You wake up in a small room. It's 10 feet on a side, roughly cubical, and there are two doors leading in opposite directions.

General Chaos / 100 Hat puzzle.
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:20:10 PM »
I'm engaged in a ridiculous facebook war right now over the following puzzle. It's obvious to me that I'm not only right, I'm mega right. But this has not stopped the post in question from having like 40 responses, and me being the only one with logic powers bold enough to see the obvious solution in front of me.

As an exercise, I wanted to see how well you guys would succeed or fail at said puzzle.

This is a slightly different wording that the one being discussed on facebook, but the solution, problem ,and provisos are all the same.'
Quote
One hundred persons will be lined up single file, facing north. Each person will be assigned either a red hat or a blue hat. No one can see the color of his or her own hat. However, each person is able to see the color of the hat worn by every person in front of him or her. That is, for example, the last person in line can see the color of the hat on 99 persons in front of him or her; and the first person, who is at the front of the line, cannot see the color of any hat.

Beginning with the last person in line, and then moving to the 99th person, the 98th, etc., each will be asked to name the color of his or her own hat. If the color is correctly named, the person lives; if incorrectly named, the person is shot dead on the spot. Everyone in line is able to hear every response as well as hear the gunshot; also, everyone in line is able to remember all that needs to be remembered and is able to compute all that needs to be computed.

Before being lined up, the 100 persons are allowed to discuss strategy, with an eye toward developing a plan that will allow as many of them as possible to name the correct color of his or her own hat (and thus survive). They know all of the preceding information in this problem. Once lined up, each person is allowed only to say “Red” or “Blue” when his or her turn arrives, beginning with the last person in line.

Your assignment: Develop a plan that allows as many people as possible to live. (Do not waste time attempting to evade the stated bounds of the problem — there’s no trick to the answer.)

There are 2 solutions. One is correct, the other is technically correct, but in violation of the spirit of the rules.

No googling. =)

General Chaos / RPPR recommended Literature. (also romance novels)
« on: November 25, 2010, 02:03:30 AM »

Harry Potter for adults. This is not a children's book. It is about growing up and going to to a wizard school. Enjoy.

Devoured it in an afternoon. Engaging from start to finish. A+++ would read again.

The title alone suggests an interesting read.

So here is how this thread should work. Recommend an actual book, and then find a truly terrible or hysterical looking romance novel. Post them here, along with a review, however brief. (No one expects any people to have actually read any romance novels. It's just for fun.)

Lets talk about books people.

General Chaos / The RPPR radio.

What are you listening to these days? Or right now. Frequent updates of this thread are to be appreciated. Bashing others taste in music is verboten. Praising others taste in music is bueno. Yes it's a double standard.

DEAL WITH IT!

PS. Expect Ross to post indie tecno house jamz so obscure he was listening to them before they were cool....yo.

PPS. Don't you dare disappoint me Ross.

I'm considering starting some sort of interview process whereby I/we ask questions to RPPR players, as well as Forum personalities(Order66 comes to mine, alas it shan't be) and then we post the answers here.

I would index them for ease of read below as it started (with accompanying discussion of course) to become multi-page.

Is there a demand for this. Yea or Nea?

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Vox Ut Verum (Skype game)
« on: July 25, 2010, 01:12:31 AM »
I will be running a skype game for interested players Monday night at 7pm CST. It might be a regular thing.

Game is Mutants & Masterminds.

PL 7 105pps.

Characters are somewhere between high school age, and young adults(grad students). These people have been selected for a special "internship" with a multinational corporation. Feel free to individualize why you were selected for the internship. Some players might be marketing interns and some might be business interns, etc. (these are examples. Be creative. It's a Laaaaarge multinational)

At max, you may spend 90pps. At least, you may spend 50pps before hand. No powers, as they will be provided you early in the session.  Please try to have your character ready beforehand. The earlier you PM me your character sheet, the more prepared and detailed your powers will be.

Please use my M&M template, and total all your power points before hand.

Please also have a paragraph or two of backstory, and any vital statistics.

Looking for 4-6 players, but I will take more if the concept is good enough. I know this is short notice, if people are having trouble, i will be available all day tomorrow.

My gmail is rayejaye@gmail.com. Email or PM me with questions.

It's 2010 in a world nearly identical to the real one. No super powers, and no real super science to speak of. Veritas Pharmaceuticals, part of the Dreyland-Magnus portfolio, (Dreyland-Magnus is a Fortune 10 holding company and multinational investment firm) is hiring. Stock options, Health, Dental, 3 weeks paid vacation, and 120,000 dollar salary out of the gate. They have two dozen of these "internships", and as you can imagine in this rundown economy, the competition  is fierce. They've received tens of thousands of applicants, because their application was vague, unspecified, and mentioned specifically that they would "Seriously entertain all inquiries. No medical experience necessary. Applicants from all fields and levels of experience needed." It seems too good to be true, but the last time they did this was in the late 80's, and those interns went on to become titans of industry, CEO's and celebrities. They all credit Veritas with their success.

You have been selected. The job offered seems tailor made to your skills and interests.

Welcome to Veritas Industries. Veritas. Truth. Health. American IngenuityTM solving the World's Problems.
Veritas Industries is a subsidiary of Dreyland-Magnus. Warning: "Truth" may differ from objective facts in our rational universe. Disclaimer: American Ingenuity, a trademark of Dreyland-Magnus, may be exported to overseas job markets as required to stay globally competitive.

General Chaos / Back from Vacation in 4 days.
« on: June 03, 2010, 11:50:22 PM »
I know i dissipated into nothing about a week ago, but we kind of had to take an emergency family vacation, we planned with like a weeks notice, and i'm in the middle of it right now.

This mostly applies to the play by post people, but I'll be back fully in like 4 days.

The next couple of days are going to be by the beach, so I may have a little bit more free time. So I may get some light posting done.

I have many gamer related stories for later.

Most of you have gotten moving.

Post what you have so far here.

Post where you need help.

By Saturday, everyone's characters will be finalized and point shaved, and ready to go. We should also start posting some description and backstory for them, and we can work on their starting relationships with one another.

First Mission spoiler : Iceland.
