part with my hard-earned (pfft) money.

I finished encoding the 5 bonus AP episodes tonight - i will upload them later today. They are:

The worst Star Wars game ever (recorded at Gencon 09 and run by a lady who knows nothing of the rules)

A mutants and masterminds game at gencon 09

Tom's sequel to Divine Fire - PCs are KGB agents in 1955. I am a PC - this is a 2 part game

Aaron's first game of CoC as keeper - he runs The Haunting and everyone is a terrible player

Also, to those who are receiving the DVDs I will be putting those together here in the next two weeks.  You guys are still and will always be awesome (Especially Tad, AmishNinja, Ristarr and ArtfulShrapnel whom I got to game with and talk to at the con.  I'm glad to have meet you guys in person, and thanks for putting up with my endless nerdiness).

I actually had a dream/nightmare with Aaron in it last night, I think he was trying to kill me.
He came to the door disguised as a pizza delivery guy and would pretty much just say "Its like....Dominos" he was working with some hot vampire chick who broke in through a window, then they chased me into the basement and I had to go for a sword, and I forget the rest.
I think I might have lost sanity points listening to the Haunting AP last week.

Whatevs...

Anyways, Aaron, I finally finished your LP. I thought you did pretty well with the GMing. You were far more bloodthirsty than I expected. How one player missed with the knife and instead sliced up another PC was pretty cruel, that guy didn't even fumble! Also, how the horse pretty much trampled that other PC's skull, wow, that was vicious.

My only problem was the ending. Why didn't you let the players decide between becoming ghouls and living to see another day, or dieing at the monstrous hands of the Colonel, but perhaps getting really lucky and fighting him off?

: Re: Future Ransom: The Aaron/CoC Project

My only problem was the ending. Why didn't you let the players decide between becoming ghouls and living to see another day, or dieing at the monstrous hands of the Colonel, but perhaps getting really lucky and fighting him off?

I do admit, I keep rethinking the ending myself.  I thought about possibly doing a large fight with the Colonel (possibly involving the Earth mover), but seeing the remaining time I had for the game I thought I should keep the story more concise and focused on shutting the reactor down (granted this is probably coming from my concerns of emulating Star Wars Lady and  the con game that went nowhere). In addition, I felt it would possibly be more frightening to the players to keep the Colonel as a malicious force that is never fully seen in order to increase the tension.

That is why I came to the conclusion to do the escape from the reactor via Grunwalds ghoul tunnel teleportation spell while the Colonel is trying to break his way into the sub-basement. Though something I thought of afterwards was to possibly allow the Colonel to break through and then during the fight give the players the option of escape through the ghoul tunnels. At least that way it would not have come off as potentially railroading them into a specific conclusion. Oh well, lesson for next time.

Also, I had to factor in that the players doing the German and French resistance fighters refused to do ANYTHING. For the majority of the game they just sat there barely giving any input on how the group should proceed into the camp.  In retrospect I should have just put them in a position where it was only fight or die and not allow them to hide or run as often as they did.  As for Grunwald offering the players a chance to become ghouls, I felt their interaction with him did not warrant him offering to join the ghouls.  They obviously did not trust him and tried to resist the teleport, so if figured that would have to be an option for another game in the future.
: Re: Future Ransom: The Aaron/CoC Project
: mathey August 15, 2010, 04:36:25 PM
Great game, Aaron!

I think you shoulda had the one doofus who barricaded himself in isolation have a Too Horrible To Be Described death offscreen. You know, like "The rest of you hear a metallic thud. Then screaming. Lots of it. In German. It dies off with some sobbing and what sounds like wet sex. (to player of German 'resistance fighter') Give me your character sheet." Rip rip.

As for the ending, you did a good job of holding off on actual physical descriptions for Grunewald and the Colonel and building tension for the last few players, but it sounded like you ran out of energy/time with the actual wrap up. That's happened to the best of us, but it did feel a bit rushed.
: Re: Future Ransom: The Aaron/CoC Project
: Kroack August 15, 2010, 06:10:51 PM
it was still a good game.
: Re: Future Ransom: The Aaron/CoC Project
: beowuuf August 16, 2010, 02:37:21 AM

I thought the ending was really good. Especially given the time constraints of a con game, you can't really beat yourself up if it turns out well. Look at Ross's infamous Age of Masks game (the player choice one). It is so rushed at the end its really sad. Your game had a perfectly executed, satisfying ending. The lead up to getting peopel to the reactor was a little railroady (You want to escape? Great, I'll tell you where the reactor is!) but after that the threat opf the Colonel and Grunwald's presence built the tension well. Grunwald was handled perfectly I thought - this very off, strange personality - whose voice even became a little more monsterous at the end - yet there was not one reference to ghouls in game, or his appearance (aside from glowing eyes, again at the end) nor explicit reference to 'I want to eat the bodies'. Just a wonderfully creepy unknown encounter, that in a normal campaign would be a great jumping off point.

I thought the start felt a little sluggish, I don't recall why the other play through with Ross, Bill and Cody went faster (could they just leave the truck?).

I think the amount of dice rolls asked for seemed excessive, I'm not sure where the tipping point with that was, there just seemed alot at the start. I think mostly idea rolls seemed too much, then again if you are trying to nudge players not coming up with ideas, I can see the temptation.

I thought the base stuff was well done (except for the small quest nudging at the end) and the combat with the weird creatures fun. It was nice to see aspects we haven't heard of before in Tom's released play throughs, like the soldiers in the barracks and like actually trying to get the vans going. Somehow Tom's games had a grander feel to the plot - I think because the players were pushed into the main plot from the word go. I think if the players in your game had only touched upon the plot as much as needed to escape with the plane or truck, it would have left it a mysterious and grand weirdness. Not sure exactly what was off on that, and it's only a minor thing.

The way the players were removed seemed fair - the horse was dangerous, and the player at the reactor did almost choose his own fate, and only bad luck saw his friend not aid him.

Anyway, an impressive first gencon GMing! Hope to hear more games in the future!
