RPGs / Re: An Opening Vignette for my Next Session (CoC)
« on: October 08, 2011, 10:19:07 AM »
I've recently started a sort of mini-campaign of CoC for my players that takes place in the present. Right now they are about 1/3 in and I wanted to break things up by starting the next session with a (hopefully) short vignette.

What I am thinking of doing is having them wake up as a person who is already being held prisoner by the "cult" they are headed to. The prisoner wakes with little or no recollection of who they are or how they got there (hence no need for back story), but attempts to sneak out of his cell (which someone has left a way out of), and ultimately can meet up with the PCs later, or simply be recaptured, and...  ;)

What I am wondering is this, how shall I split up the character between my players? Should I simply do a time share (you have five minutes, then pass to the next player), or is there a more creative solution I am not thinking of?

Has anyone done something like this before? Any input is appreciated!

You could have more than one prisoner try escaping...have one for every player. Do a mass escape...roleplay it a little while, at least until they do get out. Then have the escapee's realize one in their midst might be in with the cultists...a squid in sheeps clothing, so to speak.

The second they realize something is fishy...

Switch out of the vignette and back to the regular game.

During the escape phase, make sure to never actually describe who's who of the prisoners (or make them all the same...20 something brunettes fer instance), so the investigators will have to suss out who the bad apple is. Of course all the other prisoners will be dead or recaptured by the time one of them comes running up to them, begging for help, covered in chum.

That's my input at least.

I have an idea for a post-apocalyptic campaign - not a hard crash but a gradual collapse of civilization. Instead of a Road Warrior or Fallout barren wasteland, imagine endless shanty towns, sprawl, refugee camps and shadow cities for most of humanity and fortified green zones for the privileged elite. Makers and fabricators spewing out pirated video games and AK-47s. Rumors of unnatural things in hot zones - the areas humans can't survive because of rampant pollution and toxic waste which was released by freakish weather or terrorist attacks. Sightings of an Armageddon Beast - an unstoppable killing machine that wanders the world, destroying everything it can. Husks - animate clothing that stalks the fringes and said to worship an impossibly tall man in a suit. There are zombies out there, but they're the least of your problems.

As long as it has bands of Ned Beatty worshippin', inbred, mouthbreathing hordes of mutant rape gangs, I'm all in.

No seriously...it sounds very much like a 'thinking man's' nightmare Rifts and a Stephan King's The Stand mash up. Intriguing. Genre bending.

people that play rpgs want to have immature power fantasies and not an engaging high-stakes narrative

What's wrong with that once in a while?
Life can suck...why let it bleed into your fantasy life all the time?

I am on hiatus as far as Call of Cthulhu goes...played it almost exclusively for the last 20 years, I'm burnt out.

I am cheesing on some power gaming now, it doesn't have to be stupid, even if...who cares.
I've been running Nightbane- where my players are ripping the heads off vampires, pulverizing juggalos by the dozen, all while delving into a Clive Barker-ishian nightmare world.

It's thusfar been a nice mix of blood soaked humor, serious intrigue and super powered supernatural chop-socky, monster-squad-beatdown action.

It's energized both me and my gaming group...in fact it's brought a long lost, gamer pal out of a long time, family man hibernation.

To each his own I say....game snobbery isn't for me.

Oh and....
BRP can be re-tooled into a more higher powered ruleset. It's not hard, especially if you  have the Big Gold Brick BRP Book. Just allow bullet dodgery and the characters to use the optional Power roll rules (Example: they can spend 6 power points to re-roll any roll and whatnot).

BRP-It's probably the best rules light gamesystem out there...very long lived....

He is. His pants have MD armor and mega-cockels, descibe the name, are SD.

After listening to the AP I have an idea for a movie where a guy wakes up naked and bloody in the middle of a corn field and has flash backs involving nightmarish visions of horror. As he chases down his past trying to rebuild his memories while perserving his sanity he uncovers a string of mutilated people and mental patients with broken minds leading back to a single, seemingly normal suburban home.

And it turns out he played Rifts.

I listened...and mulled....twas a farce of a Rifts game fer sure. :o
I couldn't help but imagine all the action taking place in the Eliminator setting...except for the raptor punching batman that is. ;D

Anyhoo...thanks Ross for posting it. :)

I'm still semi-curious as to what arrived in the grab bag.  ???

I'm going to order one myself for x-mas. 8)

I came up with a Call of Cthulhu scenario that took place at a gaming conention...the investigators were all game nerds.

In fact, little did they know they were hapless victims in "Bring the nerdiest dork to the party" contest perpetrated by cos-play/furry/Larp sex cultists.

The nerdiest nerd was going to be ritual sacrificed in a blood orgy.  I had a whole list of randomized nerd traits.

Oh and yeah...there was roleplaying roleplay within the game.

I think if you channelled Heavy Metal magazine with it's weird environs, buxom hunnies and wacked-out, alien weirdness, rather than the typical Rift fanboy cliche', you could have a truly epic, non-ridiculous game.  Heavy Metal Magazine  Just look at some of these covers...plenty of killer Rift ideas!

I've only played Rifts once, I do own the main book, but have yet to play or run it. But if I did...it'd be something right out of a Heavy Metal mag...complete with soundtrack...(Black Sabbath:Mob Rules!! Helll anything RJD)
The Mob Rules

Neon Knights

The idea of running a Glitter Boy never occured to me. Seems kinda boring, totally lacking in any interesting roleplay potential (unless blowing the crap out of stuff is your version of roleplay).

Something more exotic or esoteric would suit my tastes more...something psi, mutant or maybe wizardly on the run and/or seeking knowledge.

Or for that matter maybe a Robocop-ish, haunted borg with the soul of a man, theme.

I think it's up to the players...Rifts doesn't have to always devolve into a mega-damage, death orgy. Rifts can have a soul....just look past the cliche'.

Moondog...how could that game not continue?

It sounded pretty fun and very much in the spirit of the cartoon show.

Anyway thanks for the great tale.

Oh and as a kid...Moondog's Rex and Spot were my favorite pro wrestlers...Moondog was the name of my very first D&D character as well.

What about the Rifts game which was supposed to have spawned from episode 52...aka Palladium Grab Bag experiment?

there's nothing wrong with the Palladium settings. If they had usable game mechanics, I'd play them.

I haven't had any problems with the Palladium system thusfar...of course I haven't been playing Rifts. Which I guess the whole Mega-damage vs. regular damage mechanic is a huge problem.

Palladium-wise, I am really liking the mechanics, the back and forth, punch, dodge, parry, shoot and roll is extremely cinematic.

I really am getting a kick out of interpreting the actions for my players...it was actually quite thrilling with the Nightbane getting put through a wall, missed punches shattering plaster and both Nightbane and foe falling after wrestling their way out a 2nd story window.

Anyway...keep up the good work. :o
