General Chaos / mmm... Pirates.
« on: June 23, 2009, 02:08:49 PM »

They went on discount at my FLGS for like, 4 for $4, so I snatched up all I could at the time.  I used to play the fuck out of this game in the mornings with my friends before class started.  Plus, the tiny dice that come in each pack bring joy to my cold, black heart.

... anyone else?

RPGs / I just did something awesome.
« on: June 03, 2009, 05:22:02 PM »
Last weekend I met up with some old friends of mine for lunch.  We talked for a bit about the "good old days," what was going on with each of us now... you know, the usual bull.

I waited until the conversation met a lull, went deadpan, took out 4 d20's and said "ROLL FOR INITIATIVE."

I stayed completely straight-faced, waited for their laughing to die down a bit and said "NO REALLY, ROLL FOR INITIATIVE."

Everyone scrambled for a d20, and for the next couple of hours in the coffee shop we gleefully engaged in the most gonzo power fantasy of our own invention, including highlights like flying tanks, sexually abused dolphins, marmot-infested waters, Dirty Sanchez monsters, and much much more.

Has anyone else done something like this?

Is it possible to have PbP games that don't devolve into fervent wank-fests?  In my experience it always gets pretty ridonkulous.

RPGs / Beating A Dead Horse (or why system matters to me)
« on: May 28, 2009, 04:38:56 AM »
I thought I'd put something out here that I've been thinking about for the past couple of days and can't get out of my head.
The rules in RPGs are made to promote a certain style of play that the designer or designers want to facilitate.  If you're using a certain system, it's assumed that you want to play/run a certain way that this system promises.  If you are house-ruling, modding, and/or kludging an RPG, why are you even playing that game in the first place?  Discuss.

Also, here's some food for thought: Oberoni Fallacy (noun): The fallacy that the existence of a rule stating that, ‘the rules can be changed,’ can be used to excuse design flaws in the actual rules. Etymology, D&D message boards, a fallacy first formalized by member Oberoni.
