Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: Timeline of Eclipse Phase
« on: August 03, 2014, 03:29:39 AM »
I mentioned this in the comments for Duality 01, but based on the position of bodies in the Solar System and other things, people have narrowed the time of Eclipse Phase to between 2150-2190. Bit of a big window, but matches your guess pretty well.

On the topic of reading recommendations, are there any must-reads for getting an understanding of espionage techniques/developing planning abilities for realistic espionage?

It's called "listening to Caleb and doing as he does".

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: Upcoming RPPR One Shot games
« on: March 30, 2013, 02:04:02 AM »
The Walking Eye did an excellent series of APs, and I've ran a little MH myself. It's a lovely little game with HS drama and supernatural shit mixed in. Might be a little weird for the RPPR crew, don't know how much they've played these indie narrativist games. I mean, the GM rolls no dice, shit only happens from the GM when the players fuck up or the players aren't driving themselves for a bit.

Actually nevermind, it's a great idea. Even if they don't play the game well an AP of it would be hilarious to listen to.

That is true. It's a seldom pointed out rule that doesn't have to be used if it doesn't make sense. Also an elemental should presumably have the Native extra meaning the power cannot be negated by (nearly)any means.

Either way one of the reasons I like WT is that it lets you apply rules when they make sense, and only if.

Well, you've got a point about Native Power (A handy little extra that takes care of nullify) which does balance a cost for Daze, but I would still probably lean more toward not letting just regular Daze reduce Endless or Permanent pools unless it was also Endless/Permanent or made sense. Bending the rules to suit the fiction is sometimes for the better, and y'know Ross does it in HNA from time to time. Other times he bends rules because he's a horrible (lazy) monster.

I'm actually with Tim B on this one. If Daze effects Duration/Endless/Permanent like that (without the Daze power having a comparable extra), this means that you can technically shoot a player with a tazer or flash bang him, and somehow reduce the effectiveness of his hardened bones or body armor, or suddenly make people who are intrinsically impervious to like, toxins or fire not immune. Duration I'm less caught up in, but Endless and Permanent are a big deal. And as much as I love WT for how it lets you mechanically model just about anything as a miracle, I'm not a huge fan of letting the crunch automatically triumph over the fluff of a game, especially if it makes no inherent sense.

An elemental with 2hd in (Immune to Fire) shouldn't suddenly become flammable just because I poked it with a stun gun or shot it with a sleep dart.

I think it's 5hd in mind plus 5d in Super Science!

Nah, pretty sure he was rolling raw Mind checks at 5d+5hd, at points. Which is way cooler since it means that if James/Green Goo slept he would continue to think up cool new things even then. But instead James is just constantly trying to find the Unified Theory of Everything(mancy) 1/100th of a second at a time.

Rimward. Space Pope. Thoughts?

Also, Nine Lives is run by Transhuman Voodoo Priests.

Role Playing Public Radio Podcast / Re: D&D Next

After having played DNext I can say it feel like the team exist to support the Wizard.

Well, let's be honest, DnD Next had Monte Cook for a lead designer for a while there, and he is well known for his opinion that the Wizard is the best class and the only one you should be playing.

It's coming, but probably not in the way you are thinking.  I am planning it, but due to some input from Ross and Caleb, any further Lady Gaga material will be set in Eclipse Phase.  Call it Lady Gaga v. 3000.2.  Or whatever.   In any case, it will be the band and road crew, flying the unfriendly space, and probably doing a lot of gatecrashing in the name of fame and entertainment.  Not to mention a whole helping of violence and "aggressive negotiation".  I plan to have it up in the next four weeks or so, and may start as soon as Ross gets back from his trip in May.  Stay tuned for more updates.

Heh, funny thing, but Lady Gaga (Or at least someone with her real name, Angelina Germanotta) is actually canon in EP. In connection to gatecrashing too, as she's mentioned in the book of the same name as the leader of the Carnivale colony.

Not that I don't want more Gaga v.af10, I just thought it was funny that you decided to switch to EP and EP is like "already here, bro.".

I would pay big money to see an Eclipse Phase anime

As would we all, Ross. As would we all.

Another trope I want to challenge is the idea of a single apocalyptic event changing everything. The closest we've ever been to a real apocalypse is the Black Death and that wasn't a single instantaneous event - it was a gradual apocalypse reaching different regions at different times. There was also a lot of ambiguity as people didn't have the right information to understand what was going or react accordingly.

Honestly, the Black Plague was only an apocalypse in term of a body count and area. There were even multiple outbreaks over a period of time. It definitely changed people's world view, but not in the way most people probably think of today, or appears in a lot of post-apoc fiction. It was the dark ages, for most people life was shitty before, shittier during and slightly less shitty again after.

You want something that has correlations to most apocalyptic fiction, try the fall of the Roman Empire. That was a paradigm-shifter for most of Europe, and not all of a sudden. But it would have seemed similar to a lot of post-apoc fiction we have today. Also, it was a gradual chain of events, like you said.
