RPGs / Re: Scenario help - got a problem? Lets talk it out!
« on: August 02, 2013, 11:56:04 PM »
fortunately for me, the players have to go and do a Dead Space style thing - but with DAEMONS - so that is an easy way to throw in some Deus Ex Machina if need be.

The inter-departmental stuff is a good angle. The whole reason they killed this guy in the first place is because of internal politics within the Inquisition so I can build on that.

Thanks for the help guys!

I also decided after listening to your latest Night Black Agents game to have my players each write a separate report explaining their actions. I'm going to throw in some game theory, a.k.a if a player blames another person in the group they won't get punished but if they stick together they all will.

RPGs / Scenario help - got a problem? Lets talk it out!

Hey everyone, this is a great community full of lots of experienced players and GMs so I thought I would come here for some help in writing a scenario. I don't want to make a thread just for me though, so I thought it would be a good idea to create a topic where we can all share and discuss problems we are having with our games/campaigns from a writing standpoint.

My problem at the moment is that in the last session of my Dark Heresy campaign I'm currently running, the players violently murdered a minor antagonist. while this in itself is no big deal, there are extenuating circumstances which I am having trouble dealing with.

The first issue is that this antagonist they killed was a very powerful person who was not a 'bad guy', he was an Inquisitor who had a personal grudge against the player's Inquisitor (for those not familiar with Dark Heresy, the players all work for an Inquisitor - a figure with carte blanche to operate how they see fit in ridding the galaxy of threats of corruption). In setting, there is no way anyone would get away with killing someone with so much power without any negative repercussions.

Second issue is they killed this guy in front of a Judge (think Judge Dredd) and the captain of a spaceship (these guys are a BIG deal in Dark Heresy). While the standard operating procedure would be for the Judge to put a bullet in the player's skulls for this it would mean a very abrupt and unfulfilled ending to the campaign.

What I'd like to know from you intelligent people is: have you ever written yourselves into a corner and/or had your players throw you a curve ball you haven't been able to deal with straight away and if so, how have you handled it? I know getting advice for this particular problem with what little I've written above is a lot to ask; I'd just like to know if anyone has successfully dealt with similar situations in their own games.

We have a great community here - it would be a shame not to use it to make our games better

Know Remorse: A one shot Eclipse Phase game set in the Know Evil continuity
System: Eclipse Phase
Players Wanted: 4 players, but I plan to run this a number of times
Posting Rate: I'll run this over Skype so post your contact details or send me a message
Special Rules: There are pregenerated characters so all you need is the basic rules and some understanding of the Eclipse Phase setting
Advancement Rules: This is a one shot

Hi everybody, I'm looking for players to run through a one shot Eclipse phase game I wrote up after finishing listening to Know Evil. If you are interested in helping me turn this into something approaching a Con game then let me know. I've run it before so the goal is to work out all the kinks in it to make it as fun as possible

sounds like a fun game.

Just out of curiosity, have many people played games in the Know Evil Continuity? I consider it Canon to the Eclipse Phase 'verse myself

I just picked up a copy of Monsters and other Childish Things after enjoying all the APs of Road Trip

Here's my character - It's my first time playing MaoCT so it would be great if someone could look it over and make sure it's all good that would be great. I figured being an Aussie it would make sense to be an Australian who's parents moved to the US, it will make up for any idiosyncrasies in my roleplaying

Personality:
Shorty is really gross. he hides in my backpack and waits until I go to school, then he sneaks around and rolls in the mud or eats the neighbours pets if they are outside. He looks funny when he laughs because his belly is so loose it flops around under him, except when he just ate something then it looks like his dinner is trying to escapse from his tucker-bag. He once tried to help me with a girl a said I liked at school by eating her and then throwing her up when I met him down at the dam where we play - She was crying and ran away so I told him he should be more careful next time.
He likes to fart when I am telling jokes, all my friends think I smell really bad now so they don't like to talk to me alot but that's ok, Shorty is the only friend I need to have fun.

Favourite Thing:
lying in mud while digesting a still living BIG meal

I'd love to join this game! I live in Australia however so I'd only be able to join if you started your games around 5~6 EST because of how early it'll be over here.

I'm available tuesday through friday.

RPGs / Re: RPPR Listeners: Who gets to play on a regular basis?
« on: May 31, 2013, 11:28:09 PM »
I manage to run at least 1 game a week, currently it's a Dark Heresy investigation based game but a player in the group has finally stepped up and started running an Eclipse phase game.

Oh and occasionally I get to join in on a Star Wars Sith campaign but work tends to interfere with me getting to that one - all hail Cilghal, the Mon Calamari Sith Lord!

In the latest RPPR episode where Ross, Caleb and Tom talk about Know Evil, Ross mentioned that he was interested in having the characters from Know Evil show up as patrons or allies in other people's eclipse phase games.

I have just started playing in a campaign of eclipse phase and decided to make an Ultimate Async, but I was wondering if it would be ok if I had Bartleby as an enemy? I was thinking along the lines of my character either fucked up his cover in the Jovian Republic after taking to much MRDR (guess who recommended it to me?) or perhaps more extreme, I did something to his Beta fork with Alice.

I'd like to get the OK before I go ahead with this though, it wouldn't be right to just hijack someone else's character without their consent.

One thing I did pick up which you might find helpful is that certain districts of Tokyo tend to be shunned due to Genpatsu (radiation) since the tsunami. I'm not 100% sure but some of the areas around Shibuya are avoided because of this - I know I started to feel pretty sick after spending a couple of days in the area but that was probably psychosomatic.

Also, I don't know if it will help or not but Shibuya has a place called love hotel hill which is a literal hill covered in hotels where you pay by the hour and the rooms are all themed. could be a cool place to have clandestine meetings as many of these hotels don't even have staff in the lobby - it is all paid through vending machines.

Finally, Japan has a cool chain of shops called Don Quixote (abbreviated to Donkey) which pretty much sells everything under the sun, from electronics to b.b. guns to porno DvDs and are well known throughout the country for their good prices. Think of a multistory discount store with shamwows being sold next to adult toys and you get the right idea

You would think that would work, but not if they cant get around playing children. :(

Yeah that's the real problem so far. They like the idea of making their own monsters (I told them its a little like Wild Talents character creation) but they have pretty much zero interest in playing children

I just re-listened to the episode yesterday and now I really want to listen to Ross run his game of Night's Black Agents set in Tokyo.

I'm going to pick up a copy of the book Ross mentioned concerning the different social groups in Japanese youth because that aspect of Japanese society really interests me, but I wanted to say a little something as I've lived in Japan for a while and know a little about how young people behave over there.

While many people think of Japan as having these crazy sub-cultures (and they do) over the past 10 years Japan has begun to shift the way their employment of young people into the workforce from long-term employment with full benefits - a.k.a. the traditional concept of the salaryman - to the more westernised concept of casual employment. This has led to a change in the way young Japanese people view joining the workforce and how they act in their own social groups. These social groups, which were once a method for young people to rebel against the traditional institution of life-long employment within a single organisation have become less rebellious to some extent, and are now more like a coping mechanism for dealing with the realization that they may never get to have one of these safe jobs.

There is much more to it than that of course, but the general feel I got from these different social groups when I was over there was young people joined them much like any other westerner would join a club or sporting team in order to meet new people and have fun, the notion that these fringe groups where is some way 'sticking it to the man' was not really supported by any of the people I met over there.

I hope this helps. If there is anything else you think I might be able to help with I'd be more than happy to answer questions. just for clarification, I spent 4 months studying in a Japanese town a couple of hours away from Tokyo so my experiences with these fringe groups is pretty diluted but i met a few people who were part of these groups.

I've downloaded Cthulhu Dark
bought a copy of A Dirty World
and just picked up A Quiet Year

will probably end up buying Road Trip if I can persuade my players to play as kids in a game

RPGs / Re: GM/Player Dynamic
« on: February 25, 2013, 10:28:01 PM »
As someone who has GMd almost every single game I have ever been in, I would say that my ability to run games has certainly been hampered by this fact. While I can make a story which players enjoy because I have been with the same group for a couple of years now I am only just realising many of my shortcomings as a GM.

One thing I have begun to notice is that I tend to fall into the habit of running games I would like to play in because these are the ones I am most interested in. Many times I have had to change my games drastically because the players are losing interest and this cascades as I lose interest in running games which the players want and then the cycle repeats itself.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that players moving to a GM role have a better inherent knowledge of what mechanically needs to be included in a game to make it enjoyable while those who jump straight into the role of a GM can be at a disadvantage due to this.

On the other hand, those who are new to RPGs who aren't hampered by these accepted conceptions of what a game should be tend to be able to create games which are enjoyable because they are so different to what is normally run.

This is what I've found in my limited experience so I'm sure my view will be different to other more experienced players but I hope it at least makes sense

Thanks mate, those tips are really good. I'll definitely incorporate a lot of what you've said in my games.
