RPGs / WE MUST NEVER SHOW THIS TO TOM
« on: June 05, 2014, 06:45:47 AM »
Stomping Lands, the multiplayer survival game with dinosaurs.

Seriously.

We won't hear from him for months.

Don't you do it.

WITH. DINOSAURS.

Edit: Somehow got this posted in the RPG subforum, when it clearly belongs under General Chaos. If a mod could rectify this error, then that would be just super.

Topic.

I wanted to thank you guys for the bonus AP of Channel A. I was bicycling while listening to it, and I nearly ended up going off of the road with laughter. I would not have been disappointed if you had posted it as part of your regular schedule.

Only now, I want to watch Drive Code: Angel Fist. Where Purgatory is racing cars. Under a constant barrage of angelic fists. ;D

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: What AP would you like RPPR to do?
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:49:14 AM »
Look, I love World of Darkness, especially New World of Darkness. And I don't want to have to listen (and I would have to listen) to the RPPR guys stumble their way through Mage. It's a complex game with complex open ended powers.

Do you honestly think that anything good could possibly come from Tom Church having Life magic? And Aaron? Jason actually knows how to play the New World of Darkness, imagine the chaos that may rain down upon all. God have mercy if Caleb was able to get hold of improvised casting, look what he comes up with without magical powers in A Dirty World.

And poor Ross would have to try and manage that chaotic mess while still trying to give the game a goal of some kind.

No, no. It should not come to pass.

That sounds even better than a Lady Gaga 2.0 sequel! I hope they decide to play at least a short series of Mage games.

Think of it as a stimulus package for Delta Green and the SCP Foundation.

Caleb running Better Angels will be more grimdark than any vampire or zombie game.

Ohhh yes.  ;D It will be amazing.

Better Angels! I'd love to see the RPPR crew try their hands at over-the-top villainy.

If not, then maybe MaOCT. I'm just burnt out on the vampire stuff, and the zombie stuff wasn't that appealing to me in the first place.

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: eclipse phase! where to start?
« on: October 17, 2012, 06:50:43 AM »
The Posthuman guys offer free downloads of all Eclipse Phase material released thus far under a Creative Commons license, so you could get all of it legally and for free, and then buy it later if you feel you want to support them.

The big thing with Eclipse Phase is that it is complex. Most sci-fi settings are "like today, but with X" or at most, "like this other popular setting, but with X." EP has all kinds of different sci-fi and transhuman elements mashed up in it, so it's going to be difficult for new players to understand it all. If you want to make it a little more manageable while introducing new players, you should make the game more plot-driven, so that they always have a clear idea of what to do.

Another thing is that character creation is a little bit obtuse. There's a bit of mathematics involved and a lot of different options, and if you want to go back and change something in the middle of creation, you may have to recalculate a lot of derived values. On the plus side, there is a handy spreadsheet that helps streamline the process, and also a good variety of sample PCs in the various sourcebooks.

RPPR has some good resources on EP. There was a podcast episode dedicated to Eclipse Phase,  and if you check the AP archives, you'll find that Ross ran an introductory game, where he solved these problems. If I were to introduce new players at this point, I'd probably run them through that, or something close to it.

Finally, there's the official Eclipse Phase forum. It's a great place to look for inspiration and ask for advice.

Good luck!

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: Upcoming RPPR One Shot games

I posted this as a campaign suggestion at one point:

Rogue Trader: The House of Gaga

The player characters are Lady Gaga the 117th and her command staff of misfit performance artists, commanding a vessel for the once-great House of Gaga Rogue Trader Dynasty. They and their star clipper have been cast by the vicissitudes of the Warp into the far reaches of the Koronus Expanse. Armed with nothing but avant-garde performance skills, raw animal magnetism and a cargo hold full of illicit hallucinogens of an unknown Xenos origin, they must make their way home and redeem the name of their house.

August: Gencon, Ross was setting up his new kickstarter, and his new campaign. I just think he was simply  too busy to post more APs.

Oh yeah, Gencon! I don't keep track of when that is, because I live on the other side of the pond. But yes, that makes a ton and a half of sense. Didn't he GM six games in one day last year? A pillar of the community, that man.

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: What if Cody came back?
« on: August 29, 2012, 07:24:47 AM »
I am almost afraid to find out where the RPPR crew would take He-Man, so that's my vote. Maybe Caleb could reprise his wildly successful role as Lady Gaga 2.0, or Tom could play some kind of Cthunian horror monster, or Ross could play a descendant of Bartleby Bigglesworth the anarchist barbarian. ;D

But honestly, just more Cody in general would be neat. There really are no bad choices here. Awesome to have him back on the show.

Thank you very much for the welcome, but it might not be appropriate. I have in fact been listening to the podcasts for more than a year, and I've caught up on all the games you suggested. And might I add, you missed Tom's hilarious one-shot of Lady Gaga 2.0, which I am told it is mandatory to include in any list of suggested APs. ;)

I'm still catching up on Know Evil, so I'm not quite out of gaming smack to put into my veins. I'm expecting great things from the bank job. I seem to recall hearing on the main podcast that it took a turn for the greasy. ;D

Topic.

There's been only two new AP episodes this last month, as compared to six the month before. Should we be expecting less new content from RPPR in the future? Is there an actual schedule planned out in advance?

RPGs / Re: Need Advice: trying new things

Talk to your players. Find out what they like about your game and what they don't like. Give them a game which offers that, without requiring a lot of commitment on their part. That probably entails some prep work on your part, like rolling up a batch of pregens for them to choose from and giving a clear, concise explanation of the rules.

Update: Thanks for the advice you guys!  :D

Analyzing this situation I've to a conclusion. My group is easily influenced by what they are playing (video game wise) and watching at the moment.

Find out what's the new thing they're watching or playing, and make a game about it or that's thematically similar to it. Whatever it is, there's going to be a system that can do it much, much better than DnD.  :)

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: "The RPGA does what?"
« on: December 02, 2011, 05:55:38 PM »
I think that, because of the lack of power balance between different classes and builds in DnD, that game can facilitate both play styles at once and in the same game. So a casual gamer who wants guarranteed survival and continuity could build with all the splatbooks and with help from the experienced players at the table, and the more Gygaxian, old school-types can limit themselves to Core-only single class builds, with their dubious survivability and added challenge value.

I hope it isn't too late to offer up a campaign idea, because I just had this ridiculous notion that came to me in a fever dream. I call it Rogue Trader: House of Gaga.  ;D

The House of Gaga, once a great and powerful Rogue Trader Dynasty, has since fallen into ill-fortune and disrepute. Now, cast into the Koronus Expanse by the vicissitudes of the Warp, and armed with nothing but a dilapidated old trading vessel, personal magnetism and a cargo hold full of hallucinogenic drugs, it falls to Lady Gaga the 117th and her ragtag crew of misfits to restore the family name and find a way home.
