Tried making my first lol pic yesterday. It didn't catch on, but maybe Ross will appreciate it.

I will? I'm not catching the reference.

A bit of Frankenstein / Zombie humor. I'm going to have to spell it out for you, aren't I... :( "Reanimating the dead." Damn, I thought I had a good one there. *sigh*

Don't get me wrong, it's a good read, just requires a bit of backtracking every now and then. I guess most RPG books do.

So, just to make sure I understand, let's say I put 3 build points into the ability "Reassurance". During a story, I would automatically reassure some foxy dame enough to continue the story and gain a clue, just for having the ability.

But if I spend 1 of those 3 points, I could potentially (keeper allowing) make her think I'm a damned hero and she'll give me some money or tell me some more info, etc. Yes? I'd only get back up to 3 in that ability after the game finishes, and the abilities refresh.

I'll have to read some scenarios, see what they say.

So I picked up the Trail of Cthulhu rulebook, mostly because it's CoC but also because it got so many awards. I was surprised to find out that it's actually a bit difficult to read! They tell you how to make a character using build points, yes, but the amount of points you put into general abilities was only mentioned once in the middle of a paragraph in an obscure place so it was difficult to find again. They do that thing where they put framed sections of text that are an aside to the main read, but that means there can be very little of it to read on one page.

And when I did get that, it was difficult to understand the concept of spending pool points on checks. I'm still not sure I do understand that! Pool points are drawn from where you spend your build points? Yes, it makes sense I suppose (you get less focus on something if you use that skill a lot?), but it's just not very clear from the book.

You know that may be true. There's a related new form 'Let's Play' guided walkthroughs of video games. They are getting to be quite popular and some LPers have extremely dedicated fanbases. I find it fascinating that interactive storytelling forms have become linear storytelling forms through APs and LPs.

Yeah, but I think it's the fact that you're witnessing the way a story develops, even though it turns out linearly, and knowing it could have happened differently. There's a creative element that's really important. I like listening to the birthing of ideas and creativity, it really gets my mind going.

That does sound neat. "What did you learn today, Prince Adam?" "Never let Skeletor get his hands on the Power Sword, even if you have to hold it while using the bathroom."

Is there some kind of rule about table-top RPG's and how silly the setting is? I'm guessing that if it's too silly then the game goes off the rails pretty quick. Could He-Man at all be a blend of silly and serious? Even the Ninja Turtles game works, as long as there's some seriousness to the story. If it was just something like "Rock-steady and Bebop open a disco club" then no-one would take it seriously. Right? Maybe that's part of the rles book you're pointing me to.

What if Man-at-Arms sets off to investigate the deaths of his father and baby brother when suddenly the family estate is overrun by flesh eating cyborg spiders. Turns out it's all a cover-up to stop people finding out that Castle Grey Skull was built by enslaved giants that were all ritually killed by Adam's Great Great Grandfather so that they would 'follow him to his afterlife'? Dun-dun-DUN!

Huh, I guess there's nothing new, ever. That's the pessimist in me. The optimist says "Zaboolamafoo sausages please the hungriest of helicopters! Surely no-one's ever said that before!" You win, optimist, you win.

Just a thought. I think the main aspects of character rolling would be which garishly saturated and unnatural colors you'd be suited in.

Man, I don't know. They're setting up the conical tentacle librarians vs a rogue interdimentional being by getting DG's original team to kill him before he destroys the cradle of civilization. Does that help?

question for Herrigold and any other people that listen to our podcast but don't play tabletop RPGs - how did you find RPPR and why did you decide to listen to us?

Hey, sorry I missed this...
Yeah, I started with the Penny Arcade podcasts and went searching for more. There were quite a few, but I instantly liked all of you guys the best. You guys are such an awesome mix of characters and you all (as far as I can tell) get along so well. You guys should be so proud of what you're doing! Well, there are plenty of juvenile quips, but I think it's perfect for a giggle and for keeping me thinking about what you're saying as I listen along. And I dig all the pop / nerd culture references.

Trailblazers! That's what you are. I predict this medium will be a hit for everyone, not just RPGers, especially with all the different themes you tackle.

Yup, I've got a stellar programmer who's going to make our Android port in no time at all. He's got it all figured out. Windows mobile, now that's another story. That all has to be in c# apparently.

Ooops, I put this in the wrong board. Moved it, sorry.

Just started reading this book, it's got a solid intro. I know you guys are into this genre and setting... doesn't Ross know these guys or something? Anyway, plenty of people going crazy, heads flowering open, monsters from the depths, taxidermy, secret Nazi organizations... and I'm only on chapter four! You can get it on any Kindle device.
