RPGs / Re: rifts muthafuckas!

All I ever hear about when people talk about Rifts is baby dragons, something about Crazies (which makes me imagine Zippy the pinhead) and then something about giant robots.  It does litterally sound like something I would draw on my brown paper bag covered textbooks in 2nd grade.  But not the math textbook.  That one is reserved for the giant space battle where all the lasers bounce off other lasers.

Also Born in the USA does not have the word fuck in it yet

RPGs / Re: Beating A Dead Horse (or why system matters to me)

I suppose it depends on if it's a generic system like GURPS or a setting specific system like Shadowrun.  One quality a system has is adaptibility.  Some are better at it than others.  Setting specific systems like Shadowrun tend to have lower adaptibility.  Is it a design flaw I can't run a game set in the Settlers of Catan universe in Shadowrun easily?  I'd hope not.

I think the source of this discussion comes from the fact that 3.5 and now 4th D&d, the most popular systems out there have low adaptibility.  Both are setting specific high fantasy, and don't translate well to other genre.  Are these design flaws? Again I say no.  3.5 had d20, but each new setting needed custom rules, written by (hopefully) professionals.  I'm sure we'll see 4th edition Modern sometime (dang that actually sounds pretty sweet)

I do feel 4th does lack in the skill department.

I actually will be running a New World Campaign starting on the 9th!  I'm very excited!

We are being difficult and are running it in 3.5, however.

I'm starting everyone at level 3, with one low level magic item, one masterwork item, and as much mundane stuff they can fit in a sack?  Does this sound reasonable?

Ross or clockworkjoe, whatever you are called on the INTARWEBS

Did you have a plan if your PCs took the side of the thieves guild in the water spirit dungeon, for whatever reason or other.  Or where you kinda counting on the basic goodness of the PCs?  I mean, the thieves guild are assholes, so they were doomed from the start with your group.

I suppose I'm asking, what if my group doesnt take a shying to the gripoli and is like "Meh frog people..."

Houses of the Blooded or HotB has a kindgom building system also.  It's how they impliment the "level up" mechanic.  Every season you can hire more dudes, conquere more land, learn better swordsmenship, trade and manufacture, produce art, etc.  It's the best concept for "leveling up" non-combat PCs I've seen.

The guys at Bear Swarm have a nice AP, followed by a review.

Created by John Wick, you take the role of nobles with land and peasants as opposed to dirty adventurers.  Gameplay focuses more on the social and politcal.  The system is unique in that you don't roll for success or failure.  You roll to take control of the narrative.  For example, if you attempt to jump from roof to roof, you  would take a "risk" and set aside some if the dice as wagers.  If you roll hits a target number, you get to dictate what happens plus a nmber of details equal to your wagers. So you might say
"I miss the other rooftop. I fall onto the balcony below.  A servant walks by and lets me in."
If you had three wagers and a successful role.  A failed role doesn't mean you fail, just that the GM dictates what happens.

Fighting has more specific rules to keep things in check but that's the basic idea.

I'd love to play/run Houses of the Blooded.  Or anything other than 4th edition.  At my local shop we have a game every day of the week, but there all 4th edition  :P
