I just wrote a review for RPPR over at The Hopeless Gamer (surprise: it's positive!), and I wanted to let you all know! Need to point to a third-party review of RPPR for your friends who are (foolishly) on the edge of whether or not to give the podcast a try? Point 'em over here ( http://thehopelessgamer.blogspot.com/2010/05/role-playing-public-radio-more.html ) and we can work together to bring them to the dark side that is RPPR!

What about The Strangers? I never saw it, but goddamn if it didn't look terrifying. I also liked Quarantine and thought it was an excellent zombie flick. I'd like to see [rec] at some point as well.

I've been on a Savage Worlds kick lately, and would recommend it for its ability to run combat very quickly. In addition, anything that uses the One Roll Engine (thinking Wild Talents specifically here for Supers action) has quick and fun game play as well.

Quick Codered! Type 5 best Leno sketches/Jokes of the last 10 years! I won't even ask that you're punctuated, just show my youtube/hulu links, and I will be happy to be entertained by the chin (this is a lie).

It's near the top of my queue as well, hopefully I'll be getting it soon!

Thanks for the heads-up Ross. Went and made my donation, came away with over $300 in fantastic stuff (serentiy rpg? yes, that's fine, thanks!), blogged about it, then tweeted it. I would encourage everyone to check my twitter for the perfect number of characters to tweet to bring more people in to make donations: http://twitter.com/Paul_Vogt We need to shun anyone who doesn't participate in this.

What a stellar argument! I'm convinced!

RPGs / Re: Working with "Stubborn" Characters
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:25:00 PM »
Yeah, I really think this is an issue of actual character development. Nobody wants to stay behind except your character, where's your commitment greater, to the group or the kid? Either way you're moving on, but you end up showing your group loyalty or you're completely distraught over leaving the kid. Either way it's good role playing fodder and you just roll with it. This is what makes player characters central in the story - they make the hard choices.

Alternatively you could have left your character with the kid and started a new one, if this is what your character would have been more likely to do.

Awesome. Marvel I mean, not your letter, which is awful. I'm saying this as a huge Green Lantern fan, beeteedub.

Dragon Age is also on the PS3, but I can't stand the Dragon Age/Knights of the Old Republic control scheme. My understanding is that Mass Effect is different control scheme. Also Dragon Age was boring.

It might be good to start with general rule sets with lots of adaptations.

Basic Role Playing (http://basicroleplaying.com/) and Savage Worlds (http://www.peginc.com/) come to mind.

General Chaos / Re: Tweets are the new Aphorisms

I think there's a lot of room to play around with the format of Twitter. For instance, I'm writing an ongoing, I guess one could call it a "novel" but it's much more similar to a Sunday Comics style of serial story on Twitter. Just playing around with it, but check it out - http://twitter.com/SagaofHoplite

It's been fun trying to fit bits of the story within 140 characters. It's really changed my writing style, although I don't think it comes off too choppy once you've put it all together. It actually just feels kind of noir-ish if anything.

I just finished up my first play through with Roland and finished at Level 36. I'm taking a break from it before I come back, but I will definitely play it again, possibly several times. I'm on the PS3 (Hayuck) and believe my name is pwvogt if anyone wants to try some multiplayer out. I've only done single player up to this point, but would love to try some multiplayer.

Also I understand that it is facetiousness in this thread when the PS3 is denegrated, but I can't help myself - try to play Uncharted, Infamous, or Valkyria Chronicles on the Xbox. The only games I feel like I'm missing out on are the Mass Effect series.

RPGs / Re: That one thing. You know the one I mean.

First: our group is a group of friends. We've all known each other from early high school and are now all out of college - it's been a while. We haven't been playing most of the time, maybe only the last two or three years.

This being said, we have a player who, while he has a master's degree and generally did better in college than I did, has zero patience with learning any new rules or taking the time to actually learn his characters outside of his one favorite D&D character. This is the kind of guy who claims I nerf everything and idea he has when I GM. He's the guy in the group that, when you explain shooting at the zombie who is struggling with his best friend, he may shoot the best friend on accident, then shoots, and almost kills the best friend, he complains wildly about how "gay" it is and lame. I mean I WARNED HIM BEFORE HE ROLLED THE DICE, TOO BAD IF THE ZOMBIE DODGED IT AND HIS FRIEND DIDN'T!

Anyway, just Friday night we're playing D&D 4E. We're in an inn trying to talk to the city guard. This friend, who's playing a beast master ranger with a polar bear for a pet, decides that, while I and my brother and assisting in a silence rune to protect the room, he's bored and his pet is going to dig a hole in the ground... IN THE INN. The DM, another friend, is trying to get some important plot information to us as I'm trying to role play with the city guard, and we hear "my bear rolled a 34 strength test to dig in the room!" As my brother points out that there's a cellar and the bear will fall 20 feet, taking 2d10 damage, this trouble player exclaims "I didn't really do it!" He does stupid shit like this all the time and no one holds him to it. Not this time, my brother insists since he rolled for it, the bear should take the damage (seriously, the bear has over 100 hp, he can handle the fall for God's sake). This player gets all huffy and the DM agrees, so the bear takes all 8 damage from the fall.

We got over it later, but God, this is a burgeoning problem that is going to have to dealt with some day. The friend's good company when not trying to blow shit up in every occasion in a fake world when we're all playing make-believe.

General Chaos / Twitter thread Mk. II
« on: December 20, 2009, 09:51:24 PM »
So here's the old Twitter thread: http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?topic=128.0. I was going to post a reply there, but the forum didn't want me to; it in fact strongly suggested I make a new thread. So, here's it is, obeying the internet overlord's order to make a new thread.

I'll admit that I'm a late bloomer to Twitter. I've been following a few people for a while now, but never writing many tweets for myself. That's changing, so here's my twitter account for those interested in gaming/geek things - http://twitter.com/Paul_Vogt

I'm happy to follow anyone that posts their account - the more networking we all do, the more we get out of Twitter (which I often mistype as "tweeter" for some reason  ???), right?

This thread could also be used to discuss which famous person is actually interesting to follow and which ones just are no good. For instance, I appreciate Brian Michael Bendis' tweets (he's a big time comics writer for those not in the know). Another worth following is shitmydaysays: http://twitter.com/shitmydadsays which you need to read to believe how good it is.

Any other recommendations are welcomed!
