Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: Cthulhu game for newbies?

I would recommend Victim of the Art with the gumeshoe system.  I've run it multiple times.  The one way I found that I've run new players is to run the module as the news crew investigation the murders.  People get to throw around a ton of investigative points and the supernatural aspect slowly along with the threat of the dg and majestic agents.

If you can bet your hands on pagan publishing Bumps in the Night, the scenario Vengeful Dead is a great spin in the zombie trope and is great in CoC and Gumshoe.

So my table group has started what will be a recurring Base Radiers game (one-shots when we're not on a main campaign).  I started them on The Bayou Beatdown because I personally loved it and it was a really fun and creative introduction to the system.  Anyway, my players made off with the functioning Confederate ship.   I admit I was dumb for not anticipating it.  The party was split and one half was fighting the bad guys and the other half hid in the ship and then rolled stupidly high to get it working.

So I gave it to them rather than look like I was just saying 'no' regardless of the dice.  So...how much loot points is the Confederate ship worth, Ross?  I'm worried it would let them buy a shit ton of powers but I also don't want to say 'Oh yeah, its only worth a little bit.'  My only thought that doesn't feel like a give away or robbery is saying that it's their new mobile lair?

I've played D&DNext and it doesn't seem all that bad to me.  Granted, it's not Dungeon World.

I like where they've gone with Feats.  They give a nice bump and aren't necessarily class specific.

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: Why I Love Tom Church
« on: May 26, 2014, 03:51:38 AM »
So this evening I played in an Atomic Robo RPG module run by Mike Olsen himself.  In the module I played a pregen uplifted octopus super scientist who I dubbed Professor Crowley.

Fast forward to the end of the module.  At the apex of the Aztec pyramid in Mexico City, Professor Crowley used a spare iphone to hack Undead Edision's (or Undeadison) legion of microbots and wrestled away control of them.  Crowly then programmed the microbots to assume the form a kracken and screamed "Release the Kraken!" and had the robotic kraken sweep the horde of vampires back through the portal into the vampire dimension before it closed.  And when the portal closed with Crowley's super soldier Triceratops partner on the other side, marooning him in the vampire dimension, Crowley ordered the kracken to rip Undead Edision in two.

I've never read Atomic Robo so must of it went over my head but a giant twenty foot tall robotic horde kracken was created and unleashed in your honor Mr. Church.

I ran the game Friday night and it was a smashing success.  The Goblin Hulk is perfect for dungeon World as it fits with the system's 'anything can happen' mentality.  Highlights include:

Guys next to us (playing palladium robotech) stepping away from their game to ask "did you say a minute ago there was a zombie dolphin pinned to a bar?"  Me: "Yeah, with a harpoon."  To which they replied 'you still got any open seats?"  Sadly I did not but I did give them the rppr site address.

PC accidentally turning another pc's rapier into a sentient rapier which I immediately rp'd as Sparkles.

PCs got sidetracked from their escape from the prison deck in the crew deck by joining pit fights for gold.

PC playing the princess bought their  battle unicorn back from pontifex (who was onboard for a unicorn auction) in exchange for the bones of the princess's dead subjects.

PCs killed the mage on the orlop deck in a fight after the mage refused to bargain with one of the magic users in the group and said PC through a dagger at the mage.

I began describing bones of the elder dragon in the side of the ship as a result of the dragon crashing into the ship and the corpse getting incorporated into the hull.  A few players had this look of 'what is this madness?  Who wrote this?!"

All in all, amazing.  I will be running it again next con.

Just ran Vengeful Dead out of Bumps in the Night.  None of the three players had ever played CoC before.  One of them has only been role-playing for a month.  One of the pregens I made was Lord Bigglesworth.  He was picked of course and the player would have made you proud Caleb.  He actually got to use a cavalry saber and a Webley revolver on the revenants while completely cool and British in the crisis.
