General Chaos / Re: Dragon Age

Star Wars saga edition has a very limited version of this with their talents. Besides sharing a name, you proceed with fulfilling prerequisites that make your Jedi a little bit different from the Jedi standing next to you. You only ever pick like 7 or 8 talents, but it is something, one of my favorite things about the system.

Title says it all. I've never ran an online game before, but I'm itching to actually see these games in action. I'm leaning right now towards Hunter, but would be open for Geist as well. Please post if you're interested to begin with, I'm thinking 3 to 6 players, depending on level of interest. I have a couple of different ideas I'd like to think about more story-wise, but the tone of my Hunter game would be similar to the TV show Supernatural, cause those Winchester boys are badasses.

Unless they've changed it, the first release is supposed to be a boxset. It's like they're going so hard into the past to pull out awesome, it's going to be very hard to avoid.

General Chaos / The Hopeless Gamer is giving away a copy of WD #356!
« on: October 06, 2009, 07:21:40 PM »
The Hopeless Gamer Blog is holding a contest to give away a copy of White Dwarf #356! In the theme of the issue of White Dwarf, which focuses on the new release of Space Hulk, to enter you need to write a space hulk - themed Haiku. Here's the Haiku from my co-writer that inspired the contest:

Brother Zael was screwed
His armor opened by claws
Terminator Treat

(Inspired by this post's picture (http://thehopelessgamer.blogspot.com/2009/09/poor-brother-zael.html#comments) of our first attempt to play mission 1, poor Brother Zael...)

We're also accepting horror/Halloween themed Haiku's because October is the best month of the year. Check out this post (http://thehopelessgamer.blogspot.com/2009/10/contest-announcement.html) for the details on how to enter/win. As long as you follow the rules of Haiku and the themes, you'll be entered in, one entry per person please!

Thank you for your time!

How is Howard's Conan stuff? I've never tried to pick up a book, but for some perverse reason I've been having more and more of an interest in it lately, is it worth the time, and how does it compare, in style, to Lovecraft's writing?

Tis totally the season! I started today with our Shocktober celebrations at The Hopeless Gamer (www.thehopelessgamer.blogspot.com). Each day this month we'll be posting a short, one or two sentence story seed for a horror game. To save you from having to click on a link for (and as a preview for the next month) here's what I did today:

"That new fruit you sampled, enjoyed so much, and then proceeded to buy at the farmer's market is not a fruit at all; also, it's enjoying the chance now to sample and enjoy you so much."

Enjoy!

RPGs / Re: How do you become a better Role Player?
« on: September 19, 2009, 09:57:43 AM »
What games are you playing and running? My first thought is that some games support actually roleplaying than others. I love D&D 4e, but it does not support and reward players for roleplaying their character. On the flipside, something like Mouse Guard or Burning Wheel actually rewards players mechanically to role play. Maybe a system that gives you a tangible reward to roleplay will get you going quicker?

Are you playing the genres or IP's that you are interested in? I guess, from my point of view, it really depends on the games you're playing.

That's awesome. I traded for the Vade Mecum awhile ago but haven't had an opportunity to read it or even really look through it yet. Didn't even realize they had the alternate card system, which I think would really make the game unique and apart from most other RPG's mechanically. Now I'm really going to have to check it out.

Anyone have any of the story books like Dark Passions? Are they worth the cash/how neat are they?

That's great to hear! Did you use just the core book, or material from the vade mecum (sp?)?

General Chaos / Re: Good anime series?
« on: September 13, 2009, 09:52:51 PM »
So I was a fan of Gundam all through high school (actually had all three of the movie hey made of the original series before I even heard Gundam Wing as coming to Cartoon Network, so I have street cred, yo). I've recently been thinking I'd like to see what they've done since Wing was made and to check out some of the new series.

My favorite stuff was everything in continuity with the original series, or those series fitting in the Universal Century timeline. I liked the continuity as well as the more militaristic, less superhero kind of stuff. My favorite Gundam series is the 08TH MS Team miniseries.

All that being said, what would come recommended as far as the recent Gundam series go? I understand that there's something called "SEED" and then the most recent series was just called "00 Gundam" and the latter is what I'm interested in from what I've read. 00 Gundam is available on Netflix so I was going to try it out that way. Anyone seen these and could give an opinion on if I'd like them before I queue (sp?) them up?

Also, anyone see the remake of Evangelion? I guess the DVD's are supposed to be released this fall for the first movie, so that's pretty cool. If anyone wants to recommend anything else based off the fact that I like giant robots with heavier themes, I'm all ears.

Take your time, Dawnsteel. The game will wait, we're all obviously just hoping you and yours are doing alright.

Sweet, I have to say I'm jealous that you have a local shop that stocks Ctech, that's truly unique. I do remember seeing a copy of Geist at my local shop, so maybe just those who are stocking it aren't going out on a limb to get more than one or two copies? That would explain the difficulty a little better.

Of course I can't complain about being able to pick up books or games in town, considering I live about 10 minutes away from Noble Knight Games and can just order for them with an in-store pickup.

I would not abandon metagaming as your player, who most certainly is a dick, would freak out even moreso if the newer player made a decision that couldn't be "taken back" that would effect the actual characters.

Dude sounds like a dude who would be really unhappy and perceive it as "losing" if this type of a situation would come up, which is ridiculous since role playing should mostly be collaborative with the competition coming from being able to do the most kickass thing in-game.

If you want to cut down discussion, throw things at them that makes life more...interesting as they go back and forth and make some in-game consequences that will cut down the deliberation.

Really? Honestly I haven't been following that end of it, but that sucks! I picked mine up at Gencon, so I lucked out. Do we think it's because of a shortage or just annoying store politics/delivery issues?
