I forgot about Burning Empires.

I was able to play the Burning Empire game on saterday.

We started with a 'World Burning' which was basicly the players/gm brainstorming the world.  There were a series of questions the gm went through, what part of the galaxy do you want to play on.  Think Star wars Coruscant vs Tatooine vs serenity outer rim.  Next was Planet type, including enviroment, goverment, crime, religion etc.  After a few more steps we started working on some characters that would be involved in that world.

We pulled characters from that list to start making our characters.  We didn't have a chance to finish character creation and we wanted to play through a quick scene, so we did that before we broke for the day.  We plan to play again this weekend with characters were building up at home.

The character creation process is pretty intresting, Im not quite done yet, but it seems to be heavly involved with life paths that define your characters history/back story.  So far its a very interesting game world!

I will post more as the game progresses.

I have played mouseguard once, it was a adhoc game run at a game store primarly to expose players and their kids to the game.  I was playing with my five year old, and another fellow was playing with his eight year old son.  My daughter was a bit young for it, but it wasn't so much over her head she was clueless, just pushing her limits a bit.  She is a fairly well raised geek kid, so its not like this is some 'normal' five year old off the street.  The eight year old seemed to really get into the game, was grasping the rules and had no problems following along.  The session was only thirty minutes long, but we had alot of fun.  My daughter still remembers it a month later and wants to play again.

The GM wants to start a burning empire game, but I don't think I will be able to attend due to my schedule departure from the states in a few months.  If I do though i will post here with my thoughts.  I believe that burning empire is based on buring wheel core rules, but im not 100% on this...

More great ideas!  Real maps, hand made dolls!  This is the stuff that I think can really bring a good game into great game!

I don't know if I'd repeat this. The first one was done so haphazardly that it adds to the character. If I tried to do it again I'd probably try to make it perfect and thus fuck it up.

The reason I asked was I was thinking of trying something similar, just to see how it turned out.

My hats off to you Robotkarateman!  That has to be the finest game prop I have ever seen!

The art work alone is well thought out and put togeather in a way that had I not known you made it I would have assumed a copy of some other real book, the wash out of the images adds a very 'real' look to it.  A few pages of such a work would have still been very impressive, but you have about 20 pages I think!

What type of paper did you use?  It looks like it was above standard grade paper, yes?  Did you pratice at all with the water and smearing the pictures or no?  If you were going to repeat something like it what would you have done differently?

Again, very impressive!!

I was once asked in the middle of class to explain where I learned 'obfuscate' from, which was a White Wolf Vampire game, specificly a LARP.  Not the easiest thing to explain to a group of people in a sentence or two.

I think RP games in general taught me there is always options in life.  If you don't like the ones your given make your own options and run with them.

Also it helped me realize that fitting in, or being 'normal' was over rated.

@ristarr:  I look forward to hearing how it turns out.  I like the idea of multiple paths you have created to tackle or solve the problems created by the war.

@Everyone:  What type of difference do you see in presenting a war from different era's?  Is it simply two options, ancient and modern, split around WWI technology or are their shades in there somewhere?  Has anyone seen a war played out in a future setting, such as Shadowrun or Starwars?

In the unlikely event anyone was patiently waiting for more maps, I have to appologize for taking so long, my home life has been a little hectic lately so I haven't had time to update this more.  I do still plan on doing so soon though.

Brief conversation between Locke and Pontifex:  Ep 10, approximately 37 min mark:

*This is just my summary of the conversation not the exact words spoken, but as I am listening to it concurrently it should be the 'meaning' behind what their saying.  Let me know if anyone thinks I missed something or interpreted it wrong.  Thx :*)

Pontifex:  "I realize why your group had such a problem with me, with taking my furniture earlier... you see I have been use to working with all the natives, they view me as a force of nature.  You don't argue with a rain storm and you certainly don't steal from the sun.  Which is why I never bothered to put more security on it, because I forgot that you wouldn't know about me, but do you know why they view me like a force of nature?"

Locke:  "Umm... Why is that?"

Pontifex:  "Well... Once upon a time there was a tribe that displeased me.  They were worshiping Orcus, umm, do you know Orcus?"

Locke:  "no."

Pontifex:  "He is a very powerful demon lord, claims to be the lord of the undead.  They paid homage to me because I am undead and blah blah blahh, but I technically pay homage Vecna, the god of secrets, who is also a litch and a god.  I am not very faithful, its more of a quid pro quo, but any way, I was disgusted by them, they were causing all kinds of problems in the near by environment and distracting me from my studies, so I with a few allies went there and killed every adult in their tribe and then I gave all their children away to enemies of their tribe.  To replace the ones they had sacrificed to Orcus.  So a few thousand dead in a night, so since then the tribes have been remarkably good about staying clear of me...  "

Locke:  "...  good..."

Pontifex:  "So tell me how good is the Raven Queen... are you satisfied with her as a goddess?"

Locke:  “Umm… Defiantly!”

Pontifex:  “I just have to ask, out of respect to Vecna, who wants always more cults and faithful, but honestly I can’t stand zealots of any type, even of my own faith because they are just so boorish.

Locke:  “I believe that the Raven Queen teaches us that from one life into the next there is not such thing as death, really,” Pontifex laughs softly, “its just death is a passage into something else… and so I find that comforting”

Pontifex:  “Yes, and if you don’t like going into the next stage you can always find a way to aaah, override it.”

Locke:  “Yeah.”

Pontifex:  “Well, yes, let me know, use your familiar ‘Patario’ to send me any messages.  Make sure to recruit the scribe as we will need him.”

I choose this section of conversation because it deals directly with the section of time I am interested in writing to, namely the culling of the tribe that disgusted Pontifex.  If anyone has any more information about that point in time let me know here please.

Cheers,

-Scott
