Lets get this started. Some of you are farther ahead then others.

When your characters are complete and approved, then we will move each of them to their own separate threads.

Before I can finish my character, the pdf tells me to give my third phase out to the others, so that they can do the last two.

The Story

Title: Hell Hath No Fury

Aspect: Don't Give in!

Summary:

Morded hunted down the Hellion that slaughtered the priests of the old faith who took him in, killing it only to discover a world full of the supernatural. In order to combat what he saw as unnatural, he swore an oath to the old gods, giving them his soul in exchange for the power to fight all manner of fell beasts and sorcerers. While he hates all things supernatural, he is always drawn to them, and constantly resists the temptation to give in to what he could use against them.

I did some work on the phases and aspects.  I am starting to rethink all the cat burglary-type skills, not sure where they would fit in.  Maybe pickpocket type abilities, but not really the second story stuff.  Also, maybe I need to spend some refresh points on the "unaging" ability, but not sure where that would come in.

Thaddeus "Lucky" Barlow

High Concept: Lucky Rogue with a Heart of Gold ... Silver.

Template: Minor Talent

Aspects:
Champion of the Underdog.
Graveyards are Filled with my Dead.
"No Balls, No Blue Chips".
Stories Should Have Happy Endings.
Riverboat Gambler, both literally and figuratively.

Trouble:
Live long enough and you will owe everyone something
Sucker for a Sob Story

Phases:
Where did you come from? - "No Balls, No Blue Chips"
Born in 1832 in Vicksburg Mississippi, the son of a gambler ( Garland Barlow ) and saloon owner ( Flora Wells ).  My father was lynched in 1835 by a vigilante group in Vicksburg and my mother ( and me ) run out of town on rails.  We settled with her running a riverboat saloon and me learning the ways of the river.
By 1858, I had been living the life of a riverboat gambler since my mid teens, first as an assistant/straight man for some of the established sharps and then on my own.  I was a natural, but a little to inclined to "force" the issue.  This ended up with me caught cheating at poker.  I was beaten almost to death and thrown overboard.  I awoke on the shore badly damaged but surprisingly still alive.  I healed up nicely without any scars from the terrible beating.  I continued in my chosen profession, but at this point I started getting strong feelings about the way a contest/decision could turn out.  It was almost like visualizing scales with both choices being weighed against each other.  The most likeliest would seem heavier.  These feelings turned out to be pretty accurate, but with lady luck always getting her say.  As I grew older, I noticed I never seemed to look or feel older from this point in my life.

What Shaped You? - Graveyards Are Filled With My Dead
Abby was a strong woman, able to handle life on the ship and with me.  Smart, quick-witted and a biting sense of humor, she was my true love.  When she was needed for a con, she could handle her part with the best.  She always seemed to deal with any situation.  Failing her was the great tragedy of my life.  I was in process of reeling in a big mark, worth a lot of money, when the boiler exploded.  I kept with the mark getting him to safety, knowing Abby could take care of herself and not wanting to lose the money even during such a disaster.  Turned out I had taken the wrong bet and Abby perished.  Devastated, I started traveling ... and aging.

What was your first adventure? - Stories Should Have Happy Endings
After about 10 years abroad and much internal reflection, I decided to return to the River and I stopped aging again.  I returned to my lifestyle, but not with the vigor I had previously experienced.  Something was missing.  The thrill was gone.  It was just a job, a living.
Then I met Christina.  The first beautiful soul I met since Abby.  Her husband was also on the Riverboat "circuit" and was an ass. I started seeing her whenever I was able to pass through Natchez or when I could catch her riding a boat with her husband.  We became very close friends and I learned some of her history.  I am still not sure how she got hooked in by such a despicable man.  I learned of the abuse she suffered at his hands and decided to do something.  Not for any potential gain for me, but because it was the right thing to do.  She deserved better.
I was able to lure him into what looked like a very profitable situation with me as a partner, of course if I did not play my part correctly then things could go very badly.  But why would I double cross him, we barely knew each other and would make out like bandits afterwards.  Needless to say he did not live past this mistake.  You don't con some people and get away with it.  I am not sure if Christina ever suspected my handiwork in her husband's death or if she was just too pleased to ask any questions.  But, after her mourning ( quickly ), we were married and I settled down.  I had to use some disguise abilities to make it look like I was aging at least a little, but we had a very happy life together.

3rd marriage 1917  ( Nora Greer d. 1919 ( influenza )) - Memphis
4th marriage 1924  ( Hope Dalton d. 1932 ) -- New Orleans

Character Concept:
Born in 1832 in Vicksburg Miss., he made a living as a riverboat gambler ( and when out of stake money, whatever he had to do.  cat burglary, confidence scams ... ).  He was caught cheating in a poker game, got the shit kicked out of him and thrown overboard to die.  He washed up on the shore and healed normally, but with no scarring.  From this point on he did not age.  He also slowly discovered the ability to "sense the odds" in situations.  This is a great skill for a gambler.  Unfortunately, he will go sometimes against this sense, even though he know the odds are bad, and bet the longshot or the good story or his favorite.  By following his heart instead of his mind, he usually loses.  And when he loses, he loses big.

Over the years, he has found his ability to not age is tied to being close to the Mississippi River.  He left for New York after the War ( that one in the 1860's ), and found after a couple of years that he was aging normally.  When he returned to the Delta, he stopped aging again.  Since that he has not left for any extended periods.

His troubles would be gambling and backing the long odds.  This would usually manifest in a weakness for a good story that will enlist his help, even though the task is doomed to fail.  As many gamblers do, he wealth fluctuates between rich and broke with dramatic frequency, even if he could have used his ability to make a lot of safe money.

I think we should all, kind of "Call" one person to do the fourth phase, and one person to do the fifth.
A kind of turn based dibsing.

I'll pick someone to do a fourth phase of, and the person I choose will choose someone else, who didn't do the fourth. Does that sound good with everyone else?

I'll start off by.. dibsing.... Thaddeus!

Now, why would Mordred be seen with a gambler....
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 15, 2010, 11:37:34 PM
Almost all done character Sheet!

Just need my stress and skills, as well as two powers or stunts.

Thaddeus! Phase four of yours. Got one

Met a man named Mordred, his car was broken down just outside the city limits. I was going to walk on by, but I noticed some wounds on his flesh, they looked like claw marks. I asked him what had happened, and he was reluctant to tell me at first, but after I brought him to a bar, he began to open up and tell me about his story. That's when the shit really started hitting the fan. Seems Mordred's got a few enemies, human and.... other. ((Didn't know if he'd been exposed to the supernatural yet so..)) There were these things he called Shen, not quite sure what exactly they were, but they looked like weird demon monkeys. At about 3 in the morning, most of the patrons in the bar just vanished, and there was this strange sound coming from outside. It disappeared after a few minutes, but then one of these things went flying through the window. Mordred took up a spear that he was carrying, strangely I didn't notice it until then) and just stabbed it. I looked outside and was able to see a whole host of them, probably 15 or more. Mordred pushed me outside, and that was the last I heard of him, until lately that is. I just thought he'd died, but I've been hearing stories, about a tall Norwegian fellow patrolling the alleys. Might be him.

Further work on concept:

NAME: Jack B. Nimble
High Concept Aspect: The Seelie Mage
Trouble: In love with Summer
1. Growing up normal
Jack grew up in a normal household. His parents worked normal jobs making a middle class income. He got along with his classmates and had decent grades. He played sports, but wasn't a member of the cool crowd. He had good friends, namely Tom, Little Joe, and Dig. They  did the kind of crazy crap that they would talk about after becoming adults. He took his girlfriend, May Toti to the prom, but didn't get laid and ended up getting drunk with his friends. He worked an after school job to buy a car. He scouted colleges with his parents and did well enough on his SAT to get into a National University. A week into his first semester and his pleasant, comfortable life went to hell. <okay>

2. The choice between magic or mundane or the lack thereof.
Apparent, the supernatural is real and its kicking Jack's ass. Jack didn't ask for some mystical spark inside him to suddenly manifest itself. He was happy with the way things were. Maybe some people would like strangers suddenly walking up to them, talking crazy shit, but Jack wasn't one of them. Its hard to believe even those people would be keen to have monsters out of folklore and B movies showing up to either try and kill them or bug them to death to do some choir. Most annoying was finding out the professor he was relying on was a wizard. Professor Tom Garner was teaching science for christsake and was an agnostic, how could he believe in this crap. He was the most logical, doubting tom in the whole school. Jack was pull kicking and screaming into the supernatural world. He realized even as these members of the White Council told him he could go back to his old life that they were full of crap. Once his eyes were open there was no going back. He wasn't the type to live a lie or to put his friends or family in danger from trouble they couldn't even see or believe in. <clean up>

3. Love is a hurricane.
Time past swiftly, Jack proved to be a capable if rebellious student. He might have been asked to become a Warden, if not for the for mention tendency to question if not outright ignore or subvert his superiors's instructions. He had come to enjoy going on long hikes on nature trails. It was a way for him to relax. It was on one of these walks that he happened across a girl being threaten by some freaky looking types, something like goblins. He "saved" the young woman and she seemed very grateful, or at least amused. After that point he kept running into this girl when he went on his hikes. He got to know her, although he had known she was "different" from the start, she ended up telling him she was a Seelie, a Summer Lady, Lilly? Lets just skip ahead to the good part and say, Jack ended up falling in love with her. The feelings of a fae are fickle at best, but whatever she thought it didn't stop her from gifting (binding) him with her favor.  The White Council didn't take well to this and seem to be keeping Jack at arms length. Jack is flush with emotions and won't hear anyone telling him, he might be being used as a pawn for the Summer Court. <needs work>

Rudolph Fillian

High Concept: Sorcerous Vagabond

Template: Sorcerer

Trouble: The Corruption of Absolute Power

Where Did You Come From?
Aspect: Drifting

Rudolph’s own memory of his childhood is very foggy. He may have had a family, but to Fillian, they are not memorable. His most distinct recollection is constant traveling at an extremely fast rate. Always on the move, going from place to place, his life was lived with the itinerants. As Fillian got older he realized he would never have any stability as long as he lived.

What Shaped You?
Aspect: The Railroad Less Traveled By

Tired of walking the dusty highways that crisscrossed America, Rudolph hitched rides on trains for over a year. On one particular locomotive journey he met a crazed hobo, with the most extraordinary abilities. The man could control fire, shape water, and move the earth itself. He even whispered about his control over death. Long into the nights did Rudolph talk with the man about how he came across his otherworldly powers, and Fillian learned much about the secret world hidden by the mundane. The ability to control the craziness around him appealed to him. Fillian’s sessions with the man ended abruptly when he awoke one morning to find that the Sorcerer had vanished.

What Was Your First Adventure?
Aspect: Standing Firmly on a Slippery Slope

Rudolph had just begun to develop his own abilities when he meets a charismatic leader of supernatural biker gang. The gang leader is an accomplished warlock who maintains an iron fist over his violent group of criminals. Cruel, vicious, and extremely sadistic, the leader realizes Fillian’s potential. He promises to reward the young sorcerer with his own considerable knowledge, if only Rudolph would join him. Initially, this offer appeals to Rudolph. What could be freer than roaming the country, doing whatever he pleased, along with promises of greater power? So Rudolph joins the gang and follows them in their brutal travels. Soon, he begins to realize the error of his choice. The gang leader is more monster than man. Fillian watches as he commits the most heinous of crimes such as rape and murder. Wondering why such a powerful man could be so monstrous, Fillian confronts the gang leader and kills him in a massive display of uncontrolled evocation magic. This act firmly places Rudolph on that slippery slope. The man was a monster, but he was a person as well. As the gang leader slips into the embrace of death, he relates to Fillian the Laws of Magic and tells the young Sorcerer that he sees himself in Rudolph’s eyes. Those words haunt Fillian to this day.

Whose Path Have You Crossed?
Aspect: A Gambling Man
Story Title: What a bunch of animals
Guest Starring: Lucky Barlow

The biker gang took over a local hangout while passing through.  The leader maneuvered a young lady of minor magical powers into a bad situation.  Enjoying his absolute control over her, he even gave her a way out, a game of chance to get her out of the jam.  She convinced a stranger into helping her.  A self-proclaimed professional gambler.  The leader didn't care, since he would be able to control the game with his magic. Or so he thought.

He ended up losing to the gambler and lost his power over the girl.  After he lost, he ordered his guys to make an example of the gambler.  Rudolph was getting pretty fed up with the bikers at this point, sabotaged their efforts and helped the gambler and the girl make their escape.

Focus Items:

The Definitive American Atlas: Expanded 50th Edition [+2 Complexity +1 Lore (Transportation)]
This tattered old tome was discovered discarded on the side of some secluded country road. For many months Rudolph sat and stared at the Atlas and thought of its purpose. Rudolph eventually came to use it as a guide to control and learn about quickly traveling from place to place, and perhaps walking between worlds...

A Golden Locket [+1 Discipline (Air)]
Rudolph took this piece of jewelry off the biker gang leader after he died. Thinking that he could sell it for spare change, Rudolph pocketed it and didn't look at it until much later. Eventually, while low on cash, he remembered he had the trinket. Taking it out, he tried to rub the blood off the exterior, with no success. Opening it up, he was shocked to discover a picture of a young biker leader smiling, wearing a suit, and kissing a young women in a white wedding dress. Horrified, Rudolph dropped the locket and realized what wretchedness power can bring. Fillian kept the locket to remind himself of that dark path, but to this day he still can't clean the blood off.
(I’m really sorry about the length. I kind of got into it. It’s 1,000 words long, yeah. It’s also riddled with grammatical errors. I added a summary under the spoiler if you don’t want to read it all. RJ- If something doesn’t fit with your character, just let me know, and I’ll change it, okay? Also, if something is incorrect according to Dresdenverse cannon, I'll change it too.)

Dyers has a lot on his plate at the moment when a vampire summons a demon to take him out. Rudolph discovers the summoning chamber and gives chase. Dyers is attacked and manages to fend off the demon but falls off the side of his office building. Rudolph saves him through teleportation. The two manage to banish the demon. Fillian, being pursued by a warden leaves. Dyers gets a nasty headache.

Augustine Dyers

Whose Path Have You Crossed?
Story Title: Eternal Complications

The Red Court gangs were getting bolder and more violent by the night. His company was in the middle of negotiating a large business deal, White Council affairs were becoming an increasingly strenuous affair, and now, to top it all off, Augustine was beginning to believe that the Vampires were up to something utterly evil. Dyers just couldn’t seem to focus. It was all so maddening.
________________________________________________________________________

It was some time after the incident with the Gambler and Rudolph’s murder of the gang leader. Fillian was fleeing from something dangerous. He didn’t know what it was but it only began to pursue him after he broke the so called first Law of Magic. As he ran, Rudolph thought of the mad hobo who had disappeared after gloating about his necromantic abilities. Rudolph did not want to vanish, so he kept fleeing from his unnamed assailant. And it was because of this panicked state that Rudolph did not notice the St. Louis Police CAUTION tape around the large hole in the ground.
________________________________________________________________________

Dyers felt a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He wasn’t a diviner, but he knew something was going down tonight. Standing up from a desk crowded with paperwork, Augustine exited his office and went out onto his balcony overlooking the city. Something just wasn’t right.

________________________________________________________________________

Fillian woke up floating in a pool of water. He was in some sort of cave network. The hole he had fallen through was not visible. The water must have carried him away from the cave’s roof entrance. Rudolph waded to shore and collapsed in shock. He had broken his leg in the fall. Suddenly, he heard chanting. He was no expert but it sounded like a very powerful, and dangerous, summoning. Rudolph, wanting to learn more about whoever was attempting to summon something so hazardous, hobbled his way towards the noise.

A conversation echoed down the corridor as Fillian limped down the cave system.

“Why have you brought me here?” The voice sounded utterly otherworldly as if it were spoke by something not used to oral communication.

“Let us make this clear. We know your True Name. We don’t want to have to hurt you, but we will if you won’t cooperate.”

There was a long pause. The second voice sounded cold and calculating, a voice without remorse or compassion. Finally the summoned creature spoke, “Very well. What do you wish of me?”

“We want you to kill Augustine Dyers, a wizard who resided right here, in St. Louis.”

“And the payment?”

“Whatever you wish, within reason. After the deed is done.”

Another long pause followed. Then the creature said, “Very well. Let us adjourn.”
________________________________________________________________________

Augustine Dyers felt something move into his office behind him. He turned to face a handsome man wearing an expensive suit and pants. Dyers instantly recognized him as one of the numerous Red Court Gang lords that operated within St. Louis.

“Hello, Mr. Dyers,” the man said curtly.

“Your attempts to kill me have all failed before, what makes you think it will work now?” Dyers asked as his hands reached for his tie and wand.

“We never killed you because we never brought decent company,” the vampire spoke as the door to Dyers’ apartment blasted off its hinges and demonic ooze entered into the room.

“You fools,” Dyers whispered as the vampire gang lord transformed into his alternate bat form and bull rushed him.
________________________________________________________________________

Rudolph eventually managed to haul himself into the summoning chamber. Looking around, he was compelled to study the symbols drawn on the cave floor and the various magical items scattered around the room. However, he was more obliged to helping the wizard these horrid beings had targeted.

Rudolph followed a trail of slime, presumably something the creature left in its wake, out of the cave network onto the surface. He was in a park next to an office building somewhere in St. Louis, supposedly. The ooze led into the building. There was a sign on the door that read Dyers Corporation. Looking up into the night’s sky, Rudolph could see some commotion on a balcony on one of the upper floors. Limping to building entrance he could see the doors were locked and the elevators off. He had no choice, he had to journey through that “other place” to get to the balcony. He didn’t know its name but it was a dimension that the summoned creature would probably call home. He had only been there once, and he knew it was dangerous, but he had no other option.

________________________________________________________________________

Dyers was tired. He managed to block off the balcony with a shield, effectively trapping the demon in his office. But the vampire just wouldn’t go down. It was wearing him down and he didn’t know how much longer he could fight.

With a flurry of motion they suddenly both fell against the balcony guardrail tumbled off the side whilst grappling with each other.

Dyers felt gravity take effect and began to plummet through the air. In his panic he let go of the vampire. Before he could collect his wits, somebody speared above him.
________________________________________________________________________

Fillian messed up the reentry. After avoiding all the nastiness in that “other place”, he entered back into reality five feet from where he wanted to be. Instead of standing on the balcony, Fillian was standing next to the balcony in open air. Luckily for Dyers this placed the sorcerer in a position to save the wizard’s life. Grabbing on to the railing, Fillian managed to catch Dyers’ flailing hand. With great effort he hoisted Dyers up to the side of the balcony. Looking down, both of the men watched the vampire thrash its flightless wing as it plummeted through the air and smacked into the ground.

Both sorcerer and wizard looked at each other in contemplative silence. They shook hands and introduced themselves. Then they looked at the terrible monster wrecking havoc in Dyers’ office. Wordlessly, the two got to the business of banishing the creature. With their combined effort they worked through the night and managed to send the demon back from where it came.

Shocked at the price the vampires were willing to pay to control his innocent city, Dyers sat down at his desk while Fillian sat looking at the city. Perhaps he would come back someday, but he just couldn’t stay. His hunter was still on his trail. So he bid goodbye to the wizard and set out once again.
________________________________________________________________________

Dyers woke up in morning with the biggest headache. He had, had the most tumultuous night. Vampire, demons, sorcerers, and now he had to talk to a warden about some lawbreaker. Was life ever going to become simple?

So, I think I've got it finished, all except phase 4 and 5. My item of power I believe might need changing though, since it might be a little too powerful, though not nearly as powerful as a sword of the cross for the same refresh cost. I find it appropriate since my character has literally sold his soul to his gods.

Mordred Thulsson

High Concept: Soldier of Faith

Trouble: Temptation of power

Other aspects:
Lap of Luxury
Riches to Rags
Don't give in!
(Phase four) You did what!
(Phase Five) I will protect you!

Background:Born in 1980. Came to North America from Norway in 1984. He was born to a promiment oil baron family, being responsible for half of all oil exported from Norway. He was raised in a life of luxury, never wanting for anything. He had no friends to speak of, but the family help. He was a diligent son and dutiful student. He had two younger sisters, twins.

Rising Conflict: His parents died in a car crash in 1990. His twin sisters were sent to a foster family, while he was taken in by priests of the old faith. He never heard anything of his sisters again. The priests took good care of him, training him in the use of weapons, and to be strong in his conviction. When he was 15, a hellion killed the priests, sparing him for reasons known only to itself. He decided to take up weapons and hunt it.

The Story: Mordred hunted down the Hellion, trapping and killing it within a church. He almost died, but for the power of his faith. After killing it, he was exposed to a world full of the supernatural. Mordred saw the corruption and decay that these beasts inflicted on the world, and swore to fight it wherever he could. He swore an oath to his gods, giving his soul to them in exchange for power. That power was granted in the form of a Golden Torc he wears about his arm.

Skills:

Superb: Weapons, Conviction
Great: Endurance, Might

My only question with your character, and I still haven't looked at everyone else's, so this isn't only directed at you Kroack is: why is your sorcerer with no access to the kinds of training and shaping that the white council provides have a superb in both conviction and discipline and a a +4 in Lore?

The character concept is vagabond trained by evil bikers....which is about 16 kinds of awesome, but how does that all fit in?

I can see his conviction being that high! Sure enough he can be a vastly powerful sorcery in terms of the amounts of energy he can call up at any given time. No problem, that fits right in with the concept....But he's better than Harry Dresden at controlling it? Who has had two masters, one of whom is the blackstaff of the council? As for Lore....how much studying has he done on the road with no permanent workshop? although I suppose the biker mage has one somewhere. (I'm really digging the idea of a supernatural hell's angels running around, so much so that i'm going to incorporate it somehow.)

It seems most of the magicy characters are double superb conviction/discipline builds....and I understand the temptation....But it should fit with the concept. With the biker backstory I would expect fists or endurance to be higher? Or Drive! Drive isn't even on your list! But with your listed trouble, and everything else mentioned, I wouldn't expect your discipline to be so high.

Justify it to me with sound logic, and at least hint at it in your aspects, and I am 100% A-OK with it. But right now your sorcery could kick the crap out of Harry Dresden at the beginning of the books, in just about any fight. Even one stacked against you.

PM me if you have questions or hidden justifications or anything like that, and we can talk it out privately if you'd prefer.

OOOOOO and don't forget to list your mage specializations and your focus items. And what they all do for you. Remember that they can also help you overcome some differences in one or two areas of magic if you want to reduce that discipline.

That's what I tried to do with mine. The only one I'm having a bit of trouple explaining is presence. Though that one is because he was raised in the high crust, knows how to conduct himself enough so that he's in the background, but with a palpable presence. He also knows how to talk to people and aid with their problems, due to being raised by the priests for a few years.

Also, Kroack if your character killed someone with magic, that would give him "Lawbreaker First"

That means you took the life of someone with magic.

That sucks. What you should do, is take a 20 on your scribe scroll, and just write the pdf's over again.

: Kroack May 16, 2010, 10:21:25 AM
My only question with your character, and I still haven't looked at everyone else's, so this isn't only directed at you Kroack is: why is your sorcerer with no access to the kinds of training and shaping that the white council provides have a superb in both conviction and discipline and a a +4 in Lore?

Yeah, your definitely right. I'll make some changes and add the other stuff.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 16, 2010, 10:30:38 AM
Kroack,

Remember that if your character kills someone with magic, it automatically gives you "Lawbreaker First" which is a -1 power.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Kroack May 16, 2010, 10:37:33 AM
Yah, but the gang leader was a vicious monster set in his ways, driven by his nature for blood and carnage.
If that still needs the lawbreacker thing than I'll shift some of my supernatural stuff around.

Also, I added inhuman speed to the supernatural abilities. I think it fit because my character is a magic using drifter that walks all over America. However, I didn't know if I COULD add it or not, so if someone knows more about it please inform me.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 16, 2010, 11:00:01 AM
Yeah, you do need to take lawbreaker. Direct from the PDF

What Happens When You Break the Laws
In game terms, whenever your character crosses the line for the first time—breaking a Law that he has not broken before—he must immediately take a new Lawbreaker ability.

Lawbreaker [-Varies]
Musts: This ability must be taken immediately upon breaking one of the Laws of Magic (page 232). You must specify the Law broken at the time you take the ability. This ability must be taken separately for each Law of Magic broken—noted like so: Lawbreaker (First), Lawbreaker (Fourth), etc

You can take inhuman speed, doesn't say anything against it.

Doesn't matter how evil the guy was. If he's human and you killed him with magic you broke the law.

However you can change it so you almost kill him (maybe at the last moment do one of those "I won't become what you are") or just think you killed him but the Warden finds him alive when they investigate or don't use magic to kill him (guns and knives work well :P)

If you really want your pc to have killed with magic in his past then make room for the lawbreaker.

I had at first thought to drop Thaumaturgy or take a focused ritual (biomancy) as most of the uses of Thaumaturgy didn't fit my concept, but I wasn't sure if we were going to have any other wizards, so I didn't want to gimp the group. I also don't mind lowering Discipline as my character is indifferent to collateral damage, but I the player was a little worried about laying waste to parts of the city. :P
: Re: Character Creation...

Don't worry about it. My character will literally step in the way of spells in order to stop innocent people from being harmed. That's why the Torc gives him protection from the supernatural.

Guns, knives, sharp sticks, rusty nails, however, will kill him.

I'll be taking advantage of that then. Way I envision my character is massive conviction and virtually nonexistant discipline, not even sure how to make his powers work. Since he can't properly control his own magic he fears those who can.

I'm thinking of upping the toughness to Immune, as because it only protects against one thing, it gets a +8 against the refresh, bringing the total cost of it from -10 to -2. That being said, anyone with a rusty spoon will be able to stab him to death, or ropes, or sticks.... or a lawn dart....
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 16, 2010, 02:56:05 PM
You mean... like any other person in the world might be? It's not creating a weakness, it's giving you a strength. Stop complaining and hold still so I can use you as a shield against fireballs.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 16, 2010, 02:59:55 PM
Lol. He might be able to protect you guys against magic, but only magic that affects his physical body.

Yeah, so Immune it is then. Just watch, one of the wizards we face will be smart enough and just speed up a damn tree to hit me in the face.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 16, 2010, 03:10:56 PM

I've settled on a geomancer for my Channeling for my Focus Practitioner because I think raging earth is well suited to mass destruction and sudden emotional erruption. And because it gives me the eventual option of producing electric discharges via magnetics, should my character figure out how to do that. Not sure about the Ritual side of things at the moment.

My other abilities will enhance my geomancy greatly while making it more difficult to use.
: Augustine Dyers
: Arje May 16, 2010, 04:21:18 PM
AUGUSTINE DYERS
High Concept: Wizard with Means
Template: Wizard
Aspects: Wizard with Means, Unfocused Attention, American CEO, Responsibility to his City, Magic isn't the only way to get things done.

Trouble:  Unfocused Attention
Between his magical studies, his duities as a red sash senior member of the wizards council(he was breifly considered for a purple sash, but lost out in the final round.) , his duties as CEO of a large multinational, and his social responsibilities, his attention his frayed, and he often misses things he's specifically looking for.

Phases:
Where did you come from? American CEO
Born in St. Louis in the 1832, Dyers has watched over this region for a long time. For the most part the only supernatural threats were those of the fae court and some native american medicine men. It's not until recently that the vampires have begun moving into town. Dyers took advantage of the burgeoning importance of the Gateway city as it grew and developed, starting the Dyers Corporation, a large multinational corporation which has evolved and developed over the years. It's second only to AB in terms of local philantrhopic work, and a mainstay of STL business and social culture. The fiction of maintaining control is getting harder and harder to maintain as technology catches up to his changing identitys through the Dyer "family"

What Shaped You? Responsibility to his city.
No matter what it is, the flood of 1993, the growing influence of the Vampire Clans, the recession, the gentrification of the city, etc, Dyers wants to keep this city alive and kicking. Corruption, crime, murder, not to mention supernatural threats are all threating to consume his home, and often times Dyer is the only thing standing in their way.

What was your first adventure? Story Title (Coprorate takeover) Aspect (Magic isn't the only way to get things done)
When the Red Clan first tried to move into town some 50 years ago, Dyers started buying up their assets out from directly under them, no mattter what or where they were. The message was clear, "You are not welcome here" But that kind of action is more difficult now, still Dyer's leaned his lesson...there are multiple tools to fight something, while it may be appealing to dismantle something magically, there are always other options.

Whose path have you crossed?

Ristarr, going by the one at a time rule, gets to pick the next person to intergrate his character into their phase four, and it'll continue going until someone integrates their character into mine, then I'll pick a new person to go into phase five. This way everyone's happy!

How many slots do you get for magical items?

Are they separated by the two types of magic?

The different spellcrafts you take tell you what slots you can get.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Kroack May 16, 2010, 06:32:17 PM
I'm just a tad bit confused. For Thaumaturgy it say you can have 2 focus items. For evocation it says you can also have 2 focus items. You can have a total of 4 focus items, two for each type? Am I right?

: Re: Character Creation...
: Arje May 16, 2010, 06:40:21 PM
As far as i can tell, you get 4 focus items slots....but they don't necessarily have to be 2 for thamaturgy and 2 for evocation. So since im stronger in thamaturgy than in evocation, i devoted all of my focus slots to evocation items....it just made more sense...

I've searched the book, but it seems to be ok, if anyone can point me at something that says the 2 free thamaturgy slots must be used for thamaturgy I will change them around.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Kroack May 16, 2010, 06:47:01 PM
Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. I kind of want to focus my character around transportation and movement, seeing as how he's constantly on the move (and he can't control evocation magic very well), but I don't know if I can use the two evocation slots to give my only thamaturgy focus item some extra oomph.

Well what I was thinking was by dropping thamaturgy and filling it with sponsered magic, I'd have two points or whatever they are called left. Which I could use to buy Refinement 2, but I don't know if it would be a good idea or not.

Rudolph Fillian

Phase Four -- Whose path have you crossed?
Story Title -- What a bunch of animals
Guest Starring -- Lucky Barlow

It seems like I may not be the strongest character in a fight.  He is really strong in the interpersonal skills and in some of the sneaky arts, with a little psychic ability to feel which way a die may fall.  He knows a lot of people and probably gets along with most of them.

Is he going to be powerful enough to hang around with a bunch of hocuspocusers?  Do I need to change some stats around for some fighting skills ( guns or fists maybe )?

: Re: Character Creation...

Question of the game master: Refinement specifically mentions Evocation and Thaumaturgy for specialization bonuses. Can Channeling gain the benefits of Refinement? Obviously it would only do so once at most since one can't climb higher up the skill list without additional focuses to apply to but I'd like to boost the power by 1 if I can.
: Re: Character Creation...

That was worded as a guideline, and given his discipline skill, and his aspects and story, I think he does both....he just can't summon anything outside of Spirit with any ooomph. Even his air and water discipline he'll be burning out at anything above 3 shifts....

So yeah, long story short, he can do veils and he can do force constructs.

Having reread both books, It looks like no. But you could just as easily, tie in, change or work one of your aspects into it, allowing you to call that up to throw more power around.

With a flurry of motion they suddenly both fell against the balcony guardrail and tumbled off the side whilst grappling with each other.

Dyers felt gravity take effect and began to plummet through the air. In his panic he let go of the vampire. Before he could collect his wits, somebody apeared above him.

Dyers woke up in morning with the biggest headache. He had, had the most tumultuous night. Vampire, demons, sorcerers, and now he had to talk to a warden about some lawbreaker. Was life ever going to become simple?

I love it. Read all of it. Love it.

I'm going to change some of the dialog around a bit to fit more of Dyer's tone.....and it's great, but I love the enthusiasm and I'm starting to get stupid excited for this game...

I'm going to take 5 minutes to think about who i want to tag, and we will continue right along.

Man, that was a lot more detail than I was expecting. Now I want to make sure my phase five for the next person will be just as long. Lol.

Cool, I didn't really know how your character would respond to the situation, so I just kind of improvised.

I don't fault you if it's too much to read for a PbP game. I added a summary just in case.

Lol, it's not a bad thing, I was just expecting a summary. I really liked it though, I want to do that for the next phase.

Having reread both books, It looks like no. But you could just as easily, tie in, change or work one of your aspects into it, allowing you to call that up to throw more power around.

Something about how you are move powerful on occasion that you expect.

Since I posted that I actually found the rule where it says I can't. There's a little note at the end of Channeling that basically says "Refinement can only be used to gain more Item Slots". So that's what I did. In fact, my entire character has changed completely since I made that post.

The ones done so far!

Rudolph Fillian

Phase Four -- Whose path have you crossed?
Story Title -- What a bunch of animals
Guest Starring -- Lucky Barlow

Looking over what you wrote, I'm thinking the aspect i'm going to take from it is "I'm not alone anymore"

So there are other powers entering 'my' (loosely) city, some of them who need training, some of them who are lawbreakers....etc. I may have to take a more active roll in shepherding them etc. Perhaps as our story progresses I can offer you apprenticeship. I like the swap of our convictions and disciplines. We can learn alot from one another, but I can induct you into the larger wizarding world.

Do you think we soulgazed on that roof? If so we should make those rolls and determine what we learned from them...

Now as for who I'm picking...I'm going with Bronnen. I'll have it up in a bit.

Sweet! Though that does mean that Tada's going to be picking someone else. I guess he could pick someone else too and post it up as soon as he wants to.

Just to remember, the aspect I picked for this one was You did what!

Which... seeing as you're a wizard can have anything to do with magic. lol.

Earth Shaking Treasure Seeker
Balanced on the razor edge of neutrality
"Never forget the past!"
Lure of the Unknown
Never live it down...

Phase 1, Where did you come from?
Peter wasn't raised in a broken home because he made the early life choice to leave it. By the time he was in middle school his parents hated one another. Why? He doesn't know, but it wasn't fun to be around. Things spiral downward while mom drank and dad stayed out of the house as long as humanly possible, leaving Peter, his brother and his sister to fend for themselves. Social services eventually got involved and removed the children from their parent's home. In a group home Peter firmly positioned himself in the pecking order but when it came time for an actual placement he found himself disgusted by his foster parents and especially by his siblings apparent acceptance of their new life. First day of high school, Peter didn't go home on the bus, he just vanished into the New York inner city.
Aspect- "Never forget the past!"

Phase 2, What Shaped You?
Life became a long running action packed adventure of Peter as his high school years unfolded. Getting what he needed and learning the ways of the real world. He spent a lot of his time in the tunnels and passages cut under the city, using them to avoid harsh weather, social workers, and law enforcement. Down in the dark was where he met Edward Fargo, a city sewer worker and developing magician. Edward had been involved with water function in the city for decades and felt that a hands on effort was the best way to go. Recognizing the talent in the young man Edward began making the effort to bring Peter under control and prevent his magical abilities from doing him harm. As it turned out Peter's abilities where narrowly focused and vastly different than Edward's own specializations. The boy described himself "hearing the walls" and with effort could force the ground to move. By and large Peter found the White Council's "rules" easy enough to live by because they didn't forbid anything he wanted to do... with the possible exception of the Seventh Law.
Study with Edward provided Peter with previously unknown focus and direction, both mystically and in morally. Though he never completed high school, Peter did find it in his heart to forgive his brother and sister for their efforts to move past the childhood they had experienced, even if he couldn't do the same.
Aspect- Lure of the Unknown

Phase 3, What was your first adventure?
Leaving New York for the first time was exciting beyond measure for Peter. He was eighteen, certified as stable by Old Ed, and clear on his path in life: discovering what was lost within the earth's embrace. Of course, the state of New York referred to it as "grave robbing" and "illegal trafficking in historical artifacts". Peter liked "treasure hunter". It was as much about knowledge was about making a living and whatever human authority might say about it, knowledge was meant to be discovered.
Upstate New York seemed like a good place to field test everything he'd put together in the last few years. Peter ended up using everything he'd learned and making up some fresh stuff on the fly to boot when he discovered he wasn't the only one hunting for relics around the Catskill Mountains. A faerie creature wearing the human guise of Klimov Aurelius, a Georgian Archaeologist, played a week long cat and mouse game with Peter through cities and wilderness as the two traded possession of a sealed mystical tome. In the end, Klimov claimed the artifact after a show down on the outskirts of Albany by revealing his true from in the fight. The conflict did not go unnoticed by the local magicians of the White Council, likely the only reason Peter escape without serious harm. However, it also meant there where witnesses for the young Practitioner getting his ass handed to him by a unicorn.

Sweet! Though that does mean that Tada's going to be picking someone else. I guess he could pick someone else too and post it up as soon as he wants to.

Just to remember, the aspect I picked for this one was You did what!

Which... seeing as you're a wizard can have anything to do with magic. lol.

Seeing what i see, my second one, and really everyone second one...are more supporting than active than the first story, and should involve two other players, so i'm picking bronnen and tadanori. I'll start out:

Augustine was interested in the new European cultural relics being shown off at the STL Art museum. He had heard rumors of some of them being of great power, and he needed to get a sense of them if he was going to keep his eye on them. While he was there he ran into:

(Now each of you add a line or two, and we can each choose our own aspects from them)
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 17, 2010, 01:03:50 AM
Um... I don't know what to put for one. lol. Mordred doesn't go to museums. I'll have to do some thinking for it. Gimme a few minutes!

Someone should make up a player list, so we actually know how many people are in this thing. lol.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Arje May 17, 2010, 01:06:10 AM
I'll get to work on it.

They could just as easily be religious artifacts....in fact the current exhibit at the history museum is artifacts of the Catholic Church on special loan from the vatican...

They could be artifacts if a faith based nautre that you might be interested in, and its obvious why Tad' is interested.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 17, 2010, 01:07:58 AM
Hmm.. Perhaps something about a relic of the old gods being rumored to be there.
: Re: Character Creation...

exactly!
: List of players
ristarr -Thaddeus Barlow - Lucky Rogue Riverboat gambler
Ryo- Jack B Nimble- Seelie Wizard
Kroack- Rudolph Fillian- Bikergang Sorcerer Transport guy
Bronnen- Mordred Thulsson- Norwegian American Soldier of Faith
Arje- Augustine Dyer- CEO Rich-ass Wizard
Tadanori Oyama- Peter Barak- Earth shaking Treasure hunter.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 17, 2010, 01:14:51 AM
Damn! Languages! I forgot about that. Mordred needs to know some now.

That'd be rough without the Scholarship skill, won't it? According to the book each Scholarship level gets you a new language. I took Linguist so I could make half my choices dead languages. I figure with so many mages somebody better know their Latin.

Anyway, adding to the Phase:

With the lure of relics from across some of the oldest places around, Peter finds the newest display impossible resist. While turning an apprassing eye to the relics, the security, and the ladies, he crossed paths and wits with an impressive gentleman of fortune (the literal kind) by the name of Augustine.

Addition: Oooohh, "Earth Shaking Treasure Hunter"... I like it! Arje, sir, you are a genius.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 17, 2010, 01:17:20 AM
Oooh, darnit. Then maybe I can't take languages... Well then. Who'se Ryo gonna have if you take both of us? lol.

Mordred looked about the museum, not seeing the relic that drew him to the place, but taking comfort in the threshold of the building all the same. It was strong, a place of power, of learning, quite like the monastery he grew up in. Even though he carried his spear in plain sight, no one seemed to pay any mind to it, it was as if they just ignored him completely.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Arje May 17, 2010, 01:18:29 AM
Given the number of players, I'm considering adding one more aspect...for that very reason.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 17, 2010, 01:23:24 AM
Speaking of Aspects, for Phase 4 I think I'm gonna add "Friends under the Arch".
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 17, 2010, 01:24:53 AM
As long as someone uses magic, my "You did what!" still works. lol.

I love the threshold rule, it makes my guy pwn inside places with thresholds. Watch out as long as he's inside!
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 17, 2010, 01:26:41 AM
As long as someone uses magic, my "You did what!" still works. lol.

If you really want to make that one work, I could steal a particularly under secured relic. You know, for the good of the magical community. And Dyer probably paid me to do it.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 17, 2010, 01:28:35 AM
Ha Ha. That you could do. Though... No never mind, that works. I had a brain fart for a second there and didn't know what I was writing. I actually ended up writing "Pancakes eat elephants in england"
: Re: Character Creation...
: Arje May 17, 2010, 01:29:38 AM
So all together we get something like:

Augustine was interested in the new European cultural relics being shown off at the STL Art museum. He had heard rumors of some of them being of great power, and he needed to get a sense of them if he was going to keep his eye on them. While he was there he ran into two other powers.

With the lure of relics from across some of the oldest places around, Peter finds the newest display impossible resist. While turning an apprassing eye to the relics, the security, and the ladies, he crossed paths and wits with an impressive gentleman of fortune (the literal kind) by the name of Augustine.

But Augustine saw the spear. And felt the tinge of another nearby magical presence. Then the grand unveiling of the collection's most important piece happened. It was the largest emerald any of them had ever seen, and it was set directly in the pommel of a very very large warhammer. Three sets of eyes with three sets of intentions suddenly focused on it.

(so what do we want to do kids? go after it? protect it from something nasty? both? something else?)
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 17, 2010, 01:35:23 AM
(Well, if it's Mjolnir... That means he will kill anyone that gets in this way. So... I say demons)

Mordred's mouth dropped slightly as his eyes fell upon the hammer. His lips moving in a silent whisper. "Mjolnir" the word echoed forth, audible to none but the gods themselves. With purpose in his stride, he strode forward, pushing his way through the crowd to reach the front.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 17, 2010, 02:34:01 AM
(Demons are cool. Just don't get us killed in our pre-game, this isn't Traveler.)

The emerald flashed dollar sights but the hammer practically hummed with history. The treasure hunter nudded the business man and gave him a knowing smile. "Now that, good sir, is a piece!" Peter's eyes fell on a man who looked positively stunned in his boots by the display. "Apparently some others agree..."

Looking over what you wrote, I'm thinking the aspect i'm going to take from it is "I'm not alone anymore"

Although looking at it now, I didn't take soulgaze.

Rudolph Fillian

Phase Four -- Whose path have you crossed?
Story Title -- What a bunch of animals
Guest Starring -- Lucky Barlow

In the Works

So all together we get something like:

Augustine was interested in the new European cultural relics being shown off at the STL Art museum. He had heard rumors of some of them being of great power, and he needed to get a sense of them if he was going to keep his eye on them. While he was there he ran into two other powers.

With the lure of relics from across some of the oldest places around, Peter finds the newest display impossible resist. While turning an apprassing eye to the relics, the security, and the ladies, he crossed paths and wits with an impressive gentleman of fortune (the literal kind) by the name of Augustine.

I moved some skills around.  I went with the 1-2-3-4-5 model. I made myself a little better fighter ( fists +3 ) and I am better at relieving people of their stuff.  And I still have the strong social skills.

Tad, would Peter like to come out and go looking for some "treasure" that might be currently owned by someone?  I don't really use magic items, but I like to sell them, or I am sure there will be things that can be readily converted to cash.  I know some people that can sell stuff.  And I kinda need the cash.  I had Cleveland winning the NBA finals this year, and I don't even want to talk about what happened with the Colts.  Luckily, my bookie has easy payment plans.  He lets me do favors for him.  Seems like I always owe him favors.  Maybe I should leave the sports bets alone, but I had this hunch.

I heard about this granite ring that was supposed to be special.  It is currently possessed by a shady guy that hangs out at Harrah's a good bit and lives intown at Chase Park Plaza.  I know a guy that works there ...

Rj! We're waiting for you next!

Mordred wants things to happen!

I think someone should steal Mjolnir while he's focusing on keeping the demons out of the museum by increasing it's threshold. Only the strongest can come through while he's doing that so there'd be ample time to take the hammer and run, and that would give him a reason to find one of you, so he can find it.

Only if it's for the benefit of greater magical society. By which I mean more than one person. So yes. And the older something is the better the odds that Peter'd be willing to help. That does double if there happens to be any female security in need of distracting.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Arje May 18, 2010, 02:00:58 AM
ok...

Let's go with something like.

A low rumble permeates the gala. Something inhuman is present. Everyone is plunged into darkness as the lights go out. Someone screams, and there is a sickening crunch of ripping flesh, then the thunderous pitter patter of running socialites. Suddenly, the lights are back on, and a horrible fanged monster some seven feet high is holding the remains of a young woman, and it's reaching for the hammer.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 18, 2010, 02:05:27 AM
Mordred reaches instinctively for Mjolnir, but his vision is impaired for a moment, and in that moment he feels pain. The museum itself is crying out in pain, the threshold has been broken.

The lights return, and a beast stands beside him. Mordred growls, the sound coming deep from his chest and surging forth like a tsunami, to sweep aside all those that stand in his way. The growl is meaningless, simply a method by which he focuses his mind, and attunes himself to the gifts given to him. The museum was in pain, but no longer. It strikes back, seeking to expel the beast from within its halls, aided by the might and faith of the soldier seeking to protect that which his god wielded.

((Hell yeah. That was very well written Bronnen, very well written.  And yes it's Bronnen writing this...))
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 18, 2010, 02:14:41 AM
Flesh monsters where vastly beyond the normal bargain of Peter's affairs. This called for teamwork. He addressed the stranger currently interjecting between the creature and the hammer: "Keep it busy! I have a plan!" Leaving the frontal assault to others and opting for a tried and true method from his own past, Peter maintained his distance, turning his attention to the other relics surrounding the central display, taking in carvings, images, and ancient writing as quickly as possible, searching for reference to the expulsion of demonic entities. Or failing that a nice crowbar to put between himself and those claws.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Arje May 18, 2010, 02:32:17 AM
The man in the suit watched the others spring into action, and could feel the threshold being strengthened. This was still a public place, so even with the alterations beginning to change it, Dyers still had much of his power. He called on it now.

Bringing up his sword cane, and pointing it at the creature, he gathered his power. "Lococolumunus" He spat forcefully at the demon. The air began to distort and lens around it self, and a massive column of pure force collided into the demon with a locomotive's energy. Said demon went flying into the wall, thankfully right between two paintings instead of into one. Leaving a sizeable depression, it picked itself up, eyes burning with even more hatred.

"That's not good." Augustine said to no one in particular and with a very profound sense of understatement.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 18, 2010, 02:36:28 AM
Mordred's grip tightened upon his spear, knowing that it would not kill the beast alone, yet he was ready to strike. His arm raised, moving to the ready to spit the demon's heart to his spine, and then he felt the wind beside him move, and the demon was sent flying.

"Wizards" he muttered under his breath, his disdain of them barely held back at the fact that the demon had already killed an innocent woman. "Keep away from Mjolnir, whatever you do, Do not touch it!" He fairly shouted these words, not wanting the sacred hammer to be defiled by their arcane touch, and trying to protect them from whatever it would do.

With those words still echoing in the air, he surged forth, spear thrusting forth, ready to kill the best.

((I gotta head off to bed, work early tomorrow morning))

"Ha!" Peter rapped his knuckle against a case holding a worn book with yellowing pages. The writing was torn, faded, or rubbed out in alot of places, but enough pocked through that he got the gist of it. With a flush and a click he whipped a work knife out of his pocket, popped one corner of the hardened plastic casing along it's top seam, and pressed down on the opposite corner, and spun the top, opening the case. Treasure hunters learned a thing or two about avoiding traps (or alarms).

After grabbing the book Peter rushed back to the wealthy looking gent with demon throwing powers. "Insider information! Part of the same collection. Let's see here, hammer hunting demons..."

"Look at the hammer. Look at it. It's not the hammer. It's the Jewel. It's practically spewing energy. The hammer is just so much iron and steel. See if there is a section of Jewel Hunting Demons in the index" He said, with a modicum of sarcasm

He pointed his cane at the beast again, and formed a wall of force directly behind it. He called to the man with the spear who was charging it. "It's pinned from behind. It can only move through you. Don't let it hit you. It will probably shear your torso clean off. I'll try to keep it off balance. Death of a thousand cuts etc." The demon moved quickly, and Dyer managed to send it into a spin by blasting it with a fair bit of force at it's upraised arm. It's side was exposed. A perfect target for his newfound warrior friend. Mjolnir he thought to himself with a grin. It's not like there weren't other magical hammers. I mean there was.....OK fair point. Maybe the guy was on to something. Augustine really couldn't think of another magical hammer off the top of his head. But the wizard's sight didn't lie, and whatever that jewel was, he was sure it was more damaging than any mere hammer of the gods.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 19, 2010, 01:58:22 PM
Mordred ignored the speech occurring behind him, his mind focused on the threshold, and the demon. He know it could not hurt him, not with its own body in any case, and that simple fact made him wade in, thrusting his spear into the side of the beast, and ignoring the blows it sent his way from supernatural means. He did need to avoid getting into direct melee with it however, as no matter how well protected against the supernatural he was, a cracked spine from being thrown into a column would still injure him.

Jack B. Nimble's Wild Adventures, quest starring Peter Barak.

A cold day in mid-winter, a young human woman of service to Summer has gone missing among the snowy trees. A Lady commands her knight to his duty, whatever the danger he may face. Seeking ghouls and winter fey the knight set to his work in the deep forests until the woman's trail was gone amid the snow.

As night fell he discovered a new human's trail. Seeking to outpace to falling sun, the knight made haste and surprised the human he found greatly. After apologises where made, the traveler, who claimed to be a treasure hunter, shared what he knew of the woods. He sought the remains of a cult who worshipped monsters in the forests.

Late at night the camper awoke to distant noises in the formerly silent woods. With haste they prepared themselves and crept into the darkness of the forest, following the sounds which became voices as they drew closer.

About the mouth of a cavern a mass of people dressed in furs and painted fearsome encircled a high stone pillar, from which a young woman hung by her ankles. Below the girl stood a savage woman with a blade of chipped stone and wrapped in the hide of a bear, proclaiming the return of their god. Beyond, in the cave's mouth, the shadows from the fires danced into nightmarish shapes.

From the trees, the knight and the seeker watched. Both knew this could not be allowed to pass. The heroes seperated, "surrounding" the cult, and waited for their moment. As the leader finished her proclaimations, the clear errupted into spring. The trees bloomed and warm wind whipped through the air. The stone pillar tore itself free of the ground, sliding to the edge of the clearing and falling into the trees as the surrounding snow melted, spending water swirling down from the hillside above the cave, dousing the clearing with ice water and slush.

In the mass of confusion, amid the rumblings as the cave mouth collapsed, the knight and the treasure seeker slipped away with the young woman. The knight of summer had recued the damsel in distress and the seeker held the antlered icon from the altar.

In good spirits, the heroes parted ways, calling one another friend.

Hey guys, I might not be posting a lot until Sunday night.  But it will be mostly due to gaming!  I am running 2 games this weekend that I have to do some preparation for and playing in the skype game with Ross tomorrow night.  So I will probably be around some Friday night/Saturday morning timeframe.
But I  wanted to do share some quick thoughts for phase 5.

Rudolph and I have met before and I still owe him for saving my butt.  I would like to work something into my aspects like "champion of the underdog", so I am for helping someone out of a jamb.  Preferably using my thievery skills.  Breaking and entering would be great!  Maybe a rescue ( although Mr Nimble has already been involved with one).   Maybe something to try and get Jack back into the decent graces of the White Council.  Steal a relic from an evil sorcerer?  I mentioned a potential target in a previous post.

I am pretty much game for anything.  I enjoy the adrenaline rush and that is why I gamble and burgle.

Thanks Tad, that's a great story. Only thing, I'm not a Knight, although the difference appears to be pretty slight. I'll add this to my third story, but he is bound to a Lady by emotions (maybe enscrolled :P) and not duty. I see him more as a personal champion rather than serving the whole court.

I'll try to do as well for Mordred.

Mordred Thulsson in "You did what!" guest staring Jack Nimble.

Mordred had been walking through a track of woods for the past hour and was getting frustrated. He had been told there were some cultist operating out of a park just outside of town. The local law hadn't done anything, because they apparently hadn't done enough to warrant arrest, but Mordred knew without a doubt that he needed to be here. He had only a few weeks before given up his body and soul in exchange for the power to fight against the evil he now saw all around him.

He pushed aside a branch only to be struck by a clump of snow. Swearing an oath, he stopped to brush off his chest. He was dressed for battle. He wore only his torc, a large cloak and a pair of leather and fur pants that came down to his knees. His upper body and face were covered in symbols that few in this modern world would recognize or understand, but that matter not at all to Mordred. The purpose of these runes were to honor his gods. They were a physical, visual testament of his faith.

Snow crunched under his think, heavy boots. The air was crisp and cold this wintery day, but the beserker ignored it. He was aware of the chill, of the danger it posed if he stayed out here to long, but he had been drawn here to preform his sworn duty. Suddenly, he heard the cry of two crows, as a couple came crashing out of the trees and into a small clearing in front of him.

Jack had just recently parted from a new found friend after saving the girl currently running at his side, only to be ambushed by yet more members of the cult. He had managed to avoid the trap, but was quickly becoming mentally and physically drained. The girl at his side was in a panic and she let out a scream when they ran in front of the large man dressed in furs and carrying a spear. Jack let out a growl of anger at his bad luck and tried to escape with his charge.

Mordred saw the man seeking to avoid him, but he would not let this cultist do what he pleased with the poor frighten girl he held so tightly in his clutches.  Letting out a roar, he spirited towards the fleeing man and woman. His spear thrust out before him, but before Mordred could close to do battle the man pointed and a beam of pure light shot back at him. However, he was prepared for just such an attack. This is how the corrupt fought, fleeing when threaten, killing with indifference, but his gods would not allow this tainted magic to harm him. Strangely, Mordred realized the attack was not directed at him, but enveloped a tree off to his left. Then without warning the tree started to move. It reached out and grabbed him, seeking to restrain him, but to such a battle harden man action and thought were as one. He let his spear fly even as a branch circled his arm. Unfortunately, whether from the tree's grasp or the other man's own skill, the spear missed its mark and did not land a killing blow. The man has hurt enough to drop and lay crumpled in the snow, holding his side as blood seeped between his fingers.

When the girl leaped to impose herself between Mordred and his prey, he hesitated. Something was tugging at the back of his mind. The coat sleeve on the man's right arm, burst into flame, symbols appeared, glowing brightly. Mordred did not know their meaning, but he understood they had something to do with the fae. Dread filled his heart, was his purpose here to hunt cultist or something else? The man he had just injured wasn't who he thought he was and the girl trying so desperately to protect him, wasn't his hostage.

In his mind's eye he saw Old Garnard still alive and speaking to the boy he had once been. The priest's face bore a shocked expression and Mordred could hear him saying as clear as day, "You did what!".

Thanks Tad, that's a great story. Only thing, I'm not a Knight, although the difference appears to be pretty slight.

I figured you weren't a literal knight, I was aiming for a fantasy story motif. Besides, you've got Seelie Magic and your in the service (*wink wink nudge*) of a faerie lady so your pretty close to knighthood right there. Better watch out.

Peter shrugged, skimming pages, glancing up every few seconds to make sure the creature wasn't coming towards him. "As far as I'm concerned, you stick a magic jewel on a hammer and you get a magic hammer, ergo," he flipped a page, revealing a painted image that, if one squinted just right, kind of looked like the demon, "Muskatblomme Arbeidssøker, the Hammer Seeker. The creature desires power and steals the strength of others by taking their possessions, most notably their weapons. It says here Thor killed it by crushing it under a mountain slide when it tried to steal his hammer. But I guess there's more than one."

Ah, I was just rereading the 4th aspect part and realized you have your character add a supporting roll to the other person's 3rd aspect story. Sorry Bronnen I just thought each person made up a story with the character you tag as the star.

I didn't even pick up that Tad had used my story. :P

I went back and made some edits. The story happens not long after you gained your powers. I don't know what your intent was for the "You did what" aspect, but I saw it as something you could use to draw on past memories/lessons/etc or on jumping to conclusions, acting on assumptions etc.

: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 20, 2010, 10:22:46 PM
Don't worry, you did fine. The "You did what?" aspect is basically for any time that someone does something very stupid that Morded can't really believfe.

Oh? How does that help you gain or spend fate points?

Oh? How does that help you gain or spend fate points?

If a buddy does it and it sets the progress back, he gains. If an enemy does it and it present an opening to explit, he spends. Bam!

Ahh I see. So you can have aspects that deal with other people's actions and not just your own?
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 21, 2010, 11:39:25 AM
Ahh I see. So you can have aspects that deal with other people's actions and not just your own?

Aspects are wild cards. It isn't always about your actions, they can also describe circumstances or situations which you might find yourself in. There's a whole chapter on it in the book, Chapter Seven.

They list the following as possible Aspects:

* Relationships (Mama’s Boy, Apprentice to Ancient Mai)
* Beliefs (The Lord Is My Shepherd, Nothing Is Forever)
* Catchphrases (Can’t Keep My Mouth Shut, “It’s Not My Fault!”)
* Descriptors (Wiseass Wizard, Rugged as the Road)
* Items (Sword of the Cross, My Mother’s Pentacle)
* Pretty much anything else that paints a vivid picture of the character (Big Man On Campus, Anger Is My Constant Companion)

Are we eventually going to make separate threads for each character?

Are we eventually going to make separate threads for each character?

I already did. Unilateralism!
: Re: Character Creation...
: Ryo May 21, 2010, 09:05:52 PM
I got the basics from the chapter, but even in your examples its all about the character (You're the apprentice, my Lord, my mouth, etc.).

I guess if it would have been "Finding fault with other people's foolish actions" I would have understood better. The way it was phrased just confused me.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 21, 2010, 10:57:21 PM
I can understand that. It doesn't have any deeper meaning out of the context of the character's background.
It's a catch phrase.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Arje May 24, 2010, 12:10:36 AM
Everyone please create a separate character thread, very much like what tadanori did.

Character Name, and then a catchy 3 or 4 word description. It's where you and I will do things maintenance related.

Also, if you could look at the following information and fill it out for at least yourself, if not the group I would be thankful.

1. Does your character have any unusual quirks? What are they?
2. Physical abnormalities? Birthmarks? Tattoos? etc.
3. TRUENAME (Don't post this, but have it written down somewhere with a pronunciation guide)
4. Favorite things? Food? Clothes? Everyone has little likes and dislikes which say a lot about them.
5. Notate some physical descriptions. There is probably a world of difference between how you and I drink coffee, and the way we do says something about us. Do you pick it up with both hands, grasping the mug firmly, allowing the warmth to move into your arms before you inhale its rich aroma, or do you drink it like a junkie needing his next caffeine buzz? Try and come up with 3 or 4 physical descriptions for common acts. A cup of coffee, putting on shoes, things like that.
6.  catch phrases? regionalisms? slang? accent? define their voice before you start writing them.
7. Pick a place for them to live. (I'll post some greater neighborhood information a little later)

I have not read much of the magic sections yet, but do I need a TRUENAME, since I am not a spellcaster?

YES!!!!! very important!   =)
: Re: Character Creation...
: Kroack May 24, 2010, 10:37:28 PM
everyone has gots a true name. Even demons and their ilk.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 25, 2010, 12:38:12 AM
What if one doesn't... know his true name, and anyone that would know it is dead. I.E Parents and priests who raised him.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 25, 2010, 01:17:49 AM
A true name isn't your legal name: it's the hum that you vibrate to. It's the words and the tone and the spirit of the phrase. Complex shit. If your not a Wizard than you probably don't know what a true name is (within the reality of the Dresden Files setting) but probably have general awareness that wizards can do bad things with someone's real name.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 25, 2010, 01:20:29 AM
I just bought the first book of the dresden files series so.. I'll be able to Rp this a lot better once I start reading.

I'll have to think of a true name then. Maybe one given by his gods or something.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 25, 2010, 01:44:57 AM
Hey, you to?! I just bought it this weekend and I've been rolling through it like mad. Amazing book.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 25, 2010, 01:46:47 AM
Haha yeah, I bought a shitload of other books too though. I have to read those first. I have Fevre Dream by George R R Martin, which i'm reading next. Then I have a book by Simon R Green, then two others by Jim Butcher, not in his dresden series, and then finally I have the first book of the dresden files.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Kroack May 25, 2010, 04:05:01 PM
I know what you guys mean. I'd heard of the dresden files, but I'd only skimmed through it every now and then. Now I'm going through the 6th book and I enjoy the series very much.

Its not so much given as it is the sum of who you are. Its like a glass which breaks at one particular harmonic frequency. It wasn't given, its a part of it.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 27, 2010, 01:19:08 PM
Most of the way through the first book and I have to say, reading just that far has given me a much greater understanding of the setting. I highly recommend everybody read "Storm Front" before we start play, it'll help you alot.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 28, 2010, 05:30:27 PM
When are we going to start this thing?
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 28, 2010, 05:45:37 PM
When Arje stops being dead. Real world stuff probably messing with him. Or maybe he just got his cable cut. Or maybe he's ducking us. Doesn't matter.

If he's not back by the end of the long weekend let's just start without him. We can BS out way through some general character interaction and fun.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 28, 2010, 05:49:26 PM
I like that idea!
: Re: Character Creation...
: Kroack May 29, 2010, 10:58:33 AM
Moving does require a ton of your time.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Ryo May 29, 2010, 01:18:37 PM
Before Arje had left I had started to talk with him about changing to a more hands on character. We have a lot of heavy artillery, but that won't work against all foes and short of using enchantments the mage types have a limited number of shots. What do the rest of you think?
: Re: Character Creation...
: Kroack May 29, 2010, 05:07:37 PM
I honestly don't think it matters. It looks like more of an rp game than a mechanics heavy combat D&D game.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen May 29, 2010, 11:27:06 PM
Besides, I am the giant tank.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama May 29, 2010, 11:56:30 PM
I think you should play whatever makes you happiest.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama June 01, 2010, 12:54:35 PM
Okay guys, it's Tuesday, the end of the long weekend, so we're going to start the pregame play session now while we wait for Arje to complete his real world complications.

What wild and crazy adventure should we jump into?

I'm thinking something starting at a city library where our stories just happen to cross over. My character would be there doing some research on a possible treasure find in the local records.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen June 01, 2010, 07:31:58 PM
I was thinking maybe Mordred is wandering around the city, doing his hunting like he always does.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama June 02, 2010, 02:00:28 AM
Okay, we can work from that but we need a driving story of some kind. Pick an Aspect to Compel, it makes a good start.

I want to compel "Friends under the Arch", since Peter already knows Mordred from previous adventures. Since it's a Compel it's something "negative". So, what problem is Mordred having that Peter could help with?
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen June 02, 2010, 02:14:37 AM
Hmm, could be he's on the hunt for something, but can't find it for some reason or another, it's hidden from his sight by magic or something. Since he's only immune to the physical, his mind can be manipulated, so the magic could be made so he can't see anything.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama June 02, 2010, 11:27:20 AM
Well I've got an easy Compel into the adventure so you can kick off and let Peter slide in or I can start something and Mordred could Compel in, though I'm not sure what with. Which works better for you?
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen June 02, 2010, 01:14:17 PM
I could start off, though where... I'll have to think of it for a bit.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama June 02, 2010, 01:42:36 PM
Arje did post that awesome list of locations in the city. Forest Park is undeniably awesome.
: Re: Character Creation...

I'll post something up later tonight. Busy writing my book right now.
: Re: Character Creation...

And I'm busy focusing on not throwing up. We all have lives to live.
: Re: Character Creation...

lol. Ok so, I fell asleep earlier than I was planning to.

After playing Twilight Imperium today I'll write something.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Tadanori Oyama June 04, 2010, 02:31:48 PM
Sweet. And we have a heart beat from Arje. He posted in the general section that he's on vacation and will be back in a few days so we still have a game! Sweetness. No reason not to enjoy some pregame character formation, of course.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen June 05, 2010, 01:32:37 PM
Ugh, I forgot how long twilight imperium took to finish a game. I got home at midnight.

Tonight I will write something.

I think so.
: Re: Character Creation...

It was a great exercise in character creation for the game though.
: Re: Character Creation...

It was.

 :-\

It was indeed.

 :(

Just. Dammit. I thought this was going to be really fun.
: Re: Character Creation...
: Bronnen June 15, 2010, 12:49:38 PM
Well, we don't need to let it die, i made an RP post, some other people can do the same. Lets just have fun until Arje gets back!
