RPGs / Re: Trail of Cthulhu

I personally play Trail of Cthulhu. If I understand right, CoC works on a percentile system, and my group is really iffy on that.

that's a weird thing to get hung up on.

Yeah. I may not leap for joy with percentile systems, but at least they have the advantage of being straightforward and easy to understand.
Rolemaster is a percentile system...  ::)

Google reader is awesome. I've also got a Facebook widget that imports my shared items into Facebook Posted Items.

So how do you play without a table? Use an alternative central location or something "outside the box"?
Not sure what you mean by "alternative central location" here. We sit around the lounge room, roll dice on the floor. It's pretty casual. No, I don't use miniatures of any kind. No need, and I have always found that they slow down the game.

Wow, that's pretty hardcore. All I have is the rulebooks, whatever notes I've taken about the adventure, and dice.

Oh, and no table.

Monsters and other childish things!  That game sounds awesome.
Definitely.

I'm all for narrative storytelling. Okay, I'm in. I suppose I need to create a character first?

Send them to survey the new reservoir..?

I'm interested, but not being familiar with the play-by-post format I think I'd prefer to lurk a game before actually committing myself.

I've got a friend who, in a tournament no less, not only unleashed a Lightning Bolt against a Shambling Mound, but also let off a Fireball in a 10x10 room.

He's never lived that down, even after 20 years.

I usually reschedule. I don't much like gaming when players are absent.

I ran my first successful horror game because of RPPR's Halloween episode.

Hullo
Hello, Tom Church.

...any relation?  ;D

Hmm. My first horror game was mentioned on the podcast just after Halloween. The elements I used:

1. I cribbed mercilessly from an existing source (in this case, the movie Alien).
2. I had the players trapped and unable to escape (in a starship between systems).
3. I killed off NPCs one by one.
4. I revealed the monster only gradually.
5. I gave them a challenge to overcome that was not the monster (repairing the drives so that they could continue the trip).

Um, it was a while ago now, so I'm having a little trouble remembering. Fortunately I document all sessions:
